The Specter of Augustus: The First Roman "Emperor" and his Immediate Legacy

What does it mean to call Augustus a specter? As the foundational figure responsible for the creation of the principate and the imperial period that followed, Augustus is inseparable from the Roman empire at every moment and in all its manifestations. The figure of the princeps, moreover, and eventually the emperor, is in itself a specter since it is defined by its total alterity: separated from society, placed above but also among, a creator and enforcer of laws, subject to those laws and yet above them as the one who enjoys the right of absolute inspection. This absolute inspection remains even after Augustus no longer exists as human being because his presence is so embedded within the fabric of his creation, which makes inevitable constant encounters with his ghost.

This haunting extends to textuality. Augustus reigned contemporaneously with the creation of a literary body that, while not always focused on him specifically, could not avoid being affected by his extensive cultural and social reach. Augustus is an ever-present subtext of the literature produced during his lifetime. The consumption of that literature by the generations that followed in turn became subject to those very subtexts.

Logically we can imagine the specter of Augustus coming into being the moment he breathed his last. Augustus was the first of his kind and thus established a precedent with every decision he made including traditions that stretched back to time immemorial or were developed by others before the first princeps; Augustus put his stamp on every facet of Roman life whether or not its origin lay with him. Augustus welcomed apparitions, iterations, traces of the past through which he could claim authority. But we must not forget the role he played in creating ghosts. The ultimate success of Augustus was a long process of surviving the fluctuating geopolitical chaos that existed during the end of the first century BCE. As the sole survivor of a terrible civil war in which he took part – himself engaging in horrendous acts of violence – Augustus began a propaganda blitz that redefined his self-image, rewrote the origins of Rome, and firmly established his place of power within this new existence.

This was a multi-decade process that continued throughout Augustus’ reign, and while effort was put into including successors among this discourse – and this was hampered by the fact that they kept prematurely dying – it paled in comparison to the work done elevating Augustus himself. The rhetorical recollection of Augustus’ success depicted him as inevitable, that somehow his rise was by nature through an inborn greatness of character. An ideology was thus created that glossed over a messy historical reality and in the process tried to reorient past missteps as simply individual rungs on a ladder of fate that led ever upwards toward revered greatness. One thing that we know for sure, however, is that whoever ended up inheriting Augustus’ position was the opposite of inevitable. A post-Augustan existence, then, was always going spin off in a completely new direction, one that in no way followed the mythos developed by Augustus for himself and his family. Perhaps he knew this already and that is why so much emphasis was placed on solidifying his legacy though memorial. Whether it be the Res Gestae Divi Augusti, the Ara Pacis, the Mausoleum of Augustus, the Forum of Augustus, or the temple of Mars Ultor, a great deal of effort went into making Augustus a permanent facet of the collective Roman memory.

mob au rafia and rarry. my growing collection of rafe ideas/aus needed some bi!rafe/mob!rafe. i love my lil guy, and he deserved his own post. i'm willing to write him at any age from 19-40 ish. Once their oldest girl leaves for college, I think they'll start rethinking their lives. I'm also willing to write cleo, barry, jj, etc. brain dump. not really proofed. will be added to as we go. mob!rafe headcanons:

mob!rafe is the brawn, definitely not the brains. he's not calculated. barry and sofia often have to rein him on any big ideas or vengeful plans he kicks into action. he's reckless, ruthless, impulsive, and overly confident. he is, however, very vigilant and observant (lowkey paranoid and wired on coke) reading every social cue or nervous tick, scanning every exit, noticing every tail.

mob!rafe HATES public transport. he'd rather sit in gridlock traffic in his own armoured car than feel the itchy, claustrophobic anxiety of a crowded subway or a stationary taxi. it's too exposed. too dangerous. you're a sitting duck.

sofia can read mob!rafe's mood based on his mode of transport. his pristine white Merc means he is peacocking and showy and wants to be noticed and seen and to drape her over his arm. his blacked out sedan with the driver means he's distracted. Either he's working or hungover and lazy. Either he wants to makeout in the back or he could be called away to Barry at any moment or both. Finally, his bike is her favourite. he's most himself when he can zip through gaps and cut down alleys and take her far out of the city away from the noise. He's completely anonymous, covered head to toe in gear. he blends. he moves and swerves in sync with the current of the city. he's invisible.

mob!rafe's biggest income streams are pushing drugs and rigging underground fights. sometimes he competes. sometimes he trains up others. everything goes into barry's coffers and their money guy divys it up accordingly.

mob!rafe is constantly at war with JJ, who just took over Luke's gang after his dad was killed. they HATE each other. i think JJ thinks he killed Luke (which he probably did at Barry's request after Luke ratted them out to Kie). to make matters worse, Sofia lives in Brooklyn, JJ's turf, and JJ never let's him forget it.

mob!rafe is all about excess. he's covered in tats and bracelets and rings and too many layers. his penthouse is full of soulless impulse purchases and art he bought while bored or high. It's Sofia and Barry that bring some warmth and personality and actual decor to the place.

mob!rafe is a snob and a hypocrite. he'll turn his nose up at bottom-shelf Jack Daniels but also have no issues killing his insides with cocaine. He doesn't understand how Barry can wear thousands of dollars worth of new threads and jewelry but drink shit beer. He'd much rather have the opposite. His clothes will end up smelling like sweat and blood and smoke anyway so why waste the money on something designer or expensive for himself? why care about silk or cotton or anything couture if you don't get the bragging rights of a designer label to go along with it? he cares more about status than quality.

mob!rafe is that classic trope of "the spoiled girlfriend" life. he will absolutely splurge on Sofia if she lets him. no cost too high. no gift too extravagant. if anything he has to convince her to let him splurge.

mob!rafe likes to pretend he's more experienced than he is until barry quickly realises he's the first man he's ever been with and sofia quickly realizes he's never had a serious relationship before and she's having to coach him through it.

mob!rafe doesn't quite realise that as he gets older he's slowly morphing into Ward. He moves out to Rumson in New Jersey with a mansion and a large estate and a dock and a boat. Barry has his own little sleepout when he's too drunk to drive home.

mob!rafe and sofia have one beautiful girl and four chaotic boys. while they might have waited before having a second child, they're so all over one another that who knows? maybe they had kids back to back to back without a breath in between.

sofia runs a tight ship, including keeping mob!rafe on a tight leash. he has to be home for dinner. he has to take the trash out. he has to make it to piano recitals and school plays. he's not allowed to talk business at the dinner table or have the weapons anywhere near the children. no amount of wealth or "business" with Barry will ever trump her desire for them be "a normal family".

i have an au in my head where whole DID get with Li and was actually happy for some years with her. and then she gets the disney character mother treatment. anyways whole has two kids! whose personalities are suspiciously similar to heart and mind. in every single way. um i don't have much time but small ramble anyway raymond "ray" apollo james - firstborn, he/him, 17. dresses in a kind of grunge style, although he does have a few dark academia elements too. usually locking himself up in his room with the excuse of studying. on the verge of an academic burnout. has too many notebooks. he's the only one who can read his handwriting. he used to keep his hair longer, held back in a ponytail like his dad. he keeps it short nowadays for comfort. dislikes how many candles di puts around the house.

diana violet james - younger sister, she/they, 15. mix of pastel and emo/punk? idk yet. usually called "di" or "divi" by those close to her. carries around that one hello kitty baseball bat. not really caring about her grades anymore, instead just trying to drag raymond into socializing now and then. loves collecting flowers and pressing them into scrapbooks. has a habit of getting into trouble for vandalism and sneaking out to restricted places. (usually graffiti. her tag is "SAPPHO". take a guess why.) hair is more wavy than curly because it's really long. however, when they cut it short occasionally, the curls are more prominent. surprisingly really good about self-care. she dyes it purple. has a bunch of silver jewelry and is Wiccan. really likes scented candles.

Welcome to the Chaos

Welcome to the Malloy household! As you may have guessed by looking at all the cheating and back and forth these four sims have gone through, this house is absolute chaos!

Just your average family, spoiled mac and cheese on the counter, kids on the floor, everyone's mad at the tv, and the dog is out of food.

And Korey (who seems to be the root of all the trouble) is fighting with our head of household Kasey. Kasey is with Korey's old roommate, Garth, now but, these two had a quick fling while I was in the Lum household. More like he ditched a pregnant Angela to get with her for a day and then moved on to Wanda, another household member!

Trish, gets along with everyone and Wanda and Kizzy mostly do as well. I haven't quite figured out who to move where yet, but it's pretty clear that by the end of this rotation, this household needs to be split up.

In the meantime, I got rid of the double bed in Angela's room so at least everyone will have their own bed. Even though I'm sure Wanda isn't crazy about Korey sharing a room with Angela, it's better than him sharing a bed with her! I was just finishing up when I heard the noise I dread most in my game...

No, no, no, no!!! Then ENTIRE neighborhood is running over! No! Go home everyone!!! Oh geeze! I really hope I don't lose any sims tonight!!

And there it is...Leaving a huge crater in my pretty yard, BUT at least the house is intact, and most importantly, no one was harmed.

Now to collect some space rocks and sell them for profit...muahahahaha!

Kasey looks DONE with the night and everyone else just went to bed, so I guess that'll have to wait until tomorrow. In hindsight, this was actually good luck, the extra money will help me divi up the household at the end of the rotation.

Hi!! Do you have any good non fiction book recs on Augustus?

Hey, yes I do!

Anthony Everitt's Augustus is one I highly recommend, all of his biographies are really good and this one is the one I revisit most often. I'm also partial to Augustus: First Emperor of Rome by Adrian Goldsworthy, and also a good chunk of his other works on Ancient Rome (Caesar, Life of a Colossus and Antony and Cleopatra are works of his that I also enjoy as supplementary reading). If you can find an English translation, which I think is available, then The Age of Augustus by Werner Eck is also pretty good. And while I personally haven't read it yet, Augustus by Patricia Southern is on my list and I've heard good things about it.

One thing I highly, highly encourage is to read the ancient sources. A lot of them are available for free online, since they're translations of very old works, and they're the basis for a lot of the information in modern biographies anyway. From those I'd really recommend Life of Augustus by Nicolaus of Damascus and The Life of Augustus from Suetonius's The Lives of the Twelve Caesars (ideally read all the sections of those because they're all interesting, but also be warned that Suetonius has a habit of sometimes just making shit up so if something sounds blatantly out of character he was probably just lying). The Reign of Augustus is a book that's an amalgamation of all of Cassius Dio's writings regarding Augustus, though unlike Nicolaus, who was a contemporary of Augustus (he and Augustus were both good friends with Herod the Great, and Nicolaus was apparently a tutor for Antony and Cleopatra's children, who were educated alongside and living with Augustus's daughter Julia) or Suetonius who was born at the tail end of the Julio Claudian dynasty's reign, Cassius Dio was writing 200 years after the fact and thus isn't as reliable as those primary sources. Also, if you wanna read anything that the man had to say about himself, this is a collection of all we've been able to translate of the Res Gestae Divi Augusti.

This also isn't a book about Augustus specifically, moreso about the Roman concept of the biography and literary works in general, but The Lost Memoirs of Augustus is not only a good read, but actually has translations of the sections of the man's memoirs that we've been able to recover (no I'm not still bitter about the fact that the majority of them are forever lost, why would that bother me, I definitely don't think about it at least once a month).

Next up is the Legacy United Doom And Destruction Collection. This is divied into a Mayhem Attack Squad 3 pack and 2 pack. The three pack includes Chop Shop, Barrage and Micromaster Wrecker Malleus Minotarus. The two pack includes Breakdown, Windsweeper, Targetmaster Ozone and Targetmaster Cleansweep. I'm going to say it, I really don't like any of these at all as they're just lazy repaints and remold. The worst offender to me is that Breakdown. Obviously, they were going for a Transformers Prime Breakdown so they just took their Bulkhead, swapped heads, made it blue and called it a day like what the lazy heck Hasbro? Bulkhead and Breakdown in TF Prime are not the same character at all and I am very disappointed that Hasbro just could be bothered to make a new mold for Breakdown. The two pack featuring Breakdown and Windsweeper has a cost of $59.99 with an approximate release of August 1st 2024. The three pack featuring Chop Shop and Barrage has a cost of $54.99 with an approximate release date of August 1st 2024.

As someone who has worked in fast food for much longer than I would like, this is unfortunately the norm, and I really wish it wasn't. Workers get commended for being stressed to the hilt doing all the work when they should have to. There should be a team there, and unfortunately, teams just don't exist in fast food right now.

If you've never worked in fast food, I'd like to paint a picture for you after the cut.

To start, you interview for this fast-paced job and are promised you'll have plenty of hours upon being hired. You're making at best minimum wage as a regular employee, an extra $1 (maybe) if you're a shift lead or assistant manager, and you're working with what you hope is a team of people who have their shit together.

Upon being trained, however, certain realities start to set in.

• You're not getting enough hours to make ends meet, even after a few months of sticking through it. Apparently, even if the business is doing extremely well, corporate won't give enough hours or labor allowance - yes, the store is limited on the number of hours that have to be divied up between workers on a weekly basis - for the manager to be able to schedule you enough for your hourly wage to matter. Let alone if that manager is biased and gives their favorites the hours they want while you get scraps. And that's best case scenario. Worst case scenario, you're not scheduled enough, but get called in to cover for other people all the time, which means you suddenly have to do a lot more than you signed up for, like pulling doubles or clopens (closing late at night to come back early the next morning to open).

• Certain shifts are ALWAYS understaffed - we're talking Covid Era skeleton crews still being implemented - and that's if no one calls off. And while very few people are calling off for legitimate reasons, the rest just plain don't want to do the work. Night shift will always have it the worst because they are chronically understaffed on purpose to save money on labor and no one else wants to work nights.

• You've learned about the policies you're supposed to follow - y'know, the rules? - but it seems no one who works around you cares about policy, which is supposed to help keep the building safe and clean as well as keep the food safe and clean. But if you specifically decide to follow everyone else's example and not care, you specifically get yelled at about policy.

• In most cases, you're likely to experience bullying from your coworkers cuz most just don't want to do their jobs, they want you to do it for them while they collect a paycheck and think they're superior to you because they're either older than you and or have been there longer. You talk to the manager about it, they let those people break policy and bully everybody, they don't care. You talk to the district manager, they tell you "well you'll find that at any store you go to," they don't care. Going up the chain by due process ends up with your manager yelling at you or getting on your case about why you went up the chain and still nothing has changes.

• That bullying is usually accompanied by harassment and uncomfortable topics at work that you don't align with and probably shouldn't be discussed at work. But reporting it doesn't get any results, despite your harassment course that everyone took telling you otherwise.

• Customers are outright rude to you, even when you're doing your best to make sure their food is fresh and ready for them. Some will insult you, others honk at you from the drive thru, others still will get food just to complain and hope for free food. In drive thru, you'll get cut off or ignored too often to count because people are in a hurry. You'll have some nice customers, but they will be few and far between.

• YOU ARE TIMED ON YOUR SERVICE. Corporate will always want service to be fast, and hence, there's a timer above the drive thru window showing how long it's been from the time someone pulls up to the drive thru menu to the time they leave the window after getting their food. And corporate doesn't care that if you're busy that time might be longer, it should always be no more than 2 minutes and 30 seconds in the morning and no more than 3 minutes 30 seconds in the evening. No exceptions. So if a customer is taking a long time to order, you can't be rude, but you are encouraged to bug them to get them to order faster because your time is running up and you could get in trouble for your customer taking too long to order, and depending on your store, you might not be allowed to pull them forward.

• YOU COULD LOSE YOUR JOB IF YOU DON'T SCRIPT PROPERLY. You know how you get asked a bunch of questions in drive thru? Those annoying questions about would you like to add this, would you like to upsize, would you like to donate? Yeah, fast food workers are required by corporate to run through the same script with every customer down to the very last detail and how you're told the price of your meal. They are required to up-sell you. If you, as a worker, don't script how they want you to, you could be fired. You might not like asking so many questions every single time, and the customers might clearly hate it or are fed up with being asked 100 questions, but now your job is on the line.

• There is so much to clean CONSTANTLY and on closing shifts, that cleaning is often on a time limit. You're expected to have the whole building clean every day before the end of your shift, trash has to be out before dark, and the list is looooong. So long that, if you get busy and there's not enough people to help customers to begin with, how do you ever get time to clean? (Some stores might be lucky enough to have some people just on cleaning tasks, but more than likely everyone has cleaning tasks at most stores) Especially when there's a policy that states that if a customer walks up, you are required to stop what you're doing and help them. Which is fine if it's a down period where not a lot of customers are around, but when you're busy, that means you can't clean till that rush is over. And sometimes rushes run up till the end of your shift.

• Being too good or reliable at your job can often end up with you in this poor woman's position, doing everything on your own and getting no more than a pat on the back for it if anything. Because being good at your job or reliable means management will often be quick to keep you longer or call you in when someone calls off. And if you're thinking, "well, more hours more pay," I'm sorry to say that more pay also means more taxes, so you'll still only get so much of that, and it won't matter in most cases. Overtime in fast food is a bit of a joke at this point because companies want to avoid overtime pay so that upper management can get their bonuses at the end of the year.

• New hires when management has explained there's not enough hours to go around can be both a blessing and a curse. Yes, more hands to help around the building! Less for you to worry about, right? Wrong. New hires often mean someone's hours are getting cut to give to the new guy or that someone's about to get fired as soon as the new hire is trained. And that's if the new hire lasts that long. Most won't last for one reason or another. The work is too hard or convoluted, the pay isn't worth the stress, they turn out to be very lazy or can't keep up with the fast pace of the job, they're still in school and need to focus, they're a teen and their mother for some reason wants to pull them out of work last minute all the time and insists they can't work certain days, they lied about their availability and or call off often. You get the point.

• You're often working with broken or breaking equipment, and corporate's being so cheap with their stores that they either insist your equipment is fine despite having broken down and setting you back, or will get the cheapest possible repair to shut you up for a while till it breaks down again.

I could probably go on and on about every single issue with fast food work in detail, but this is already a long post to begin with. This is also my experience with working in fast food. Most of it has been very much same experience, different stores, but there may be some stores running a whole lot better than where I've worked. That part, I'm not sure on.

All this is to say be kind to fast food workers. They are not working in ideal work conditions, they're lucky if they have AC in the summer, and they're just doing their best to get by and still serve you. Let them script, be patient, don't be rude or crass.

This poor woman should not have been stuck running a whole store by herself at any given point -hell my own store has a policy where at least 2 people have to be manning the store at all times - and honestly deserves a large compensation for her efforts and a decent paid vacation. A solo 12 hour shift, no one deserves to work that hard. NO ONE. Her management team should be fired and replaced for not helping her.

“no crew, no help, just pure hustle” cut to this poor woman bawling her eyes out. what the fuck is wrong with people? why is this being framed as a good or impressive feat? this person makes below poverty wages already. Burger King meanwhile takes in $27 billion in global revenue every single year. everyone involved in making this woman endure this should be tortured and force fed chicken fries until their heart gives out. fuck this country.
