* i.e. you're both a n-th year and a n+1-th year between end of spring semester and start of fall semester
** this option is specific to PhD programs in math and fields with similar structures. These are the exams typically taken during your first/second years before you get an advisor and are more breath focused instead of depth focused. I'veseen them called qualifying exams or preliminary exams and most departments will have their primary round in either late May/early June or in August (most also have another round in January and I've seen one school with all three).
#the names of the milestones are absurdly non standardized between math department#like everyone recognizes thesis and dissertation as interchangeable terms for the last step#but in addition to the first exams being either quals and prelims#ive seen the second milestone called prelims quals or comps (comprehensives)#and the format of the secone milestone is also extremely varied. the written exams dont vary so much#we have comps for our second milestone and the format is different for math ed students compared to the other research areas#even though we're all in the math phd program in the math department#seven stories

dissertation title planning (I know what I'm doing (<- lying))
#in case it isn't clear the format I want to go for is 'Quote': Body#I quite like 'Because Things Are Not Afraid': The Subjectivity of Fear in the Haunting of Hill House#or 'Without Concession to Humanity': Affective Landscapes and Feeling Objects in Shirley Jackson's Fictions of Home#but I also like the idea of the possessive environment and maintaining the emphasis on landscape and subject-object relations#shirley jackson#the haunting of hill house#my problem is one of categorisation in that the books I'm focusing on (primarily THOHH secondarily WHALITC and her autobio stuff)#do not fit well into a defined chronological and thematic category. 'fictions of home' bitch that's arguably all her novels at least#dissertation posting#✨️

Someone should hire me for ideas on building a superior word processor specifically for dissertation writing I have so many good ideas
#jonniejonniejonquil#jonnie's phd era#dissertation#writing#i like google doc's ui best *personally*#but i have like. so many features that would be so helpful if they existed.#for instance#“read more”s like tumblr#where you can like have quotes in your notes#but collapse them once they're used and only see like the first few words#wouldnt be great for actual papers but fantastic for notes docs#tagging systems#where you can highlight specific parts of the text and add a tag#then search by tag to find all the relevant text pieces again#can kinda do with comments but its clunky and affects the appearance of ur page a lot#i want that baby *invisible* but *present*#search by format#i.e. “if text red then select”#i tend to visually highlight my problem moments in red for instance or anything i need to fact check in blue#I would like to be able to *search* and see where all my red and blue moments are#also#auto-citation maker#implement the typical citation maker like endnote or other plug-ins mhm mhm yeah thats chill and a blessing anyway#but also please#if you are copy/pasting a section that's in like your notes doc and you can tell that section has a citation there#automatically make a citation here too!#just tell the program “my notes for the current (writing) document are in this secondary document”#and it draws out all the citations automatically#ALSO MAYBE WE CAN JUST HAVE INDIVIDUAL DOCS FOR NOTES BY SOURCE#ALL FILTERED INTO THE CITATION SUBPROGRAM

maybe framing the diss. through being a discourse of elite men will save it. perhaps.
#assignment season is haunting if only because I can’t take action on dissertation ideas#but the exercises in rhetoric argument of ch 1 kinda saved it#so what if that was the whole thing#like dissecting these rhetorical moments in time for what they’re trying to do#this is so basic but the framing so far as been how they’re dealing with the platonic spectre as opposed to why#or even just how these moments feed off one another#but like the evil relations chapter 2 arguably could benefit from ch1s framing because like#what are these writers trying to achieve by outlining how Platonism and christianity aren’t compatible#is it that much of a threat? why is it a threat? what are they doing beyond talking about this#this is so basic but like I forgot to actually meaningfully address it because I got so lost in being like what even happens in this space#but also aaaaa what do I do with the logos seeds#I guess it acts as the how they’re going about this#it does appear to be a core piece of the argument#but what does this mean for Augustine ch3#I guess there’s always why does Augustine do this but like I don’t like that I prefer being like augustine find conclusions to earlier qs#far more because it allows for the medieval angle to maintain relevance#which perhaps gives my dissertation half an ounce of meaning#hhh#to be discussed with my supervisor#going hey ***** here’s where we’re at don’t ask why it’s formatted as tumblr tags#capstone

A journal asked me to review a paper. It's a theory paper, and it's 22 pages long. That's inhumane. That's about half the length of my dissertation.
So yeah, ok, I'm late submitting my referee report. I think this is a pretty valid excuse.

So because one of my readers sent me edits like 2 weeks before my defense, I am going to have to talk to the person about formatting again 🤬🙄 Like honestly this is so uncool. But to be fair there were errors and now they’ll be fixed. Still annoyed. I refuse to look up more works at this point, like come on. Proofreading is one thing but adding stuff is just such a pain at this point 😩

Another example of the nonsense I have to deal with from my advisor: while reading my conclusion, he asked me "shouldn't you put full citation details in the first footnote?"
I am using Chicago NB style and have been since I gave him my first chapter more than a year ago. And no, that style (a very standard one in theology) does not require full citation details in the footnote.
#bad enough i'm forced by the graduate school style guidelines to put all the bibliography together#primary sources and secondary sources for 4 different authors just bumping up against each other all over the place#it's 20 pages long#not because i'm so obsessed with secondary sources (i'm not) but because that's what it takes to cover 4 theologians#the dissertation#pray for meeeeeeee trying to finish editing my conclusion and format the entire thing this week#a week that also includes 20 hours of babysitting#and ends friday when i have to drive to georgia to help with my grandma

Anyways fuck MLA format Chicago style is so much better and I hate that MLA is taught as the 'only correct' format because it's largely inconsequential if you're writing an actual dissertation.
