I'm trying to get myself back into writing by doing some little things here and there. This is the first one that is actually worth it to post here lol
Awhile back I asked on discord for suggestions of things I could write and then for a long time I didn't actually do anything lol BUT I finally did something. This ficlet is based on a suggestion @abbeyofcyn gave me about Donnie feeling anxiety over a having a new home post S2 (at least I remember it being Cyn but the message is so old now I can't find it orz I'm sorry if it was someone else)
I hope you enjoy it!
---
The subway station has been closed to the public since the nineties. Most of the ways in are already blocked off, and it will be trivial to finish that work to keep out any intruders. The tracks and maintenance station make an ideal garage and workspace for the tank. The old electrical wiring and water pipes are easily accessible. There’s still functioning toilets in the old bathrooms, and ventilated spaces ideal for cooking. There’s easy access to the street, the rest of the subway system, and the sewers. Splinter hums approvingly as he circles an old staff area with a tape measure. His brothers shout as they call dibs on rusted out train cars. April enthusiastically notes that the station is close to her new campus.
It checks all the boxes on their list, and then some.
So why has the sick feeling in the pit of Donnie’s stomach gotten worse instead of better?
There must be something wrong with it. Some flaw they aren’t seeing, some con they haven’t considered. He needs to go over his lists again; double check and triple check from every angle. They’ve only been here an hour - it would just be irresponsible to make a decision so quickly!
He desperately fires up his tablet again and pulls up his list, scrolling with hard taps as his eyes fly over the compiled criteria. There must be something… Something!
It’s structurally sound. There’s ample space for skateboard ramps and arcade machines. There’s plenty of lighting that will only need simple maintenance to be functional. There’s a big space that can be used for a new lab. It checks all the boxes, but there must be at least one it’s not checking, or why would Donnie’s blood curdle at the thought of actually living here?
The way the air moves through the space is wrong. The way the sounds echo off the walls and floors is unfamiliar. The smell is not the one he spent his whole life inhaling. It’s all wrong in a way that embeds itself in Donnie’s very skin, leaves him feeling slimy and nauseous and off kilter, like everything was just tilted at a dutch angle.
He scrolls to the bottom of the list and taps a few more times to be sure. “Air feels right” and “Echoes are normal” and “Smell is bad” are not boxes to be checked, so it can’t be any of those things. It has to be something else… It has to be something!
He scrolls back to the top of his list. Then he scrolls back to the bottom. He can’t find it. But it has to be there.
“Whoa,” says Leo, and Donnie jolts, his head snapping up. “I’ve never seen Donnie look like he wants to murder a computer before.”
“Please don’t tell Raph that something’s wrong with the structural checks or whatever,” says Raph, just behind Leo. They’re all coming up to him, probably wondering why he’s been standing in the same spot for…
Donnie glances at his screen and jolts again. Twenty four minutes and thirty seven second!?
“Come on, Dee, this place has got to be perfect,” says Leo. “I already know exactly where I’m putting my action figures in my new digs!”
“And I’m already getting sooo many ideas for graffiti!” says Mikey excitedly, bouncing in place where he stands next to April. “And I can’t wait to design the kitchen layout! I can’t believe I get to start from scratch and do it just how I want!”
“Raph already knows exactly where the dojo is goin’,” Raph joins in. When Leo blows a raspberry, Raph pushes him forward and smirks when he has to catch himself.
“I think this is the best you guys are gonna get,” says April. “Unless you wanna move to the Hidden City.”
“We can’t, Raph still has a warrant for his arrest.”
“I keep tellin’ you guys, that ain’t Raph!”
“I only wish I had known about this place earlier,” comes Splinter’s voice as he joins them. “So much square footage!”
They all start talking excitedly, so fast it blends into a whir in Donnie’s ears. They’ve all already decided, but don’t they see? They can’t live here, because it’s wrong!
“No.”
Donnie’s declaration kills the conversation in its tracks. Everyone stops to look at him, and the sudden attention doesn’t feel as good as it might otherwise.
“No,” he repeats, shaking his head and looking back at his list. “This won’t work.”
A chorus of “What!?” comes from everyone else. Donnie keeps his eyes on his list, scrolling frantically, looking for the problem that he knows is there.
“Is there something wrong with it?” asks April, tone measured.
“Yes,” he says, but doesn’t elaborate, because he doesn’t know what it is yet and how can he answer if he doesn’t have any data?
It’s clear they aren’t going to wait for him to come up with the answer.
“Well what is it? Ventilation? Structural integrity? The wiring? Come on, Dee, give us somethin’.”
“It’s… it’s just wrong. I know it is.” Donnie looks up from his list then, and their skeptical expressions make him coil around his tablet in defense. “We’ve barely seen all of it! How can we know for certain that it will really suit our needs?”
He’s protesting too much, and it’s no surprise when Leo catches on, immediately narrowing his eyes as he hones in on Donnie’s uncertainty.
“You’ve said no to every place we’ve looked at, dude! Are your standards that high, or do you just like living in Barry’s crappy apartment that much?”
“I obviously do not,” Donnie snaps, because he has made no secret of the fact that he hates it there. Sure, it was nice of Draxum to take them in now that they’re homeless and all that, but the apartment is too small, and the sheets are too scratchy, and the way the air conditioner sounds is all wrong, and the street noises bother Donnie at night…
Of course he doesn’t want to keep living there! He never wanted to live there in the first place!
“Then what’s the problem?” Leo asks, folding his arms, and Donnie scowls back.
“I just think we shouldn’t rush into such a big decision just because it sucks to live in Draxum’s apartment,” he reasons, reasonably because he’s being very reasonable!
“And what, wait for our realtor to find us a few more listings?” Leo says with heavy snark.
“Leo,” says Raph with a warning tone, before looking back at Donnie. “Look, we can take tonight to think about it,” he suggests. “But if there’s nothing really wrong with it, I think this is gonna be the best we can do.”
Donnie shrinks back. “You say we’ll take tonight to think about it, but you’ve all already decided.” He shakes his head. “But I’m telling you, we can’t live here. It’s wrong.”
“Donnie…” Mikey’s hand touches Donnie’s elbow, and it takes everything in him not to jerk it away. “Is there an actual problem with the place, or is this a feelings problem?”
Donnie jerks away.
Then he turns and sprints away down the nearest subway tunnel.
…
He only makes it to the next condemned platform before he collapses against the wall, panting. Maybe he really should take up Raph’s advice to do more cardio… If he can ever face any of them again, that is.
He sinks to the ground and rests his chin on his knees, looking around at the unfamiliar scenery. He knew the old tunnels of his home like he knew the curves and grooves in his favorite wrench. But his favorite wrench is lost forever under an insurmountable amount of rubble, and the tunnels around him are foreign and imposing.
He doesn’t want to live in Draxum’s apartment anymore.
But he doesn’t want to live here.
He wants to go home.
The ugly, bitter feeling in his stomach twists again, and he groans and presses his face into his knees, covering his head with his arms. He knows exactly what would fix this, and it’s something he can’t have.
He did the tests himself, over and over again. He knows that their old home would take years, decades to make livable again. They simply can’t fix it. It’s too big to be fixed.
Which means he cannot be fixed.
The understanding that he’ll feel this way forever washes over Donnie, leaving him desolated. How is he ever supposed to function again?
How can the rest of his family move on so easily when he’s still like this?
Footsteps echo off the walls, and he tenses up, curling tighter into himself. It’s no surprise that one of them came after him. He’s just glad it’s only one set of footsteps, and not five.
He doesn’t look up as they draw close. He doesn’t have to. A barefooted tread, light and airy with a bit of a hop to it even when the mood is somber. He’d know it anywhere.
Mikey plops down next to him and says, “Ready to talk to Doctor Feelings?”
Donnie shakes his head without looking up.
Mikey hums. “Wanna talk to Doctor Delicate Touch?”
Donnie shakes his head harder.
There’s a shuffle, and then warmth against Donnie’s side. “Wanna talk to your favorite little brother in the whole wide world?”
Donnie finally lifts his head enough to look at Mikey with one eye. “Winning by default isn’t something to brag about,” he notes.
A huge grin crosses Mikey’s face. “Hey, there you are!”
“Here I am,” Donnie notes dryly, and it sounds miserable even to his own ears.
Mikey’s expression falls into something more soft. He scoots around to Donnie’s front, then says, “You’re homesick.”
Homesick feels too small for the dark feelings that are swallowing Donnie whole. It’s just not enough.
“...I don’t want to live somewhere new,” he says, and it sounds like, I don’t want everything to be different.
“Yeah, it’s a lot,” says Mikey, even though Donnie knows he can’t be feeling it like this, or at least hopes his little brother isn’t. “You’ll get used to it, though!”
It almost makes Donnie laugh. He can’t begin to imagine it ever feeling anything but terrible. “How do you know?”
“Because I have experience,” says Mikey breezily, like it’s obvious.
Donnie hopes the skepticism shows on his face. “Really? Micheal, we were both too young when Papa moved us to the lair.”
“Yeah, I don’t remember that. But I do remember when we all got our own rooms!”
Donnie considers that with some surprise. He vaguely remembers that… mostly because he was happy that Raph and Leo couldn’t put their stuff on his side anymore. “Ah yes. A joyous day for all of us.”
“Well it wasn’t too happy for me!” Mikey retorts, folding his arms. “I didn’t want any of us to get our own rooms. I… wasn’t ready to be without you guys.”
Actually, now that Mikey says that, Donnie does remember that part of it. “I also remember that you weren’t without us, because you slept in one of our rooms every night for two months.”
Mikey nods seriously. “Yeah! Because I wasn’t ready for change!”
“And we had to make a rotating chart so that each of us could get a full night of sleep once in a while.”
“Huh?” Mikey pouts. “What do you mean? I sleep like an angel!”
“Kicking and chewing on anything in grabbing distance seems more like demon behavior,” Donnie notes, and Mikey huffs and makes a big show of being offended.
“The point, Donald,” he stresses, “is that it was a big change! And I wasn’t happy about it for a loooong time.” He leans back. “I didn’t get why you guys were so happy about moving out when I wasn’t. It felt like you were all leaving me behind.”
Donnie frowns. “But we were literally a few feet away,” he notes. “As you proved nightly.”
Mikey points at him excitedly. “Exactly! It was a big change, but I still had you guys. And eventually, you guys helped me get excited about it, too.”
Donnie tries to remember what exactly they did to accomplish that, but… “All I remember is that we helped you hang up your finger paintings and put glow in the dark stickers on the ceiling.”
“Yep!” Mikey nods sagely. “You helped make it my own. I got where I was excited to be in my room, because it was how I wanted it to be!” He falters, tapping his chin. “And also I remember Leo said something about all my toys being sad if they were alone in my room at night…”
“Ah. Manipulative tactics,” Donnie observes.
“But that’s not the point! The point is that when I made it my own, change wasn’t so scary anymore.” He waves back down the tunnel. “And that’s what’s going to work for you, too! Because you’re going to build yourself a big new lab and decorate your room just how you want it, and you’re going to love it!”
Donnie feels absolutely no confidence in that. The idea of building a new lab, of decorating his room, of getting used to the new space, doesn’t fill him with excitement. There is only dread there, and exhaustion, and an insurmountable realization that nothing is ever going to be the same as it was before.
“That might work for you,” he says softly, tiredly. “But I don’t think it will for me. I don’t think I will ever stop feeling…”
He still doesn’t know what to call this.
“...Homesick.”
“But you will,” says Mikey, putting a hand on his arm. This time, Donnie doesn’t jerk away. “You know how I know?”
“How?”
“Because you went through it with the rooms too, Dee.”
Donnie scoffs, shaking his head. “I was glad to have my own room,” he asserts. “The rest of you kept getting your things into my space. It was annoying.”
“Sure, maybe you were happy about that part,” says Mikey simply, “but do you remember the big storm? The first one after we moved into our rooms, that was sooo loud we could hear it?”
Again, Donnie thinks he vaguely recalls something like that. It clearly didn’t leave as large an impression on him as it did on Mikey, though.
“I… might,” he says.
“I remember,” says Mikey, “that I was so scared, I ran straight to Raph’s room! And he was already awake, and he was under the covers, and we made a tent together.” He giggles. “And then you came in, and then Leo! And I realized then, maybe you guys weren’t really as happy about sleeping in separate rooms as I thought.”
He shifts around again, pressing himself into Donnie’s side.
“We went through that all together. And we’re gonna go through this together, too. And that’s how I know it’ll be okay!”
Donnie can’t help but make a skeptical noise. He’s not sure it will be. It just feels like too much.
“We’re all homesick, too,” Mikey confides. “We show it different than you… But we are. We’re going through it with you.”
Donnie knows they miss home, too. He knows that. But still…
“What if you’re wrong,” he says, “and it’s not okay?”
“Then…” Mikey trails off, thinking. “Then I’ll use the money I saved up to buy you that limited edition Atomic Lass figure you wanted!”
Donnie twists his head to stare at him. “That figure currently values at eight hundred and fifty dollars,” he says.
Mikey grimaces. “I will give you all the money I have saved up to help you buy it!” he amends.
Donnie snorts. Then he laughs. Then he leans into the warmth of his little brother.
He doesn’t want to live somewhere new… but it won’t be entirely new. His family will still be there. Just a few steps away.
“Does the laughing mean you’ll come back with me?” asks Mikey. “Because this tunnel is cold.”
Donnie snorts again. “I will go back with you,” he agrees, “because I actually don’t have a choice in the matter.”
“Yes! I did it!” Mikey hops to his feet, extending a hand. “Another W for Doctor Feelings!”
“Winning by default is nothing to brag about,” says Donnie again. But he takes Mikey’s hand, and they go back to the station together.

New website is up!
Finally, after like 2 months: I finished it!
I never want to touch HTML ever again.
Here it is:
I thought I should do a little commentary here as it isn't just some standard linktree/carrd.co thing anyone with a free afternoon can crap out (and also because I'm vain) so here's the commentary:
The problem with my old one was that it was getting too crowded for all the stuff I was chucking at it. I mean, look at this header:
It's a mess!
I wanted to make something that had everything in nice neat categories, and also this was in a time where I was unsatisfied at how flat UI design had become and was starting to long the futiger aero windows XP-7 days. I wanted to make it look detailed and shiny and more personal. I deleted everything off and for 2 months, this was what the website looked like:
(I didn't have a more up to date "under construction" picture so I used the one from Sci-Fi RaiRoboska!?).
I didn't realise it would take 2 months but I didn't want a repeat of last time where I was talking on discord with someone and they were looking at my website as I was designing it as I was doing it live in Neocities and I left the link in my bio.
I used the same layout builder as I still didn't know how containers worked then. It ended up causing some problems later down the line with media querys (FUCK media querys) but it's decent enough to get you started. I did some fiddling with the header so it was the right length (dear god that took a while) and had to do that airbrush thing multiple times just to get it looking right.
I drew this background at around the same time and used my OCs from San_Watsaku as it's my latest game and I don't really have another group of OCs from a game that's released. Annoyingly, I couldn't get the sizing to work on a regular 1080p widescreen display so the top and bottom cuts out. I was trying to go for a similar approach to how Newgrounds does the background arts.
I had a wayback machine page of Newgrounds in 2013 in the early days as reference on how to make things look cool, as well as some pages from this website that has a collection of screenshots of webpages, specifically for UI reference. I was trying to make it look like a website from the late 2000s-early 2010s where everything wasn't flat but also wasn't as shiny as windows 7 (usually).
I put little doodles of myself across the pages because it looks more interesting than a flat button saying "video games". That sidebar is annoying though as it has a habit of cutting off if the main box isn't the right shape by the pixel.
I was very proud of these buttons when I got them working. The design changed a bit as I realised that it needed to be longer to fit properly.
Wasn't sure what to do with tumblr though:
I used a speech bubble drawing for my bio thing to make it look more aesthetic and also to flex that I didn't use AI at all as AI can't replicate my shaky-ass hand. I found this file called "avocadoplaceholder.jpg" which seems to be what I was using to figure out sizing.

For the stuff below the main boxes, I googled for stuff to chuck on a neocities page as it was too boring just having the bluesky embed sitting there. I went on the gif hunt at 11 pm while some AI bro on discord was calling me an idiot for actually coding and drawing the UI. I put some other stuff to pad space, like the pixel art and the links to my older websites. I added some stuff to it over time, like the interests list and the music section once I finally figured out how to get audio players working (literally earlier today lol). I wanted to add music for each page but decided against that. I wanted music on the main page though but couldn't for the life of me get it to work until I was trying to add a preloader (didn't work) and the website I was on was another neocities one that had an audio player but had the "neocities.org" thing in the URL so I knew they weren't a supporter. I went into inspect element and figured out that dropbox works and that's why I now have a dropbox account. Couldn't find a tutorial on how to make it not look basic though, so all I did was make it shorter and blue.
I made unique backgrounds for each of the pages to differentiate them and I made these from scratch as I actually figured out how containers and grids worked.
And of course: matching headers:
For each page: there's a doodle of me doing something vaguely relevant to the topic, little circles as links for the socials I have that apply to that thing (Newgrounds is on all of them and YouTube is on 3/4 of them.) I then used that speech bubble thing to make backgrounds for all the little bios. The music one was originally much longer but I cut it down significantly so it would fit. I used the empty spaces for doodles.
continuing...

WHAT?!
150 followers is a huge milestone I never expected to hit. Thank you so much to everyone who's followed and made the blog the success it's become! Not only has it seen enormous growth in the two weeks since I created it, but the link to the ask box even got pinned in the official BK Discord server by Kyle himself. How cool is that?
In other news, the desktop theme had to be changed, as the Youtube embeds on each post were doing some funky things with the layout that made it hard to read each post. I don't have the technical knowledge to fix that, so I had to go hunting for a new theme. I believe the new one has mitigated the issue, but if any of you have trouble with it, please let me know!
#bkc mod post#Not gonna lie. There's a temptation to change this blog's title to 'Kyle Crouse Approved!'#I won't... but the temptation is there.

2024 Celebration and Recap!
I have never been so excited to celebrate the end of a year. 2024 was far and away the most challenging year of my life, and there is an ENORMOUS amount to show for it!😤
In addition to the strides made with the demo's development for Catalyst: Blind Faith, hundreds of thousands of words written and edited for the full game, and a staggering amount of progress on art and animations, we've had an avalanche of community support. MANY innovations in accessibility were made possible by the Ren'Py community and our Discord's killer members too!
It took me several days just to organize this recap, due to the astonishing amount that was accomplished. I could not have done a fraction of this much work without the love and support of my partner and CBF's producer (I love you Gob <3), the entirety of the legends in Just Write Studios, and all of you who have been cheering development on!!
We'll be celebrating in the community Discord on January 3rd to bring in the New Year! Whether or not you can join us then, I hope you have had happy holidays and are just as excited for 2025 as I am.
The filesize limit and link embeds on Tumblr are a little prohibitive, so I couldn't share every gif, animation, and devlog link here. You're very welcome to check out the high-res versions of all these pics, and the other gifs on my Patreon here!
Without further ado let's dive into this utterly ridiculous recap. I tried to make it easy to read but it's still a lot. I hope you enjoy!!!
ART AND ANIMATIONS
CHARACTER CONCEPTS, SHAPE LANGUAGE, AND DESIGNS ARE CEMENTED FOR:
Father Richard Anscham - Main character
Ray - Arguably actually the main character
Ofelia "Eagle-Eye" Banks - Optional party member
Celegwen - Optional party member
Lord Yech the Disgusted - Optional party member
Orgoth - Antagonist
You can read more about the extensive considerations for these characters and their shape language, silhouettes, AND MORE in this devlog here!
Over 92% of the demo’s camerawork and animations are complete!
WIP sketches are in place for all visuals, transitions, character designs, expressions, poses, and more!
Here on Patreon we have a short trailer showcasing a ton of that action for patrons at any tier! 💖
🙏 Concepts for every deity's CG in the pantheon are a WIP, I am fighting god to not spoil anything but I am very excited 🙏
And the longest animation in the demo, the timelapse near the start, is complete!
Its timing has been improved and thoroughly tested.
It can also be paused or skipped at any time!
MENUS AND ACCESSIBILITY
locked in for this one
The photosensitivity splash screen has been replaced with the Options screen immediately displaying upon first starting the game. This immediate prompt only shows when first starting the game, but the Options screen can be accessed by players from any screen at any time.
A huge visual overhaul of the Options screen and navigation has been made to improve colors, icons, and its layout for maximum clarity!
The Ren'Py Default Accessibility menu has been given a complete style overhaul, massively clarifying features. It also now matches the other menus in Catalyst: Blind Faith. 💖
Created a color picker for the high contrast text feature, with the incredible help of the Ren'Py community. This innovation in accessibility was a multi-week endeavor, that now allows players to choose their font color and contrasting background in real time, all without restarting the game!
The Content Warning, Autosave Preference, and Saves Unlocked screens have had their verbiage updated for clarity and brevity! They are also presented entirely with code, making it (and all other menus) compatible with screen readers and all other accessibility settings!
I've replaced 13 flat images used as placeholders for the chapter title screens with final code! This freed up a whopping 10MB by removing those placeholders.
Now I can display all chapter numbers, titles, and subtitles in any combination with smart interpolation of variables in parameterized text!!!
What this means for players is regardless of how you progress through the game, your chapter numbers will always accurately count up – and if any wacky time travel stuff is involved, it accounts for that neatly too!
The text in-engine also just looks so much nicer aaaa
Text tags (bold, italics, underline, etc.) now render on the History screen!
The timelapse from the prologue also now populates in the History menu!
ADDITIONALLY✨
The main menu's layout and positioning is complete! A total overhaul has been done to its buttons and animations, freeing up even MORE placeholders.
Complete revamp of the Gallery is done, using the Multi-Touch Zoom Gallery code by Feniks!
Custom navigation for the gallery has separate sections for Places, Characters, Gods, Demons, and Demo Endings.
New features in the Gallery include improved navigation, zoom (with mouse, keyboard, gamepad, or touchscreen), rotate, and a timed slideshow with auto-play.
The "Momentos" category has been cut from the gallery, as key item acquisition is now handled with the in-game screen signifying their narrative importance. They populate in the Inventory tab of the Journal menu for reference.
YOU THOUGHT I WAS DONE WITH UI BUT THE JOURNAL HAS BEEN FINISHED AND DESERVES ITS OWN SECTION
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Final assets are completed!!!!!!!!! Matching the quality, semi-realistic, and painterly style of the final release. 💪💪💪💪
Greatly improved clarity on all assets! Tons of care put into improved ease of navigation! I spent weeks on finalizing the UI design!!!! 🧠🧠🧠🧠
Navigation is now in alphabetical order, with all tabs spelled out (rather than using images alone for deities).
Bug fixed, by adding a named but previously missing asset related to events with the Goddess of Time.
The bookmarks, sub-menus, scrollbars, and all pages now remember where you last left off too. It feels amaziiiiiing
A hover image has been added for the inventory with its final asset! This really helps with controllers especially, for clarity and ease of navigation.
Isometric maps are complete too! Art, their modular nature (areas you have unlocked are the ones that are displayed), and the final code!
The code has been so massively streamlined, I removed 28 redundant lines of code and 1.54MB of images! 💪
The Hover Hand™ has been programmed!
Upon hovering over the first page of any deity's section of the Journal, a shadow will appear of the MC's hand with a nice animation.
The appearance of the hand can change depending on if the player's choice have caused the MC to lose a ton of blood (a little shaky), if he bulks up, different poses to reflect extreme emotional states, etc.
The art asset of his hand will be updated with its final visuals to reflect the MC’s lanky physical appearance before our next build!
🪞 ON THE NOTE OF REFLECTING THE APPEARANCE OF OUR MC 🪞
A new "Find Reflection" feature is now available at specific, story-appropriate moments!!!! Catalyst: Blind Faith is seen through his eyes, so this is so you can view his reflection in appropriate nearby surfaces when it makes sense to.
Just like how the “Find Reflection” feature reflects the MC’s current appearance, his appearance reflects your choices. (Please take good care of him 🫶)
FITTING ROOM
Just for fun (this has no effect on the in-game appearance of our MC, as that would be changing continuity and wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense lol), we have a cosmetic image viewer!
You can view appearances you have unlocked from any playthrough in this demo screen, the "Fitting Room," on the main menu.
This feature is a WIP. A demo version will be available in the upcoming build!
ITEMS OBTAINED SCREEN
Upon acquiring story-significant items, a new screen now displays!
This screen for obtaining items contains an image of the item in question, its name, a description, and accompanying SFX.
Items seen in this fashion always populate in the “Inventory” section of the player’s journal, along with its flavor text.
WRITING
Home stretch and this is the biggest section. STRAP IN

Editing has been completed on all demo chapters! 🎉 The demo script's 46,000+ words across all 13 potential chapters is now 100% complete, with no edits required for future updates or the full game!
The player’s service dog and best friend, Ray, has had his design finalized! New content has been added to 8 separate chapters across many individual scenes in the demo alone to account for the spiked collar that this colossal English mastiff wears.
The structural and continuity considerations for those edits were so extensive that I wrote a devlog about it earlier this year! You can find that here: https://just-write-studios.itch.io/catalyst-blind-faith/devlog/738445/devlog-flowchart-insanity-and-why-it-massively-helped-me-with-extensive-edits-this-month
Achievement names for each demo ending have been revamped, thanks to our Official Discord Community’s votes!
Our itch.io page and the game's description have been updated!
The most intense sequences of body horror throughout the trunk of the story (a WHOPPING 130+ chapters) were evaluated for sensitivity concerns and authentic portrayals of body horror and its psychological ramifications!
4 months were spent on that sensitivity editing, with the incredible review by our lead editor and a team of sensitivity readers, bringing the heart of the story to ~95% completion. Only a few niche combinations of those events remain to be written!
If you are interested in that branching structure and how I manage its complexity, there's there start of a narrative devlog series here: https://just-write-studios.itch.io/catalyst-blind-faith/devlog/846233/devlog-narrative-design-and-the-branching-structure-of-catalyst-blind-faith
Embarking on writing the darkest content in the game – a route where you pursue your relationship with the God of Vengeance above all others - has taken LEAPS AND BOUNDS longer than anything else I've ever done.
It should come as no surprise that writing such serious content with the gravity and care it deserves has been far from a solo endeavor! 💪
SHOUT OUT to KnowledgeDomain, our lead editor. Her standards for quality are astronomical, and only paralleled by her professionalism and dedication to her projects. I am intensely proud to work with her. 💖
In Just Write Studios, we have numerous Quality Assurance experts!! HUGE shout out to our narrative consult, Cirno, who has been working on Catalyst: Blind Faith since day 1. His sensitivity reading, continuity checks, and feedback is invaluable, along with all of the hours he's spent hearing me ramble about outlining and what content to cut or keep. 😂🫶
I've also had the help of a dedicated critique group (QueenofOj and TheRealWiwaxia, you ARE REAL ONES, thank you!!!), as well as a small army of volunteers who have shared their experiences, offered focused sensitivity reading, and an overwhelming amount of support.
IN FACT THERE IS SO MUCH TO BE SAID ABOUT ALL OF THIS WRITING, I began a 10-part devlog series to do justice to it all. That’s where the flowchart all the way above comes from!
I am really looking forward to picking up on those deep dives into the narrative and technical structure, as well as how I handle things like unreliable narrators and sensitive content all throughout 2025! ❤️ We are well on our way to plowing through its crazy narrative structure, and I have also outlined all other routes and narrative structures for the full game!! ✍️
AND LAST
BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST

so i've run a homestuck book club for two different groups of friends over the past couple years, both of which contained multiple people reading homestuck for the very first time! we followed a reading schedule that i made which broke the comic up into a reading schedule that spanned 16 weeks (14 weeks of reading, plus two hiatus simulation weeks), and then on a set day we'd get together via discord chat and talk about the reading of the week. it was a great time!
all this is to say: sure, you might lose some of the Experience(TM) of homestuck by not being around for its heyday, but it is absolutely possible to read and enjoy homestuck as an archival reader. though as a few tips:
don't use the official website. the death of flash hit homestuck hard, and a lot of the games and cool embeds that made use of the website's layout in medium-bending ways are now broken. instead, use the unofficial homestuck collection. it's a downloadable homestuck reader app that preserves the original experience of homestuck. it also contains accessibility settings like changing fonts/text sizes, high contrast mode, and all sorts of other things. you can even add mods to it. yeah, that's right, you can read modded homestuck.
a lot of what you "miss" reading homestuck in 2024 is the context of its day. so in that vein, several readers in my book club also listened along with the podcast Homestuck Made This World. the premise is that two hosts--michael, who was a day one homestuck reader, and cmrn, who'd never read it--read through the comic together and analyze it through the lens of literary criticism. michael also does a lot of research into the historical context of the events of the comic: things like fan reactions, memes, and trends within the fandom, as well as stuff that hussie was saying, which was all in conversation with the comic during its run. it's an enjoyable listen, and it does a very good job at showing you homestuck as an object that took place in time.
read it with friends! even if it's just liveblogging in a buddy's dms, or just posting to your followers, having someone along for the ride is half the fun.
obviously, you won't get the same experience reading homestuck in today as you would have in 2011, but it's certainly by no means an impossible feat! if it's something you're at all interested in, i recommend giving it a shot!
so homestuck is a big deal for a lot of people but if really feels like it was a "you just had to be there" sort of thing. (I was not there and barely know about it beyond what you get by just existing on tumblr) I'm curious if any of you know people that have dived in and "read" it all in recent years. How did they do it? How was their experience? Is this something that is even possible? How so?
