I just watched The Menu (because I am culturally behind, always).
I came in already knowing people were going to die - being culturally behind comes with spoilers, after all. So for me, the most intriguing and telling part of the movie came about four minutes in: we are presented with a rich asshole, who, given a fancy oyster dish, tells our protagonist that the plain oyster wouldn't be as good without the "mouthfeel of the mignonette".
And I need to know if the writers did this on purpose. Here we have the only character on this boat who is a willing customer in a meal where he knows everyone will die. He knows that the moment he stepped on this boat his death and those around him is inevitable once the food runs out.
And the food the writers choose to highlight which, for him, takes this meal beyond a pedestrian experience? It's a sauce that just so happens to share the name of a ship. A ship that FAMOUSLY was wrecked, leading to a case of murder in order to commit cannibalism amongst survivors.
He knows he's going to die, he knows that he is participating in a gory, immoral meal of death, he is deliberately bringing someone to their death, and he fucking namedrops the HMS Mignonette when he says how special and unique this experience is and I just cannot believe this was an accident. If it wasn't deliberate foreshadowing then what the heck, but if it was this genius writing move then why can't I find anybody else talking about it??? I'm losing it.
#the menu#behold i wrote a thing#look are there just not enough people out there#who know their cannibalism history#and also know about degustation menus#but are up for a movie critiquing them?#can nobody else namedrop sauces that are also cannibal ships?????#does nobody else annoy their husband by talking about this stuff????#IT FEELS LIKE I HAVE CONNECTED THINGS AND I AM PRETTY SURE I AM JUST ALONE IN A ROOM#MAKING SHIT UP#i know it's a little bit not a perfect connection because they get off a ship and go to a deserted island#but when he said this on the ship i lost my shit#and then when i found out he knew the whole time???????? fuck#guys this is the second thing on netflix i have watched recently that was PERFECT and i hate it because netflix is evil#but unfortunately i'm out here having a REALLY good time#so inevitably whatever i watch next is going to be garbage#this has been a long post with a long ramble in the tags to say: i'm still so so on my bullshit

The Cat and Dog Game [Chapter 22]
Genre: Romance, Fluff, Comedy
Pairing: Yunho x Reader (y/n)
Characters: Chef!Reader, RestaurantOwner!Yunho, MaitreD!Hongjoong, Waiter!Yeosang, Waiter!San, Waiter!Mingi, SousChef!Seonghwa, SousChef!Wooyoung, PrepChef!Jongho
Summary: Yunho's dream was to open and run his own restaurant. But he doesn't know anything when it comes to cooking. Until you came along and accepted the job, bringing with you a small crew. How will the black cat tame the energetic golden retriever?
Word count: 3.2K
You didn't know where Yunho had dinner reserved. He didn't tell you anything too, no matter what kind of questions you asked. He insisted on keeping it a secret to surprise you. Jongho sent you a check in text while you were in the car.
"What are you laughing about?" Yunho asked when he heard a small chuckle escape you.
"Jongho texted me. He wanted to make sure you didn't kill me and dump my body." You informed, still chuckling slightly. He could be just as dramatic as Wooyoung and Seonghwa sometimes.
"What?! Is that what he really thinks of me?" Yunho scoffed in disbelief.
"He's just protective. And you were the one who argued earlier that you could be mean if you wanted to." You defended.
"I- Okay, now you are being mean to me." He whined. You giggled and shook your head. As Yunho drove, you cast occasional glances at him to properly study his face.
"Take a picture. It'll last longer." Yunho said, teasing you. Your eyes widened and your cheeks heated up, knowing you've been caught. Clearing your throat, you quickly turned your head to look out the window instead. You heard him chuckling behind you, floored by your adorable reaction.
"Alright, we're here." Yunho parked the car and jogged over to open the door for you.
"Come on." He held his hand out to you, a charming smile on his face. You looked up at him with a small smile and slipped your hand into his, getting out of the passenger seat.
"Just where are we?" You asked, looking up at the grey building. Yunho zipped his lips and locked the car.
You followed Yunho into the building, hand in hand. There was a doorman there to open the door and welcome you in with a smile.
"Reservation?" The hostess lady asked. Yunho gave his name and reservation ID. The hostess cross checked the name on her list, just like Hongjoong does.
"Right this way." She smiled, leading the both of you in. There was a table right before a huge, floor to ceiling window.
"Wow..." You were speechless, looking down at the nightlife of Seoul city before you. The view was unreal.
"This is amazing, Yunho ah." You turned to look at him. Yunho smiled softly, pulling the chair out for you to take your seat. You bowed your head and sat down. He took his own seat across you but you just couldn't take your eyes off the view.
"I'm taking your reaction as a good one? That the surprise was successful?" Yunho chuckled. You nodded with a small hum, resting your head on your hand to look.
"Are you going to be able to tear your eyes away to eat?" He joked. You finally turned back to him and rolled your eyes.
"What's special here?" You asked as you picked up the menu.
"D-De-Degustation?" Yunho tried to remember the fancy word that he came across when doing research on the restaurant. But you knew what he meant.
"Alright. Let's go with that then." You closed the menu. Of course, Yunho wasn't even surprised that you knew what he meant.
"Do you know what degustation is?" You asked him.
"Like you said, I did research on this place. I may not know how to pronounce it but I know what it is. It's like a tasting menu with portions of the chef's best dishes and flavours. A curated experience to appreciate the flavours, presentation and the cuisine." Yunho said like he was reading off the dictionary definition.
"I'm actually impressed. Did you memorise the whole definition?" You laughed in surprised. His ears got red in embarrassment and he rubbed the back of his neck.
"I didn't say it to embarrass you, Yunho. I'm really touched and honoured that you went through all this trouble." You clarified.
"Like I said, I just want this to be as perfect as possible. I want you to have a good time." He said.
"Well, so far, do you think it has gone perfectly?"
"Yes. Although I didn't have a plan on where to go, I enjoyed my time at the aqaurium with you." He confessed. Now it was your turn to get flustered and embrassed.
"I've been having a great time, Yunho. Thank you for doing all this." You smiled softly. Yunho smiled, he was happy to hear that.
"May I take your order?" The waiter came over. You both went with the degustation menu.
"I'm driving but feel free to have some wine if you'd like. The degustation apparently goes well with their house red, according to the reviews I read." Yunho informed. You shook your head, you didn't need to have a drink.
"It's okay, I'd rather drink with you. Next time." You giggled. Yunho brightened up at the prospect of there being a next time and nodded his head excitedly.
"Enjoy some homemade bread." The waiter brought a bread basket. The smell of freshly baked warm bread filled your nose.
"Could I have some flaky salt and freshly cracked pepper, please?" You requested.
"Of course." The waiter smiled and bowed before leaving. Yunho squinted his eyes, he didn't like the smile the waiter sent you. It was a little too friendly for his liking. He brought the items to your table.
"So, after dipping your bread, sprinkle a little. It opens up the flavours of the olive oil and balsamic vinegar." You demonstrated.
"I'll try it." Yunho grabbed a piece onto the small side plate and copied your actions.
"Mmm, that's so good. I love warm bread." He nodded his head in satisfaction as he chewed and went for another bite. You made a mental note, Yunho likes bread. Then you remembered how Mingi likes bread too, it was one of the first things he told you. It was funny how both best friends liked bread.
"What's so funny?" He blinked in confusion.
"One of the first things Mingi told me was that he loves bread. It's just cute that both of you love bread. I guess you're best friends for a reason." You laughed.
"He's so random... Why would he tell you that when he first met you?" Yunho mumbled.
"Well, I helped you out of a walk in refridgerator when we first met." You tilted your head. Yunho's eyes widened.
"Please forget that. I was nervous and-"
"Yunho... It's okay and completely normal to be nervous. I would have been too. You were really adorable hiding in there though. And it'll always be one of the first memories I have of you." You smiled.
"Your first impression of me should have been that I was tough, not... like that..." He pouted.
"Then it wouldn't have been genuine, not the real you. I much prefer seeing and knowing the real you than a tough guy." You said.
Yunho was touched by your words. You were right, he was glad that you weren't scared or weirded out by his genuine self. It seemed that you actually liked it. If he had put on a facade and distance between the two of you from the start, maybe he wouldn't be here now.
"Here you go. The first course." The waiter brought two plates, serving you first then Yunho. You both listened to the way he described the dish and how to eat it.
"Enjoy." He bowed and left the two of you. You and Yunho held your cutlery and dug in.
"This is good." You nodded your head.
"You have no idea how hard it is to pick a restaurant when you're going on a date with a chef." Yunho snorted before he let out a sigh of relief, that you liked the food.
"Hey, I'm always appreciative of good food. I never expect high end dishes. I'm happy with simple dishes." You said.
"Exactly. Good food. Your definition of 'good food' is vastly different from mine." He chuckled.
"I guess this is the part where we kind of ask each other questions to find out more about each other right?" You suddenly asked after wiping your mouth with your napkin.
"We don't have to." Yunho assured. He didn't want to push you, he was afraid of asking the wrong thing or asking something that was too sensitive. The whole point of this was for you to be more comfortable around him and come to trust him more. But he wanted it to happen at your pace.
"Don't look so scared. I'll try my best to answer what I can. You don't have to tell me everything too." You smiled. Yunho nodded, putting his hand over yours to ground himself.
"Why don't you start? We'll just carry on from where ever, we don't have to go back and forth like 20 questions." He encouraged.
"Alright... Hmm, since you're not that good at cooking, who usually cooked for you?" You asked.
"My grandmother. She's the reason I have such a big appetite and love food. Only when I moved back with my parents, my mother cooked more. When I got my own place, it was take out."
"You lived with yourgrandmother? Is that why you're so close with her?" You blinked.
"Yeah. My parents had very busy jobs so Gunho and I lived with her. When my parents' jobs slowed down, we moved back." He replied.
"What about your parents?" Yunho asked. Even if you faltered for half a second, you recovered almost immedaitely and kept your demeanour. At your silence, Yunho greatly regretted asking, his fear came true.
"I was close with my mother, you know that. We spent a lot of time in the kitchen. But she got sick and passed away. Then my father remarried." You informed, feeling the lump form in your throat.
"I'm sorry." Yunho grew sad.
"Nothing for you to apologise about. There was no way you would have known. But yes, I have a stepmother and older stepbrother."
"Are they... nice?" He winced, mentally scolding himself. He didn't meant to ask that out loud, it was more a rhetorical question that he had in my brain.
"Television has some truth sometimes." Was what you said. So the answer was no, they weren't nice.
"But it's okay, I have another family. A chosen one." You smiled. Yunho wished to be a part of that family, the ones that make you happy.
"You and Seonghwa hyung have known each other for a long time, right? I think Wooyoung told me you've known each other since you were kids." Yunho tried to steer the conversation to another topic. Also, he was curious about your relationship with Seonghwa, how far the two of you went back.
"Yes, our mothers were close friends so we met through them. I can't even remember what age we met. And we've been together ever since. Seonghwa's been with me through everything." You said.
"Wow. That's even longer than me and Mingi. We met in elementary school. Stuck together from then on." He smiled.
"What about the others?" You asked.
"Oh, we met San in high school. Then Yeosang and Hongjoong in college. I guess we just all got along despite having difference interests in life." He shrugged.
"That's nice. Wooyoung joined us first. Then Jongho. All met through different kitchens." You said.
"You're like the 'it' crew or something. The popular kids in school." Yunho pointed out.
"Not at all! We just... work well together. We understand each other and have working styles that compliment each other. I don't usually stay at restaurants for a long time, I like to change my environments and gain exposure. I'm just grateful the 3 follow me." You said.
"Is this the first time you've stayed at a place for so long?" Yunho asked. You nodded your head. Usually by now, you would have left. But you didn't feel the urge to leave yet.
"I hope you don't leave." He said honestly, squeezing your hand. You merely smiled in reply.
"Don't worry about that now." You said. You didn't want to make promises that you were unsure of.
The rest of the courses came and went. You and Yunho got to know each other more, chatting every now and then about the most random topics while enjoying the delicious foods.
It felt like time had stopped and you were just in your own bubble with him. That feeling was so unfamiliar to you but you liked it.
"Thank you for the amazing dinner. It was really good." You smiled as Yunho opened the car door for you.
"You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the food. Although, I wish the portions were bigger." He complained with a purse of his lips. You laughed and sat inside while he ran to the driver's seat. Yunho was like Seonghwa in that aspect, they both had big appetites and were never easily satiated.
"You know what? I think I'm going to name my manatee, Yunnie." You smiled, lifting the stuffed manatee in front of your face. Yunho burst out laughing.
"Are you naming a manatee after me?!" He asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, it's only fitting. They can't be mean. Plus, you're the one that bought him for me." You giggled.
"I told you, (y/n). I can be mean. I just can't be mean to you." Realising what he said, Yunho slapped a hand over his mouth. You started laughing, seeing his ears turn red.
"Ignore what I just said."
"You're cute, Yunho." You smiled. If only Yunho wasn't driving, he would want to look at the expression on your face.
When Yunho pulled up to your house, he was about to say something to you; to thank you for coming out with him and spending practically your whole day with him.
"Still hungry? Are you up for supper?" You beat him to it. However, it wasn't what Yunho was expecting. He thought you would just thank him and leave for the night, going to see him the next day. Not once did he think you would invite him upstairs.
"What? You said the portions were small right?" You chuckled, finding his confused face so adorable.
"I-It's okay, you know? If you're tired, you don't have to-"
"If I was tired, I wouldn't have offered." You cut him off. Yunho nodded, turning out of the driveway and going to the carpark instead. You headed upstairs with him.
"Make yourself comfortable." You said as you opened the door, putting your bag aside and heading straight for the kitchen.
"Anything I can help with?" He asked, locking your front door for you. He didn't want to sit and wait for you to cook, preferring to cook with you.
"Is a frittata okay? I have goats cheese, bacon, tomatoes and spinach." You scratched your head.
"Sounds good." He smiled. Yunho cracked the eggs while you prepared the add ins, chopping up the vegetables and bacon into smaller bits. When Yunho was done, you beat the eggs with some creme fraiche, seasoned with salt and pepper before adding the tomatoes, spinach and bacon.
"Careful, it's hot. But we're going to dot the goat's cheese around." You said. Yunho nodded and put the goat's cheese over the top together with you.
"Time for the oven." You put the hot pan into the oven to continue cooking the middle of the frittata.
"I'll set a timer." You put the timer on your phone and went to sit on the couch with Yunho to wait for the frittata to cook.
"I should put these in water." Usually Seonghwa settles the flowers for you, putting them in a vase. But now that he wasn't here, you had to do it. Grabbing the same vase he uses, you put water in.
"Here, let me help." Yunho unwrapped the tulips for you and put them into the vase with water.
"Thank you." You smiled as he put the vase on your counter. Yunho looked at Yunnie, the manatee, who was now perched in your lap. Was it weird or creepy of him to be jealous of a plush? He kind of wished that he was able to lay in your lap.
"(y/n), what did you think of today?" Yunho asked. You did say you liked it but he wanted to be sure again. You thought about it for a while, humming as your hand stroked the manatee plush.
"It was great, Yunho. I loved the aquarium and dinner. I enjoyed spending time with you." You said shyly.
"I'm really happy to hear that. Thank you for coming out with me. The aquarium was fun but being with you made it better." He smiled.
"Does this mean you'll go out with me again?" He asked with hopeful eyes. You teased him by looking like you were contemplating it, tapping your chin.
"Stop~" He whined, pressing himself against your shoulder to hide his face from you.
"Yes, I'd love to go out with you again." You said between your laughs, your hand coming up to stroke the back of his head.
When the frittata was done, you and Yunho sat at the counter to eat together. Well, Yunho ate most of it. You assured him that you only wanted a few bites, unlike him, you were rather full from dinner already. Although, you still sat with him even if you were done eating just to spend time with him.
"Don't fall asleep now." It was his opportunity to tease you back.
"Stop! I was embarrassed enough. I was the one who invited you over and yet, I fell asleep before you left the house." Your hands flew to your warm cheeks.
"Don't worry, it was cute." Yunho sent you a smug smile, patting your head like you usually did with him.
"Now you admitting to watching me sleep is creepy." You laughed, jabbing him back.
"I didn't watch you sleep!" He exclaimed. After the food was done, you and Yunho did the dishes together. He knew he shouldn't stay any later, you both needed rest before work tomorrow.
"I'll see you tomorrw, (y/n). Thank you again for coming out with me." Yunho smiled, looking down at you as he leaned against the door frame.
"Please, Yunho. There's nothing to thank me for. I enjoyed myself, genuinely. I should be the one thanking you. You brought me for my first aquarium experience. You planned and paid for everything too." You laughed.
"As long as you enjoyed yourself." He whispered, holding your hand and rubbing the back with his thumb.
You smiled up at him, moving closer until you wrapped your arms around him. At your actions, Yunho wrapped his own arms around you, engulfing you in a big hug.
"Goodnight." You wished as you pulled away.
"Goodnight." He bowed his head and walked down the hall. As you closed the door, you leaned against it with a smile on your face.
"Next time." You said, eyes casting over to the manatee plush that was on the couch. Heading over, you picked it up and hugged it to your chest, a smile slowly forming on your face.
For some reason, you were looking forward to the next occasion you were able to spend time with Yunho.

A gilded Brooklyn evening envelops you. It further transforms elegantly as the sun dips below the horizon. Around you, the silhouettes of trees stretch and bend, their leaves rustling gently in the evening breeze. It's in one of these timeless structures that Wanda has woven her dreams, with her restaurant, Hasta Feliz.
After spending a year in the heart of Catalonia, Wanda meticulously planned to work towards that dream, especially given the possibility that realizing her other dream—you—might never be possible again. You've always admired Wanda’s tenacity, the way she harnessed her experiences—both good and bad—into passion. It was a trait you fell in love with and, ultimately, the reason you found your way back to her, despite being more than a year late in doing so.
The restaurant's door, ornate with wrought iron designs, pushes open with a gentle nudge. The hostess greets you warmly, addressing you by your name. She leads you to the kitchen table, which offers a prime view of the open kitchen where all the magic happens. At the center of the action is your wife, dressed in full chef's gear, sampling dishes being prepared by her kitchen staff.
You rest your chin on the heel of your hand, a subtle smile playing on your lips, contentedly watching her perform like an artist. Wanda began as an art student at NYU, and while her current career might deviate somewhat from the degree she earned, you believe it's only natural for Wanda to have found another avenue to express her creativity.
Wanda moves gracefully around her stage, a look of unyielding concentration etched on her face. Her commanding presence is undeniably alluring, both authoritative and captivating in a manner that, even after all these years, never fails to draw you in. Dark, intent eyes scan over her dominion, ensuring each plate is a masterpiece before it's allowed to exit her kitchen.
Her commanding presence fills the room, drawing all eyes to her. To you, this side of her is intensely attractive, and as you sit there, you find yourself wondering if others perceive her the same way. Glancing down at the wedding band you wear on your finger, a possessive instinct tugs at you. The idea of someone else being equally entranced by your wife makes you slightly uneasy. But an even stronger feeling is the perpetual awe that she is yours.
She occasionally glances up, catching staff members' eyes, and with just a look or a small nod, redirects their actions. It's mesmerizing how she manages to communicate so much without words, and you marvel at her ability to lead so effortlessly.
You're jerked from your reverie when she looks in your direction. Her eyes light up as she spots you, and for a moment, the chaos and noise fades into the background. It's just the two of you in that instance. She sends you a discreet wink before returning to her duties, bringing a light blush to your cheeks. James, the restaurant’s sommelier, promptly pours you a glass of wine and serves you a small charcuterie board to accompany it. You thank him with a smile and quickly indulge in a 1998 Rioja, the aged liquid burning down your throat before spreading a comforting warmth through your chest.
It’s a full house tonight, save for the table near the window you've reserved for your friend, Kate Bishop. She has transitioned from being a journalist to a food and lifestyle contributor for many renowned magazines. Wanda's restaurant has only been open for two months, but with Kate set to cover their 10-course tasting, you're hopeful all of New York will be talking about it soon.
“You’re early.”
Temporarily handing over the kitchen's control to her sous chef, Wanda takes a seat beside you and sneaks a bit of brie from your board. You swivel your chair to face her, already wearing an alcohol-induced cheeky grin. “I've missed you all day.”
Wanda beams and leans in to plant a chaste kiss on your cheek. But before she can pull away, you gently cup the back of her neck, stealing a more proper kiss from her lips. Wanda blushes, glancing around to see if any of the staff witnessed the exchange, and you can't help but suppress a chuckle at her reaction. In retaliation, Wanda seizes your glass of wine, taking a lengthy swig that nearly empties its contents, then wipes traces of it from the edge of her mouth. A smirk plays on your wife’s lips, and you exert every ounce of restraint to keep from wiping that smirk away yourself.
“Nervous?” you ask, your hand rising to massage the knots on Wanda’s shoulders. With your other hand, you signal James for a refill.
“A little,” Wanda confesses. She was over the moon when she learned of Kate's intention to review her restaurant. Only once before has a food critic penned thoughts on her new restaurant—it was a piece in a lesser-known tabloid that awarded her a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Despite reassurances that it's a respectable score for a newcomer, Wanda couldn't help but fixate on it. Now, she's on a quest to earn that perfect rating.
“Relax, you’re going to do great,” you say. “I think it helps that Kate loves Spanish cuisine.”
“That’s the thing, there’s more pressure serving someone who’s quite taken and familiar with the food.”
Suddenly, a flurry of anxious voices emanate from the open kitchen. While there's no dramatic crash, you notice two of Wanda’s chefs exchanging nervous glances, hands slightly trembling, as they try to discreetly deal with a small mishap away from the customers' prying eyes.
Wanda's sharp eyes catch the nervous interaction. Without hesitation, she's on her feet and swiftly approaching the two chefs. She glances your way briefly, a hint of frustration in her eyes. “Sorry,” she mouths to you as she delves into the matter.
You pull out your phone to distract yourself for a while, and notice a message from Kate timestamped five minutes ago. She says she's close and that she's bringing a plus one. Your brows knit together; the reservation was for two, intended for you and her. Adjusting your plans on the fly, you realize you might have to have your dinner elsewhere tonight. It's fortunate that your wife operates a restaurant; you're almost certain there are set-aside orders in the back you can indulge in.
You’re still typing up a reply to Kate when the delicate chime of the entrance bell lifts your eyes. Kate steps in, wearing a suit for the occasion. Beside her stands Yelena, looking slightly out of place in her edgier, more casual attire. As soon as they catch sight of you, you offer a small wave in greeting.
“Hey,” Kate starts, taking in the scene before her, especially the ongoing, discreet chaos in the kitchen. “Seems like a busy night.”
“It sure is. And Yelena, what a surprise.”
Yelena chuckles, “Got wind of dinner at a posh place. Thought I'd tag along.”
You turn to Kate with a restrained smile. “You did mention to her that this is, well, Wanda's place, right?”
It’s Yelena, however, who answers, “She did. I'm truly eager for dinner tonight.”
“Good. That’s... good,” you reply, feeling slightly off-kilter.
Kate shoots you a teasing grin. “Oh, don’t wear your nerves on your sleeve, Y/N,” she chides gently. “After all, you’re not the one preparing our meal, right?”
A laugh escapes you, and you dismissively shake your head at her playful jab. “Your table’s right over there. I’ll join you in just a moment.”
You hurry back to the kitchen. Wanda is right in the thick of it, her brow furrowed in concentration as she meticulously adjusts a plate, ensuring that each element is perfectly placed.
You edge gently into her line of sight, attempting to get her attention. “Wanda.”
She remains unmoved, as if the world has fallen away from her.
You inhale, hesitating for a brief moment before uttering the one thing that you know will seize her attention. “Yelena. She’s here.”
Her head snaps up, “What?!” Wanda exclaims, her hands momentarily stilling.
You explain quickly, “Kate brought Yelena along tonight. She's seated with her, waiting for dinner.”
Wanda’s eyes go wide—a little too wide—that under any different occasion you’d find funny and would tease her endlessly for it. But the present moment treads a delicate line between a comical irony and a grave reunion of sorts; the memory still lingers that you cheated on Yelena with Wanda, and initially, you were with Yelena because the latter had cheated on you.
While you trust Yelena not to let personal bias sway her judgment, it's clear why your wife is teetering on the edge of panic.
“S-Should I cancel?” Wanda asks.
“No, no, no,” you say quickly. “Baby, you can do this.”
Wanda bites her lower lip, a nervous habit you’ve come to recognize over the years. “Okay, let’s think this through. Yelena is professional. She won't let past grievances affect her review. And the food... it’s top-notch. They’ll love it,” she tries to reassure herself more than you.
“They will,” you assure her, nodding. “What can I do to help?”
“Could you keep them entertained and assist me in presenting the dishes?”
“Absolutely.”
Wanda looks a bit on edge, but she gives you a grateful smile and plants a quick kiss on your lips. “Thanks for everything.”
“Anytime.”
-
The 10-course meal Wanda whipped up kicks off with an appetizer that makes your mouth water. You walk with her as she serves it to Yelena and Kate. She's ditched her chef's hat tonight, and you can see those little wild hairs on her forehead with her hair all tied up into a strict bun.
The gazpacho sits elegantly on the table, vibrant and almost begging for a photo. Wanda, poised and with a touch of flair, presents it: “This is not just any gazpacho. It's the essence of summer, distilled into a plate. Tomatoes basking in sunshine, cucumber with a hint of earth, and a watermelon gel that adds an unexpected twist.”
She suggests the, “For those wanting a fuller experience, there's the Albariño from Rías Baixas. It's crisp, coastal, and James will bring it to you.”
“It's beautiful,” Kate comments, digging in, while Yelena gives Wanda a faint smile. Wanda clears her throat, feeling the intensity of your ex-girlfriend's gaze, while you watch her, seeing up close for the first time how she introduces her dishes.
Wanda gives your waist a sly pinch, pulling you out of your daze.
“Ow!”
With a poised smile, Wanda says, “Enjoy your meal,” then heads to the kitchen. You're about to trail after her when Yelena gets your attention.
“Y/N,” Yelena says. “Sit with us.”
After a moment's hesitation, you find a chair, drawing it up to the table to sit between the two. James arrives with two glasses of wine, and you request a third glass for yourself.
“I didn’t know you were in town,” you venture, trying to ease into casual conversation.
“Just for three weeks,” Yelena responds, taking a sip of her wine. “I’m on assignment.”
“I hope the long-distance thing is treating you both well,” you say.
Kate sighs dramatically, “It’s a challenge, but we make do. Frequent flyer miles, late-night calls, the usual.”
Yelena adds, “And surprises. Like tonight.”
You fidget slightly, hoping to navigate the conversation away from the potential landmines of the past. But Yelena catches your unease. “You seem... tense.”
“Can you blame me?” You try to deflect, glaring at Kate for the last-minute heads up.
Yelena chuckles, that hearty laugh you remember so well. “Relax, Y/N. I don’t pull any strings with Kate's reviews. But between you and me,” she leans in slightly, “that appetizer? It's a 5 out of 5 in my book.”
Your smile relaxes. Maybe the evening won't be so treacherous after all.
Just in time, Wanda returns with the second appetizer for the night.
-
It takes about two and a half hours for the pair to work their way through the entire tasting menu. By the end, Kate has undone the button on her trousers, while Yelena, full and drowsy from the meal, struggles to keep her eyes open.
“Where's Wanda?” Kate asks, returning the bill with her credit card to the waiter.
“I'll go find her,” you say, rising from your seat.
You head toward the open kitchen but don't find your wife. After asking a few staff members, they direct you to the staff room. There, you find Wanda sitting on a bench, about to open the tupperware of food you prepared for her earlier.
“Hey,” you greet as you approach. She's shed her uniform and is now dressed in the same clothes she wore when she left the apartment this morning. Her tired eyes brighten up slightly at the sight of you. She grins at you, masking the exhaustion you’ve grown so attuned to recognizing.
“You did amazing out there,” you start, thumbing the faint shadows beneath her eyes. “Kate looked genuinely impressed. I've never seen her react that way before.”
Wanda tilts her head, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Thanks, baby. But, I noticed them looking around after dinner, were they looking for me?”
You nod, “They did want to talk to you, yes.”
Her face pales slightly. “Is that a good idea? With Yelena… after everything?”
“Yelena and I have talked about…well, us—and that includes you—several times in the past. She doesn't hold any grudges against you, I promise.”
Wanda sighs, toying with the edges of the tupperware. “I just don't want to make things awkward for you or for her.”
You draw her closer, brushing a kiss on her temple. “It’s in the past, Wands. We’ve moved on, and so has she.”
She smiles, leaning into your embrace. “Okay.”
As you both stand up to make your way back to Kate and Yelena's table, you suddenly notice the tupperware still clutched in Wanda’s hand. You pause, an incredulous look on your face. “Wait, you're actually going to eat that?”
She looks down at the container and then back at you with feigned innocence. “What? I'm hungry.”
“That?” you say, pointing to the tupperware. “With all the culinary masterpieces you've been churning out tonight, you're going to eat... whatever that is I threw together this morning?”
Wanda narrows her eyes, trying to suppress a grin. “Don't you dare insult my favorite meal, especially when it’s made by my favorite person.”
You shake your head, your cheeks warming up. Even after all these years, it's amazing how Wanda can still make you blush like a smitten teenager. “You're nuts for preferring anything I whip up in the kitchen. It's like a five-year-old's attempt compared to your gourmet dishes.”
She pokes your chest playfully, “Maybe you put a hex on me, you know, making me helplessly fall in love with you.”
It's so cheesy that you burst into laughter, draping an arm around her. “Yeah, maybe I did.”
Wanda giggles, resting her head against your shoulder briefly before you both continue toward the awaiting table.
-
“She did not do that!”
“She actually did!”
Yelena is grinning from ear to ear, her eyes darting between you and Wanda. You groan, sinking lower in your seat, a slight blush creeping onto your cheeks.
Wanda nods enthusiastically, her laughter causing a few stray curls to fall into her eyes. “She did! Y/N, trying to cook a romantic dinner for me and setting off the smoke alarm. Not only did our apartment's alarm go off, but it triggered the entire building's system.”
Yelena wipes a tear from her eye, trying to suppress her own laughter. “And having the entire building evacuate? Oh, that’s just golden.”
You hide your face in your hands, “It was our anniversary date! I wanted it to be special.”
“And it certainly was,” Wanda adds with a smirk.
Feigning offense, you reach across the table to try and snatch the tupperware filled with the meal you'd made for Wanda. “Alright, if my culinary skills are such a laughing matter, perhaps you shouldn't enjoy my latest creation.”
Wanda holds onto it defensively, pulling it close with a teasing grin. “Not happening. Despite that incident, this is still my favorite dish.”
“I wouldn't have thought Y/N to be the clumsy type. Next to her, I'm a complete klutz,” Yelena remarks.
“Can't argue with that,” Kate adds, receiving a playful swat from Yelena.
“I did have burnt toast for breakfast for a while,” you say with a smirk, alluding to the brief time you had with Yelena. It feels unreal, discussing the past so openly and without that familiar twinge in your chest.
Suddenly, Kate clinks her glass, drawing attention to herself with a burgeoning smile. “Well, speaking of choosing who gets to make our burnt toast in the morning,” she begins, beaming at Yelena, “I asked this one to marry me.”
“Congratulations!” Wanda exclaims, and you mirror her sentiment with a broad smile.
Yelena simply smiles, her usually fierce demeanor softened, eyes glistening with joy. She holds up her hand, showing off a beautiful, but temporary, band.
“I found out before she could surprise me with the custom ring,” Yelena mumbles, looking visibly smitten. “So she panicked and proposed with this.”
Kate shrugs, a little embarrassed. “It’s a placeholder until the real one is ready. Still, the sentiment remains.”
Wanda laughs, nudging you with her elbow. “Speaking of proposals,” she starts. “Remember last year when I popped the question to you?"
You groan for the nth time, hiding your face in your hands. “Not that story.”
“We were by this old swing, and I just... I felt it, you know? That it was the right time. So I got down on one knee, trying to make it special and romantic,” Wanda recalls, rolling her eyes.
“And?” Kate prompts.
“She said 'no'!”
“It wasn't a real no!” you protest, feeling the warmth rise in your cheeks. “I just... I had my own plans, okay? I wanted to be the one to propose.”
Yelena stifles a laugh behind her hand. “That sounds just like you. Always wanting the last word.”
Kate nudges her, “Oh, and you didn’t?”
Yelena feigns innocence, “I just said yes.”
“It all worked out in the end, for all of us, didn't it?” you muse, your eyes flickering between Wanda and the newly engaged couple across the table. Wanda’s fingers intertwine with yours, giving a gentle squeeze. But it's Yelena's slightly misted eyes, softened from their usual guarded sheen, that draws you in. The slight upturn at the corner of her mouth suggests she's pondering the same thought: the richness of your history together didn't always follow the conventional path of strong friendships. Still, you're both grateful for the memories you've created and for Yelena's grace in forgiving past transgressions.
It's a fitting evening to begin a new chapter, and you're hopeful that each subsequent page will be even better.
Yelena nods ever so slightly. “Yeah,” she exhales, her voice a thin whisper over the candlelights, “I suppose it did.”
It's late, and with everyone gone, the four of you are left to close up the restaurant.
With a swirl of your wine and a nod towards the remaining bottle in the ice bucket, you ask the group, “One more for the road?”

1. What’s a movie that never fails to make you laugh?
2. What’s something really decadent you’ve always wanted to treat yourself to?
3. What do you love most about each of your pets?
You know, I'm not a huge movie re-watcher in general, so this is going to make me sound... idk, something. But. Saw? Like the first one, the 2004 one. Yes it's a horror film (though I would argue more psychological than anything) but it's also genuinely really fucking funny. It helps that it was written by two Australians so that particular brand of dark humour is right up my alley lmao.
Degustation menu at one of the winery restaurants in Central Otago. Ridiculous and decadent and delightful. ONE DAY.
ALL THE THINGS, but here we go: -Dog #1 is an anxious little bean but by GOD he loves us. He considers it his number one job to ensure we are herded together at ALL TIMES and if he can't position himself to where he can see both me and my spouse he gets very grumpy until we're back under his watchful eye. -Dog #2 has the biggest personality in the tiniest body. She has the most expressive little face you've ever seen and is just a fucking delight. -Cat #1 was actually a real snob when we first got her... and then a few years later she escaped, got clipped by a car, and ended up losing her leg. And idk if it just made her realise that actually we would fix anything that went wrong or what it is, but ever since then she has been THE friendliest, most affectionate cat you've ever met in your life. -Cat #2 is obnoxiously cuddly in the best possible way. He spends most of his day in my spouse's lap while my spouse is working, even though my spouse sits the most bisexually you've ever seen and it cannot POSSIBLY be comfortable for this poor cat. He's just a fluffy little limpet. -Cat #3 is a HUNTER and reminds us every day that we are cruel to not let him outside to wage war on the local bird population. They have a catio and he sits in it and tries to lure birds close enough that he can reach through the wire and get them. Idk what he'd do if he ever succeeded, because he still couldn't get access to them, but it's incredibly funny how determined he is.

Την ονομάζουν, πώς αλλιώς; Jazz in Jazz.

Day 15: Tuesday January 14th, 2025 [Kinosaki]
Breakfast: Apple Danish & a latte
Lunch: beef katsu ekiben (train bento)
Dinner: maybe one of the nicest dinners I’ve had!
Steps: 7,185
We checked out of our Kyoto accomodation at 9:45am and headed to the 7/11 to organise our luggage delivery to Osaka. Morgan filled out the paperwork and it felt very strange to leave our luggage at a convenience store. I took photos of our suitcases, screenshot the location on maps and made sure my AirTag was working. Paranoid much? After that we got the bus to Kyoto station, had a coffee and purchased our ‘ekiben’ lunches to get the Shinkansen to Kinosaki - the only part of our trip that Morgan organised before our departure haha.
The train ride was about 2.5 hours and it flew by! I finished my book, ate my bento and listened to music and suddenly we were there! We’d sailed past lots of fields full of snow and were pleased to see that Kinosaki was also snow capped! Upon closer inspection though, it was leftover icy snow and not cute, powdery goodness. Ah well! Still snow!
Our hotel was 7 minutes from the station but it was 2:15pm and check-in wasn’t until 3pm, so we dropped our bags and went for a walk. The whole vibe of Kinosaki is that of a ‘resort town’ where you can walk around in your robes and visit different onsens. I was incredibly hesitant to go to a public onsen for a few reasons:
1. They’re segregate by gender so I wouldn’t be able to sit with Morgan
2. I didn’t want to be naked (mandatory) around a bunch of Japanese women
3. I have tattoos and they are not allowed in a lot of onsens due to symbolic ties with gangs.
Morgan had thankfully booked us into a hotel with their own private onsens, Kinosaki Onsen Sensui - problem solved! They were tattoo friendly, included passes to all other onsens in town (if Morgan was so inclined) and included all meals! The staff were super lovely and very eager to make sure we enjoyed our stay. We had a comprehensive ‘check-in’ process and enjoyed a complimentary welcome tea and sweet upon arrival.
Our room was ‘traditional style’ - we had lattice-style sliding doors, a cute little sunroom and a short table with floor cushions to sit on. There was no shower in our room - we would need to use the showers next to the private pools downstairs. Our host, Kamako, gave us a tour of the hotel and showed us around our room. She gave us a map of all the onsens in town and pointed out her favourite. She spoke English very well and was adorably hospitable.
We’d been given robes to use (Yukata) if we were going to roam around. Morgan spent about half an hour stressing about wearing them correctly, but thankfully our room had a guide on how to wear them. They also had a hand-drawn ‘Welcome to Kinosaki’ guide that had recommendations from hotel staff that was really cute, and very helpful! We had some sake in our room before heading down to the hotel onsens at 4.30pm. They weren’t reservable, but luckily one was free! Once we’d showered and hopped in we realised how hot it was and had to crack a window. We spent about 15 minutes in the bath before getting out and heading back to our room haha. We then got ready and headed down to dinner at 6pm, as instructed by staff.
When I say this dinner was divine, it is an understatement. When booking, the website had stated that crab was their main delicacy, but I don’t like shellfish, so Morgan had booked us the ‘beef menu’. We arrived to a beautiful restaurant space, next to the lobby, with personalised menus and a handwritten welcome note. This place was so cute! Kamako was back as our server and guided us through our 7-course meal. I’d never dined in degustation way before. Morgan has some additional seafood in his courses, but mine were all vegetation or beef. They were delicious! My favourite was absolutely the Tajima beef grilled steak - it was buttery and served with delicious salt & wasabi. It is quite possibly the best steak I’ve ever eaten. We ended the meal with some caramel sorbet with sweet potato custard, served by the chef, and I hope our compliments didn’t come across too hasty.
After dinner we were treated to a complimentary sake tasting in the foyer. They were yum and the third was the most fragrant. We then put on our Yukata coats and took a brief stroll to the Main Street to take photos of the river lit by the streetlights. It was very beautiful even if the snow was a wee bit patchy.
Back in the hotel we treated ourselves to a bath in the second onsen (much nicer and less steamy, before the heat made us sleepy and we jumped out. In our room we read our books, had some green tea and were delighted to find that our room had been set up with traditional, mat-style beds for us to sleep on.
I really didn’t do any research for Kinosaki, as this was Morgan’s project, but it has been an absolute bloody delight! This specific onsen-hotel is beautiful, the staff are lovely and the town is gorgeous. I can’t wait to explore it more tomorrow before we head off to Osaka!

Ten years from now on would crawl through faster than than immovable queue of petrified hydra he got himself stuck in. Poising elegantly with crown of indifference or gliding down mound of ashes -- his punishment walks abreast with indefatigability. Waiting made even the air taste of brine. Woe to him, for six more people couldn't decide whether they wanted a large menu or a light snack down their stomachs. The only thing he wanted right now was that one pack of warm cheese-coated nuggets desired greatly once in a blue moon and what he couldn't get from regular store. Now, how hard was that to get?
Of course, on spot he could violate the law of motion divided by time ... but whilst endearingly taken by such oblique tergiversation to hold -- defiant of winds and walker on seas was sure he hardly flinched to give pretext for suspicion or exposure even though there was always time for degustation of forces. Coincidental or maybe not but rather sensational is the reflex that guides his vision to stray and not root on thoughts cultivating understatement. There was someone who visually did not seem to quite fit into locality frame of context, someone bluntly ignoring portion of food behind the table and rather tracing with mapping eyes; a count down to ease tightness in his face. This Gotham city sure was one hella suspicious place. Out of the whole line, he was the one he was looking at, and while it certainly wasn't prohibited by law to gaze at anyone he was piqued by ambiguity of such long pointed degree of fixed stare which he had noticed several times before. A curious amalgam of the anti-traditional and the modern.
Painted face pale ceruse, denoting suit once violaceous engulfed in a crumpled shade of defiled mulberry. His inner thunder rising. Lipstick smeared upon brim-contours reaching parabolic heights. Additionally, another thing that irked him more than green hair ( and a whisp of 'yoohoo~' lying unspoken but resonating so much from his countenance he expected to hear it aloud any minute ) he so tried to ignore when eyes ran over him ... not something that had to do with personal conception but rather a presentation of the external form reminding him of a clown ... but the worst part? The more Pietro looked at him the more he was smiling ... and it was that kind of smile that would prettily put on you lavallière decorated by poisonous malachites of distress.
― Huhh??? He compounded the problem by trying to make wrong things right. Pietro's sharp intake of oxygen via nostrils resulted in a brisk 'look-away' for a solid moment until secretion delivered recurrence and certainty that maybe this time the funny chap got bored of his prolonged act of ignorance except no ... still. Why. Why was he still staring?! ... past bearing, full of holes, intolerable. Eyes cerulean like wintry gales exposed with a slide of sun-dodging lenses, and as terrible as it was fascinating within absurdity of the moment the situation created a fusion of disparate elements; eye lock at length finally happened under timing such as pop of soda can that seemed louder than ripple of noises withindoors.

PINTXOS-PERFECT

Believe it or not, there are one or two people out there who aren’t inspired by the idea of San Sebástian.
The joy of choosing pintxos from the counter ? ‘Health and safety hazard.’ But everything’s fresh! ‘Don’t fancy it’. What about the delicious spider-crab tarts? ‘Don’t like crab’. Gateau Basque? ‘Now I do like cheesecake - but why no biscuit base?’
Thankfully I’ve only experienced this pintxos prejudice from a handful of people. For the rest of you: if you don’t yet know that San Sebástian is the culinary capital of Europe, with more Michelin starred restaurants per capita than anywhere else on the continent, then just tell me which rock you’ve been living under and I’ll send my people round. With delicious morsels of wild mushroom. I’m not a monster after all.
Then there are those who love San Sebástian, have visited it several times, but have only the vaguest recommendations of where to eat. Yes I know. Everywhere is good. But just telling me ‘it’s all about the pintxos’ (no shit Sherlock) isn’t really giving me much to go on. So, for those of you venturing to Spain’s most edible city for the first time, or just can’t remember where you ate last time, here are my top recommendations.
First of all, get yourself on a good food tour. And we went on the best, thanks to a proper, detailed recommendation from my mate Mykayla at work. The first thing you learn about Eskerne, founder of Discover San Sebastian is that she is more revered than the Mayor- and knows more about the history and gastronomy of the region than any mayor. She met us at the Hotel de Londres at 10.30 sharp and deposited us in the park over four hours later, sated and gasping for superlatives about the food we had eaten. This was a PhD in Pintxos - spider crab tartlets, mind-boggling asian-fusion scallops with samphire, wild mushrooms mixed with egg yolk, octopus on sauteed potato…On and on it went, setting off many several taste bombs in my mouth. Do yourselves a favour and book her as soon as you have booked your flights.

But you don’t just have to eat pintxos. My daughter found Bar El Kbzon near the City’s surfing beach. For my money the best of San Sebástian’s restaurants: cafe-informal with stunning views of the beach at sunset, and a menu we ended up ordering in its entirety: best black pudding I’ve ever tasted, heavenly hake and pig’s ear on borlotti beans just three of the reasons to go back. The chef likes Thai food so there were some inspired flavours going on in all of these - plus he makes a mean pad thai if you fancy that.

Great places to eat are not limited to the city centre. My cousin and her husband took us to Kako Jatetxea, a bistro with classical charm in a town called Astigarraga, just outside the city centre and famous for its cider houses (the main drink of the region along with Txakoli - more of this later). They had a lot going on in their menu but you can’t go wrong with their surf and turf - a whole pan-fried turbot in a butter sauce and a mammoth rib of beef.
Want to find that ultimate Gateau Basque? Eskerne pointed us in the direction of La Viña and advised us to order just a half portion each. The aggressive rubbernecking required to get to the counter and get attention meant I forgot the Spanish for ‘half portion’ and emerged with the full three slices for each of us. It didn’t matter in the end as we demolished them all in a matter of minutes. We also forgot to order the Ximenez sherry to pour over the gateau - Mykayla says this is a must.
And finally, for super fine dining head to Galerna Jan Edan. I usually prefer generous rustic food to a degustation menu but this one gave us a night to remember: imaginative creations with intense flavours from prawn, pork belly, hake and a strawberry and violet ice cream that over-stimulated my taste buds in the best possible way. All washed down by the region’s signature Txakoli wine (you say Txakoli, I say Chocoli, let’s just pour another glass and forget about it).

There are hundreds upon hundreds of pintxos bars, restaurants, cafes and gelateria crammed into this petite, beautiful and dramatic-looking city. Don't say I didn't tell you - and try making these dishes to get you in the mood.
Crab Tarts

I have done my best to recreate the flavours of the version I inhaled in Ganbera pintxos bar. And guaranteed no soggy bottom-pastry. Serves 4 as a starter.
Ingredients:
250g ready-made shortcrust pastry (or make your own)
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
225g white crab meat
Generous tbsp. brown crab meat
1 banana shallot, chopped finely
1 carrot, chopped finely
4 cloves garlic, chopped finely
250ml shellfish stock
60 ml cognac
3 medium tomatoes, skinned seeded and chopped
1 tsp chilli flakes
1 bunch parsley
25g fresh breadcrumbs, browned in a little oil and tossed with chopped parsley
Knob of butter
How to make.
Heat the oven to 200C.
Roll out the pastry and cut 8 rounds to fill 8 individual tart cases. Pop the tins onto a baking sheet and bake blind for 10-12 minutes, remove from the oven and put on the side to cool in their tins. When cool, remove from the tins and place the pastry shells back on the baking sheet.

To make the filling. Heat 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil in a frying pan and saute the onions, carrot and chilli flakes for 10 minutes. Add the garlic and fry for another minute or so, then add the tomatoes, salt and pepper, cognac, shellfish stock and 200ml water. Bring to a simmer and continue to simmer until the sauce has reduced and you can drag your wooden spoon through it without the mixture closing up quickly.

Turn off the heat, add the crab meats and a bunch of chopped parsley. Cool the mix.

Turn up the oven to 220C. Fill each of the tart shells with the crab mixture then top each tart with the breadcrumbs and a small knob of butter. Pop back into the oven for 6-8 minutes until crisp and hot. Serve immediately.
Two Easy Peasy Pintxos

As a parting gift from our tour, Eskerne gave me a copy of Josema Azpeita an Ritxar Tolosa’s The Pintxo Trail. None of the recipes give proportions so I have done the hard work for you while adapting them slightly. Serves 2-3
Pintxos with cream cheese, honey and walnuts
For each person cut 3 slices of a baguette loaf at a diagonal and toast lightly and rub with a clove of garlic. Cool slightly then top with cream cheese with herbs (philly is fine), top with a couple of walnut halves and drizzle with honey. Complete with a sprinkling of parsley and season.

Esclavida (catalan vegetables) with anchovy
Heat the oven to 150C.Baste an aubergine and a red pepper in extra virgin olive oil, pop onto a baking tray and into the oven for 20 minutes. Remove and then skin the aubergine and red pepper and cut each into 4 slices. Toast the bread and rub with a clove of garlic. Drizzle the toast with olive oil and season. Place the broad strips of cooked vegetable on top and top with two marinated anchovies (buy these from the supermarket chiller cabinet, don’t use ones from a jar). Make a quick garlic dressing with olive oil, garlic and parsley and drizzle over the top.
Gateau Basque

This version of La Viña’s classic is from Brat restaurant in London via Claire Ptak’s latest confection Love is a Pink Cake. A genius addition of tapioca flour and cornflour gives a wonderful texture. Serves 6.
Ingredients:
450g cream cheese
125g caster sugar
3 large eggs
250g double cream
1 tbsp. Crème fraiche
1 tbsp. Vanilla extract
1 tbsp. Tapioca flour
1 tbsp, cornflour
¼ tsp. Sea salt
How to make:
Preheat the oven to 230C.
Line a 15cm round and 8cm deep cake tin with a single sheet of baking paper that comes up further than the sides of the tin - this caters for the dramatic rise of the gateau.
Whisk together the cream cheese and sugar, add the eggs one at a time and continue whisking between each addition until fully incorporated.
In a separate bowl, mix together the remaining ingredients, then add to the cheese mixture and mix everything until smooth and well combined.
Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 40 minutes until black on top, puffed but still has a little wobble. Cool for at least an hour until set, then serve at room temperature.

This goes magically with some poached plums which you can make while the gateau is in the oven.

Exploring the Essence of a Fine Dining Indian Restaurant Experience
The Modern Revival of Indian Fine Dining
In recent years, the global food landscape has witnessed a renaissance in Indian cuisine — not just in terms of flavour, but also in presentation, service, and ambiance. The rise of the fine dining Indian restaurant is redefining how people perceive traditional Indian meals, elevating them beyond casual takeouts and buffet-style spreads. Nowhere is this evolution more evident than in metropolitan cities like Melbourne, where culinary innovation and cultural authenticity meet in a harmonious blend.

What Defines a Fine Dining Indian Restaurant?
Fine dining is more than just exquisite food — it’s about the complete sensory experience. When it comes to an Indian fine dining restaurant, several key elements stand out:
Curated Menus: Dishes are thoughtfully crafted, often showcasing regional specialties with a contemporary twist.
High-Quality Ingredients: From hand-ground spices to organic vegetables, the quality of ingredients is paramount.
Ambiance: Elegant interiors, ambient lighting, and curated music help create a refined atmosphere.
Service Standards: Trained staff, attention to detail, and an understanding of Indian hospitality traditions elevate the service experience.
The Melbourne Scene: A Cultural Fusion on a Plate
Fine Dining Indian Restaurant Melbourne is not just a search term — it’s a promise of a gastronomic journey. The city’s multicultural environment has made it a fertile ground for Indian fine dining to flourish. From South Indian-inspired degustation menus to North Indian royal thalis reimagined with molecular gastronomy, Melbourne’s dining scene offers something for every palate.
Many of these restaurants also incorporate local produce and sustainable practices into their operations, appealing to modern diners who value both taste and responsibility.
Signature Features of Fine Dining Indian Restaurant Melbourne
Innovative Cuisine with Authentic Roots: Dishes that preserve traditional flavours while embracing modern culinary techniques set these restaurants apart. Think deconstructed butter chicken, truffle-infused biryani, or beetroot galouti kebabs on wasabi naan crisps.
Wine and Spice Pairing: Melbourne's growing wine culture complements the fine dining Indian experience. Expert sommeliers work alongside chefs to create wine pairings that balance the spice profiles of Indian dishes — a relatively new but increasingly popular trend.
Tasting Menus and Chef’s Tables: Several fine dining Indian restaurants in Melbourne offer multi-course tasting menus, allowing diners to experience a curated selection of flavours, often introduced personally by the chef.
Elegant Interiors Reflecting Indian Heritage: The decor often pays homage to India’s rich cultural past — from hand-carved wooden panels and silk tapestries to modern interpretations of Mughal architecture.
Why the Shift Toward Fine Dining?
The growing popularity of fine dining Indian restaurants is rooted in both globalisation and an increasing appreciation for culinary storytelling. As diners become more educated and adventurous, their expectations rise. Indian chefs are now stepping forward not just as cooks, but as cultural ambassadors — telling stories through food, redefining stereotypes, and creating experiences that linger far beyond the last bite.
Customer Expectations and the Dining Experience
What diners seek in a fine dining Indian restaurant today includes:
Consistent Quality: Each visit should deliver the same level of excellence.
Cultural Connection: Whether through music, art, or food, guests appreciate a genuine connection to Indian culture.
Dietary Consideration: Vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-conscious options are becoming increasingly important.
Memorable Moments: Celebrations, business dinners, or romantic evenings — every occasion is made special by thoughtful service and ambiance.

Beyond the Plate: The Future of Indian Fine Dining in Melbourne
The fine dining Indian restaurant movement in Melbourne is still evolving. Trends point toward hyper-regionalism, where chefs spotlight lesser-known Indian cuisines like Awadhi, Malvani, or Parsi fare. The use of native Australian ingredients in Indian recipes is another rising trend, as chefs explore new forms of fusion that stay respectful to both cultures.
Technology also plays a part — with QR-coded menus, augmented reality wine lists, and smart reservation systems creating a seamless and sophisticated customer journey.
Final Thoughts
The fine dining Indian restaurant is no longer a niche concept — it’s a reflection of how global audiences are embracing the depth, diversity, and sophistication of Indian cuisine. In a city like Melbourne, where culinary boundaries are constantly pushed, these establishments stand as proud representatives of India’s gastronomic excellence.
Whether you're a lifelong lover of Indian food or a curious first-timer, a visit to a fine dining Indian restaurant Melbourne promises more than a meal — it offers a journey through taste, tradition, and thoughtful innovation.

Michelin First class familyfie meal
My family is enjoying a chef’s choice “Summer Degustation” meal by Chef Eric Lee Meng Kit, in the Michelin Guide selected Skillet KL restaurant in Menara Hap Seng 3, Jalan P. Ramlee, Kōlā Lampūr (کوالا لومڤور / கோலாலம்பூர் / Kuala Lumpur), Malaysia.
Yeah, no matter where I go I still dress the same. . .
The whole dining experience was quite unique, beautifully plated dishes that you wouldn’t want to mess up, and a gastronomic ride of the freshest ingredients and flavors.
Skillet KL first opened by Chef Raymond Tham and the KARLS Group in 2015 as a modern European cuisine restaurant. The original Skillet KL was a fairly priced restaurant located in 163 Fraser Place Kuala Lumpur, and moved to Menara Hap Seng 3 in 2024 with a bolder direction and menu. Chef Eric started as the sous chef of Skillet KL.
This picture was taken circa 2024, during a medical visit to Malaysia to address my stroke.
Here is the Michelin Guide page for Skillet KL: https://guide.michelin.com/en/kuala-lumpur-region/kuala-lumpur/restaurant/skillet
Postscript:
The word “jalan” means “road” in Malay, which has the same meaning to the Filipino term “dalan” or “daanan.”
