Study Results (1/??)

I'll post some of the results now! Firstly, I'll write about how I processed the data for those interested in details. (Please inform me if you see anything wrong or want to suggest a different method. I'm just an average person with an undergrad degree...)

If you just want to see the analysis, skip the data cleaning and test assumptions part! As a disclaimer, I don't know if this is all for now or if I can bring myself to work more on it soon 😭

Data Cleaning

I realized that some of you guys didn't do the test and wrote the numbers by yourself 😊 And it took me hours to clean the data

As expected, there were some typos, and I corrected them before deciding which participants to exclude. For instance, some wrote 29/20, and since the sum of the subfactor scores is equal to your main factor score, I was able to confirm that it should be 19/20 by doing main_factor_score—other_subfactors = target_subfactor.

After dealing with typos, all participants who entered random values like 0000 and values that didn't align with the main factor scores were excluded.

In the end, the sample size was reduced from ~2600 to 1929.

Test Assumptions

The normality and homogeneity of variance were checked. Most of them fulfilled the homogeneity of variance(Levene's Test), but normality was problematic. I assessed normality based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov(KS), kurtosis, skewness, and Q-Q plot. There were some outliers, but most of them were a natural part of the data, so I didn't change anything about them. Although KS values were lower than .05 , I assumed normality if kurtosis and skewness seemed average (-2 to +2 for kurtosis, -1 to +1 for skewness). For others, I tried trimming, LOG, SQRT, Z, and LN transformations, but still couldn't normalize... Winsorizing would probably work, but there are too many participants(yes, I'm lazy). So, I'm gonna be relatively liberal about normality.

Results

Please note that all of them have small effect sizes (0.2 Cohen's d or 0.1 η2). So regardless of the p values, the actual association between your personality based on the big five and character choices in lads might be small in degree. Also, this is an observational study, which means you shouldn't try to infer a causation or a strict relation (so use it just for your enjoyment, not for fandom chaos~). But I'll put my personal comment under them because I need to enjoy myself too lol

Also, I realised that some of those are changing or disappearing when I compare poc(people of color) and non-poc within themselves. Therefore, the effects might be moderated/mediated by cultural differences as well.

===Trust====

Sylus mains had the lowest mean score in terms of trust(M=11.2, SD=3.42). Yet, they significantly differed only from Xavier mains who had the highest mean(M=12.1, SD=3.28).

Personal comment: I don't know what to make of it. But let me put those here as well.

==Conscientiousness and Agreeableness==

I'll write this together because I have a theory about these results.

Caleb mains' scores were the lowest in terms of conscientiousness (M=74.3, SD=13.7) and agreeableness(M=84.4, SD=13.8). For conscientiousness, they significantly differed from Zayne and Sylus mains. And for agreeableness, they significantly differed from Zayne and Xavier mains. [Agreeableness showed unequal variances, so I used Kruskall-Wallis test]

Personal comment: Honestly, I'm surprised. (Caleb and his girlies not beating red flag/villain allegations)

If anything, I would expect Sylus mains to have lower agreeableness and conscientiousness (first impressions don't disappear).

Then I thought, what if it's related to Caleb being MC's adopted brother? Listen before shooting me. To feel at ease with this setting, you should have higher (but healthy) dissociative tendencies to detach yourself from its real-life associations. And guess what— low agreeableness and low conscientiousness are related to high disassociation [refer to:https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1130527417300373]. Secondly, having a lower need to conform(related to agreeableness and conscientiousness) with others might be making it easier for some people to choose Caleb as their main love interest.

(But as I said, these results are liable to change. For instance, for the non-poc sample the lowest mean value of conscientiousness belongs to Rafayel mains)

===Emotionality===

Caleb(M=14.7, SD=3.49) mains had the lowest emotionality score, and the difference between them and Zayne(M=15.6, SD=3.04), Rafayel(M=15.5, SD=3.11), and Sylus(M=15.5, SD=3.33) mains was significant

Personal comment:......Babes lolololol. Is Caleb's robot alter taking over his mains?? Did they get a Toring chip as well? It's so funny omg

===Self-Discipline===

Rafayel(M=10.1, SD=2.96) and Caleb(M=10.1, SD=2.97) mains had similarly low scores of self-discipline, and they differed from Zayne(M=10.8, SD=2.87) and Sylus(M=10.8, SD=2.79) significantly.

Personal comment: As a Rafayel main, I can confirm this.

=Second Love Interest=

Most of Zayne mains chose Sylus as their second love interest. The other most preferred second love interest was Caleb, but since this test was done just before Caleb's new myth, the results might be affected by our excitement for it. Also, Zayne mains showed low preference for Rafayel.

A note about less significant/non-significant observations:

As a whole, we have low extraversion and average conscientiousness, as well as high openness to experience, neuroticism, and agreeableness

For subcategories, we have the highest mean for imagination and the lowest mean for gregariousness. (perfect combination to date fictional men)

Sylus and Zayne mains had similar mean scores in many main factors and subfactors of the Big Five test. Likewise, Rafayel and Caleb mains' scores were close to each other, and they contrasted with Sylus and Zayne(not always significantly tho). Xavier mains generally had balanced scores.

None of the groups differed significantly in terms of openness to experience, neuroticism, extroversion, and these factors' subcategories.

To check if the data gives standard results, I checked socioeconomic status(SES) and its relation to neuroticism since previous studies indicate higher neuroticism for low SES groups, and it was the same for this dataset as well. Anxiety, depression, and neuroticism showed a slightly decreasing trend as the SES increased.

Some studies suggest that people of color have lower trust scores, but in this study, poc had higher trust than non-poc. However, it might be due to the differences in exposure to discrimination between poc who live in the US and those who are natives of other countries.

Most of Unix systems are managed by using Shell. Just as you need to know a minimum number of words to have a discussion in a language, you need to know a minimum number of commands to be able to easily interact with a system. Unix systems all have, sometimes with slight differences, the same set of commands. While it is not too hard to remember commands, it might be hard to remember all of their options and how exactly to use them. The solution to this is the man command. Let’s go through a part of the ssh one, as there are few elements to know to be able to read a man page:

Some tips:

The NAME will summarize what the command is doing. As it is usually super short, you might want to look at DESCRIPTION (bellow) if ever it does not gives clear enough information

The SYNOPSIS will help you to understand the structure of the command:

Here’s another castle house, and this one has a different take on the castle theme. It’s in Niles, Michigan, is currently off the market, and the price is confusing. Masterlist

Working at Chicago Med was stressful, to say the least. Every day was filled with what felt like hundreds of patients, running around to make sure you were taking care of them to the best of your ability. For the most part being an ED doctor with fulfilling, seeing people come in sick and come out good as new. But other times it was draining, either from being swept off your feet every minute of the day or doing all that you could for a person and it still not being enough. That was what had happened today.

You were content as you entered the ED that morning, having spent the night at your boyfriend’s. Everything about your relationship was absolutely perfect, with everyone around you noticing your positive change of mood since getting together with Hank. Walking towards the nurse's station to log into a computer, Maggie and April came over to greet you, both commenting on the large grin that plastered your face.

“Someones happy,” April teased, watching your cheeks glow, as you looked down in mock embarrassment.

“Couldn’t have anything to do with the Sergeant boyfriend of yours could it?” Maggie lowered her head as well, trying to catch your eyes to find the truth within them. Opening your mouth to reply, you were interrupted by an incoming patient being wheeled on a gurney, the paramedics beside it holding a grim look on their faces.

The patient turned out to be a six-year old girl, she had suffered severe trauma to multiple areas of her body, including broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a mild concussion. You immediately took the case, being the only ED doctor available at the moment, but also specialising in paediatrics alongside Dr Manning. Looking the girl over, you noted each of her injures, seeing it was consistent with a severe car accident, and proceeding to insert a needle into her lung to allow it to re-inflate, before sending her upstairs to the OR for surgery. To an adult, the injuries wouldn’t have been fatal, but for a girl this size, the extent of the trauma didn’t bode well for her chances of survival. Praying for her as she was wheeled up to surgery, you felt a tear come to your eye, hoping that this little girl would actually be able to live her life to the fullest. An hour had passed and you still hadn’t heard any news on the little girl, so instead of dwelling on it, you busied your mind, taking any patients Maggie would give you, from a broken leg to a baby with a fever. But finally, as you were leaving a low-level emergency case, your pager buzzed, signalling you to the PICU, nodding to Maggie on the way up, knowing it would be the girl who had just come out of surgery. Speaking to her surgeon, you waited for her anaesthetic to wear off, knowing it wouldn’t be too long because of the low dosage she was given. It seemed as though she had no family with her, either injured or dead from the car wreck and so you sat by her bed, not wanting her to be alone when she finally woke up.

As she woke, you held her hand, introducing yourself, trying to make her as comfortable as you could. You spoke to her for a long time, completely forgetting about your other duties downstairs, instead, trying to make her laugh, telling stories and attempting to get her to recall the events that had happened earlier that day. Building trust was important to you, knowing she would need someone who she was happy with before all the other doctors and DCFS got involved. But time got cut short as your pager once again demanded you downstairs to deal with another patient. Quickly saying goodbye, you dashed downstairs to deal a man with a GSW to the abdomen. Checking his wound thoroughly, you tended to it before sending him to specialists upstairs. Content with the job you had done, you continued with your work in the ED.

After your shift had finished, you headed upstairs to say a final goodnight to the girl, bringing a small teddy with you that you had purchased in the gift shop, hoping it would keep her company overnight before you returned the next day. But as you walked towards her room something didn’t seem right. The lights were turned off, the bed empty. Maybe she had just been moved to a different room or ward, you thought to yourself, knowing there was probably a good explanation for this. Turning towards the nurse on duty behind the desk, you questioned her on the whereabouts of your new friend.

“Didn’t you hear? She coded and was pronounced dead an hour ago. Sorry Doctor Y/LN, I thought someone would have told you already.” Staring at the women, your mouth dropped open, stumbling backwards a bit to brace yourself on the doorway behind. Tears fell from your eyes, why would the universe allow an innocent young child to be taken so earlier in their life? Moving back downstairs you felt numb, just wanting this tragic day to be over. You texted Hank telling him you were on your way back and that you had the most horrible day, not going into any details on how or why.

He felt bad for you, knowing the type of tragedies you saw daily, experiencing similar in his line of work, completely aware of the repercussions people felt being surrounded by death constantly. On top of making dinner for you, your text had prompted him to drove to the store in order to go above and beyond to try and boost your mood, buying things he knew would make your day better. Returning home he had about ten minutes before you would be back to try and set everything up, rushing about the house making sure every individual detail was perfect for your return. The table was prepared beautifully, accessorised with fancy silverware and candles, that were flickering slowly, ready and waiting to provide you with a romantic dinner. He had bought you a bouquet of your favourite flowers, already placed in a vase of water so you wouldn’t have to deal with the fuss of it on your arrival, and rose petals scattered along the floor in the direction of the table to add an extra romantic touch. Finally, he had one more surprise for you, hidden away in his back pocket, one that was guaranteed to make you smile.

Pulling into the driveway you exited your car, noting the darkness within the house, uncommon for this time of night and the fact that Hank had said he would be in all evening. Opening the door you called out to him, hoping that he hadn’t been pulled into another case, spending the night in his office once again. But as you took off your coat to place it on the hook you noticed the flowers on the table, to be specific your favourite flowers. You called out to him again, hoping he would appear to explain what was happening. Looking up, he stood in the doorway, a slight smile on his face, as you finally looked round properly noticing the rose petals, candles and your favourite food on the table.

“You did this all for me?” You asked.

“Of course I did sweetheart, I know you’ve had it hard at work recently so I wanted to surprised you with some of your favourite things.” To most peoples surprise, Hank was a true romantic at heart despite the cold exterior he held, just wanting to pamper you and treat you like the queen you were. Whether that be buying you your favourite sweets or complimenting you whenever possible, he did everything in his power to make sure you were happy.

Leading you towards the dinner table, you both sat down, quickly making conversation about everything, except work, that being an unspoken rule between you. Conversation flowed easily, both of you just happy to be in the presence of each other once more. Dinner had been polished off, with Hank fetching the dessert from the fridge after as you uttered the millionth ‘thank you’ to him. You both tucked in, moaning at the flavour that tasted like heaven after the day you had had. Looking up you noticed your boyfriend's demeanour had changed, no longer joyful but instead nervous, staring at his hands in his lap.

“What’s wrong Hank?” You asked, worried you had done something to set off this mood change. Instead of replying he lifted his hands from his lap onto the table along with a velvet box, slowly opening it to reveal a ring.

But a handful of new studies offer surprising insights about how our canine companions age, perceive human speech, and find their way home.

A study published last month showed that dogs understand verbal communication just like we do: They parse out tone then meaning as separate aspects of human speech.

Dogs may also use Earth’s magnetic field like a compass to find their way home, other recent research revealed.

And another study published this summer found that puppies age much faster than older dogs do: which means you’re probably underestimating your dog’s human-age equivalent.

Taken together, these recent discoveries may change how you understand your pet.

We’ve been underestimating our dogs’ ages

Dogs live an average of 12 years. Human life expectancy, by contrast, is at least five times that, which is why many people go by the common rule of thumb that one “dog year” is equivalent to seven “human years.”

But that one-to-seven ratio is wrong, researchers found it’s a misunderstanding of how dogs’ ageing processes compare to those of humans. Instead, according to a July study, genetic evidence suggests that Labrador puppies and other young dogs age faster than their older counterparts.

“What’s surprising is exactly how old a 1-year-old dog is: it’s like a 30-year-old human,” Trey Ideker, a co-author of that study, said in a press release.

But after that first year or two, dogs age more slowly as time passes – or rather, their cells do. So for each year older a dog gets, the corresponding increase in “human years” gets smaller. A 12-year-old Labrador is 70 human years old, the study found.

Ultimately, in order to calculate your dog’s human-age equivalent, you’ll need a calculator. The researchers’ formula is: A dog’s human age = 16 ln * your dog’s age + 31. (The ln refers to the natural log of a number.)

Dogs understand speech in the same way we do

When humans hear someone speak, our brains divide the work of processing that verbal communication between the left and right hemispheres. First, the right hemisphere focuses on parsing out the speaker’s underlying tone, then the left hemisphere processes the meaning of what we’ve heard.

Researchers discovered in 2014 that dogs’ brains divvy up the task of speech processing in the same way, between their left and right hemispheres, though the scientists weren’t sure of the order in which that happened.

The recent study, however, found that dogs understand tone first, then meaning, in the same order humans do. The authors examined the brain activity of 12 pet dogs – six border collies, five golden retrievers, and one German shepherd – using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine.

They had the dogs listen to known praise words like “clever,” “well done,” and “that’s it,” as well as unknown words like “as if” and “yet” in both praising and neutral tones. The data showed that the dogs processed “simpler, emotionally loaded cues” like tone first, then “more complex, learnt cues,” Attila Andics, one of the co-authors, said in a press release.

Dogs use the magnetic field to navigate

Dogs have an uncanny ability to find their way home using their sense of smell. But that’s not the only navigational tool at their disposal: Pups can also orient themselves using Earth’s magnetic field, according to a June study.

Birds, whales, and dolphins also use the same sixth sense, called magnetoreception, to plot their long migrations.

“The magnetic field may provide dogs with a ‘universal’ reference frame, which is essential for long-distance navigation, and arguably, the most important component that is ‘missing’ from our current understanding of mammalian special behaviour and cognition,” the authors of the recent study wrote.

The researchers used GPS trackers to study how 27 dogs navigated over the course of 662 expeditions between 2014 and 2017 in the Czech Republic. They chose hunting breeds like terriers and dachshunds, which are trained to find prey like foxes in dense woodlands, then find their way back to their owners.

The researchers found that after the dogs were released into the woods, the animals typically retraced their steps back to their release point by following their own scent.

But in one-third of the expeditions, the dogs took a different way home: On those trips, most of the dogs started off by running for 65 feet (20 metres) along Earth’s north-south axis – even if the direction of their destination didn’t align with that orientation.

This “compass run” helps the dogs figure out where magnetic north and south are, and where they are in relation to those points, according to the study authors.

“This run is instrumental for bringing the mental map into register with the magnetic compass and to establish the heading of the animal,” they wrote.

Kateřina Benediktová, one of the study authors, told Live Science that unlike hunting dogs, a “human would most probably get lost without a compass and a map if roaming over comparable distances in unfamiliar forested areas.”

Flower language in Alicization

Hanakotoba (Flower language) is the Japanese art of assigning meanings to flowers, and many of the meanings differ from western symbolism. While it’s mostly a lost art IRL it’s still widely used in media as a way to express some underlying message to the audience. In SAO Alicization flowers are shown and name-dropped a lot it’s almost begging for nerdy viewers like me to look up the meaning.

As you know, blue is not a natural color of roses in our world. For the longest time, blue rose is a dream for rose enthusiasts around the world but impossible to create, until 2004 when Suntory managed to create blue rose by genetic engineering of a white rose. Therefore this flower managed to carry 2 seemingly contradicting meanings of “Impossible/ Unattainable ” and “Dream/ miracle comes true”. As Eugeo’s theme flower, I think the story is like this: Eugeo reuniting with his friends Kirito & Alice again is like a dream comes true, but so many other things of his life (insert spoilers) are unattainable.

“For a ‘sand sea’ this place is nothing like the ocean,” Jane groused as she and Garrus settled in beside their small fire for the evening. Four days into their journey and she longed for the call of birds and rustle of leaves, the sound of water lapping against the shore or else cascading down the marble fountains of the Presidium.

The Widow Sea that bordered the Citadel was a real ocean; azure waves that extended out past the horizon so that on a cloudless day the line between heaven and water blurred, an endless expanse of blue. 

“What’s it like?”

Startled, Jane lifted her eyes from where they’d been affixed on the ballet of leaping flames. “What’s what like?” she asked.

Garrus glided closer, lowering his upper body so that they were eye-level. “The ocean. I’ve never seen it.” 

Jane felt her eyebrows raise, though she supposed this confession wasn’t that unusual. Palaven was landlocked and turians rarely ventured out of its sun choked heart.

“The Widow Sea is full of life,” Jane said, drawing on memories of the last time she’d gone snorkeling. “Out past the breakers, beneath the surface, is a coral reef; like a marine garden. There’s fish with scales that catch the light and reflect it in hues of silver and orange, emerald and amethyst. Every rock and sunken log or beam is encrusted with corals. Some sway with the water, others are bony and stand tall against the pull of the tide.” A fond smile played across Jane’s lips as she recounted the songs and clicks of dolphins, the way sea turtles flew through the kaleidoscope water and overhead gulls and terns filled the sky. 

“It sounds beautiful,” Garrus replied, a wistful sigh to his voice. 

“It is,” Jane agreed, smile fading into a frown as she took in her current surroundings. No salty breeze tussled her hair, and the persistent feeling of being parched plagued her even when she slept. She’d dream of of her skin flaking off in crinkling pieces like dead leaves, turning to dust on the desert wind. ln the end, all that would remain was brittle, sun bleached bone, waiting to be covered by a shroud of sand. 

“The desert is full of life too, you know,” Garrus commented after a moment. 

“No it’s not,” Jane snorted. “You and I are probably the only living things for miles.”

She felt more than heard a soft rumble from the prince and turned to see him staring at her with pierced mandibles pinched firmly to his face. “The wildlife might not be as flashy as that in the ocean, but it’s here all the same.”

Jane looked at him skeptically. “The most life I’ve seen here are beetles,” she informed him. 

“Insects are still alive,” he countered. “And some are rather pretty, too, if you take the time to look. Their shells gleam like iridescent jewels in the sun; they’re living gem stones. And of course there’s snakes, and chameleons, and golden moles.”

“Golden moles?” Jane repeated. “What are those?”

Garrus hummed, a different, more soothing sound pulsing through his scintillating coils that sparked in the firelight like polished steel. “Golden moles are a type of rodent. They swim beneath the sand, shooting upwards to eat beetles and crickets. Their fur is a radiant gold that catches moonbeams and practically glows.” Garrus’ posture softened as he added “my mother used to say that they were stars trapped on earth, traipsing across the dunes instead of the sky.”

“Those... actually do sound pretty,” Jane admitted. “Do you think we’ll see any?”

“Maybe,” Garrus chuckled, drawing Jane’s attention to how close he was. She could almost feel the warmth suffusing off his scales, inviting her to snuggle up against him. Would he mind, she wondered, if she leaned against him? The pull of comforting heat tugged at her chilled shoulders and deciding to test the limits of their new friendship, Jane allowed herself to rest her back against him. 

She felt his breath hitch before what sounded like a gentle purr left his throat. Neither spoke, instead turning their gazes back to the fire, images of oceans and golden moles playing out in the embers. Perhaps the desert wasn’t so wretched after all.

Once Upon A December: Part 1/? (Jack Frost X Reader)

I toyed with the small white snowflake on my neck and set it down on my chest once more, looking to the ground as I gulped in fear.

"We were young back then. My older sister, my little brother, and me. I was about five years older than him, she was three years older than I, and I was only fifteen. The three of us were inseparable, even taking part in the same activities. When Lila sighed up for dance, the two of us were right behind her. When Robb joined the soccer league, Lila and I were usually living in games an hour before and after him. Even when I joined Ice-Skating, the three of us woke up early in the morning to skate on the small pound across from our property, knowing our parents would scold us if they knew we doing something dangerous like this But within a year, my life was thrown completely out of balance as my sister left for college. I know, I still have Robb, but he isn't even talking to me anymore. No one is. Even now that its been two years since she left and-" I paused, turning to my  therapist who was looking out of the window at the falling snow through the frosted window. She wasn't even listening. To think my parents pay her. All she does is prescribe me different types of Anti-Depressants because apparently I'm just to depressed to be bothered. Angry, I joined her as she looked out the window.

Children were running across the street throwing balls of pure white snow while other sledded down great hill. Meanwhile some just sat there building snowmen and igloo's. I looked at my therapist again once more, standing from my chair and leaving her in her strange daze, grabbing my backpack and skates on my way out the door.

The lake wasn't far from the therapy center. Nothing in this tiny town was. You knew everyone and everyone had a stereotype. No one likes me and I really don't understand why. I try to be nice. I try to caring. I try to be selfless. I try to be perfect. Do I have to try harder? Do I have to be flawless in order to fit in?

As children, we are constantly reminded and pushed to figure out our lives. We are told we have one chance and we cant screw it up. We are told to figure out who we are and do it quickly because if you don't, then you will be left with little to nothing. That's life today. People have really forgotten that children are merely that, kids. We aren't machines like people such as my parents seem to think. They have my seven year old brother already planning out which college he wants to go to and is saving all of his money to get there! The only time that the younger ones get off is Winter Break.

What happened to fun?!  What happened to dreams?!

My parents defiantly don't support mine. I guess I should say didn't.

Since I started skating, it has been my passion. I took classes, got private lessons, and practiced from dawn until dusk just to make it happen. My parents didn't care. Last year the dropped me out of the class and demanded I put my money to something like saving for college or an apartment. Luckily, I was still able to sign up for commotions, as they didn't cost much and I could sew my own  costumes. Easy. I didn't get caught either. That was, I mean, until my last competition. My parents freaked out at me after the competition, dragging me out of the rink as soon as I had finished my routine. Half the ride home they had spent screaming at me. The other half was spent in silence as I hid my tears and pretended to be asleep.

They left me locked in the car that night, and I left with my bag swung across my chest, cellphone in my pocket, heading straight to the lake.

Now looking across the frozen water as I tightened my laces, about to make my way over to the ice, headphones in both ear.

The first step is always the hardest when it comes to skating, especially on frozen lakes. If you aren't careful then the ice crack or breaks and you will die.

I should have tested the water.. But I just need to get it all out.. My emotions and feelings. This is the way I had always done it.

Besides. I can feel where the ice is bad. It is obviously thinner than the other and you can feel it on the blades...

Leaning back and allowing my feet to themselves around, I closed my eyes drifting off into my mind as the cold winter wind. I could paint the picture in my of the world around me, but who wants to stay in reality?

Instead, I was wrapped in the arms of a boy as he skated behind me. His presence was  warm, but still, nerves and fear settled in on the girl ahead of us with matching brown hair and eyes. The same cold, pale skin. I could feel a hand grab mine as the three of us formed a small chain. Pulling around in a circle and the boy let go of me to spin his sister around and I smiled, looking up at the blue moon in the sky.

"It's amazing what we can come up with in our minds, isn't it Y/N?"A deep accented voice asked causing me to jump and look around.

"Who....Who are you?" I asked, fear creeping up into my mind, "What do you want from me? Where are-"

"Y/N?" The boy asked, his voice music to my ears, skating over to me and grabbing my hand, "Are you okay?" I looked into his eyes for a moment , then down at the small child clutching his leg, sadness and confusion drowning in her pupils. I smiled at him slightly, blushing a bit but still shaking from fear.

"Y-Yeah... I'm fine Jack." I faked a smile, leaning into his arms, "Just cold."

Jack? Why does this sound so familiar....

"Do you want to take a break? We can go inside and-"

"No." I cut him off, looking down at the girl, getting on one knee and hugging her briefly, "I think I'm jut going to sit down for a while. You two go on ahead. I be out there with you two in a minute." Nodding, we parted as I sat in the snow and the siblings spun each other around, Jack throwing me the occasional smile making me blush. It was nice.. peaceful. That was until a migraine was sent spiraling into my head forcing me to collapse into the snow.

"Why don't you just give into your mind Y/N?" The voice returned and I stood up , shaking slightly, turning to Jack and Emma, "Isn't it so much easier here? Where you don't have to try?"

Here? That's right.. I'm just in my head revisiting this nightmare.

"Leave me alone." I snapped coldly, standing onto my feet and getting back onto the slippery ice attempting to escape my own mind. If I keep fighting, maybe he'll leave me alone? That's how it usually works. I skated towards my two friends and looked behind me as the cloud of black swarms towards me. I paused, looking at the two who coward a bit, confused, like always.

Okay.. if you look at the cloud and think hard enough Y/N... It will stop and go away and leave you alone. Closing my eyes, I thought long and hard at the cloud, opening my eyes moments later only to find it closer .

An arm grabbed me from behind, reveling Jack holding Emma up to his chest and pulling me by the shoulder away as we ran into the woods.

"Y/N we have to keep going!" Jack shouted shaking me as I panted. "It will be here any minute."

"You're.... You're not real..." I said between pants, turning away from him and I sat on a log. "Go home... Take... Take Emma home."

"What are you talking about Y/N?!" He exclaimed and I felt a figure grasp my hand, "What do you mean I'm not real?"

"Yeah Y/N.." The dark voice haunted in my head, "What are you talking about?"

Tear brimmed at my eyes as I pinched my skin.

"I need to wake up.. I need to wake up right now."

"Y/N.." Jack pleaded before he was cut out by the voice once more.

"Right now love? Can't we have some fun first?"

As if that was enough for the voice to say, a memory of the man's face was enough to put me over the edge and move away from Jack in search of Emma.... But she wasn't there....

"Emma?" I hollered, looking around, "EMMA!" A sudden panic attack hit me as I ran franticly, trying to find the child, "EMMA! EMMA WHERE ARE-"

The sky suddenly got black and out of the corner of my mind a could hear a earth shattering scream as the cloud surrounded me, blurring up my vision. The black smoke filled my lungs and I coughed uncontrollably, falling to my knees as dizziness found me.

"How long did you think you could go without me finding you Y/N?" The voice continued, laughing darkly, "You're mine once more."

*His POV*

I tapped gently on Jamie's window, waiting for the eldest Bennett child let me in. Surprisingly, it was Sophie who instead let me into the house.

She wrapped her small arms around me and I picked her up gently as she  laughed wildly.

"Hey  Snowflake," I laughed as I set her down, "Look how much you've grown in a year."

"Merry Christmas Eve Jack." She beamed up at me as she grabbed my hand pulling me out of the room and I closed the window.

"Merry Christmas eve." I returned the smile, "Where's your brother?"

"Downstairs. Trying to call the sitter." She replied, "She's never late and usually is early. We're actually a bit worried.. Do you want to see him?"

"Sure." I shrugged  as the girl rapidly ran me down the stairs screaming out to her brother who dropped the phone and ran into my embrace, nearly pushing me over.

"And look at you." I snickered as he let go, "You're going to be taller than me any day now!"

"How long do you get to stay Jack?" Jamie asked excitedly, causing his small sister to echo the action in a hyper manner. 

"Um... I don't know. Maybe an hour or two. Maybe three-"

"But Jack!" Sophie cried out, "You never come and see us!"

"Sophie he has to make it snow! He's kind of busy and has more important things to do than to babysit us when Y/N Y/LN goes missing!"

"Hey now. You know you guys are my top priority..." I trailed off as the sentence the boy had just spoke repeated into my head, memories and concern flooding into my brain, "Jamie.. Did you just say..."

"Y/N? She's the middle child in the Y/L/N family? With her two siblings? Yeah. She also teaches Sophie how to Ice-Skate for free."

"Do you know her Jack?" Little Sophie asked sweetly.

"Yes." I sighed, full of worry, "Yes I do."

"How?" Jamie asked, pulling both he and his sister on the couch.

There is no way that I'm telling them the truth, they'd fear her and she isn't like that... She's never been like that...

"Um... We were friends. She knew me.. before I guess. When I had a sister just like you," I paused, placing a hand on Sophie's, "She used to teach Emma how to skate...We were close but something happened to her and then something happened to me... It's been a while since I've seen her actually..."

"Then let's go find her!" Both of them exclaimed and I couldn't help but snicker in my worry.

"I'll go. You two need to spend time together. It's Christmas Eve!" I made up the excuse as I headed towards the door

"But we wanna spend time with you! Please J-"

"Hey... I'll be right back.. And Y/N will be back with me too. Okay? Now be good." I replied leaving the two gaping at me, confused.

Soaring up into the air creating a snowstorm from my own fear, I flew to the lake where I'd been assigned to watch the girl and I called out to her.

I know, my directions were to wait, but I couldn't anymore. She's been found... She needs to know...

"Y/N..." I called gently, letting my feet hovering above the ice as my eyes scanned the area.

There.

A pothole right there, and I don't think she fell in. I really don't think things just work like that for her.

Never have, Never will.

Rushing to the area, I picked her small, shaking body up from the hole and started to fly her back to the house when I noticed the blood soaking through her sleeve, quickly rolling it up to revel a small message.

I'm back. 

"Jack.." She moaned in her sleep, "He got me.. He hit me and he took everything and-"

"Shh... It's okay. I got you... Nothing's going to get you... Not anymore..."

"I'm so scared..."

"Don't be. Because nothing is going to touch you.. I have you again and I'm never going to let you go... Ever..."
