Different Needs

Women and men have both a different physique and a different role in life. Even if we don’t have to fulfill this role today, our bodies and hormones are evolutionarily designed for it. Women can give birth to children, and men can father children and are responsible for the maintenance of the family.

Due to the emancipation movement in many countries around the world, children are raised differently today than they were 50 years ago. Gender roles, and thus also gender-typical parenting have changed in many parts of the world. It can be said that much more is possible today, and that our development depends on our living conditions and the respective parenting methods.

Apart from that, in my opinion, there are gender-typical needs and, based on that, gender-typical behaviour.

Drive

A man needs his independence. He is a lone wolf for whom success and status are important. Therefore, he directs his life towards creating and achieving something. That makes him happy and satisfied.

A woman is a social being. People, encounters, and relationships are very important to her. Therefore, she needs to interact and connect with others. It’s in her nature to help in whatever way she can. This makes her happy and satisfied.

wheelchair users deserve a minimum of three wheelchairs to meet different needs. like, bare minimum of indoor chair, outdoor chair, and off road chair. chairs that meet different needs for transport, activity, positioning needs, energy levels, etc.

there is not "one chair" that can meet every need. wheelchair users deserve to have multiple chairs that meet specific needs, no matter how complex their seating/positioning needs. we deserve to at least have a backup if our chair breaks that is just as suited to our needs.

Talking About Feelings

Generally, a man wants to be seen as a doer and protector who has everything under control. This is the reason why he rarely talks about his feelings. Showing and talking about feelings is considered a weakness in many cultures. Therefore, feelings are an area that many (heterosexual) men haven’t developed access to or a way to deal with.

A woman, on the other hand, is naturally talkative. Due to her empathy and caring nature, she likes to talk about her feelings and everything she has experienced and that concerns her. This is her way of encountering life and sharing her life.

In a relationship, both needs clash. On the one hand, there’s the man who absolutely doesn't want to talk about his feelings because this would lower his testosterone levels (and his masculine image along with them). On the other side, there’s the woman who wants to/must talk about her feelings, so that she feels comfortable and accepted. Another factor that plays a role is that a woman sees herself and her partner as unit. Therefore, it’s normal for her to tell him everything that’s bothering her and that she wants to know how he’s doing and what is bothering him.

Such a situation often results in misunderstandings, in which both parties are hurt. Because when a man is pressured into talking about his feelings, he is caught in a dilemma. On the one hand, he loves his partner and would like to do her a favour and respond. But on the other hand, he doesn't know what to say, as he usually doesn’t have access to his feelings. Therefore, a forced conversation like this is very stressful for a man, because it’s too strange, too intense and too much for him. It overwhelms him! He feels threatened by it and therefore reacts either by fight (he becomes loud and aggressive), flight (he leaves the room) or freeze (he remains silent). The woman is then disturbed as to why she can't get a normal response from him.

it’s not necessarily that I hate the themes most prevalent in fiction set in the real world and it’s not necessarily that I don’t like stories revolving around real people or relationship drama or interpersonal issues it’s more like im a dog who doesn’t recognize that a pill is still a pill if it has peanut butter on it. I need like the little peanut butter spoonful that is aliens or robots or monsters or time travel or something fantastical and not at all down to earth real life so that you can approach me and be like “this story is about how friendships can deteriorate over time and also how this guy feels bad for being a bad friend and causing his buddy problems with their girlfriend” and then look at me making a face at you and be like “AND! they’re all aliens who are doing all that across spacetime” and I’ll be like OHHHHHH OKAY YAY (shlop shlap shlup the sound of a dog horking down peanut butter pills) wow what a poignant story
