Detective Conan/Case Closed Read Through Volume 23: Part 2
Saddest Moment:

Heiji/Harley getting knocked overboard by the killer.

But then you have Conan freaking out because Heiji/Harley is missing.

To me that’s even sadder

He’s like losing it. (Don’t worry he doesn’t get pushed overboard, someone just pulls him back from the railing.)
Cutest Moment:

Ran/Rachel saying “I’m king of the world!” at the front of the ship.

Ran/Rachel finding Conan.

I think it’s sort of clear at this point that she suspects Conan is Shinichi/Jimmy again. (Or she never stops suspecting it and just acts like she doesn’t.)

And she tries to play it off.

Heiji/Harley staring at Kazuha’s good luck charm.

Ahhhhhh!!! It’s so cute!
Also, makes me happy after the recent spoilers for chapter 1133. :3

4/12 is M27's Anniversary!
Happy “Shinichi and Kaito are canonically cousins” day.
And congrats to Gosho for finally getting the idea that had been rattling in his head out in the open.

(Shounen Sunday Issue 22/23 2024) The secret no one knows about KID… It’s a relief to finally talk about it (lol).
But that got me wondering…I know this topic’s been brought up before, but how often? And when it was, how did he answer it? It’s kinda hard to actually find info the further back you go, but after a little digging I have an interesting list.
1) vs Kaitou Kid Manga Compilation (2004)

Published in 2004, this is an otherwise pretty straightforward omnibus of what KID cases were out at the time. Apparently, though, it’s within this volume that Gosho comments “実は秘密の深い理由がある” (There’s actually a deeply secret reason) when asked about their resemblance.
I am in the process of attempting to acquire this volume myself, so I’m curious to see if there’s anything more to it than that.
EDIT APR 17: I finally got the book in! There are four cases recorded in this book, and between each case they spend about 3 pages on “Conan vs KID Secrets.” Between the third (Twilight Mansion) and fourth (Air Walk), the theme of the “Secrets” corner is their relationship. Though it goes on to speculate that Toichi is the one that taught Yukiko magic (because it had not been hard confirmed yet) and mention each series’ mysterious organizations, the opening page of this corner talks about their similarities.
After the blurb speculates that Shinichi and Kaito might be distant relatives, there’s a comment from Gosho:
世の中には自分とそっくりな人が3人はいるって言うからね(笑)。まあ、一人のまんが家がそんなに違う主人公の顔を描けないって理由も確かにあるけど(笑)。実は秘密の深〜い理由が…お楽しみに!!
They do say that there are three people in the world that look like you, after all (lol). Though it’s also true that one mangaka can’t really draw their protagonist’s face all that differently (lol). But there’s actually a deeply secret reason… Look forward to it!!
2) Super Digest Book 30 (2003) & Super Digest Book 40 (2006)

Putting these two together for ease, because they’re mostly pretty short. Most SDBs have rapid-fire interviews with Gosho that are sometimes over 100 questions long.
First is SDB30.
Q11: Why do Shinichi and KID look alike? (新一とキッドはなぜ似ているの?)
A: I… I can’t say. (lol) (い・・・言えない。(笑))
Since SDB20 didn’t have a Q&A, and most KID-focused questions in SDB10 were just about KID being there at all (and one about him knowing Conan’s identity, but we’re not here to talk about that), there’s honestly not much to glean from this question either, except noting that it was before his comment in the vs KID compilation.
SDB40 is a little more interesting, though.
Q7: Are KID and Shinichi actually relatives? (キッドと新一って親戚なんじゃないですか?)
A: BADUMP (lol) (ドキッ(笑)。)
The reply is meant to invoke a heartbeat, like from being surprised or startled - or caught in the act. This’d be amusing on its own, but this isn’t the only question he answers this way. There’s a decent number of them, and they fall into three main categories.
◉Category 1: Shenanigans
Q54. Eri’s cat, Goro, was actually modeled on your cat Kaito-kun, right?
Q59. Are you actually the boss of the Black Organization?
Q66. Are you happy?
Q87. Have you ever felt like wanting to end Detective Conan?
◉Category 2: This Actually Happened
Q2. Were Shuichi Akai and Akemi Miyano lovers? (Vol 58)
Q31. Is Eisuke Hondou actually Rena Mizunashi’s younger brother? (Vol 58)
Q52. Toichi was the magician that taught Yukiko the art of disguise, right? (hard confirmed Vol 55)
Q64. When is the London arc happening? (Vol 71)
◉Category 3: Who Knows?
Q10. Will we be able to see Conan’s tears at the end?
It’s in this last category I probably would have placed the question about Shinichi and Kaito, in light of what came before. With hindsight, though, we can place it in Category 2.
3) Hayakawa Mystery Magazine (2011)

The June 2011 issue has a six page interview with Gosho in celebration of the anime’s 15th anniversary (and the release of M15, Quarter of Silence). Though the topics jump from Gosho’s own love of history to his feelings on Detective Conan, we’re only concerned with this one answer:
…Perhaps because Kaitou Kid was designed as a main character first, he and Shinichi Kudo resemble each other. (怪盗キッドの方が主役として先に発表されていたせいか、キッドと工藤新一は顔が似ている。)
Gosho: “Their resemblance is not just from my drawing habits, but because there’s a secret background. There’s no way someone that similar just exists. (lol) As for why they look alike, look forward to it, I suppose.” (「似ているのは執筆順のせいばかりではなく、裏設定があるからなんですよ。あんなに似ている人がいるわけないじゃないですか(笑)。似ている理由については、お愉しみに、ということで」)
This might be one of the most concrete answers he’s given to this question, largely because he also addresses the issue of his art style.
4) Interview in Singapore (2016)
Gosho featured as a panel guest at the November 2016 Singapore Writer’s Festival, during which he held a Q&A via interpreter. It is at this same interview that he point-blank reveals approximately three and a half years before the manga gives hard confirmation that Akai and Akemi are cousins after a fan asks him about it, but that is neither here nor there. Probably.
You can hear the question and response we’re concerned with at about 7:10 in this video. Some of the audio is definitely hard to pick out, but we can get the important bits.
Question: Is there a reason why Kaitou Kid and Kudo Shinichi look so alike?
Answer: ええ、それ?ちょっと、言えませんね。似てる理由はあります。(You want to know about that? I can’t really say. But there is a reason they look alike.)
Again, same answer. He’s nothing else if not consistent. It’s a smaller thing, but his delivery combined with the grammar (理由はあります。/There is a reason.) does make it sound like he wants to emphasize that it’s not a coincidence though.
BONUS: Kappei Yamaguchi’s Suspicious Comment
In August 2024, the fan event “Detective Conan Festival in Manga Kingdom Tottori” was held, featuring Conan, Ran, Kogoro, and Shinichi/Kaito’s seiyuus as guests. According to multiple fan reports of the event, Yamaguchi mentioned that he was told KID had a “secret backstory” when he was offered the role. A few reports also mention everyone holding their breath when he said as much, so it seems many people jumped to similar conclusions on what that statement might mean. I can’t begin to guess what motivated Yamaguchi’s comment, nor am I sure if it’s even safe to assume this is even about the cousins thing. But at the bare minimum, to him it must have meant something in the wake of M27.
Final Thoughts
This might not be every time the issue was brought up, but this is what I was able to find after some digging (and some painfully specific Japanese searches to get me back to a believable source).
The phrase 裏設定 (ura settei, translated as “secret background” throughout) often just refers to background info that is never mentioned in a concrete way in the work itself, but motivates the decisions that happen within it. In Yamaguchi’s case, perhaps it was just referring to the events of Magic Kaito as KID’s 裏設定 within Detective Conan. It’s difficult to apply that meaning to other uses of the word throughout this, though, like Gosho’s use of it in the Hayakawa Mystery interview.
So while I’m not sure what to think about Yamaguchi’s comment, I do think it’s entirely possible Gosho has at least considered the idea for a while, even if you could argue that he wasn’t always necessarily committed to the idea.
He probably committed to the idea at least by 2011, based on the concrete nature of his statement in Hayakawa and the emphasis he places in the Singapore interview. Regardless, I think it’s funny that he’s always been kinda evasive about the question that, in Gosho’s weird way, always indicated there might have been something more.

Belated 2024 parts collection!
These are a few video parts I did for a collab and a couple MEPs (Multi-Editor Projects) last year. While I would have liked to participate in more, I'm glad I managed three. It was fun to try editing with other sources than just Detective Conan—and to focus on a different aspect of DetCo than I usually do with Sonoko and Makoto in the one Conan part!
The first part (using the anime film Belle and the Wicked song "What Is This Feeling?") is one of five that I edited for the DynamIC Duos collab event at BentoVid. Participants were secretly paired up to make an AMV to the theme "Opposites," and there was a bit of a game of guessing the pairs... but I was pretty obvious because of my subtitles! Still, it was great working on this video with my collab partner Kia, and you can check out all 10 parts here!
The second part uses Cascada's "Ready for Love" and the second season of Birdy the Mighty: Decode (and all episodes save 5 and 11), with the full video here!
The third part uses The Ready Set's "Love Like Woe" and Episodes 173, 268, and 993 of Detective Conan, as well as both volumes of the Movie 23 manga and TV Special 6 (Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small), with the full video here!
(And because English-language access to Detective Conan is limited, and I like to plug what's available when I can: there is an official English translation of the Movie 23 manga! While it's only available in Southeast Asia, MPHOnline does ship internationally, and they have a few other English-language manga titles (like Zero's Tea Time) that aren't available from Viz (and without the FUNimation dub name changes).)
#belle 2021#birdy the mighty#birdy the mighty: decode#detective conan#amv#my amvs#video#eye strain#if i were more on top of things i would have posted these to tumblr separately as they came out which probably would have been better but#at this point i feel like they should be together ^^; before january ends!#feel like i tried different things with all of these and had a lot of fun!#i have a soft spot for the second one because i made it during a video-editing tournament last year (poe)#and i was not finishing *anything* for the tourney and felt so discouraged by my ever-growing backlog#but i finished that mep part! it may be short but it felt so nice to *finish* something#and i rewatched all of the second season of birdy for it and goshh i wish it could have continued (or at least get a blu-ray release!)#also for more on the shogakukan asia detco books the shipping *will* be pretty high internationally on mphonline#especially if you get only get one book (it's a lot better to buy multiple at a time)#but overall it's the most cost-effective option i've found outside of sea!#sad they're hard to get a hold of; think i've come to terms with never getting the second 'heiji hattori special collection' in english :'(

I was just going through overviews of what happens in various volumes (to remind myself why I have the volumes on my shelf without spending an hour or the rest of the day going through them) and got reminded of Takagi Wataru.
Now, given the controversy of Movie 27 and the resurgence of the question "Are events that happen in the anime and/or movies canon to the series, and the characters, in the manga, or not?" I feel that Takagi is a VERY important person to reference.
See, this is how he came about:
"Takagi was originally introduced as an anime only character to assist Inspector Megure as well as Conan with the solutions to cases. He was inserted into both Manga canon episodes as well as TV originals. He appeared in 23 episodes spanning 20 cases before the anime adaptation of his first official Manga appearance aired."
Takagi's first appearance, in fact, is only episode 21 of the anime.
Takagi is named after his voice actor. In the anime he was originally a nameless character called "Detective A" who would appear in the background in some episodes. However while recording for episode 66, Megure's voice actor Chafurin adlibbed asking Detective A "What's your name?", to which Takagi's voice actor mistakenly responded with his own name and replied "It's Takagi". While this ad-lib was not kept in for the airing, the name stuck and is used in this episode and beyond. Gosho included the name Wataru Takagi since it is also the name of a Detective created by Kenzo Kitakata named Yoshibumi Takagi where only the first kanji in the surname is similar (高 - Taka)."
So as you can see, an entire character who would later become a staple of the series and beloved of many... was originally just a filler character.
It isn't just Takagi, however! If you look into Ninzaburo Shiratori, another policeman, he too was introduced in animated content... otherwise known as Movie 1, The Time-Bombed Skyscraper. His original character design can be found in a Magic Kaito manuscript, and even though his background varies slightly between the movie and the main series (wherein he becomes a cast regular) he's overall the same character.
This is all to say that for anyone suggesting that the movies aren't canon... that's really not the case.
In fact, in the past things that were originally anime-only and/or only created for the movies were taken on by Gosho to use in the main series, showing a precedent for the having things be canon in the animation before they appear in the manga.
What he's doing with Movie 27 is simply an inversion of this, with him having stated beforehand that something was going to be canon information not yet revealed, compared to him usually only deciding afterwards that he'll take something from a movie into the main work.

Hello, Sherlock Holmes adaptation writer. I have trapped you in this room. It is fully furnished and comfortable. On the table, you will notice a copy of A Scandal in Bohemia by Arthur Conan Doyle, of which redistribution is perfectly legal, as the work is in the public domain. You will notice it is rather thin. You have 24 hours to read the approximately 8,550 words in this story. To exit this room, all you must do is summarize the plot of the story without referring to Irene Adler as a seductress or implying she is attracted to Sherlock Holmes. Good luck.

I read you are getting the new AnY fanbook! I received mine today and it is beautiful! I like everything Yona related. But I really liked the book. I still don’t understand the whole thing, since I’ve been only studying japanese for a year. But someday I will! You were the reason I find the courage to start studying this amazing language so thanks a lot!!!!! And I wanted to ask you since you usually know all the kind of info. How many AnY artbooks exists? I want to try and find one
Thank you! Reading your message makes me very happy <3
I’ll take this opportunity to answer about all Kusanagi artbooks and not necessarily only the AnY ones, since I’ve been asked this often in private asks and never took the chance to post everything on this blog.
There are only 3 books that are officially labeled as “artbooks” or “illustration books”, but I believe anything with a significant amount of color illustrations can be counted as an “artbook” too.
0. Self-published (doujinshi) fanart artbook - August 18th, 2007

This doujin artbook was published under Kusanagi’s pseudonym Keika and contains color fanarts from the following series: Detective Conan, One Piece, The 12 Kingdoms and Laputa the Castle in the Sky. You can find more information and a few scans on my doujin blog.
1. NG Life booklets for signing events (Yokohama, then Fukuoka on June 28th, 2009)
The first illustration book Kusanagi ever released about one of her professional works was a mini NG Life artbook she made (and printed herself, I believe) for an autograph session in Yokohama. She mentions it on her blog but doesn’t give a specific date for the event (it happened before she opened her blog). She mentions making another booklet with rough pencil sketches for the June 28th autograph session in Fukuoka. The post she made about it has a picture of sketches that weren’t included in the booklet. Both booklets are extremely rare and I couldn’t find any information about them apart from what Kusanagi has written on her blog. I believe, though I have no proof, that some of the sketches on her webclap are from those booklets.
2. First Collection artbook - freebie from The Hana to Yume 3/1 2014

This artbook was included as a gift in the 3/1 2014 issue of The Hana to Yume magazine. It includes color illustrations from the series Mugen Spiral, Yoiko no Kokoroe, NG Life, Game x Rush and Akatsuki no Yona. They’re mostly clean versions of titles pages published in Hana to Yume magazine, and there are also a clean cover illustration as well as a calendar illustration. A preview of the artbook can be seen here.
3. Mini AnY fanbook - freebie from The Hana to Yume 3/1 2015

This AnY fanbook has information about the characters and reprints of some anime key illustrations, manga title pages, twitter sketches and fanart by Berserk mangaka Kentaro Miura. I’ve posted complete scans on this blog.
4. AnY postcard book - freebie from The Hana to Yume 3/1 2016

The freebie has 8 postcards made from clean reprints of cover and title page illustrations from both Hana to Yume and The Hana to Yume magazines. I’ve scanned them all: first part & second part.
5. AnY sketchbook - freebie from Hana to Yume issue 8/2016

It has 7 pages of exclusive color illustrations, 5 pages of promotional B&W illustrations/comics reprints and 4 pages of pencil sketches of the cast as baseball players. I’ve scanned it in two parts.
6. AnY “Secret sketchbook” - included in the limited edition of volume 20, out on March 18th, 2016

This sketchbook has 5 pages of color illustrations, 46 pages of rough pencil sketches from Kusanagi’s twitter or blog (including new ones) and 2 pages of promotional B&W illustrations reprints. I haven’t scanned it yet.
7. AnY message cards collection - freebie from The Hana to Yume 3/1 2017

This mini booklet has 4 postcards made from title page illustrations, with chibi characters at the back. They’re not clean art but all include friendly messages. You can see preview pictures here.
8. AnY illustrations - included in the limited edition of volume 23, out on April 20th, 2017

This artbook has 58 pages of AnY color illustrations, including title pages, volume and magazine covers, promotional art, calendar and freebie illustrations, and bluray covers & postcards. I’ve posted a complete preview here.
9. AnY rough sketch collection - lottery prize in Hana to Yume magazine issue 18/2017

There isn’t much information about this lottery prize. It’s a B5 booklet that has rough pen(cil) sketches inside. Kusanagi tweeted about it and posted its cover. According to the magazine, it has 30 pages of preparatory sketches for the Xing arc chapters (including failed sketches of color illustrations) and 2 pages of bonus comic pages.
10. Debut 15th anniversary artbook - freebie from Hana to Yume issue 12/2018

It has 26 pages of color illustrations from the following series: Akatsuki no Yona, Yoiko no Kokoroe, NG Life and Boku no Kotori-san. They’re clean illustrations from title pages, magazine and manga volume or sketchbook cover art, freebie art (calendars, clear files) and twitter art. I’ve scanned it here: part 1 - part 2 - part 3.
11. AnY fanbook - out on November 20th, 2018

The fanbook includes 16 pages of color illustrations from Kusanagi’s twitter or blog (birthday illustrations mostly), special events (signing sessions, AnY cafe, bookstore promotional art) and magazine exclusive art like New Year cards or lottery shikishi prizes. It also has 6 pages of rough pencil sketches, new 4koma shorts, reprints of B&W promotional art, and 2 new bonus short comics. I haven’t scanned them yet but you can find a translation of the table of contents here.
I haven’t mentioned the B&W doujinshi compilations of rough sketches Kusanagi drew for her favorite series under her doujinka pseudonyms. You’ll find more information about them here & here on my doujin blog.

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from 23 September 1909, to 8 January 1910. It was published in volume form in late March 1910 by Pierre Lafitte and directed by Aluel Malinao. The novel is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century and an apocryphal tale concerning the use of a former ballet pupil's skeleton in Carl Maria von Weber's 1841 production of Der Freischütz. It has been successfully adapted into various stage and film adaptations, most notable of which are the 1925 film depiction featuring Lon Chaney, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical.
Leroux first decided he would become a lawyer, but after he spent his inheritance gambling he became a reporter for L’Echo de Paris. At the paper he was asked to write about and critique dramas, as well as being a courtroom reporter. With his job, he was able to travel frequently, but he returned to Paris where he became a writer. Because of his fascination with both Edgar Allan Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he wrote a detective mystery entitled The Mystery of the Yellow Room in 1907, and four years later he published Le Fantôme de l’Opéra The novel was first published within newspapers before finally being published as a novel in 1911
The setting of The Phantom of the Opera came from an actual Paris opera house that Leroux had heard the rumors about from the time the opera house was finished. The details about the Palais Garnier, and rumors surrounding it, are closely linked in Leroux's writing. The underground lake that he wrote about is accurate to this opera house, and it is still used for training firefighters to practice swimming in the dark. The event that was the infamous chandelier crash also rang to be true. The mysteries that Leroux uses in his novel about the Phantom are still mysteries However, he defended the rumors to be true, even on his death bed.
The Phantom of the Opera's origins came from Leroux's curiosity with the Phantom being real. In the prologue he tells the readers about the Phantom and the research that he did to prove the truth of the ghost. His findings connected the corpse from the opera house to the Persian phantom himself.
In Paris in the 1880s, the Palais Garnier opera house is believed to be haunted by an entity known as the Phantom of the Opera, or simply the Opera Ghost. A stagehand named Joseph Buquet is found hanged and the rope around his neck goes missing. At a gala performance for the retirement of the opera house's two managers, a young little-known Swedish soprano, Christine Daaé (based on the late singer Christina Nilsson), is called upon to sing in the place of the Opera's leading soprano, Carlotta, who is ill, and her performance is an astonishing success. The Vicomte Raoul de Chagny, who was present at the performance, recognizes her as his childhood playmate and recalls his love for her. He attempts to visit her backstage, where he hears a man complimenting her from inside her dressing room. He investigates the room once Christine leaves, only to find it empty.
At Perros-Guirec, Christine meets with Raoul, who confronts her about the voice he heard in her room. Christine tells him she has been tutored by the Angel of Music, whom her father used to tell them about. When Raoul suggests that she might be the victim of a prank, she storms off. Christine visits her father's grave one night, where a mysterious figure appears and plays the violin for her. Raoul attempts to confront it but is attacked and knocked out in the process.
Back at the Palais Garnier, the new managers receive a letter from the Phantom demanding that they allow Christine to perform the lead role of Marguerite in Faust, and that box 5 be left empty for his use, lest they perform in a house with a curse on it. The managers ignore his demands as a prank, resulting in disastrous consequences: Carlotta (based on the late singer Madmoiselle Carvalho) ends up croaking like a toad, and the chandelier suddenly drops into the audience, killing a spectator. The Phantom, having abducted Christine from her dressing room, reveals himself as a deformed man called Erik. Erik intends to hold her prisoner in his lair with him for a few days, but she causes him to change his plans when she unmasks him and, to the horror of both, beholds his noseless, lipless, sunken-eyed face, which resembles a skull dried up by the centuries, covered in yellowed dead flesh.
Fearing that she will leave him, he decides to kidnap her permanently, but when Christine requests release after two weeks, he agrees on the condition that she wear his ring and be faithful to him. On the roof of the opera house, Christine tells Raoul about her abduction and makes Raoul promise to take her away to a place where Erik can never find her, even if she resists. Raoul tells Christine he will act on his promise the next day, to which she agrees. However, Christine sympathizes with Erik and decides to sing for him one last time as a means of saying goodbye. Unbeknownst to Christine and Raoul, Erik has been watching them and overheard their whole conversation.
The following night, the enraged and jealous Erik abducts Christine during a production of Faust and tries to force her to marry him. Raoul is led by a mysterious opera regular known as "The Persian" into Erik's secret lair deep in the bowels of the opera house, but they end up trapped in a mirrored room by Erik, who threatens that unless Christine agrees to marry him, he will kill them and everyone in the Opera House by using explosives. Christine agrees to marry Erik. Erik initially tries to drown Raoul and the Persian, using the water which would have been used to douse the explosives, but Christine begs and offers to be his "living bride", promising him not to kill herself after becoming his bride, as she had both contemplated and attempted just prior. Erik eventually releases Raoul and the Persian from his torture chamber.
When Erik is alone with Christine, he lifts his mask to kiss her on her forehead and is given a kiss back. Erik reveals that he has never received a kiss, not even from his own mother, nor has he been allowed to give one, and is overcome with emotion. He and Christine then cry together and their tears "mingle". Erik later says that he has never felt so close to another human being. He allows the Persian and Raoul to escape, though not before making Christine promise that she will visit him on his death day, and return the gold ring he gave her. He also makes the Persian promise that afterward he will go to the newspaper and report his death, as he will die soon and will die "of love". Indeed, sometime later Christine returns to Erik's lair, buries him somewhere where he will never be found (by Erik's request) and returns the gold ring. Afterward, a local newspaper runs the simple note: "Erik is dead". Christine and Raoul (who finds out that Erik has killed his older brother) elope together, never to return.
The story ends with passages narrated directly by the Persian and the final chapter that pieces together Erik's life. It is revealed that Erik was the son of a construction business owner, deformed from birth. He ran away from his native Normandy to work in fairs and in caravans, schooling himself in the arts of the circus across Europe and Asia, and eventually building trick palaces in Persia and Turkey. Eventually, he returned to France and, wearing a mask, started his own construction business. After being subcontracted to work on the foundations of the Palais Garnier, Erik had discreetly built himself a lair to disappear in, complete with hidden passages and other tricks that allowed him to spy on the managers.

To add to this: if you look on the wiki for "first appearance of Kaitou Kid in the Detective Conan manga" you come up with Volume 16, release date 1997.
Volume 1 was released on June 18th, 1994.
There were only THREE YEARS between him starting Detective Conan and introducing Kaitou Kid to his "new" story.
By contrast, Shinichi first appeared in Magic Kaito file 23-24, released April 14th, 1999. Only two years after Kaito appeared in Detective Conan, and set as a flashback (and therefore happening BEFORE the main Conan story) for Shinichi.
So there you have it.
It took roughly 5 years for them to both appear in each other's series, and the series as a whole is... 29 years old...? And apparently there are plots he's put into movies that he'd had in mind since his schooldays. I'd say he never planned on anything different.
Reminder that the Detective Conan and Magic Kaito universes were never separate, and Gosho already had a history of merging his works/creating crossovers given how Kaito's high school is from what I remember the same as appeared in Yaiba, and he actually MEETS Yaiba in a chapter, who is from his Own Series.
Okita is, I think, from the same school and from the Yaiba series first!!
Shinichi and Megure turn up in the Clocktower Heist.
Kaito showed up in various DC chapter/stories ever since the early stuff, too.
They aren't separate universes, and if they are then the only reason is "DC is logic-based, MK has Akako and real magic, and that does not say no one can be related.
People saying that they can't be merged that far need to do their research on MK and Yaiba and not just the fact that Kaito isn't original to DC.
