DEWEY REDMAN, Toronto 1990
I met jazz saxophonist Dewey Redman through my friends Jane Bunnett and Larry Cramer, who had worked with Dewey on In Dew Time, Jane’s first record. He had become a semi-regular member of Jane’s band by the turn of the ‘90s and was spending a bit of time in Toronto, which I took as an opportunity to get a portrait session with Dewey in my studio – which had the advantage of being just around the corner from Jane and Larry’s house in Parkdale. I was grateful for any opportunity to do a real, sit-down portrait with jazz musicians at the time as I was (as I’ve said many times before) desperate to do the kind of work I’d admired by photographer like William Claxton and Dennis Stock, documenting the jazz scene of their time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dewey Redman was born in Fort Worth, Texas and played in his high school band with Ornette Coleman, Charles Moffett and Prince Lasha. After going to college and doing his service in the U.S. Army, he moved to San Francisco and finally ended up joining Coleman’s band in 1968, alongside Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell, with whom he would later form the band Old and New Dreams. Redman played in Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet and was a member of Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, as well as playing and recording with Paul Motian, Michael Benita, Pat Metheny, Randy Weston and many others, recording his own solo records for labels like Impulse!, Black Saint, ECM, Enja and others. While associated with the avant-garde in jazz, Dewey was also fond of evoking the growling sound of the blues and R&B tenor players he listened to and played with when he was a young man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The studio space where I photographed Dewey Redman was my bedroom in a shared loft apartment in Parkdale, with the furniture pushed to the walls to make space for my backdrop and lights. I didn’t do anything adventurous with the shoot – just a dark gray backdrop and a single soft light to one side – a “classic” setup copied from the photographers of the ‘50s and ‘60s I admired. Dewey was one of the funniest people I’d ever met, and I’d see him crack up everyone on the bandstand during rehearsals many times. I hope I’ve managed to convey something of that side of his nature in these photos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mostly shot black and white with a single roll of colour slide, and not-so-secretly hoped that one of these shots might end up on an album cover, but they remained unpublished until I revisited them on my old blog nearly ten years ago. I also shot a few rolls of Dewey playing in concert with Jane, using my Rolleiflex locked off on a tripod. I took a few of these prints with me when I visited Dewey in his apartment in Flatbush several months later, where he pointed to the Polaroid I’d taken of him and his Australian girlfriend tucked into the corner of the massive TV set in his bedroom. Dewey Redman died of liver failure in NYC in Sept. 2006.

As much as I consider myself a 2E D&D person, I tend to turn my nose up at later 2E products, particularly those with the black “generic campaign setting” borders. There is good reason for this – as the 90s progressed, TSR increasingly published a lot of crap and that didn’t really abate when Wizards of the Coast took over (looking at you, Diablo sourcebooks). However, this snobbery has resulted in me missing a number of diamonds in the rough. Reverse Dungeon (2000) is one of them.
Videogames were increasingly on the minds of RPG makers who saw them as cutting into their market (theater of the mind is always going to be wobbly up against particle effects, I guess). I already mentioned the Diablo sourcebooks. Reverse Dungeon shares a whole lot of DNA with Dungeon Keeper. Unlike the Diablo books, though, this one doesn’t suck.
Instead of playing adventurers, the players take the role of monsters defending their dungeon from intruders. There are three phases of this. The first involves a goblin settlement dealing with a number of raids from a nearby village. If the PC goblins are successful, increasingly powerful adventurers come calling and will eventually penetrate to the vault level, where players will then take the roles of the menagerie of abominations collected by an evil mage. These include some classics, like a beholder and mind flayer, some unusual ones, like a mimic and some straight awesome new ones, like a badass anti-paladin. Beyond the vault level is the mage himself – now a lich – and his undead horde, and a few more surprises for players.
I love the role reversal, especially since it doesn’t ask much more of the monsters than is required of them when they’re the enemies in a traditional dungeon. That’s all this needed to be great, and that’s all it is.
A lot of the appeal is comic artist Dennis Cramer’s illustrations. Love the clean ink work, love that mirror mimic, love that anti-paladin. The cover features an early Wayne Reynolds, too, which is a novelty!

Etruscan terracotta head of a young male 4th-3rd C. BCE. 8-1/4 inches High. Ex. old collection of Dr. Angelo R. Bergamo, N.J.
"This wide territory was divided into three grand districts — that in the centre, which may be termed Etruria Proper; that to the north, or Etruria Circumpadana; and that to the south, or Etruria Campaniana. And each of these regions was divided into Twelve States, each represented by a city...
In Etruria Circumpadana there were Twelve cities. Liv. V.33; Serv. ad Virg. Aen. X.202. Plutarch (Camillus) however, asserts that there were eighteen cities of commercial and manufacturing importance in this region of Etruria. The capital appears to have been Mantua (Virg. Aen. X.203; Serv. ad Aen. X.202), though Pliny asserts that Felsina, now Bologna, was intitled to that honour. Plin. III.20; cf. Liv. XXXVII.57. A third city was Melpum, of which we know no more than that it stood north of the Po, was renowned for its wealth, and was destroyed by the Gauls on the same day that Camillus captured Veii. Corn. Nepos, ap. Plin. III.21. Atria, or Adria, was a noble city and port of the Etruscans which gave its name to the Adriatic sea. Plin. III.20; Liv. V.33; Strabo, V.p214; Varro, Ling. Lat. V.161; Fest. v. Atrium. The notices of Justin (XX.1), and Stephanus (sub voce) are referred by Müller to the Hadria of Picenum. Etrusk. einl. 3, 4; cf. Cramer, Anc. Italy, I. p116. And Spina, at the mouth of the Po, though called a Greek city, was certainly a Pelasgic settlement, as Dionysius (I. p15, ed. Sylb.) affirms, and probably also Etruscan. See Niebuhr, I. p36; Müller, Etrusk. einl. 3, 4. Müller thinks, from Strabo's notice of it (V. p214), that Ravenna is to be regarded as an Etruscan site; and Cupra in Picenum was probably so, for its temple was built by the Etruscans and named after their Goddess, Cupra, or Juno. Strabo, V.p241. Yet Niebuhr (I. p48) refers this statement to the Tyrrhene-Pelasgi, not to the Etruscans. We know the names of no other Etruscan cities beyond the Apennines. There were Twelve chief cities also in Etruria Campaniana. Liv. V.33; Strabo, V.p242. The metropolis was Capua, built by the Etruscans 800 years before Christ, and called by them Vulturnum. Strabo, loc. cit.; V. Paterc. I.7; Liv. IV.37; Mela, II.4; Serv. ad Aen. X.145. Nola also was of Etruscan foundation. Vell. Pater. loc. cit. Dicaearchia, or Puteoli (Pausan. IV.35, VIII.7; Steph. Byz. v. Ποτίολοι), Pompeii, Herculaneum (Strabo, V.p247), and Nuceria (Philistos, cited by Müller, einl. 4, 2) were all once possessed by the Etruscans; and Marcina in the Gulf of Paestum was built by them. Strabo, V. p251. Surrentum, also, from the temple of the Etruscan Minerva on its promontory, must have belonged to that people (Stat. Sylv. II.2, 2; Steph. Byz. sub voce); and Müller (Etrusk. einl. 4, 2) would also incl Salernum. Niebuhr (I p73 et seq.), however, considers most of what is said of the Etruscan possessions south of the Tiber to refer to the Tyrrhene-Pelasgi, not to the Etruscans, properly so called."

There is also a head that blocks center stage and the action is often lost behind it. Act two is much better with no blackouts and only some heads on the bottom that are worked around well. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. There’s a lot of chatter and rustling from the audience, but the sound is otherwise excellent. Includes playbill scans.

NOTES: Really beautiful shot in an intimate space. Lots of zooms, but a good amount of wider shots too with a very limited (almost nonexistent) amount of heads. The lighting in this theater really liked my camera and I know the show almost “by heart” so I think I followed the action as well as possible. My battery died during the last song, but it starts at the very beginning with only one drop out during dialogue.

NOTES: An adorable and charming new show premiering at Berkeley Repertory. Samantha, Adam, and Savvy are fantastic in their roles, the music is gorgeous, and the sets are beautiful and clever. A very nice capture with just one quick dropout and one small head that can occasionally be seen at the bottom of the screen but never blocks the action. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums and close-ups. The sound is excellent. The show runs 1 hour and 40 minutes with no intermission. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. A

Amélie - Pre-Broadway/Los Angeles - December 4, 2016 (Preview) (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Phillipa Soo (Amélie Poulain), Savvy Crawford (Young Amélie), Adam Chanler-Berat (Nino Quincampoix), Tony Sheldon (Raymond Dufayel / Collignon), Manoel Felciano (Raphaël Poulain / Bretodeau), Alison Cimmet (Amandine Poulain / Philomene), Harriett D Foy (Suzanne), Maria-Christina Oliveras (Gina), Alyse Alan Louis (Georgette / Sylvie / Collignon's Mother), Randy Blair (Hipolito / Suicidal Tourist / Elton John), Heath Calvert (Lucien / Mysterious Man), Heath Calvert (Adrien Wells/Wallace), Paul Whitty (Fluffy / Collignon's Father), Paul Whitty (Joseph), David Andino (Blind Beggar), David Andino (Garden Gnome)
NOTES: This show is magical, Phillipa is captivating, and the entire ensemble is perfectly quirky. There have been a few changes since Berkeley that tighten up the show a bit and make it ready for Broadway. A near perfect capture with no washout, no obstruction, and just one very quick dropout. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.

NOTES: Closing show! Or “rock concert” if you ask Christy Altomare. Yeah so this is a pretty obstructed video. Everyone was really excited so people were standing up, people were moving around, and honestly I had a little trouble paying attending to my viewfinder with all of the tears streaming down my face. Like Beetlejuice I would say it’s mostly like highlights, but all of the things that happen in the center part of the stage are captured really well and the video is DEFINITELY Christy centric. “Journey to the Past” is complete and gorgeous and you will cry. First act starts around when Anya meets Dmitry and the second act starts during “Crossing A Bridge.”

NOTES: Great capture of this wonderful touring company with no obstructions except for a head leaning into the frame for a second or two in Act One. Filmed with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups, and there’s only a couple instances of wandering after applause (limited to early in Act One) and no major dropouts.

NOTES: This first attempt at a sequel to Annie, Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge, opened at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in December 1989 to universally disastrous reviews.
Extensive reworking of the script and score proved futile, and the project ended before officially reaching Broadway; newly surfaced video was filmed from the balcony. Shot between heads, and the balcony railing is visible, but not too bad-you still get a good feel for the show. Recorded at the second night performance. Some generational loss. B

Longitudinalwaveme Reviews Old Comics, Part 4
We end our look at Bronze Age comics with the Flash #308 (1981), another issue with two stories.
The first story, entitled “The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful”, is the actual Flash story. It was written by Carey Bates, drawn by Carmine Infantino and Dennis Jensen, inked by Gene D’Angelo, and lettered by Todd Klein.
The story begins with a flashback (pun not intended) of Barry’s childhood in Fallville, where he, dressed up as the Jay Garrick Flash, plays superhero, with Daphne Dean serving as his damsel in distress. After he “rescues” her, she kisses him, much to little Barry’s dismay. The idea of little Barry pretending to be Jay Garrick is insanely adorable.
The flashback is then revealed to have also been a dream of Daphne’s. She’s come to Central City to visit Barry Allen, much to the surprise of Barry’s coworkers. The two get lunch together, reminisce about their past together, and talk about their current problems. Barry Allen’s wife Iris had died a few years previously, while Daphne herself is being stalked by Lance Basilla...also a native of Fallville! Lance was the neighborhood bully who has since become a criminal, but he always had a crush on Daphne. She’s understandably concerned to be getting notes from him, especially since he’s recently been paroled from prison.
Barry is working on finding Lance when Daphne calls him to tell him that some sort of monster is outside of her room. Barry promptly changes into the Flash to save his childhood crush, gets briefly entangled with some elevator cables, and manages to rescue Daphne from death in said crashing elevator. There’s no sign of anything around her hotel room, though.
Meanwhile, we see that Lance is a participant in a sleep research project. He’s dreaming, but his brainwaves are very strange. We then cut to his dream, of a time when he, as a child, dressed up as a mummy to frighten Barry and Daphne during a rainstorm...only to get struck by lightning!
Back with Barry and Daphne, Barry notes to himself that the mummy that Daphne saw looks a lot like Lance did when he dressed up as a mummy, then asks Daphne to accompany him on a tour around Central City. She accepts, they have a cute conversation, and then it starts to rain. And then they get attacked by the mummy, who blasts Barry and then tells Daphne it’s in love with her, using lines from Lance’s notes.
Bizarrely, this corresponds exactly with the dream Lance is having. Barry changes into the Flash and he and the mummy get into a fight. Meanwhile, the scientists realize that what’s happening in the dream is also happening in real life: Lance has the power of astral projection! After a few more panels of fighting, Barry manages to get the mummy to get struck by lightning, and it dissipates as Lance wakes up and runs off.
Luckily, this weird experience lead Lance to finally give up on winning over Daphne, and Barry and Daphne walk off into the sunset together.
The Flash story was very strange. Writer Carey Bates really enjoyed stories about the paranormal, and this issue was another example of it. However, the relationship between Barry and Daphne was handled very well, and I enjoyed the flashbacks to Barry’s childhood...especially seeing him dressed up as Jay.
The other issue in the story, “Dawn of the Sixth Sun”, was written by Martin Pasko, drawn by Keith Giffen, inked by Larry Mahlstedt, colored by Gene D’Angelo, and lettered by Ben Oda.
It’s a short back-up story, starring Dr. Fate, who has to rescue his wife, Inza Cramer, and defeat a demon called Malferrazae, who wants to destroy California. He succeeds, but at the expense of his wife, who disappears. I don’t really know enough about Dr. Fate to comment too much on the story, especially since what little I’ve read of him isn’t to my tastes. But it is at least an interesting premise with good visuals.
The issue ends with a letter column full of praise for Flash #202-203, the issues in which the Top possessed Barry Allen’s father and teamed up with his sweetheart, the Golden Glider, in order to take Barry’s body instead. @gorogues will probably be interested and pleased to learn that most of the readers at the time seemed to like both Golden Glider and the Top.
