The grand opening of Club Juke proves to be too much for Annie. Seeing Smoke interact with other women so soon after reuniting with her sets off emotions she's far too fragile to process.

Smoke, riding a high from his reunion with his love, misses all the signals that their paradise is slowly going from a peninsula to a sinking island.

Annie forced a smile to her face as Pearline, a locally known singer, pranced in her direction.

"Can you believe it!" Pearline crooned, cat eyes pulled tight as she grabbed Annie's hand. "I've heard so much buzz about this place opening and it's finally happening."

Annie's eyes shifted from Pearline to Smoke as he stood not too far off, in a close conversation with Stack. "Yeah, umm. It's great. I-haven't heard a thing about it though." Annie allowed the vulnerability to slip into her tone.

Pearline stood straighter, frowning. "You ain't know your man and his twin were opening a club?"

Once again, Annie felt like an outsider in Smoke's world. "Nope." Her lips popped as she returned her eyes to Pearline. "No biggie though."

Pearline's shoulders bounced. "Well, you're here and I saw you two walk in arm and arm. Don't let these hoes shake you. That man loves you down." Before Annie could say more, Pearline walked away.

A task. One presenting itself to be impossible. Each time a woman approached him, seductive eyes and intimate gestures, Annie's pulse quickened. Jealously danced in her gut, unapologetic twist and turns as she struggled to keep the rage from her expression. These emotions although new, were perpetual, undeniably draconian.

How does he do this so effortlessly?

Smoke's ability to unravel her both emotionally and physically deserves a prolific dissertation. Someone...anyone would sit through it, take notes and somehow use it to heal the world or set it on fire. She'd die peacefully as a sacrifice, not wanting anything else.

Rudely, her thoughts were interrupted by the sight of yet another woman approaching Smoke. Annie's eyes took in the deep plunge in her dress, coupled with a slit that left absolutely nothing to the imagination. Manicured fingers curled around his wrist before she leaned in to place a kiss on his cheek. She wasn't the first woman to kiss him tonight and Annie knew she wouldn't be the last.

She couldn't stomach it.

"Fuck this." She grabbed her purse from the table, snapping it close before she started towards the door. The moment she began to move, she knew he was following her, yet she didn't stop in her stride to the exit.

Smoke cut in front of her, gently grabbing her arm before turning her to him. Intense eyes hit her as smoke from his cigar lingered between them like words unspoken. His gaze was centered on her as she shifted her weight in her stance. He stepped closer to her, invading her personal space like it was his to do with as he pleased. His hands moved from her arm to her waist, a gesture of intimacy that didn't hit her the way it usually did.

"Another hour or so before we can go." Smoke stepped closer to her, pulling her into a quick kiss as Annie struggled with returning his passion. Smoke instantly frowned. "Talk to me."

"I was gonnna call a Lyft. I'm a little tired."

He nodded. "Aight. Let me grab my shit and we can go."

"No." Annie grabbed him before he could move. "You should stay with Stack, you know he functions better with you in close proximity."

Smoke's brows touched. "You wanna leave alone?"

"It's a short ride..."

"You going to check on ol' boy?" His brow lifted, eyes hard and focused. Such a contradiction to the loud and loose club goers surrounding them. Loose tension moved between them, silently brewing as their eyes had a standoff.

"No." Annie answered finally. "I'm going home."

"To him?" Smoke refused to allow her to leave without real answers.

"No." Annie groaned. "I'm actually just sick of seeing bitches in your face. I need a break."

Smoke's jaw clenched. "I just had my face between you legs for eight hours, Annie. I plan to put your pussy right back in my face when we leave here." Smoke looked around, confused by her words. "I've been licking my lips so much they're chapped because I can still taste you on my tongue. Your juices still linger in my beard and I ain't doing shit to get rid of them because that's where they belong." He stepped into her, forcing her against the wall. "What bitches are you referring to, my love?"

hi tags, i've debated making this post but here i ho. it's the typical "i hate making these posts because of x, y, z", but for the past year or so i've made various posts regarding my mum's health journey and in april she suddenly passed. so it's safe to say that life hasn't been the greatest on my side of the internet.

i won't go into detail, and to cut a long story short, i have £150 in my bank to last me until i go back to work— and right now, it's looking like that'll be in a few months. this money doesn't include my student grant (after an extension that i have to finish my uni work/dissertation, etc.) but it has limited my ability to work (obviously), along with having to be around for my father who is the only family i have. we're not doing great, and that much is expected. with my father being retired, i am the only person to make money (minus a pension but it's not a lot, and the money we received from my mother's has to last my father the rest of his life). i'm paying rent for my university flat (until my contract is up in july), along with helping my father out, food, necessities, etc.

on top of this tumblr decided to shadow my commissions blog (sebegifs) which is the only way i'm making income (yes, i'm still working on the one commission i owe), which was really the kicker. commissions are still live and open, just paused on the sake of being posted (information here is still valid if you're interested in anything before a new blog gets set up) but if you decide on anything, please message me here.

i'm once again not asking for much— i say this every time but it is true— or if there's really a point to this post, but i just wanted to say that my new commissions blog (fingers crossed) is a work in progress over at @elsgifs (within the next few days all information will be there and live, i'm just having a hard time with focusing on it so maybe this post is rendering itself useless but forgive me i'm also extremely scatterbrained), and i'm more than happy to provide anyone with gif packs, gif icons, rp base icons, etc. that i can (while i'm not in work and need an extra few dollars to pass me by). so any questions about that, please don't hesitate to ask me (chances are if you submit a request it can be set up/released sooner than later)

HELLO, never apologize! These are keeping me entertained as much as I hope they entertain you so ask away!! It also makes me so happy seeing that people are interested in my fan-fic trope life. Plus it's an excuse to show off my storytelling in a way that's hopefully hot enough for the public.

So this isnt exactly an ob but allow a guy to ramble about his university work for a moment, if you please. Primarily, yes, I speak Russian with Professor if he adresses me in the language, but I speak English to Husband. English is the common denominator language between the three of us despite it not being any of our first languages. That said, my thesis and dissertation are both on the importantance of decolonization and written in a mixture of Native tribal languages.

Okay enough nerding out. The obs you came for are under the cut.

Our long important trip is about a week away and I'm not sure if I'll survive it. Husband has already texted our chat (a few other students and professors are coming along) that Professor has a cold. Our group is heading to my home reservation where both of them will be (maybe hopefully but also I dont want to die) impossibly sneezy. Pollen is part of a lot of tribal rituals that I'll be taking Husband to so stay tuned, you're invited to my funeral. Honestly, Professor might have it better out of the two of them this time unless he gets sick.

I didnt realize how quickly I'm running out of snz stories in the reserves... they'll be replenished soon I'm sure but let me think.

A really funny interaction I've had with Professor is after I had a really bad medical episode and missed his midterm. He summoned me to his office and I was so sure I was going to get despicablely chewed out. Anyway, I go in and he starts laying into me about 'putting health first' and 'never apologize for these things, you are more important than a test'. I was so close to tears and he suddenly pauses, clears his throat, and grabs a tissue while turning away. He pinches it over his nose and waits a second before turning towards me to keep talking. Except he dips forward with a 'GXTCH-uh' and it was so absurdly timed that I started laughing.

This one might feel a little recycled since I talk a lot about Professor being sick in class but you keep feeding the monster so here. So Professor's room is lecture style but since there's only seven of us in the class, we never use the whole space. This means Professor literally just roams around when he isnt teaching like he's Gilligan on his travels or whatever that book was about. Of course, when youre sick, all that walking gets pretty tiring pretty quickly. So he goes on these journeys while sporadically having to sit down and cough or hold his head or just groan in pathetic Russian gibberish. OR (my personal favorite) he'll sneeze and stifle so hard that he plops himself into a chair or has to sit on a desk. This man is such a hazard, SIT DOWN.

Anyway, side question; does anyone want another wav? The constant smoking of my grandparents is making that very easy right now so... BYE

Symbrock– or, A Complex Love Affair Between Parasite and Host

Abstract

An investigation into “Symbrock,” or the bizarre emotional relationship between Eddie Brock– a struggling journalist and Spider-Man villain– and Venom– the parasitic alien symbiote that lives in Eddie’s body. Herein will discuss the themes, appeal, and complicated nature of the dynamic. This is a dissertation, this is an analytical dissection, but above all, this is a love story.

Keywords: Symbrock. portmanteau of “symbiote” and “Brock.”

In the fall of 2018, Venom had his individual film debut to millions of Spider-Man fans and  casual movie-goers. The movie was critically panned. Fans of Spider-Man and critics of pop culture media united to declare that they hated the "buddy cop" direction that writers Kelly Marcel and Ruben Fliesher  had taken the character of Venom. Many believed that Marcel (most known for screen adapting Fifty Shades of Grey) wasted the film's grizzly horror potential exploring the getting-together of Eddie and Venom. The majority had spoken, the movie had failed. So why was the fandom exploding? Within days, there were threads, blog posts, and video essays, all delving into a new obsession with this chummy characterization of Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote. Intrigued by it, turned on by it, and desperate for more content of it, this mysterious fan base began to go through nearly forty years of lore for more of the duo they loved. What they found changed the perception of Venom as a character. Venom historians, fans, and even comic writers declared that Eddie Brock and the symbiote were in love. But the question remains, why these two? What was the evidence, what was the response, and why did this relationship appeal to the queer audience it'd captured? In short, why had Venom become a queer icon?

Symbrock– or, A Complex Love Affair Between Parasite and Host   

When “I” became “We”

There is groundwork to lay in regards to proving the nature of this dynamic, and it begins with understanding what binds the two physically and spiritually, requiring readers to go back to the beginning. 

While originally brought together by a mutual hatred of Spider-Man (read, The Amazing Spider-Man #300, 1988) the earliest example of a deeper bond between Brock and Venom comes to us in Venom: The Hunger (1996). Within the comic itself, Eddie Brock and Venom’s dynamic is threatened by the symbiote’s cannibalistic desires, which Eddie can not cope with. 

   If we blur our eyes and look at The Hunger, we see a story about Eddie coming to terms with the inherent violence and needs of Venom. Specifically, he sees how the symbiote needs a chemical compound called phenethylamine to survive– a fact that often leads him to eat human brains to get his fix. A trait that disturbs Brock so much that it drives the symbiote away, leaving the man without powers. In a straightforward manner, the story follows Eddie's journey to accept this hunger in order to remain bonded to Venom. In the final pages of the comic, Eddie brings the symbiote a vial of phenethylamine, as well as promises to share his own. The two reunite to create something stronger once again. From a distance, it's an exploration into what binds the two physically, but it’s not a fair one. Upon closer inspection, The Hunger is much more than a story of compromise. 

The deep eroticism of Venom, to most, begins with the very chemical that the symbiote subsists on. For the purposes of Eddie and Venom's connection, it's important to know that phenethylamine is chemically similar to phenylethylamine– commonly referred to as “the love hormone.” According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), when concentrated, the compound has similar effects on the brain to amphetamines. Broadly, it is considered a “feel-good” chemical, and is associated with sensations of intense euphoria and gratification due to its releases of dopamine. (read: NIH). Including a chemical associated with love, sex, and even chocolate is obviously an intentional decision on the writer's part. There are thousands of compounds that comic creators had to choose from. Fear hormones, rage hormones, all things that could've related more to the brutal nature of Venom as a villain.

But the writer, Len Kaminski, chose love. And so was born Venom’s obsession with the chemical, leading him to chase it in all its forms, from human brains and nerve endings– to, as seen in the last panels of The Hunger, a heart-shaped box of chocolates, which the symbiote says is a great source of phenethylamine. There it is, a scientific explanation of why Venom feeds on love. But even with this justification of the phenomenon, Kaminski refuses to pull punches, refuses to make this platonic.

All I Ever Want Is Just A Little Love

Kaminski’s reading of Brock is far beyond romantic, and it bleeds into how writers would interpret the character even decades later (most notably, Mike Costa’s Venom run from 2016-2019). In the first volume of Hunger, Kaminski writes a heartbreaking scene in which, after eating a man’s brain, Eddie shows a deep remorse that drives Venom to separate from their bond. This was mentioned above, but what was not mentioned was how the symbiote left Brock; naked and trembling in a back alley, begging “the other” not to abandon him. The man is left in a state of temporary psychosis without Venom, his brain leached of all phenethylamine. After a stint in a tortuous sanitarium, he chases the symbiote down and reunites with it, claiming proudly “It’s not human, but it’s given me things no girlfriend ever could,” and declaring that he finally has enough love to sustain the titular hunger. 

This wouldn’t be the last time Eddie would be written as captivated by his love for Venom, but it would go on to influence later iterations of the character, from the aforementioned Costa run to directorial notes of the films that’d launched the character into infamy.

In Venom #150, Mike Costa compared the bond between Brock and Venom to marriage. The interaction is a chilling one, taking place within the church where the two originally bonded, and where Eddie angsts about the nature of their relationship. He confesses, in vague terms, to a priest, that he loves his “other,” but that he’s been driven to do things he never would have done before. When the father implies that the dynamic isn’t healthy, we see a violent, possessive side of Venom. The symbiote overtakes Eddie’s body and nearly kills the priest– an action he later repents for the very same priest. He vows to try to be better in the name of devotion to his other. This marks a shift in Venom’s character and a complex arc into a more open and honest relationship between the two. And, as stated previously, this interpretation would grow to be popular with an audience of queer people, but the question remains as to why. 

All Guts and Heart. There's an air of nuanced relatability to Venom as a unit. On online forums, users within the fandom each have unique reasons for loving the ship. Some enjoy that both characters are relatable outcasts, some are enthralled with the trope of “idiots in love” present in their dynamic, and some are just plain attracted to Venom. 

But for a more devoted sect of the fan base, the intrigue lay in the intense physical proximity between symbiote and host. The potential for intimacy that comes with literally sharing a mind and body is intense. Venom, according to both the comics and films, sees every thought, compulsion, desire, and regret Eddie has, and Brock can do just the same to Venom. 

One example of this is an excerpt from Marvel Comics Presents #5 (2019), which recently became circulated for its dark, provocative, and tense language. In the comic, Venom is handling the man with their tendrils while speaking in his mind. “We can feel every dirty curve of Eddie's intentions. All that lust entangled with terror.” and later, “We enjoy the taste of Eddie's heartbeat. Strong, solid, sweet … Should we make it go faster?” To which Eddie responds, “Watch the teeth.”

Fans were stunned by the sensuality of these panels; particularly on Tumblr, a popular blogging website. One fan claimed to have even seen a phallic shape in the dreamscape of flesh and teeth that the scene was set in. Many more declared the scene was a sex act.

It seems almost like an intentional callback to the “It's not human,” line. As though the writers are willing to explore the dynamic in a romantic and psychological context, and fans love getting to see this dimension of the characters– even when the subject matter is dark. 

As with any piece of media, fan interaction is integral to the longevity and survival of a fan base, so it'd be an obvious point to investigate opinions of Venom within the fandom. 

Fan testimonials. When asked why the ship appealed to them, popular Symbrock blogger @symbiotic-slime responded, “I guess I would describe it as the intimacy of being known? Having your self laid bare and someone else seeing and knowing everything about you and still choosing to stay is very romantic in my opinion.” 

Regarding personal relation to the individuals: “It's partially because of being the weird neurodivergent queer kid. People think they're weird, their relationship is wrong, or something like that. Kinda hits a little too close to home.” says user @cannibalhellhound. The community in general seems to relate deeply to the outcast nature of Eddie and Venom, a point that comes through as well in discussions of the characters’ presentation and gender, as well as their “loser” status. Symbiotic-slime described a sense of connection to the devil-may-care attitude the symbiote takes with their pronouns and appearance, and user @just-anti-heros-things states succinctly, “Together they make a whole idiot who can fight battles and save the world. Or just fuck around and find out.”

 A handful of aspec (asexual spectrum) fans even described connecting with the alien nature of their relationship, with user @bridoesotherjunk saying quote, “They’re not putting on a performance to please anyone- they’re just… them. And they love each other for it! That’s what I want for myself,” and @shiningstardan comparing the relationship to their own experiences with attraction towards other people. 

No matter the sentiment, most fans agree that despite being outlandish and extraterrestrial, Venom and Eddie have a character more grounded than many an idealized hero in the Marvel universe. From holding hands in a movie theater to raising a child together, the two are never alone, and fans crave that proximity. 

Discussion

While not a  universally beloved franchise on its own, Venom has achieved cult status among a number of internet users for its raw, vulnerable, and often camp portrayal of a complicated relationship between two flawed characters. It's a fanbase that breeds creativity, exploration, and catharsis through the fantasy of a love foretold in stars. A place to make art, write fanfiction, and bond with other outcasts.

We’re on FanFiction.net Now!

A big status update with memes by Cyvu37.

Hi! I hope you’re doing well. I’ve begun the process of copying some of the good Shots from here to FanFiction.net and Wattpad, including Drunk Adventures of the Captain and the Goddess and Yandere Eris at the attached links. You can promote these stories with likes and reviews (or not 🤷‍♂️). You can also comment which other Shots should become stories on FanFiction.net and Wattpad. As an avid editor, I take feedback with great consideration from silly to serious. (I might only put big stories on Wattpad.)

Right now, from lowest to highest priority, I’m actively working on Drunk Adventures, the novel now called No Regrets in this Wonderful World!, and a brand-new crossover between Konosuba and Naruto. First part coming soon! I’ve seen quite a bit of anime, but I’m new to Naruto. I may tweak some behavior with reasons that might be spoilers, but I’ll still need that feedback.

As for DrPibIsBack, I must say with a heavy heart that this magnificent Redditor will not be continuing this Shot journey with us. We met online about 6 years ago, just commenting on Reddit pics and expanding each other’s skits. Some comment threads turned out so good, that I simply had to share them somewhere. That somewhere became Konosuba Shots, and we had lots of fun doing this for over a year. In fact, the very first Konosuba Shot became the basis of our No Regrets! novel that’s still in the works 6 years later.

DrPibIsBack provided a unique perspective on Konosuba that made scenes more vibrant, colorful, and emotional than I could ever make alone. For this reason, I truly cherish the wild Yandere Eris story. I remember when DrPibIsBack wrote most of the beginning, just going through each scene comment by comment. I also remember the morning when I came up with the big conclusion starting when Kazuma had his moment of realization. This bolt of lightning wasn’t written or edited perfectly, but it made for a pretty good action sequence. Still, the meat of Yandere Eris would be nothing without the contribution of DrPibIsBack, who also made huge contributions as former co-author to the No Regrets! novel.

As for me, I recently got accepted into a Ph.D. program with an assistantship to analyze drought that already started. Fortunately, the assistantship covers tuition and dissertation topics, and even pays a bit of money. Unfortunately, Ph.D. work means things might be slow here, especially with me doing the heavy lifting on all the stories, this blog, and the Ph.D. However, I intend to keep this blog updated with every chapter, and even the simplest feedback can make things subarashii. (Seriously, I’m flying blind here, so anything helps.)

My hope is to keep contributing to the wondrous possibilities of Konosuba and to make your day a little better. At some point, I might move on into an anime multiverse and even original content in the future. I’ll let you know.

Don't you find it weird how many make up random ships online about Telemachus and Athena separately yet if people ship them together suddenly it's a no? I wonder why that is and if you have encountered such behaviour

Yes. It’s weird. It’s so effing weird 😂 I mean, mythology— be it ancient text,retellings, or fandom — it gets WEIRD with its romances. Zeus turns into a friggin’ swan to seduce a woman and the entire Olympian and Atreus tree is a dang circle — that’s normal. Madeline took Telegony and was like “I like this idea so I’m putting it in and making Athena awful, and have Telemachus fall in love with Circe who gives up her immortality and has two daughters with him”; and people were like “that’s fine”. In fandom, I’ve seen both Telemachus & Athena paired with pretty much EVERYONE except each other…I’m talking REALLY weird stuff like Athena/Medusa getting freaky with snakes. Athena/Odysseus/Penelope , TELEMACHUS/Odysseus/Penelope.

But a Parthenos (THE paradigmatic Parthenos) and an Ephebe (THE paradigmatic Ephebe) who have an extremely deep connection, are incredibly inseparable , literally “arouse” * each other into action, and set off alone together on a sea journey** perhaps having a romantic/sexual relationship is worth a “set everything on fire and force the OP to drink Hemlock” level freak out.

This is pretty vanilla and also extremely non-problematic (as it’s consensual and they both care and respect each other), in comparison. Also, I honestly thought it was going to be a pretty common/popular ‘non-brainer’ ship, tbh.

And ok, I get how the pairing might be weird to some with how they’re depicted in “Epic: The Musical”, however, I’m not talking about “Epic”. And as for the whole “immune to Eros/virginty” thing; we crossed that bridge and burned it a while ago in this context; see above. So, why does this suddenly only matter with this particular pairing?

The “WHY” is what we should be deliberating. Really hard. I have. The “why” requires a whole philosophical treatise and to be the topic of lengthy discussion in a Symposium. So, kinda hard for me to get fully into it at nearly 2am. A lot of “Allegory of the Cave” type stuff. But the bottom line is that there’s something a bit too “real” about it, and that opens up a lot of questions about other things we have felt secure & certain about in the mythological canon. Honestly, it’s kind of what I love about this pairing, and why they’re worth exploring further in this light.

And also, causing this level of freak out really screams ultimate “Power Couple”.

* yup…the term ‘arouse’ is used in almost every translation. No, I’m not combing through the at least 30+ translations and variations of the text I have scattered about to cite the quotes at 1:55am for a Tumblr post. I’ll post actual essays with that another time.

Harry's time of birth is my Da Vinci Code, I say this jokingly but not so jokingly lol. I know this has been a topic that jumps on here from time to time and sometimes I myself have made suggestions. I try to use both tropical and sidereal astrology/nakshatras to try and pinpoint what fits best and I think I'm close. I am convinced this man is not a libra rising, it does not fit him at all. Jupiter has been transiting through his 1H since May 2024, and will stay there until June 2025. He possibly broke up with Taylor in May 2024, when Jupiter began it's journey into Gemini. Prior to being in his 1h, Jupiter was moving through his 12h from May 2023 for about a year. He possibly began his relationship with Taylor around June 2023. This isn't to try and make any conclusions against Taylor, it's to highlight the possibility that this relationship/connection was important for Harry to acknowledge his subconscious shadows, if he was running from them before. Zion quoting Lorraine Hansberry during a blackmail negotiation is the funniest thing ever. 

Piper’s journey was the opposite of growth from beginning to end.  She sneers at Saxon’s overt expression of their family, class privilege while comfortably lying to her family about a dissertation to scam an expensive trip to do a walkthrough of a monastery in Thailand.  Who does that?  There are monastery retreats in America, Piper.  She didn’t have to leave her zip code if she wanted to divine a stable identity away from the community that birthed her.  Piper traveled around the world when she could have taken a walk around her neighbor

Laurie can run from gunfire, but she can’t free herself from wanting to be at the table with old friends. Jaclyn and Kate can’t like Laurie until she opens her eyes and wants more than what she’s been told to want, desire. She believed some semblance of belonging would come from work or parenthood because that’s a societal design.  I hated her speech because she still thinks she deserves less than the popular girls. 

Jaclyn will always rationalize why she is the way she is.  Just like Victoria Ratliff.  

Kate voted for a predatory felon to fit in with the corrupt Christians in her community.  You can never trust women like her.

Tim Ratliff wanted to take care of his family in life AND death.  The arrogance.  The entitlement. The honesty is too much for people to contemplate. 

Lochlan Ratliff should not ever had put his hand on his brother’s penis.  No amount of people pleasing could justify this.  

Saxon Ratliff, I wanted him to be a casualty of the poison or the gun.  He’s going to just become an alcoholic frat boy telling stories of how his family was once wealthy and envied.

Chelsea’s spirituality was rooted in denial and not protecting herself.   I hate that for anyone.  Because it was a superficial perspective on spirituality, it was perceived as profound for the shallowest of men – Saxon.  Rick told her get out of here and she stayed.  Believing you are soulmates has zero potential to stop bullets.  I love Chelsea’s heart and vulnerability.  I hate that it is most likely the reason why she died.

Mook I had to sleep on Mook's motivations and choices. Because it's painful to see moral decline in a character that you want to like and understand. I understand her criteria for Gaitok. I don't have to like it.

Gaitok The social extortion required for limited masculinity seems too high at times. Killing Rick being the lubricant for career and personal success is gross reality of the world we live in. Ugh.

Parting Thoughts and What's Next?

(Excuse the vain photo of me amongst the cherry blossoms, I don't like making blog posts without photos on them!)

At the end of my four years of uni, the question I have heard the most is 'What's next?' What is next? I honestly don't know.

My future in film is unclear, over the past four years my self-doubt has been a raging issue and I think I will pursue directing and cinematography in my own time for my own passion projects. But on an industry level, I would like my journey to lead to working in a sound design post-production house. This would be my ultimate dream, somewhere like Savalas in Glasgow. I feel this would mean I could be creative and work within the industry whilst still leading the kind of life that I would like outside of that, where I have time for family, friends and more.

On the side as well as that I want to do intimacy coordination. I did my dissertation on Sex Education in Film and Television and I volunteer with the charity Sexpression outside of uni as a sex educator. So, I feel my next logical step is to merge my researched knowledge in these departments with my technical and creative skills in film and this brings me to intimacy coordination. I want to ensure that sets are more ethical spaces where everyone especially actors are treated well and not taken advantage of and in the uneasy power dynamics that can ensue between an actor and a director I want to ensure where I can that this is not abused.

I also want to travel the world and live abroad. Who knows what will happen. Here is a photo of little Peer from my first year helping on the set of Away Out:

I am happy because I know I have come a long way and I can't wait to see what's next.

This is goodbye. For now at least. It's been a blast. 4 years go by so fast. I have learned a great deal, even though we started during COVID-19 and my confidence levels over the years in my abilities were not always what I hoped for. Maybe one day that will be different.

I'm sure it will be, I can already feel it changing.

What I do know is that I can't wait to see what's next!

Delenn (Babylon 5). She has been my main source of inspiration for many years now.

Lucy Preston (Timeless). If I ever finish my phd, this will happen only because of her, because goodness knows I can barely look at my dissertation at this point, I’m so tired of it lol

Roberta Pellegrino (Il Paradiso delle Signore). There are many wonderful characters in this tv show that inspire me, but probably the one who taught me the most is Roberta, whose character journey gave me strength to work hard, to dream, and to not be afraid to live my own life.

I know we love to talk about breaking the rules in writing and obviously, that not every piece of advice is one-size-fits all, but there is a lot to say about being able to speak with each other about what we have learned during our journey. I was wondering if you wouldn't share. (I also plan on poking some of the others to see what more we can shake out. The more the merrier, no?)

What is the most useful/helpful pieces of advice you ever received during your formal education in relation to writing?

Once you started to write, what was the most important thing that you learned about writing or its process?

Thank you so much for the ask Winter! I love sharing these things with fellow writers, it makes me so happy, so this is really welcome. Sorry it took me so long!

1. I don't have a formal education in writing other than academic pieces (dissertations, publications, etc), but I think what helped me is "read things aloud". Both for flow and for style, it was so helpful!

2. I learned to not care. If it sounds good to me, I do it. This may sound like bad practice, but Shakespeare made up words, and every theory was made up by someone at some point. If I want to create a new turn of phrase that sounds strange but makes sense to me, I will. This is where being trilingual helps a lot, because I take from multiple languages and find the beauty in each of their structures, so I can import onto another language, like a graft.

In this scene, for example, I use Spanish structure in English, and I think the result is so intense!

She, in all certainty, lacked the will to perceive them as anything other than the sad attempts they made to rule over sacred wilderness rather than form a covenant with it, as she knew Holy, so she hunted and assembled her shelter and supplies out of those carcasses. Bone, sinew and skin were all she needed to survive the inclemencies of Skyrim’s weather.

3. Absolutely! I don't believe you can make anything without your real life influencing you. Art doesn't occur separately from your life, it's inscribed in it and its circumstances. I always learn new things, go through new experiences, meet new people, etc, or even read new things that inspire me! I have a rich life, and so my writing draws from it and is enriched.

4. Don't listen to anyone who says "don't write in an overly flowery way". If you like it, write like that. Do purple prose, abuse the thesaurus, include obscure references to things that only make sense to you. Look for the perfect word. And READ! A writer who does not read (and I'm talking about strong literature, not just things meant for kids and teens, or in-game text) will stagnate. Include Non-fiction In Your Reading Diet. Or else. Non-fiction is so important. Read writing theory, art theory, epistemology, other sciences. Read! Read! READ!

Here I am again, bringing you a slice of my life in the beautiful Champagne region. It is currently 14c but I am assured, by Météo, that we will have 26c this afternoon. Unseasonably warm but I am not complaining after having spent a lot of the sunny days of summer in a hospital bed.

The Foire aux Bulles last Sunday turned out to be a successful day for the ladies of the knitting, crochet and patchwork group. Two of my items sold which was a nice surprise. Apparently, they were talking to a lady who is interested in joining the group, she sews as well so we may manage to attract more people if we offer that facility. the more the merrier I say.

While we are onto the good news, I really must pass on the wonderful news that “The Ex Psychology Graduate” received her grade for her dissertation and only went and got herself a first! She is now awaiting one more grade to calculate her overall Masters grade. Huge congratulations are in order 🥳🥳.

“The Trainee Solicitor”, celebrated his birthday and what a wonderful birthday he had. It has continued until the weekend (well why just keep it to one day!)

“The Daddy” has not had his children this weekend, he has been visiting elderly relatives and friends as well as working too. He has “irons in the fire” to make his work life more manageable, at the moment he has a long journey to and from work (I remember those days), to be able to reduce this is so much better, mentally, physically and financially. We will have to see what happens but I wish him luck.

I do believe I have employed my new cleaner 😃, she is coming on Monday and Thursday and I am so looking forward to that. She requested a step ladder, unfortunately I don’t have one and being unable to go out shopping I still haven’t got one. Maybe my neighbour could lend me his for this week so that she can clean the windows and the shutter housing.

I am still reliant upon my friends (and neighbour) to do shopping for me. It is so hard trying to think what to have to eat, at least if I was in the shops I may see something which catches my eye. As most of my friends cook from scratch (no convenience foods for them) one friend seems to not have the faintest idea of portion sizes. She was trying to buy me a 750g shepherds pie 🙄. I have to cook my food and eat it within 15 minutes, it cannot be reheated so I doubt I could have “polished that pie off” all by myself. I have been rather nauseous with no taste so it would have been a lot of waste I reckon. I was salivating this morning as I asked another friend if she could buy me some greek yoghurt, unfortunately the supermarket in town didn’t have any 😩, however, she is going out this afternoon (with her work) if she manages to catch the supermarket before it closes she will look to see if she can get some there.

Anie delivered some hot soup, compote and some jars of another concoction, I hadn’t the heart to tell her I couldn’t eat any of it, but I did send her the information leaflet I was given. She quickly responded saying you cannot eat any of that food! It is so sad because people are only being kind but I really need to keep myself “right” as I don’t want an upset tummy or worse while my immunity is still low.

Another success was phoning the plumber and arranging an appointment for him to service my central heating boiler.

My gardener pulled up outside of my neighbours house on Monday and I was trying to catch him about trimming my hedges. Typically, I turned my back and next time I looked he had gone! I did ring him and all he said was he would ring and let me know when he can come out. Well better than nothing I suppose.

It looks as if this week has been very successful for me, I like weeks like that!

Now let’s have a look at the songs I have chosen. It seems to be a recurring theme of musicians taken before their time but such is life and as I have said before they leave us with some fantastic songs that we can listen to again and again. So my first one this week is by Phil Lynott, the song is back to 1982, “Old Town”.

The second song I have chosen is an album track featuring the distinctive voice of a Middlesbrough (UK) born “lad”. The track is “Weep No More” from the album “Straight Shooter” by Bad Company released in 1975 (I remember it like it was yesterday) If you decide to listen to the album online (or even just want to hear this track) let it play the next track “Shooting Star” as it really was a toss up between these two tracks. Just this week I found out that Paul Rodgers had suffered a massive health scare 4 years ago. Although thankfully he appears to be fully recovered and has just released a new album.

The photos this week should be titled “What a difference a day makes” (cue for another song).
