I'm taking a break from Tumblr and other social media ....

Just kidding 😄 I'm not posting any new paintings but only for 1 week. I'm going on a vacation in Taiwan and enjoy our 1 year wedding anniversary there and will come back next Saturday 😌😌 This is the trip we've been planning for half a year and I'm very excited 🥳 (Is anyone here Taiwanese??)

Two days left before 2025 and here I am in Ushuaia, at the end of the world, almost one year after arriving in Argentina. What a year of living here and traveling !

Soon we will begin to do up, aiming Canada, but before that we will enjoy the last days on the Tierra del Fuego !

Today not enjoying so much, been in bed for 2 days because of a post christmas flue... but I managed to get a bit out of bed for 2 hours to to a little walking tour of the city. Its been super grey and cloudy but it was super mystical I loved it.

Also managed to keep the travel diary on and try my new - not the worst but not quite great neither - oil pastels !

commonplace journal, 06.08 FRI

normally i wouldn’t post big sections of this journal, because usually it doesnt have so much content. however today i needed quick notes in class, and i am a slow, SLOW, typer. (learning to touch-type and type quickly never really stuck with me…)

Anyways!! today was really good content-wise, though i did have to leave early because my computer was about to go flat. the unfortunate circumstances of forgetting my charger. However, i do want to talk about what i did cover, becasue it was interesting!

today’s tut covered greek colonisation, which was the expansion of greece. though from lecture; as it does differ from imperial colonialism, it is not innocent (this pertains to how some colonies were founded and maintained through violence)

activity #1: independent reading task (with class discussion)

prophetic colonisation - through the oracle of delphi and declartion of apollo, there was reason to form colonies. though, there was also overpopulation and war to account for in colonisation. a specific war that was made mention of in the reading was a war between Chakis and Eretria (and how different ancient historians attributed different allies, and the wars that surrounded when this war occurred).

activity #2: small group reading: cyrene

so as a group, the Decree of Cyrene was read. what we found was that the justification for founding the colony was under religious reasoning (declaration from Apollo, and they would honour apollo at a sanctuary in cyrene). an interesting few points was that if there was no success at cyrene, the travellers were to return to Thera (the colonisers) within 5 years. refusual to return would be seen as rebellion, and order the death of the rebel (and the wording went on to suggest those related to the rebel? though i’m not to sure on that). there was also the notion of equality to an extent — any who arrived at any time, even after the original settlers, were equal in their existance. though the extent of this is questionable.

Day 18 of my Daily Art Release, this time it’s the total vibe, despite his God of Death status, and lover of apples, Ryuk.

I agree with Ryuk that apples are tasty, although I don’t eat them that often. I don’t have much to say today but it’s more than yesterday lol

Negatives - I messed up the face a bit, but i guess that’s to be expected as i’ve never done anyone with a head like Ryuk before. The hand holding the apple looks a little weird, and the shadings not great. If you look at the ref image you’ll see I made it way too big, which probably would have been fine if i was on a computer where I could change the canvas size, but oh well.

Positives - I like the face. And the eyes. I think the earring was good. As well as the uhh. patch thing around his shoulders and lower neck.

Random BS

Listened to Tabun and Yoru ni Kakeru (Probably and Racing through the Night) today

Ryuk sorta reminds me of a Spren. Or a Stand, but Stands remind me of Spren. But not much. Ryuk does remind me of a Spren tho.

Light would 100% be a Skybreaker. And would probably be able to wield Nightblood.

And the Shinigami realm could be Shadesmar.

spoon I just want to say thank you so much for your sketch pages and doodles. for someone like me who sometimes struggles with artist self esteem, sometimes it's hard to remember that art doesn't have to be perfect. I think that's true no matter your skill (bc tbh my sketches are pond scum compared to yours). sometimes art can be art because you want to make it, not to make a flawless final product. sometimes I want to sketch just to sketch, and that's ok. thanks for reminding me of that.

oh my goodness, hi!!! thank you so, so much for taking the time to write this ;-; i struggle so much between keeping my work more palatable while acknowledging that my scribbly sketches are integral to my artist identity, so this truly means so much to me🥺😭😭💖💖💖

sketchbooks to me is the place where i can truly express myself, however i want, like a diary with a code only i understand. i feel like many artists don’t realise how truly liberating it is to pour out themselves somewhere without judgement or pressures for perfection from the outside world.

i promise you, your art is better than you think! and the art you think looks like “pond scum” now, you will look back years later with fascination and pride. whatever art you have made, no matter how it looks, however incomplete, messy, rough-it is something that is yours. then and now, there is so much value in your art, and yourself by extension, no matter what stage you are at.

i am so happy, proud, and deeply honoured that my silly scribbles could bring you to such a beautiful realisation about art. i’m wishing you all the best (and all the fun) in your art journey! take care of yourself and thank you so much again♥️♥️♥️
