Akechi in third sem + his engine room death

I'm actually so sick at how Akechi purposely tried to keep Ren at arms length in third sem and allowed no vulnerability to slip through not only for Ren but for himself too. To not give himself the time to start to dwell on the fact that he's dead and will not get to have this. Nor to give himself the time to regret his suicide/sacrifice.

Maybe regret isn't the right word but. Dejection? Sorrow? The "what ifs" of if he got out of there with them? I think a lot about how Ren's desire is not flattering but sickening to Akechi not only because he believes Ren wanting him here is illogical and that he deserves nothing but death or cold, lonely atonement, but because of the fact that it was his one desire that was so strong it was the thing Maruki used against him, aka using Akechi as a puppet. He indirectly made him live yet again as a puppet, the torturous life that he freed himself from in the engine room. That he gave him more time to think about what happened in the engine room, that he gave him this will.

I refer to his death in the engine room as a suicide because it really is one to me but just can you imagine what it's like, willingly letting yourself die as a sacrifice, not wanting this death but accepting it, and then suddenly you're alive, and you're forced to be able to grieve yourself? He thinks his death was righteous, and he'd choose it over and over again- however, he's still a human boy who had the childish wish that he just wanted to play chess after school with ren. he still *wanted* in third semester. he wanted to live in the "what if" of if he and ren could just. be alive. together. But the thing he and Ren have in common is that they are both strong enough to put aside their personal desires for the justice they believe in. In every timeline Akechi would destroy Maruki's reality and Ren will let Akechi go to destroy it.

Wrapping back around it just devastates me thinking about the fact that, in Yusuke's words “he fought all this time, knowing he was going to disappear." The entire third sem he kept his head onto the goal ahead because indulging in anything else would be too devastating. He can't let himself feel the same sentimentality that Ren does because it *hurts.* It hurts so much that he's dead, and he's scared. He didn't want to die. He died as the lost player in a game by God, his every action leading up to his death ending up meaning nothing. He didn't want to die, he wants to play with Ren. Ugh. there's a reason why "no more what ifs" is his song. He wanted and was ready to be freed from everything. that everything- the revenge plan- was exhausting. but. he still had desire to live. his wish proves that. his refusal to be vulnerable too. just has no desire to live as a puppet- which was his only choice if he chose to live.

it hurts much more when you have the same perspective of the engine room scene as I do, which is the fact that I don’t see it as his last grand gesture of fighting back. I hate the interpretation that his sacrifice was this great good deed, that he died with fight for justice. he died in the palm of someone, still controlled by god. yes his sacrifice was inherently good but he did it cause he lost everything not out of kindness. it shows his character, how he falls, the contrast between the acts of him and the PTs, how easy it is to fall, etc; but is not a grand conclusion to his morality. He also went into it sorta knowing he was going to lose. He just selfishly didn’t want to be the only one to.

I was reading a post once about how if Akechi lives that it undermines his actions in the engine room, that he died being a great sacrifice who came to justice, and i couldn’t disagree more. He didn’t die a hero, nor die in just; him and ren were pawns to see who wins and he lost. he didnt win against fate. passing off the act of justice to ren was an act forced upon him, not willing. he realized then, that everything was for nothing, and if he was going to die, then at least he can selfishly give the job to someone else. He was forced to give up.

I really fail to see how death is meaningful in that moment for him. The engine room scene is powerful, but not in that way to me. Ren and Akechi were put in a “who will prevail and who will fall” situation by God, so then following that exact line of fate is meaningless, when the theme of p5 is fighting back. Akechi’s sacrifice also didn’t mean shit about fighting back LMAO. shido didn’t gaf and the PT’s were going to change his heart either way.

Akechi passing it onto the PT’s was also his desire for his actions to mean something. While I’m glad the beta third awakening was scrapped, I do wish they left some showing that Akechi is bitter about the engine room. He wanted to be the one to revenge Shido, more than he cared about the act.

So all in all, you are basically forced in a situation to commit suicide/make yourself a sacrifice, dying as a puppet where you failed your mother, you failed yourself, at least satisfied with the fact that it will all be over, but then you wake up again, with no memory of how you survived, lost and confused and why aren’t I dead I should be dead. Please let me rest. But the boy who should hate you the most wished for you to be here, and that’s so, so aggravating, it’s the most aggravating thing in the world, and yet you can’t help but to also wish you could be with him. You want to stay. You want to stay where you can be with him with your own free will. But you can’t. So the desire is meaningless, a sickening pit in your stomach. And you’re scared, you don’t know what will happen when it’s time for you to disappear. Will it hurt? You don’t want to die. You want to die. But you don’t want to die.

Grieving yourself and what you could’ve been must be a weird, weird feeling.

A neat thing to me is that these resemble tomial teeth, which is a thing some birds have that are these protrusions in their top beak (and matching notches on their bottom beak)

ok but seriously, they’re vastly different characters on a fundamental level:

- light was handed everything him on a silver platter: family, friends, looks, intellect, a comfortable life… as a bastard child of a sex worker and now an orphan, goro had to fight his way to his current position and will always harbor a terrible sense of inferiority (light is completely confident in his absolute superiority, Always (that’s why the challenge of L sent him off the deep end of obsession lol))

- light genuinely sees himself as a hero, while goro would like to feel the same but is nonetheless depressingly aware of his villain’s journey (his undesirable position as the detective vs the underdog phantom thieves, his string of assassinations, his ultimate dirty bloody goal, etc.).

- light’s motive is about the world’s salvation, cleansing, the birth of his ideal reality (very messianic of him with the slightest loving tinge of mary cradling her lamb hahaha) while goro is laser-focused on ruining this one asshole’s life in particular, vengeance and revenge at once! one’s focused on rebirth, and the other gunning straight for death! they both use murder to get what they want but light probably floats around thinking himself so clean and divine as mother of the world (ignorance is bliss) while goro is constantly desperately trying to cover up his suspiciously red hands with his gloves hehehe… they’re both constantly striving for perfection, just with varying levels of self-awareness!!

- goro is a canonical loner; light has a horde of friends; this is probably due to a difference in public persona! goro is an untouchable idea of what he thinks a human should be and is completely out of the loop when it comes to normal social interactions (believes opening with hegel will instantly endear himself to the average person (luckily he inflicted that upon akira who is decidedly not average in the slightest)), light is implied to be more down-to-earth and even slightly goofy (he’s gaming decorum like an advanced speedrunner)! it’s probably good how distant goro is, because getting any closer to him will allow you to see how off-putting and uncanny he is, sorta like an AI-generated image—seams in the wrong places and far too much teeth LOL. meanwhile light has this whole shebang so thoroughly figured out that he’s BORED with it all! he’d like to move on to the next game (with L), thank you!! light definitely still exudes uncanny creepiness (it’s his natural state of being) especially when he zones out or starts hysterically cackling out of nowhere at his own thoughts, but he’s a hundred times better at masking compared to goro due to a better upbringing. goro is starved for the adoring friends he sees akira easily picking up one after another; light couldn’t give less of a shit because he’s always had those trivial luxuries! he’d much rather prefer an adoring WORLD!!

- then there’s the difference in how they die… one started out surrounded with company but ultimately died alone, while it’s the opposite for the other (if you count the de-realization of maruki’s reality as goro’s “death” (which i don’t)).

- in conclusion, light and goro are like funhouse mirror reflections of each other!!! one is a pampered lapdog getting a taste of rabies and letting loose, while the other is a starving wolf trying to domesticate itself for treats and headpats!! and i <3 them both!!!!!

OnK Chapter 151

Me two weeks ago:

Me reading this chapter:

The fact that Aka did parallel Chapter 30 makes me feel like we're definitely going to see some Tokyo Blade & Private parallels as the anime covers those arcs. For the better or for the worse.

But we'll get there in due time. For now, time to laugh at the writing again 😂

I have to hand it to Aka. I mentioned that last chapter highlighted like half the reasons why I find romantic Aqua/Kana so poorly written, and this chapter right here did a fine job at highlighting the rest 😂

I want to be an actress! Well... Aqua wants me to be an idol and it may not be so bad actually, I want to be Aqua's Oshi no Ko! Aqua is ignoring me! Being an idol sucks, I quit! I'm going to be a great actress! I may have a chance with Aqua actually. I just want to be his Oshi no Ko!

It's wild to me that Aka had Kana say that her current dream is just to be Aqua's Oshi no Ko. Absolutely wild. This girl was so desperate to become a well-known actress that she was willing to be casting-couched for it, yet suddenly now it's actually it's fine that I peaked when I was five tee hee!

She's obviously lying to herself and settling for the level she is in now because she thinks that reaching that level of notoriety is out of her reach, but...

Not gonna lie, as someone who has seen Akane be called everything from obsessed to emotionally dependant to simp, it is hilarious to witness Kana's writing right now.

But I guess it couldn't have been any other way, because what Kana asks out of Aqua this chapter is a reflection of what she has wanted all along:

I mentioned it before that Kana started fixating on Aqua as being that person for her, and this chapter shows that's still the case. There's nothing inherently wrong with that IMO, in fact it could be empowering to know that as long as this one person is in your corner, you can take on the world.

The problem is that so far, Aka hasn't quite written it that way. The secret behind Kana's acting is that she wants people to look at her, she wants people to acknowledge her, to love her. But when that desire is centered on Aqua and Aqua alone, she gets so hung-up on him that it's debilitating. She literally became a shell of herself during that year Aqua was no longer a part of her life.

Last time I felt Kana was acting pathetic, Aka confirmed that she was indeed meant to be perceived that way, and Kana gave herself a reality-check:

I thought Kana's moment of self-awareness was going to lead her to be emotionally independent from Aqua, but it seems that the fact that Aqua wound up saving her either way undid that progress. Now that she has hope that he may date her if she makes a move, she's taking it so far that she's ranking her romance with him over her lifelong dreams.

All this to say that since Aka once deliberately wrote Kana being overly dependant on Aqua to show that it's not how she is meant to be, I can't help but hope we may see something similar later.

Granted, Kana being written like a shounen love-interest whose entire purpose is just to get with the MC has always been a risk, so I guess this is par for that course lol

As for Aqua, I mentioned before that I believe Kana is everything he liked about both, Ai and Sarina and thus, the perfect Oshi... and this chapter has Kana declaring out-loud that she wants to be his one true Oshi No Ko.

Moreover, this is happening right after Ruby told Aqua this:

And while Sarina is undoubtedly Goro's Oshi, Kana wants to be Aqua's. The issue with that however... is that Kana wants to be the only person Aqua looks at, his Number One.

Meanwhile, Aqua kind of has his hand full in that regard already, so it's no wonder that through his shock, he isn't able to "catch" the ball symbolizing that particular part of Kana's dream 😂

There's his eyes, too. Last chapter I said that Aka seems to want us to compare the Aqua-Ruby chapters we got in this volume with Kana's, and the way Kana's confession was structured seems to confirm this is the case. So following that comparison, it stands out to me that Ruby's words brought out Aqua's white star and Kana's didn't. Especially because just a few chapters ago we saw Kana bring out Aqua's white star just by being Kana:

In this chapter Kana praises him, validates him, confirms that she is into him (which he has likely known since, coincidentally, at least Chapter 30), yet Aqua’s star remains black all throughout.

Why is that? Is it just his self-hatred and his guilt-complex keeping him from accepting that he’s the object of Kana’s straight gaze?

Or could Aka be hinting at something else?

Aqua has a lot of issues. Some have been with him since he was Goro, and others he has developed during his current life. We saw that Ruby's words pacified the "Goro" within him, but Aqua dismissed Ruby's affection as being aimed at him because he once was Goro. It's not something he feels he has earned in his current life. Kana is the other side of that complex equation. Everything she knows about him are things he has been willing to show her, but what about everything else? What about his trauma and his dark impulses? What about his past? Aqua likely thinks her view of him is skewed, and he is not wrong in that regard. But I'll stop there before I bring Akane into the mess lmao

All in all, for the time being, I feel like what we saw this chapter tracks with my thoughts here:

Aqua, Kana, Ai and Aka's concept of Oshi

Kana is the Ultimate Oshi (parallels to Sarina and Ai) + 1

Even more parallels and a theory about their purpose

Considering how lousy Aka's writing has been lately, I feel like this is still the most interesting route he could take. After all, if we abide by the values he preached in Kaguya, then Oshi is meant to be a platonic concept. So following Aka's logic, for Aqua and Kana to end up together, Aqua would need to tell her that he doesn't want her to be his Oshi, but his lover.

Of course, it's entirely possible that Aka is going to walk back on all of that. Oshi no Ko is supposed to be its own manga, after all. Maybe it's his attempt at writing tropes in the most straight-forward way possible and Aka's new idea of a big love declaration is Aqua finally waving the white lightstick at Kana's graduation concert.

If the curtains truly are just blue, I hope the writing will remain as hilarious as it has been these past few chapters 😂

In the meantime, the other thing that stood out to me this chapter was Aqua himself. We all know that being a surgeon was Goro's dream, so it makes sense for Goro to chase that dream in this new life as Aqua. I was even happy for him when he first brought it up because this life is his chance to do everything he wanted but couldn't in his first life!

But last chapter we had a big showing of "Goro" telling "Aqua" that he is free to live his own life now. In other words, instead of trying to do what Goro would have done if he had a second chance, he can focus on doing the things that he wants to do as the individual he has become during his life as Aqua Hoshino.

So, I feel like this begs the question: is being a surgeon truly Aqua Hoshino's dream? Like not even something he wants to do alongside other things, but his outright dream?

I can't help but wonder. Particularly because, in my opinion, the TB arc did a good job at foreshadowing that Aqua Hoshino is made to be an actor.

In this chapter Kana seems to be fooling herself into giving up on her childhood dream because she thinks it's out of her reach. It would fit, then, for the Aqua in this chapter to be fooling himself as well.

If we entertain the thought of wanting to be a surgeon being a vestige of his old life rather than something Aqua truly dreams of in his current life, then his reaction in these pages becomes more interesting:

Kana assumes Aqua is just embarrassed, but these panels to me read like something more than that - for more reasons than one.

Just like Goro guided him to Kana last chapter possibly based on his own wants, in this chapter Kana unknowingly guides him to Goro's.

She is completely right. Every word she says rings true.

But I'd argue that everything she said was already accomplished by Goro in his previous life. He did save lives (although not as many as he would've wanted, and not the ones that counted the most for him), he was a light to Sarina, etc. etc. He was a good doctor.

Everything Kana says about Aqua was already true of Goro. On the other hand, Kana's description of Aqua paints nothing but virtues, and we know for a fact Aqua isn't only just light. More than that, we know for a fact that Aqua doesn't see himself that way.

Much like how in Chapter 149 we got Kana giving a very positive but very one-sided description of Akane that leaves out her negative traits, Kana more or less does the same thing with Aqua here.

In Chapter 149, Akane first got flustered (her idol Kana-chan was praising her, after all) and then sobered up; possibly because for her it's the opposite (she isn't a goody-two-shoes nor normal nor decent, and men would prefer women who are - like Kana).

I feel like in this Chapter, we may or may not have seen a repeat of this with Aqua. It's his Oshi no Kana praising him, but does he really believe the things she's saying of him? Or are they just a reminder of what he is not (according to himself)?

I can't help but wonder, because last time we saw Aqua blushing to the point that he had to hide his face, Mengo and Aka made sure we could see his blush.

The way he is drawn here is very obviously meant to be paralleled to this chapter, he shields his face in the same way and all. So why not simply show his blush, just like they did in Chapter 29?

Granted, this is just me naturally going for the most interesting possibility lol It is entirely possible and even likely that this is all as simple as it seems. But to be fair, in Chapter 30 he throws the ball at Kana in the same way and it wasn't because Kana was right. At the contrary: it was because he was having a moment and Kana drew the most basic conclusion out of it, one that embarrassed him lmao

Geez it's kind of sad how this manga lends itself to two completely different readings and the most basic one is the one with the highest chances of being true 😂

Alrighty, first off, i wanted to make some basic redesigns for this au lolol i never drawn armor before sorry!

Why i called this au status effect related? 

Although i have half baked plans for the other status effects (poison, frostbite, death blight etc.) This au focuses primarily on 4 status effects (for now) with a few elden ring concepts mixed in. I’ll do my best to explain when it comes up!

Also with some of the elden ring related lore, i used SOME unused lore for this au so plz don’t take this as a 100% accurate interpretation ㅠㅠ

Also also in this AU Shido is a puppet leader and yaldaboth is this worlds hidden leader/king(?) atm

Ren and Goro are travel companions, trying to take the throne (they’re united by a goal but hiding their true agendas from each other lol)

ok heres the info dump/ramblings: Warning, its a lot lol

Goro- has control over a power/concept called the Frenzied flame

The Frenzied Flame is pure chaos incarnate in Elden Ring. It is a unrelenting force that seeks to melt everything, to  “Incinerate all that divides and distinguishes”  through the spread of madness/chaos. Basically a contagious mind virus that could empower a person while also making them go insane. If you can even slightly tame it you will be rewarded with the strength of chaos itself.

When a person accepts The Frenzied flame into themselves, they get these weird finger print markings/scars on your body (goro was “grabbed” by the Frenzied flame) and their eyes start having a yellow glow to them. The frenzied flame is stored in a persons eyes, even shootings out of their eyes when wielded (Like this!)

Ren has control over sleep to a degree and could see into dreams. (But his true power/strength is sealed away…)

Sleep is acts differently in this world. There’s normal sleep and other types of sleep, sleep you can control/wield.

 In Rens case, he has power over a special type of sleep, A sleep that does more than restore the body and its energy. This sleep feels like a gentle embrace that takes away turmoil, even dulling the senses to an extent , preventing agitation to give a feeling of true peace & clarity. The type of sleep that could actually temporarily quell madness and frenzy..

The other is more straightforward. It’s called eternal sleep. im sure you can guess what that does lol.

Ren is like a spectral, he can be interacted with, seen and touched BUT he doesn’t have a living body, meaning even if you “kill” him he’ll just reappear. 

Also he can just choose to appear/disappear (like this!)

Extra incoherent ramblings below:

Goro makes himself psychotic in p5 and in elden ring you can make yourself a lot stronger by literally inflicting yourself with madness. I thought Goro would probably be angry/crazy enough to adopt the Frenzied flame, annnnd having the Frenzied flame is said to be pretty painful but also euphoric(?) and that kinda sound like its up Goros alley lol. Also (I just remembered this!) IN GOROS 3RD AWAKENING, HE SAID HE’D “SOW CHAOS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE” AND THE SAYING ASSOCIATED WITH THE FRENZIED FLAME IS “MAY CHAOS TAKE THE WORLD”

There is so much sleep symbolism/sleeps connections to death in persona sooo I thought it made sense to make Ren the one who has control over sleep /𝓓⃥̸𝓮⃥̸𝓼⃥̸𝓽⃥̸𝓲⃥̸𝓷⃥̸𝓮⃥̸𝓭⃥̸𝓓⃥̸𝓮⃥̸𝓪⃥̸𝓽⃥̸𝓱⃥̸

Also sleep and madness have matching icons lolol that’s definitely not the main reason I thought of this au…lolol…

Sleep is one of the few things that could temporarily alleviate madness and the Frenzied flames influence. Ren is trying to help(save) Goro, while also struggling with the fact that he was supposed to kill anyone who has the Frenzied flame since it can kinda end the world, and the fact that he’s the only one who has the power to do it.

Meanwhile Goro just wants revenge and the power to make him as strong as possible and to make the revenge as painful as possible. I really liked your analysis on the “core” of both Joker and Akechi. I agree that neither the detective prince or the black mask “is” Akechi at his core; but rather, he’s fractured. My question to you is, do you think we ever see the “true” Goro Akechi within the canon? It is my opinion that we do likely in Rank 6 just for a little bit and in fragments during the engine room. And by that logic, what do you think the “true” Akechi would be like in a post canon scenario where the DP/BM are gone?

thank you so much and really good question. in my personal opinion we definitely see parts of his sincere self but there's sort of an asterisk attached to that (ill expand) and more importantly even in those truthful moments we never really see the Whole of him because as i said before i don't think his sense of self is really collected enough into a unified whole to be able to show it off even if he wanted to, at least at that point in his life

im like turning this question over in my hands bc im about to go into a bunch of this stuff in the next chapter of my longfic and i dont want to just say the same thing twice, but basically (this time it isn't as long thank god. it's still a bit long)

i think even in the moments akechi is letting you see him in canon such as in rank 6 (and i think you're right i do think at rank 6 he's exposing a bit of himself to you. most of himself. all of himself. he is naked) he's doing so deliberately, because unveiling a bit of truth is a very potent tool in trying to get someone's trust (in this case ren's) and convincing them to swallow the rest of a lie. so while he's showing you something real, i think his intentions are still very guarded, so i would still say he's holding up a facade at that point

black mask in the engine room is more complicated because i think that's the closest he gets to being unguarded during canon. look it's like multilayered because i think when he's being the detective prince he's aware that he's being false because he's doing it on purpose, but when he's the black mask he's much less aware because at that point the insincerity is just something that's built into his understanding of himself so it becomes less a deliberate facade and more a failure to comprehend who he is on an internal level? so i think as black mask in the engine room he's not lying to you anymore. he's just not like... self-actualised enough that we can really call the black mask the "whole" of who goro akechi is, because he sees himself as a villain with an expiration date and so he's kind of deliberately made his self-understanding quite shallow. but it's close. i think that's the most sincere he ever intentionally gets.

re: postcanon - this is really interesting to mull over because i think generally people agree that third semester akechi is like, again, as close as we can get to akechi not masking around you. but i also think that's mostly just because he's being mean, and it's easier to buy meanness as sincerity than niceness. im going into this in the next chapter too i have to figure out how to reword this

but akechi in third sem IS masking. akechi in third sem is a man who thinks he's dead. that expressionlessness isn't just him not bothering to put the smile on anymore, it's him coating his entire existence in a layer of nihilism and apathy because in his mind he doesn't exist anymore and how are you meant to cope with that? it's definitely still more sincere than the detective prince, and i think it's closer to what his personality would be removed from his circumstances. well, that raises another question on a more abstract level LOL about how much of a person's personality IS just... reactivity to circumstances. like is it even meaningful to ask this question? is it useful to try and remove someone into a contextless vacuum to determine their "true self". i think no so to what point is it relevant to try and determine which of a person's circumstances are sufficiently extreme that they should be considered outliers and at what point does it just become a futile exercise in trying to achieve, like, the character equivalent of nagel's view from nowhere I'M GETTING OFF TRACK THI SISNT WHAT YOU ASKED

THE POINT IS. postcanon i think we could expect akechi to resemble his third sem self to an extent but i think a little less blank, a little more reactive and emotional. furthermore i think even when the detective prince and the black mask are gone as conscious masks elements of those personalities would still remain in akechi's character, like, i still think he'd do the ^_^ in public, i still think he'd be unhinged when context allows, because i very firmly believe that (not just for akechi but for everyone in general, but especially for akechi) the choices you make when you're masking and those masks that you wear ARE part of your true self and not just a disguise this is going to show up in longfic too

so i think akechi goro is a liar, he's a performer, he's ruthless, he's flat and dry, he knows how to play the game. he was once idealistic and it's crossed into bitterness so he reacts to his circumstances with cynicism and impatience. he's guarded and carefully filtered in most situations, but in familiar situations where he feels he doesn't have too much to lose (eg with the few people he thinks he can mostly trust) he's smug and cutting and doesnt suffer fools easily. he doesnt pull punches, but dont mistake the bluntness for honesty. i think to akechi truth and information and vulnerability will always be a weapon

I didn’t expect to reveal this so soon, but since you brought it up, Ken and Akechi are related in my AU!!! How so idk yet because I keep flip flopping between them being brothers or cousins. I already have scenes planned out for either scenario so it’s just the matter of time whether I like the progression of one more than the other. Either way, the two have an interesting dynamic as they’re actually roommates. Why? Ken’s “distant relative” decided it was time for him to return to his family (and to keep close tabs on someone close to the Kirijo Group but shhhh). By the time P5 starts the two have been living together for over a year and by that point, Akechi’s mask has slipped off. He’s not yelling bloody murder, but he definitely doesn’t grace Ken with the princely attitude he has in public. Things only get more tense between them as the PTs start to gain momentum…

Anyways, a little morning walk :) Akechi never gets proper sleep, but Ken is an early bird
