I was really excited to post this set of STAR WARS recs because it contained some of my favorite fics of recent times and there are some fics in the fandom that are SO INCREDIBLY GOOD, it’s a marvel to me that every time I feel like things are slowing down, I remember there’s this other fic that makes me want to yell at the top of my lungs to fandom about how much I loved it and then there’s that other one, too! It’s the best kind of problem to have, to feel like there’s so much fic I want to yell about and how satisfying some of them can be! That this post got so long because I just had so much I wanted to flail about! Gen or Platonic

Your Love Alone by dimtraces :: G :: 300 words Author’s summary:  Savage loves the idea of a brother, and Maul the affection he can't accept or refuse. That's why it works. Why I’m reccing it: It seems that I’m likely to start off every list with dimtraces. Or at least the first few.  But this story packs a hell of a punch for being as short as it is. My own opinion: No one handles Savage the way dimtraces does.  I know I’ve probably said that before, but the sheer weight of the tragedy to befall that Nightbrother often gets overlooked, and it’s good to have an author out there who’s willing to take an unflinching look at it, and to his relationship with Maul.  Because they were brothers, onscreen.  They acted like brothers.  And it did go both ways, which was frankly the only kind relationship Maul had in his adult life to that point, and maybe overall.  So, even for three hundred words, it’s all there.  Love and tragedy.

Fearful Symmetry by skywalker05/Nemonus :: T :: 44K, 21 chapters :: complete, on FF.net Author’s summary:  In which Obi-Wan's death on Tatooine and Qui-Gon's reluctant gain of a new and sinister apprentice lead the Jedi Council to take an action not seen since the time of Revan. Darth Maul's memory may be lost, but can the Jedi truly remake him? Why I’m reccing it: It’s a fairly long, thoughtful story.  It also doesn’t shy away from some of the measures the Jedi Council is willing to go to in order to neutralize a threat or get what they want.  Some of the imagery is terrific.  And it’ll make your heart ache at points. My own opinion: Nemonus’s characterization is never not fascinating, even when I don’t always agree with it.  Even when I don’t, though, there’s a lot of care and thought put into their writing, so it’s never a wasted effort to read it and there’s a lot to think about afterwards.  This story was written before the Dathomir connection came into play, so Maul’s backstory is inconsistent, but there was such care in extrapolating one anyway that it doesn’t matter.  I have a weakness for Maul and Qui-Gon interacting, which might seem odd when you hear me complain about Qui-Gon Jinn, but there you have it.  And in this story, both his good traits and his less-good ones get time onscreen.  And Maul’s confusion and attempts to deal with being yanked in two different directions is well done.  You firmly get a sense of how young and lost he is, and I genuinely love the fact that when given an out -- even if both he and I agree that it was an awful violation -- something in him remains strong enough to take it on its own merits regardless of how he got there.  This is probably the best story Nemonus has for taking emotional risks while writing Maul, so I definitely recommend it.

Sith Apprentice: Darth Venge by Mengde :: T-M :: 209K+, 17 stories :: in progress Author’s summary: What if Qui-Gon Jinn had been there to accept Maul from his mother on Dathomir? What if, then, Sidious had taken on a young man named Kenobi as his Sith apprentice? Why I’m reccing it: This one’s a case of Maul not being the primary character, but having such a decent secondary role that it’s worthy of being rec’d on a list for him.  This is one long, complicated, interesting series, mostly focusing on the premise above and how much actually changes in that case.  If you like Sith!Obi-Wan and Jedi!Maul, here’s a great set of tales that will entertain like whoa. My own opinion: It’s definitely fascinating how the author interprets a Jedi-raised Maul.  He seems most like himself early on, when he’s young and still a bit wild-hearted, but even if he becomes quite stoically serene later in the series, it’s not hard to extrapolate why from the text.  Special mention has to be given to the downright adorable way that Maul and Anakin interact, having both been padawans to Qui-Gon Jinn; they seem very brotherly, and it’s freaking wonderful when they play off each other and Qui-Gon.  The fact that Maul ends up as master to Ahsoka Tano doesn’t hurt things, either, especially since her sense of humor and his seems to dovetail nicely.  His interactions with Obi-Wan -- well, just Kenobi or Venge in this timeline -- are also a treat; they needle one another, but they also respect one another.  So, if you’d like to read Jedi!Maul, who is every bit as badass as his original incarnation but a heck of a lot more... well, Jedi!  Then you can’t go wrong here.  (And the Order seems to have sorted some of their shit out, which also doesn’t hurt things.)

Wrath and Loyalty by editoress :: T :: 9800+, five chapters :: Unfinished Author’s summary: Sidious suffers the consequences for breaking the Rule of Two: he loses his apprentice. But the attack that was supposed to kill young Maul takes an unexpected turn when a Mandalorian makes off with him instead. Now Maul, Savage, and Feral will face their pasts. Why I’m reccing it: I’m a sucker for any AU where someone gets Maul out of Sid’s clutches early enough for him to build a life and become a reasonably well-adjusted adult.  And this one has some great interactions and characterizations, especially of the three Nightbrothers and their adoptive family. My own opinion: I’m pretty tepid when it comes to the Mandalorians, honestly, because I just-- am.  But in this case, it seems that it’s a very good fit.  Feral’s adorable and sort of wise-cracking, which is a nice take on him.  Savage is more solid and responsible.  And Maul is quite thoughtful and quiet, both traits which are very him; a certain solemness that it’s no trouble seeing him carry from timeline to timeline.  A lot of stories tend to make him a sarcastic critter -- legacy of the Sith Academy stories, I can pretty much guarantee it -- but in almost all canon and Legends material, Maul’s not actually very sarcastic at all.  Once in a rare while does he deploy that (and that when he’s much older).  Beyond the characterization, the plot’s breathless; it’s a pity it hasn’t been updated in over a year, because the cliffhanger it’s left on is one that makes the ready go oh crap.  But maybe if interest spikes, the author will pick it up again, because this is a terrific, well-paced, fascinating AU and I’d love to see where it goes.

The main idea is that Gríma used and embellished an old story about a King fucking a Witch so well from sundown to sunrise without break & thus binding her (heart) so that for all his reign she ensured good harvest. and an old and disused fertility custom based on it. to lie his way into Théoden's court and bed. as the witch, Gríma was also somewhat protected during the whole betrayal scheme since to banish him could have curdled the very earth. in some tales.

Théoden still dies on the Pelennor hills.

Young King Éomer returns, and invokes the Witch tale that Gríma once told--- and Gríma must figure out whether it's another chance to secure his place in court or whether Éomer plans to humiliate and ruin him in a long night of public sex, where the King may call stand-ins to keep the Witch busy while he regains his breath and erection

thinking out loud about a bit of the Éowyn's Got a Band AU, which is mostly a series of éomer/gríma bdsm pwps with was too much background and plot. anyway. here be spoilers about backstory and central arc

gríma wanted everything--- especially, money, rock star fame, adoration, love, once upon a time when he was younger and started hooking up with recent widower & current rising star théoden and then finagled his way into becoming théoden's band's manager, and then once another tragedy struck théoden and he adopted his teenage nephew and niece too, living fulltime either with théoden and the kids on the road (théodred is in the band but only a little older than éomer so gríma is asked to watch him too sometimes), or staying behind with éowyn and éomer in théoden's house for all intents and purposes the stepmom (as is my perpetual agenda, wicked stepmother gríma) except he's only the band manager. théoden never opens up about the relationship to anyone. [*] gríma encourages this because he thinks that it will gain him more leverage that he can use to make théoden launch gríma's music career.

which never happens. gríma's growing resentment towards théoden--- and during the course of trying to make the man beholden to him, gríma's home his money his life it all depends on théoden--- well, gríma used drugs casually while he was cruising before he met théoden but now he finds the White Wizard and gets *hooked*. and then gríma gets théodred hooked.

revenge, another scheme, something else--- even in the court room this never gets settled. and it ends in court, because théodred overdoses. gríma, who supplied the White Wizard, goes to jail for a long time. no one visits. why would they? they were all théoden's family and friends or théoden himself who dies of the grief.

fast forward! end backstory! we are now in the time of the pwp series. yadda yadda, gríma left prison more fucked up than he entered it and never found his sea legs, and it's winter now and cold and he found a flyer for éowyn's new band and goes in order to beg for money for a room for maybe a week it's so cold, éomer finds him first and that old attraction rears its head and so does éomer yearning the loss of all his family (éomer is in the course of trying to reconcile with his sister after another massive fight) and so he offers gríma his own spare room and sleeper sofa.

yadda yadda more parts i will write longform of éomer and or gríma working thru many issues through such media as cbd, 24/7 puppy play, watersports, control and trust and pain, etc etc

the flatshare works, though it's not balanced (insert parallels to gríma's relationship with théoden here) and gríma's severely depressed and éomer is lying to his therapist and famiy and friends but eh, swings and roundabouts.

éowyn visits. she sees: gríma, killer of her family, sleeping on the sofa, and calls the police. back to the holding cell for gríma.

éomer would not have admitted any of this under his own choice. but unlike théoden then, he's not a rock star with a family, he's a lonely man in a job he doesn't care much about bc it's not music but he couldn't follow in théoden's shoes, with a girlfriend he was never honest about in terms of his desirs and that he's been cheating on for months, and so he goes down to the station and blows up his old life and says: he was allowed on that sofa. he's my boyfriend. he's mine.

gríma's always committed all of himself to another. this time he's claimed back.

[*] éomer knows which is how the audience knows bc most of the series so far is planned in his pov. he knows bc he's 16 and fantasizing about punishing the git that his uncle's left him with, that mocking asshole who makes him do all his homework and latin too (while gríma doesn't even listen to éomer's presentations that he forced but does band manager stuff at the same time. prick.) éomer fantasizes about pushing the band manager slash nanny around and hurting him and he's very into it and then horrified, repeat, as he fails to come to terms with sexual sadism. and because he--- does not, and won't for a long time, conceive of that as a crush, he spies on gríma and finds out that théoden is fucking him. cue more guilt. all this is also why he never told éowyn that they were an item.

trying not to think about it rn bc it's for part 2 of bride of rohan and i need to finish pt 1!! no distracted thoughts!!! only focus on pt 1!!!!! but gríma's default path in pt 2 of the story is becoming queen of rohan while at the same time he's been trying to place himself as éomer's confidante and advisor also and any confidante worth their salt would take 1) kings need heirs 2) éomer reluctantly agreed to marriage bc he knows he needs heirs 3) gríma is an eunuch and the marriage was a scheme and he will bear nor sire children, and go, we need to figure sth else out. but he's also greedy. and to become queen.....

Éomer will bear it with honour, and never shall the wish pass his lips that his sister instead had fought less against marriage to the White Wizard’s apprentice. At least she’d met Gríma Wormtongue. Met him for months in fact as he stayed at Meduseld to fail countless attempts at wooing her. He was a— the polite term is interesting fellow. Pale as bone and song-spoken though deep in his words lay barbs. Far more adept at politics than Éomer expected of a wizard’s helpmeet. He hailed from northernmost Rohan and travelled far before arriving at Orthanc, he’d said. He bragged of all he’s learned from his wise teacher. Éowyn called him a creep.

This new bride is unknown. Théoden-King had raged at his niece for her stubborn refusal, pressed Éomer into explaining the importance of this alliance to his sister. She was of royal stock: she should have known that not her heart would lead her life but duty. Still, she said no. Gríma returned to the White Wizard. A year later now, this offer. A new bride, a new covenant, and Éomer is not his sister. If Éomer is unhappy, none but himself shall know.

Two days ago, he drank with his Éored for the last time a free man.

Yesterday, he spewed into his chamber pot.

Today he wears his best and makes his way down the stairs of Edoras to the place where his new bride awaits. Had Éomer dreams for the face of his wife— he does not, for reasons all his own— he might have felt the sting of disappointment during his approach, for there is no face to be seen, just white and white and white. Veils, many of them. They’re hiding even her dress. It’s hard to tell there’s a living thing inside.

six some sentences sunday monday

the king lindworm gríma fic again (au, gríma is saruman's apprentice and sent to rohan for a year to seal marriage between him and éowyn to further saruman's conquest plans. gríma fails because éowyn loathes him. the fic takes place a year later)

“Give me gold,” says the bride, pulling roughly at the next veil. “Rohan is not Gondor, but you have glimmers of worth. Rings, bracelets, suchlike. Costly embroidery. Your sister has a gold dress pin she never wears.”

Another veil falls. “Your sister may not kill me.”

“She doesn’t care for the pin, nor for any other gift I’ve given.” Éomer thinks he knows which pin she means. He gave Éowyn that pin as apology when she wouldn’t talk to him for a month. Thirteen she must have been. He’d not done anything wrong, merely reminded her not to rip her dresses rough-housing, but in her youth she took every word of his wrong and truly still does. The hope was then that the pin might steer her towards beauty as was proper though like everything else the gift hadn’t convinced either. But how would his bride know—

Talk of Éowyn as such isn’t suspicious. She was first intended to wed for the alliance. She’s a member of the royal house. She rejected Gríma Wormtongue, and the man is a nursery of grudges. Once shortly before he was sent back, Gríma sought to spin the whole table a tale of her more than sisterly regard for Éomer. This, while sat three chairs from him. So deep so deep in his drinks was Gríma shortly before the sunrise. Éomer who’d matched cup for cup failed to use his sword in the correct way and so Gríma’s life was spared.

Maybe Gríma told Éomer’s future bride that the only satisfaction his sister and he ever found was in each other. He’s an awful man. He would.
