an excuse to show off some of the things I learned when I went on a ghost hunt a few months back hahaha
“Ripley,” he said, once they were inside and no stray passersby could possibly hear. “I’ve learned a lot about vampires since we last hung out.”
“Oh, yeah?” she said. She dropped her bag and dropped down next to it, started pulling boxes and meters out.
Nat did the same. “Yeah,” he said. “I learned that we have to, like, kill people. And also that when we die we explode into a huge gory mess of eyes and teeth. If we get shot in the brain or poisoned real bad.”
“Pretty fucking gnarly, hey?”
“Mm,” Nat said. “What kind of people do you go after?”
“Oh, I mostly just hang out at bars and eat creeps,” Ripley said. “Someone slips something into someone’s drink, someone gets a little too nonconsensually handsy… I’ll lure ‘em out back and take care of ‘em.”
“Cool,” Nat said. But Quinn’s earlier concern still scratched at his mind. “Doesn’t that get dangerous, though?” he asked. “Like, what if someone sees you? What if someone traces the deaths back to you?”
“Well, the cops are useless, for one,” Ripley said. She started fiddling with a small box and a few blinking lights snapped on. “Drunk people aren’t the most observant, either. It’s fine.”
“And vampire hunters?” Nat pressed.
She tilted her head. “We don’t get those here too often anymore. Hunters don’t think there’s many vampires left in Darwelaide.”
“What about the Knight?”
“The Knight?” Ripley peered at him over the top of her box. “Where did you hear that name?”
“From… um, Quinn.”
She pursed her lips. “Oh,” she said. “Well, they’re probably just trying to rile you up, get you nervous. The Knight hasn’t been around for twenty, thirty years. She’s pretty famous. And pretty dead.”
Ripley nudged through the collection of objects on the ground with her boot, naming each of them as she did so.
“We got EMF readers for measuring fluctuations in electromagnetic fields,” she said. “We got digital voice recorders to record sounds beyond human hearing…”
“Beyond vampire hearing, too?”
“Depends how nervous you are.”
“I’m not nervous.”
“Not scared of ghosts, Natty?”
“Not really. But kind of. But not. I mean, I don’t think they exist,” Nat said. “But I used to think vampires didn’t exist either. And I watched Supernatural Activity when I was way too young for it and it scarred me for life.”
Ripley laughed. “We’re probably the scariest things out here. What’s a ghost going to do to a vampire?”
“It could shoot me in the brain or poison me real bad.”
Her laugh became a cackle. When she settled, she said, “We have infrared thermometers, for measuring mysterious drops in temperature. Cold spots. We got motion-sensing cat toys—”
“Why?”
“The cat toys? Yeah, they cost, like, two dollars and work as good as any proper ghost-hunting sensor. They start flashing whenever something touches them.” Ripley unzipped a small case and pulled out a few seemingly unrelated objects. “We have trigger items here—things the ghosts of old might find interesting. Flask of alcohol, chocolate, tobacco… we put the cat toys with a trigger item and see what happens.”
“Oh, cool!” Nat said.
“And this guy”—Ripley waved about the box she was holding—“is a spirit box. It’s really fun. We’ll do this one together.”
“How does it work?”
“It scans through radio frequencies in little bursts and provides a way for spirits to communicate.”
“Ooh.”
“Here, grab some of these and turn them on.” Ripley made a sweeping motion to her equipment. “Go nuts! Go put ‘em around the place, anywhere that gives you spooky vibes.”
“We don’t keep them with us?”
“Ghosts are skittish. Ghosts are shy. You want to leave the devices in peace, mostly.”

⋆˚࿔ october prompts 𝜗𝜚˚⋆
So after working suuuper hard on today's prompt I realized that the list I was using skipped #10 and that I had actually filled prompt #11 SO I have gone and I have found a #10 on a DIFFERENT list and filled that one... you'll get #11 tomorrow! I don't like this one as much seeing as how I just like... frantically wrote it after realizing the one I had just finished was #11 and not #10... So have a subpar #10 and check back tomorrow it's much better...
¹⁰⁾ cold hands
Matty’s hands were always cold, I have poor circulation, he would grumble, shoving his fingers into the crook of George’s neck for warmth, causing him to gasp and flinch away. It wasn’t just Matty’s hands that were always cold, he, as a being, was always cold. He could always be found wrapped up in blankets and hoodies, the temperature control in their flat set to near tropical temperatures. Matty was always cold, and Matty always had cold hands. It was a fact of life that George had accepted, making sure he reminded Matty to bring a pair of gloves or mittens when it was 10 degrees or cooler out.
So Matty’s hands being warm, his fingers wrapped around George’s wrist as he begged him to stay a few more minutes, was enough to sound the alarm in George’s brain, alerting him to the fact that something wasn’t right.
“I’m fine,” Matty grumbled, when George voiced this concern, adjusting the sheet he was tangled up in, that was another check in the worry column George thought. Matty had kicked off his many blankets in his sleep, leaving him wrapped in just the top sheet. Despite the lack of blankets his cheeks were flushed, his eyes unfocused. “I don’t have a fever.” He insisted.
“I’m just really tired, and really deserve snuggles, and you are currently withholding snuggles which is honestly extremely rude of you.” Matty complained.
“I’ll be right back,” George tried to placate him, knowing that if Matty really was sick, if he really did have a fever like George suspected, he was going to be even clingier than usual. He also was going to most likely realize just how poorly he was really feeling once he was properly awake, which meant that the sooner George got some medicine in him the better.
“Or you could just stay,” Matty pouted. George frowned, trying to decide if Matty sounded congested, or if his voice had always sounded like that in the morning.
“I’ll be right back,” George promised, slipping out of Matty’s grasp. He quickly crossed the expanse of their bedroom and retrieved the thermometer from the medicine cabinet. He also grabbed a bottle of an over the counter fever reliever. Matty’s hydro flask was sitting untouched on his nightstand.
“Open your mouth,” George said, climbing back up onto the bed to kneel over Matty who opened his eyes with a frown.
“I know I said I felt fine but I’m not sure I’m really up for that this morning—” Matty started before George cut him off by shoving the thermometer into his mouth and under his tongue.
Matty frowned, his harsh gaze showing just how betrayed he felt by George’s surprise attack. The thermometer beeped a moment later and Matty quickly spat it out, letting George look at the digital display.
“I was right,” said George smugly before instantly feeling guilty, this was one time where it probably would have been better if he was wrong. “You have a fever.”

Coming in at 5’4”, Reese comes across as a little too pale, a little too lean - there’s an undercurrent of frailty that the rest of her seems built on like a house of cards, just waiting for one wrong move to scatter her to the winds. It’s reflected in her eyes, too. Her gaze, a bit too bright, her pupils a bit too wide, the sheen of blue a hint too silvery. Her skin is pale, and almost without blemish; pale dots of color flush her cheeks and her lips are peach hued and plump, despite the fact they are often pinched and scraped between her teeth (which are healthy and mostly straight). Her hair, often clumped into a thick braid or messy bun and shoved into a knit cap, is a soft honey gold in hue, with somewhat raggedy layers throughout, wispy long bangs and edges that frame her face, and when unbound, the longest edges graze the midway point of thigh and bend of knee.
She possesses a natural grace, though the longer she’s awake and the more she’s had to drink or if she’s mixed her prescription meds with alcohol or non prescription drugs she can get clumsy to the point of accruing many bumps and bruises; she still retains finer dexterity and speech patterns well through sheer force of will and habit. She has a tendency to pick up on the natural accents, linguistics and speech patterns of people that she’s around a lot - some of this is a habit picked up instinctively out of self preservation, some of it is just her natural ear for language and the music of words.
Her normal speech pattern is somewhat rambling, train of thought, run on sentences but she rarely exhibits this way of talking unless she’s incredibly comfortable around someone and or incredibly tired or very, very mellowed by her prescriptions / laudanum / whatever. There is a tiny touch of Russian accent buried in her natural speech pattern but faint enough it would probably take a native or well learned ear to pick up on it. She speaks many languages. She reads and writes even more of them than she speaks / understands audibly.
Her clothes are haphazard, usually chosen for comfort over style, layered options that can be adjusted for temperature and whim; the clothes are generally well worn, a mend can be seen here and there, and if one looks closely enough they might spy splatters and stains of ink and paint here and there, and depending upon the day might note corresponding stains and smears of charcoal and ink on her fingers (and maybe even face). She almost always carries a worn but once incredibly luscious leather backpack that looks like it might be older than she is (because it is) that serves as purse, duffel, overnight and travel bag. (She might throw a messenger bag on if needed for her art supplies but that’s generally only for specific outings.) She opts for platform boots, usually ankle, doc martens are a fave, for day to day wear and she will never be seen without her fingerless elbow length gloves, or detachable sleeves that cover from upper arm to palm, or some similar covering for her arms. Her jewelry is typically simple, some random leather cord with charm, or some mix of silver and gold choker and necklaces pairing, random dangly earrings and bangles. (The price range here ranges the most dramatically with dollar store plastic bangles worn with a several carat necklace that she just liked and pulled out of her jewelry box that morning.)
In terms of tech, she carries one or two phones, air pods, over the ear beats, a top of the line tablet (iPad probably for digital art). Always carries at least two books to read, a sketch pad and various drawing tools, and a very worn old leather journal that she still occasionally writes down snippets of music in when no one else is around. Also, vanilla cloves, a silver zippo, various drugs, prescription and otherwise, a flask, random snacks and whatever else happens to be stuffed in her bag at any given time.
She has two lobe piercings, a cartilage piercing in each ear, one daith piercing, a nose piercing (left nostril). Others may come and go, including but not limited to tongue, belly button, nipples, clit. Tattoos, none usually but may vary on verse. Scars, may vary some based on threads; some random scatterings here and there but no major ones in most verses except her forearms. (Most injuries before her initial death were minor, so the scars are really faded and small and anything after her healing factor kicked in eventually fades away entirely.)

Some impressions from me making some nitric acid for the first time; went much better than expected, the distillate seems to be of slightly over azeotropic concentration, while the dilute part from the little NO2 "scrubber" is some single digit percentage. I was really surprised by how little NO2 was produced, as I used a bisulfate in place of sulfuric acid, which requires a higher temperature (where I would expect more of the nitric to decompose). Idk why that happened, but for now I'm just happy that it worked out.
Overall the experiment yielded about 40g of the acid; tho there is almost certainly more left in the distillation flask, I just ran out of time, and thus didn't finish the distillation; maybe a project for later.

Lab Supplies | CP Lab Safety
Lab supplies are the backbone of any scientific, research, or industrial laboratory. Whether you're testing chemical compounds, measuring samples, or ensuring workplace safety, having the right tools on hand ensures accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with industry standards. From glassware and pipettes to personal protective equipment (PPE), every component plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of lab work.
Tumblr media
At the heart of every successful experiment lies not only the scientist’s expertise but also the quality of the materials they use. That’s why choosing reliable, high-grade lab supplies is not just a matter of convenience—it’s a necessity.
The Importance of Quality Lab Supplies
Using substandard lab equipment can compromise results, delay testing, and even pose safety risks. For laboratories working in industries such as pharmaceuticals, environmental testing, food analysis, and healthcare, precision is non-negotiable. A small measurement error or contamination can have major consequences, especially in regulated environments.
High-quality lab supplies ensure:
Accurate test results
Improved safety for lab personnel
Increased productivity
Longer equipment lifespan
Regulatory compliance
In short, investing in trusted lab supplies contributes to both the credibility and operational efficiency of your lab.
Essential Categories of Lab Supplies
1. Glassware and Plasticware
From beakers and flasks to graduated cylinders and test tubes, this is perhaps the most recognizable category. Labs rely on this equipment for mixing, measuring, and holding samples. Choosing between glass and plastic depends on the chemical resistance, temperature tolerance, and accuracy required.
2. Pipettes and Measuring Tools
Precision is key in laboratory processes. Calibrated pipettes, burettes, and balances help technicians measure liquids and solids with the utmost accuracy. Digital pipettes and electronic balances are now popular for reducing manual error.
3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Safety in the lab goes beyond fire extinguishers and eyewash stations. Proper PPE—such as gloves, goggles, lab coats, and face shields—protects staff from harmful chemicals, biological agents, and other workplace hazards.
4. Lab Storage and Containers
Correct storage helps preserve the integrity of chemicals and samples. This includes airtight containers, reagent bottles, sample jars, and more. Properly labeled and durable storage prevents cross-contamination and ensures sample longevity.
5. Cleaning and Sanitation Supplies
Keeping lab equipment clean is critical for preventing contamination. Detergents, wipes, sterilizers, and autoclaves form the first line of defense against unwanted microbial or chemical interference.
Who Needs Lab Supplies?
Lab supplies aren't limited to large industrial labs. They are equally important in:
Educational institutions (schools, colleges, universities)
Medical laboratories
Research & development centers
Biotech and pharmaceutical companies
Environmental and water testing facilities
Food and beverage testing labs
No matter the industry, the need for reliable supplies remains constant.
Choosing the Right Supplier
Not all suppliers offer the same level of quality and service. When selecting a lab supply provider, look for:
Proven reputation and customer reviews
A wide selection of high-grade, compliant products
Availability of safety data sheets (SDS) and certifications
Clear descriptions and usage guidelines
Customer support and consultation availability
A trustworthy supplier can help match the right products with your lab’s specific needs and even assist with reordering or bulk procurement options.
Final Thoughts
In the world of laboratory science, there’s no room for shortcuts. The right lab supplies are not just supporting tools—they are integral to the success of your work. Whether you are setting up a new lab, restocking for a new research project, or upgrading your equipment for better performance, making informed decisions about your lab supplies can have lasting benefits.

Safe Monsoon Travel with Babies: What to Pack and What to Avoid
Tumblr media
Monsoon travel with babies is not just about booking tickets and packing diapers; it is a full-blown operation. Parents often encounter unpredictable weather, delayed transportation, wet clothes, and the constant fear of infections.
When you are travelling with your baby, every splash, every damp corner, and every bite from a mosquito becomes a concern. That is why planning and preparing with care is non-negotiable. Your baby’s comfort, health, and safety should be at the top of your checklist, especially when heading out in the monsoon.
We will walk you through must-have baby items for monsoon trips, smart baby travel essentials for monsoons, and some tips for how to travel with a baby in the rainy season. From what to pack to what to avoid, we have got it all covered for a stress-free journey!
Tumblr media
1. Must-Have Baby Essentials for Monsoon Trips
Ensuring your baby is comfortable when it is wet outside is very important. They will help protect your baby from getting wet, dirty, and sad during your trip.
Waterproof Diaper Bag with Compartments
A bag that is divided into wet and dry areas keeps your child’s clean belongings safe from dirty or wet ones. Choose Diaper bags that have nylon or polyester coatings and have zippers that are completely sealed.
Quick-Dry Clothing and Extra Sets
Since babies can get wet or sweaty fast, it is best to use fast-drying clothes like cotton blends or microfiber to avoid skin rashes and colds. Good choices are light and breathable onesies, pyjamas and frocks that open and close easily.
Extra Diapers for Backup
Having extra diapers is a good idea: use disposables for fast changes and cloth ones when you can keep them cleaner for a longer time. Bring waterproof packets or zip locks to hold your used clothes, and bring a gentle rash cream along in case it is needed.
Raincoat, Umbrella, and Waterproof Baby Cover
Both a baby raincoat and a stroller cover or a cover for a baby carrier can protect your baby without you having to do anything with your hands. Also, it helps to have a small umbrella handy and try using a clear waterproof cover over your baby’s stroller or pram.
2. Hygiene and Health Safety Musts
The immune system in your baby is still growing. During monsoon, it is very important to stay hygienic and have some basic healthcare supplies to prevent emergency doctor visits.
Travel-Size Hand Sanitiser and Baby Wipes
Pick hand sanitiser and wipes that are gentle on babies and do not contain alcohol or strong chemicals. Baby wipes should be part of your baby care supplies. You can use them for changing diapers as well as for cleaning hands, faces or questionable areas.
Basic Medicines and Fever Strip
A small first-aid pouch with basic baby medicines will help you take care of your baby. Be sure to have paracetamol drops, nasal drops, colic relief and a digital thermometer or fever strips in the kit. If you are visiting a different place with your child, it is best to get a travel kit from your paediatrician before you go.
Mosquito Repellent Patch or Lotion for Babies
Choose a mosquito repellent patch or lotion that is made for use on babies. Pick insect repellents that do not have DEET and are made with citronella or eucalyptus oil.
3. Feeding and Hydration Items to Carry
When you are travelling with a baby, it is important to be cautious about feeding them, since food contamination is more likely during the monsoon. These are some items you should keep for safe feeding.
Sterilised Feeding Bottles or Sippy Cups
Pre-sterilise both feeding bottles and sippy cups and pack them in their own separate pouches. You should always have at least two clean bottles if your baby drinks formula or breastmilk from a bottle on a long journey.
Boiled and Cooled Water in Spill-Proof Flasks
Carry your water in spill-proof bottles that are filled with boiled and cooled water. The temperature in these flasks is maintained, which helps avoid the growth of bacteria. Avoid sharing your baby’s bottle with anyone. Use one baby bottle just for the baby and make sure it is labelled.
Ready-to-Eat Baby Food or Fruit Pouches
Pack ready-to-eat baby food jars, fruit pouches, or homemade purees in insulated containers. Go for brands you trust, and check expiry dates before leaving. Also include a small spoon, bib, and cleaning cloth.
4. Baby Gear That’s Travel-Friendly
A big part of smooth monsoon travel with babies is choosing gear that’s light, compact, and weather-resistant. The goal is to stay mobile without compromising on comfort or protection.
Foldable Stroller with Rain Shield
A foldable stroller becomes your best friend during monsoon trips. It saves your arms and keeps your baby cosy during strolls, airport transfers, or even long queues. Choose a lightweight model with easy one-hand folding and ample under-storage.
Baby Carrier with Weather Protection
Pick Baby Carrier that offers back and shoulder support and is made from breathable, water-resistant material. Some high-end carriers even come with weather shields or hoods that keep your baby's head covered during unexpected drizzles.
Soft Travel Blanket and Pillow
A soft travel blanket and a mini pillow ensure they sleep comfortably, no matter where you are. Choose a blanket that is lightweight yet warm; fleece or microfiber materials are ideal as they dry quickly and resist mildew.
Things to Avoid Carrying in Monsoon
When travelling during monsoon, less is more, but smarter is best. Avoid anything that becomes heavy, soggy, or unsafe due to rain.
Heavy Baby Clothes That Retain Moisture
Pack light layers; a combo of inner vests, quick-dry tees, and a light jacket works better. These dry faster, are easier to wash in emergencies, and can be worn or removed depending on the weather.
Open Food That Spoils Quickly
Avoid packing open food items like cut fruits, fresh milk, or homemade meals unless stored in proper insulated containers. The humid environment accelerates bacterial growth, leading to - food poisoning or stomach infections.
Non-Waterproof Bags or Gear
Always go for waterproof materials with tight closures and plastic inner linings. Also, skip the gear that does not come with a rain shield or waterproof feature.
Tips for a Comfortable Journey
Planning is only half the battle; execution is key. These little travel hacks can make your monsoon adventure smooth and fuss-free.
Choose Clean, Covered Transport Options
Always book covered and clean travel options, whether it is a cab with AC or a train coach with sealed windows. Avoid tuk-tuks or open jeeps unless you are sure about the weather.
Plan Shorter Trips with Baby Breaks
Avoid overloading your itinerary. Long hours of travel without breaks can exhaust both you and your baby. Instead, plan short, manageable segments with enough buffer time.
Use Breathable Layers for Temperature Shifts
Monsoon weather is unpredictable; one moment it is chilly, and the next it’s humid and sticky. That is why layering is essential. Dress your baby in 2-3 light, breathable layers that can be added or removed based on the temperature.
R for Rabbit Travel Essentials for Monsoon
When quality and safety matter, brands like R for Rabbit have got you covered. Their monsoon-friendly travel essentials are a smart choice for young families on the go.

How Cold Rooms Work: Understanding the Cooling Mechanism
Have you ever opened the door to a cold room and instantly felt that chill in the air?
It’s more than just a blast of cold, it’s a perfectly controlled environment working hard behind the scenes to keep your food fresh, your medicines safe, or your flowers blooming.
Tumblr media
Cold rooms are an essential part of industries like food, pharma, chemicals, and agriculture. But what really goes on inside those insulated walls?
Let’s break it down in simple terms so you can understand how these chilly spaces keep things cool.
So, what exactly is a cold room?
Think of a cold room as a super-sized refrigerator or even a walk-in freezer, depending on the setup. It’s a dedicated space designed to maintain low temperatures, typically ranging from -30°C to +10°C.
Whether it’s a small room for a restaurant or a massive chamber for storing harvested fruits, cold rooms help keep temperature-sensitive products in top shape for longer.
The Main Components That Make It Work
To really get what makes a cold room tick, you’ve got to know about its key parts. Here’s a quick walkthrough:
Tumblr media
1. Insulated Panels
The walls, ceiling, and floor of a cold room are made from insulated panels, usually filled with polyurethane foam (PUF).
These panels keep the cold in and the heat out. Think of them like the thick walls of a thermos flask.
2. Refrigeration Unit
This is the heart of the operation. It includes a few key components
Compressor – Kind of like a pump that moves refrigerant through the system.
Condenser – Gets rid of the heat the refrigerant picks up from inside the room.
Expansion Valve – Helps drop the pressure of the refrigerant so it can cool down.
Evaporator Coil – Where the actual cooling magic happens inside the room.
These parts work together to keep the cold room nice and chilly.
3. Temperature Controller
Whether digital or manual, this device lets you set and monitor the temperature.
It also tells the system when to turn on or off based on what’s needed to stay within the set temperature range.
4. Air Circulation Fans
Fans are essential; they move the cold air around so the temperature stays even throughout the room.
Without them, you'd get warm and cold spots, which could ruin stored products.
5. Lighting & Safety Features
Modern cold rooms often have LED lighting, alarms for temperature changes, and emergency release buttons inside, just in case someone gets locked in.
How the Cooling Cycle Works (In Simple Steps)
Now, let’s walk through the step-by-step cooling process. It’s similar to how your fridge works—just on a much larger scale!
Tumblr media
Step 1: Compression
First, the compressor sucks in refrigerant gas (which is low-pressure and warm) from the evaporator.
It then compresses it into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas. This is the start of the cycle.
Step 2: Condensation
That hot, high-pressure gas moves to the condenser, which is typically located outside the cold room.
As fans blow air across it, the gas cools down and turns into a high-pressure liquid.
Step 3: Expansion
Next, the liquid refrigerant travels through an expansion valve. This is where the magic starts: the pressure drops rapidly, and the refrigerant becomes super cold, part liquid, part vapor.
Step 4: Evaporation
This cold refrigerant goes into the evaporator coil inside the cold room. A fan blows warm room air across the coil.
The refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air, which causes it to evaporate and turn back into a gas.
As it takes the heat out of the air, the temperature inside the room drops.
Step 5: Repeat
That now warm, low-pressure refrigerant gas goes back to the compressor, and the whole process starts again.
This cycle runs continuously to keep the room at your desired temperature.
Types of Refrigerants Used
Not all cold rooms use the same kind of refrigerant. The choice depends on factors like cooling needs, safety standards, and environmental regulations. Here are a few commonly used ones:
R404A – Popular for low- and medium-temperature cold rooms.
R134a – Often found in commercial cold storage setups.
Ammonia (R717) – Highly efficient and widely used in industrial cold rooms.
R290 (Propane) and CO₂ (R744) – These are eco-friendly options gaining popularity as greener alternatives.
Why Understanding the Cooling Mechanism Matters
You don’t need to be a refrigeration technician to appreciate how cold rooms work, but understanding the basics helps.
It can help business owners make informed decisions about installation, maintenance, and even choosing the right cold room size or technology for their operations.
Plus, when things go wrong—like temperature fluctuations or frost build-up—you’ll have a better idea of what could be causing it and how to talk to your service provider about a fix.
Final Thoughts
Cold rooms may seem simple on the outside, but they’re powered by a precise system that works 24/7 to keep things cold, fresh, and safe.
Whether you're storing dairy products, vaccines, or fresh produce, that consistent chill is made possible by an efficient cycle of compression, condensation, expansion, and evaporation.
Now that you understand the cooling mechanism behind a cold room, you’ll never look at one the same way again!
