THE DEATH OF JAMES BULGER BY THE HANDS OF ROBERT THOMPSON AND JON VENABLES LADY VARYS James Patrick Bulger (16 March 1990 – 12 February 1993) was a boy from Kirkby,Merseyside, England, who was murdered on 12 February 1993, at the age of two. He was abducted, tortured and murdered by two ten-year-old boys, Robert Thompson (born 23 August 1982) and Jon Venables (born 13 August 1982).Bulger was led away from the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootlewhilst his mother was distracted. His mutilated body was found on a railway line two-and-a-half miles (4 km) away in Walton, Liverpool, two days after his murder. Thompson and Venables were charged on 20 February 1993 with Bulger's abduction and murder. They were found guilty on 24 November 1993, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern English history. They were sentenced to custody until they reached adulthood, initially until the age of 18, and were released under new identities and on alifelong licence in June 2001. In 2010, Venables was sent to prison for violating the terms of his licence of release, and was released on parole again in 2013. CCTV surveillance from the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle taken on Friday 12 February 1993 showed Thompson and Venables casually observing children, apparently selecting a target. The boys were playing truant from school, which they did regularly. Throughout the day, Thompson and Venables were seen stealing various items including sweets, a troll doll, some batteries and a can of blue paint, some of which were later found at the murder scene. One of the boys later revealed that they were planning to find a child to abduct, lead him to the busy road alongside the mall, and push him into the path of oncoming traffic. That same afternoon, James Bulger (often called "Jamie" by the press, although never by his family), from nearby Kirkby, went with his mother Denise to the New Strand Shopping Centre. While inside the A.R. Tym's butcher's shop on the lower floor of the centre at around 3:40 p.m., Denise, who had been temporarily distracted, realised that her son had disappeared. Thompson and Venables approached him before taking him by the hand and leading him out of the shopping centre. This moment was captured on a CCTV camera recording timestamped at 15:42. The boys took Bulger on a meandering 2.5-mile (4 km) walk across Liverpool to theLeeds and Liverpool Canal where he was dropped on his head and suffered injuries to his face. The boys joked about pushing Bulger into the canal. During the walk across Liverpool, the boys were seen by 38 people. Bulger had a bump on his forehead and was crying, but most bystanders did nothing to intervene, assuming that he was a younger brother. Two people challenged the older boys, but they claimed that Bulger was a younger brother or that he was lost and they were taking him to the local police station. At one point, the boys took Bulger into a pet shop, from which they were ejected. Eventually the boys arrived in the village of Walton, and with Walton Lane police station across the road facing them, they hesitated and led Bulger up a steep bank to a railway line near the disused Walton & Anfield railway station, close to Anfield Cemetery, where they began torturing him. At the trial it was established that at this location, one of the boys threw blue Humbrolmodelling paint, which they had shoplifted earlier, into Bulger's left eye. They kicked and stomped on him, and threw bricks and stones at him. Batteries were placed in Bulger's mouth. Police believed some batteries may have been inserted into his anus, although none were found there. Finally, a 22-pound (10.0 kg) iron bar, described in court as a railway fishplate, was dropped on him. Bulger suffered tenskull fractures as a result of the iron bar striking his head. Dr. Alan Williams, the case'spathologist, stated that Bulger suffered so many injuries—42 in total—that none could be isolated as the fatal blow. Police suspected that there was a sexual element to the crime, since Bulger's shoes, socks, trousers and underpants had been removed. The pathologist's report read out in court stated that Bulger's foreskin had been forcibly retracted. When questioned about this aspect of the attack by detectives and the child psychiatrist, Dr. Eileen Vizard, Thompson and Venables were reluctant to give details; they also denied inserting some of the batteries into Bulger's anus. At his eventual parole, Venables's psychiatrist until he was aged 21, Dr. Susan Bailey, reported that "visiting and revisiting the issue with Jon as a child, and now as an adolescent, he gives no account of any sexual element to the offence." Before they left him, the boys laid Bulger across the railway tracks and weighted his head down with rubble, in the hope that a train would hit him and make his death appear to be an accident. After Bulger's killers left the scene, his body was cut in half by a train. Bulger's severed body was discovered two days later on 14 February. A forensic pathologist testified that he had died before he was struck by the train. The family of one boy, who was detained for questioning but subsequently released, had to flee the city due to threats by vigilantes. The breakthrough came when a woman, on seeing slightly enhanced images of the two boys on national television, recognised Venables, who she knew had played truant with Thompson that day. She contacted police and the boys were arrested. The fact that the suspects were so young came as a shock to investigating officers, headed by Detective Superintendent Albert Kirby, of Merseyside Police. Early press reports and police statements had referred to Bulger being seen with "two youths" (suggesting that the killers were teenagers), the ages of the boys being difficult to ascertain from the images captured by CCTV. Forensic tests confirmed that both boys had the same blue paint on their clothing as found on Bulger's body. Both had blood on their shoes; the blood on Thompson's shoe was matched to Bulger's through DNA tests. A pattern of bruising on Bulger's right cheek matched the features of the upper part of a shoe worn by Thompson; a paint mark in the toecap of one of Venables's shoes indicated he must have used "some force" when he kicked Bulger. The boys were each charged with the murder of James Bulger on 20 February 1993, and appeared at South Sefton Youth Court on 22 February 1993, when they were remanded in custody to await trial. In the aftermath of their arrest, and throughout the media accounts of their trial, the boys were referred to as 'Child A' (Thompson) and 'Child B' (Venables). While awaiting trial, they were held in the secure units where they would eventually be sentenced to be detained indefinitely. The full trial opened at Preston Crown Courton 1 November 1993, conducted as an adult trial with the accused in the dock away from their parents, and the judge and court officials in legal regalia. The boys denied the charges of murder, abduction and attempted abduction brought against them. The attempted abduction charge related to an incident at the New Strand Shopping Centre earlier on 12 February 1993, the day of Bulger's death. Thompson and Venables had attempted to lead away another two-year-old boy, but had been prevented by the boy's mother. Each boy sat in view of the court on raised chairs (so they could see out of the dock designed for adults) accompanied by two social workers. Although they were separated from their parents, they were within touching distance when their families attended the trial. News stories reported the demeanour of the defendants. These aspects were later criticised by the European Court of Human Rights, which ruled in 1999 that they had not received a fair trial by being tried in public in an adult court. At the trial, the lead prosecution counselRichard Henriques QC successfully rebutted the principle of doli incapax, which presumes that young children cannot be held legally responsible for their actions. Thompson and Venables were considered by the court to be capable of "mischievous discretion", meaning an ability to act with criminal intent as they were mature enough to understand that they were doing something seriously wrong. The child psychiatrist Dr. Eileen Vizard, who interviewed Thompson before the trial, was asked in court whether he would know the difference between right and wrong, that it was wrong to take a young child away from his mother, and that it was wrong to cause injury to a child. Vizard replied, "If the issue is on the balance of probabilities, I think I can answer with certainty". Vizard also said that Thompson was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after the attack on Bulger. Dr. Susan Bailey, the Home Officeforensic psychiatrist who interviewed Venables, said unequivocally that he knew the difference between right and wrong. Thompson and Venables did not speak during the trial, and the case against them was based to a large extent on the more than 20 hours of tape-recorded police interviews with the boys, which were played back in court.Thompson was considered to have taken the leading role in the abduction process, though it was Venables who had apparently initiated the idea of taking Bulger to the railway line. Venables would later describe how Bulger seemed to "like" him, holding his hand and allowing him to pick him up on the meandering journey to the scene of his eventual death. The prosecution admitted a number of exhibits during the trial, including a box of 27 bricks, a blood-stained stone, Bulger's underpants, and the rusty iron bar described as a railway fishplate. The pathologist spent 33 minutes outlining the injuries sustained by Bulger; many of those to his legs had been inflicted after he was stripped from the waist down. Brain damage was extensive and included a haemorrhage. The two boys, by then aged 11, were found guilty of Bulger's murder at the Preston court on 24 November 1993, becoming the youngest convicted murderers of the 20th century. The judge, Mr. Justice Morland, told Thompson and Venables that they had committed a crime of "unparalleled evil and barbarity... In my judgment, your conduct was both cunning and very wicked." Morland sentenced them to be detained at Her Majesty's pleasure, with a recommendation that they should be kept in custody for "very, very many years to come", recommending a minimum term of eight years. At the close of the trial, the judge lifted reporting restrictions and allowed the names of the killers to be released, saying "I did this because the public interest overrode the interest of the defendants... There was a need for an informed public debate on crimes committed by young children." Sir David Omand later criticised this decision and outlined the difficulties created by it in his 2010 review of the probation service's handling of the case. Laurence Lee, who was the solicitor of Venables during the trial, later declared that Thompson was one of the most frightening children he had seen. He compared Thompson to the pied piper

Covid 19 has accelerated the need for a new utilitarian architecture: Architecture for the vulnerable (like me)

This photograph shows your columnist requiring assistance so I could stand upright for more than one minute. Two physical therapists helped. The date was October 2019 when three times a week I drove my electric wheelchair (scooter) for less than five minutes from my Liberty Lodge residential hotel room down past the parking lot to Phoenix Rehabilitation’s Lycoming County Office in Pennsylvania, US. My younger daughter Amelia Altalena took this photograph while on a brief break from being a police officer on active duty in the South.

Today, in Covid-spreading Lycoming County,—where the worst has not YET happened—returning to physical therapy would be unsafe. For movement–essential for paraplegics like me– I have to create an in-room gymnasium of sorts. Nothing fancy. Sinks at a safe height so I can I can briefly pull myself upright and then safely return to the wheelchair.

Architects: When you design housing, do you keep such necessities in mind? Or do you design from an Americans with Disability Act or other government official standards created by people other than those of us who do not walk, hear, or see?

For nearly two years, I have lived at Liberty Lodge a three-story structure until April housing migrant construction workers and those in the oil shale industry. This summer, these workers had left. My hotel and the EconoLodge complex adjacent have become welfare hotels housing refugees from frequent downtown Williamsport fires and unsafe living conditions. Last month, a man living on my floor–four doors down— was arrested for heroin distribution. Daily the Pennsylvania State Police circle the parking lot writing down license plate numbers then followed by arrests. This new wave of my fellow residents who have not been Covid-19 tested has turned my residence from safe to dangerous to my health.

Dateline: Thursday September 3, 2020. Rural beautiful Lycoming County Pennsylvania, United States. After a lifetime of living somewhere else, this is my perch to learn from its rich architectural history.

Lycoming County—population 116,110—is also the dangerous perch:

+ where I live in a community with severely-limited pandemic testing

+ where health care workers have not been tested regularly

+ where doctors offices and hospitals do not have computer systems capable of handling the data demand of day to day let alone a pandemic

+ where mask-wearing and social distancing practices are openly defied; example. last week my health aide Frank Rasole Jr. (whom everyone calls “Frankie”) attended with his lady friend Jamie a neighborhood swimming pool where over 100 others bathed and frolicked at close distance–few wearing masks

+ where a decaying infrastructure makes inter-county Rust Belt transportation difficult; especially ( as happened not that long ago when I/) one is an ambulance speeding to the hospital and the ambulance is forced to stop because the shocks could not handle the potholes/

When I was a passenger in a central Pennsylvania ambulance forced to stop because the ambulance shock absorbers could not handle the potholes in the road, I asked the attendant to use my iPhone to take this photograph of the driver. N.B. For years now, the American Society of Civil Engineers has repeated given US infrastructure a D+ grade. In February 2020, Tom Smith, ASCE Executive Director. said, “Our nation is at a crossroads. Deteriorating infrastructure is not only impeding our ability to compete in a thriving economy, but it is also holding back advances to prepare us for the future. Each American family is losing $3,400 in disposable income each year – more than $9 a day – due to poor infrastructure. Modernizing our infrastructure is one of the only areas today where there is bipartisan agreement, and Americans were finally able to hear from the candidates on their ideas to modernize our roads and bridges, water systems, electric grid and more. We are thrilled many of the candidates have plans devoted to infrastructure and we look forward to working with our nation’s current and future leaders- in a bipartisan manner- to modernize our infrastructure and ensure that our country is sustainable, resilient, innovative and globally competitive.”

Who are the most vulnerable–most likely to die from the Corona virus

I am.

I am a 72 year old paraplegic who has survived cancer four times. Because my spleen was removed, my immune system is compromised. Plus, I am a paraplegic–unable to walk for the past 26 years. My daughters and granddaughters live hundreds of miles away. This year–2020– I had two serious surgeries–each successful despite a regional health care system incapable of handling the Covid-19 pandemic when it will soon strike the Rust Belt of Pennsylvania with disastrous consequences.

During my time here in Williamsport, county seat of Lycoming County, the Jewish community has been supportive (an understatement). Specifically, I am a member of the Orthodox Congregation Ohev Shalom, lover of peace. Ohev Shalom is the only wheel chair accessible synagogue in the area.

My original intention was to publish a photograph of the Ohev Shalom building, constructed in the 1950s. The reality is the architecture of the Jewish religion is the torah scroll. The torah is the first five books of the Old Testament; namely, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. According to the tradition, when Moses received the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai God also dictated the Five Books of Moses to Moses. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, Biblical scholars are united in concluding that was a long time ago, “16th and 13th centuries BCE to after 750 BCE.” Unfortunately, Moses’ transcription has been lost. It was not until between the 7th and 10th centuries of the Common Era (CE) that a compete text of our Bible (known as the Masoretic text) became available. The Torah scroll here is a faithful reproduction of the Masoretic text written in permanent ink on lambskin.Over the course of the year, all the words in the Torah scroll are chanted. When Congregation Ohev Shalom acquired this new torah scroll earlier this year, I told Synagogue President Larissa Simon I would write a poem to mark the occasion. Because of Covid-19 no celebration took place, no Passover sedar, no regular services. Given the age of our synagogue membership–several of whom are in nursing homes–the pandemic is likely to kill Congregation Ohev Shalom founded over 100 years ago.

(Don’t tell her.} During the years when I have been able to walk I have been searching for a powerful disability rights organization that eschews rhetoric and represents me. Susan Dooha’s Center for Independence for the Disabled (CID-NY) is my organization. Susan knows how to win. I am especially interested in her successful law suit against New York City’s homeless shelter system where she is empowered to make changes. I am hereby lobbying her to insist that all barbed wire fencing be removed from New York City housing shelters.

Let us pause on Rabbi Hillel’s questions and return to rural Pennsylvania

Last year, I became friendly with my next door neighbor here on the third floor of Liberty Lodge. My neighbor was a construction project manager for a federally funded project. He did not want to be identified; also, he regarded the project’s out of state architect as irrelevant to the design decisions he ordered his construction workers to perform. Here is the video I made of our four mile expedition to the Lycoming College building site in Williamsport.:

Lycoming County is 130 miles ( 209 KM ) northwest of Philadelphia and 165 miles (266 km) East northeast of Pittsburgh, IAs I write from RoomP 310 of Liberty Lodge, reality forces me to focus on these facts, Last month (August 2020), a thousand US Americans died each day–the highest rate in the world. Here in the US, an American dies every minute.

Twenty six years ago, when I was losing the ability to walk, I tripped on my feet

I fell against the couch (purchased impulsively after having admired it so) and dislocated my shoulder.

While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Amelia, then four years old, asked, “Daddy, does it hurt?” I wanted to lie to my daughter, but reality intervened. The pain from my shoulder came so quickly, that all I could say was “Yes.“

Here I stood a few years earlier with Amelia in my arms and my elder daughter Joanna (to your right). I did not realize I was about to become an architect,—paraplegia being the school of hard knocks in lieu of an architecture degree.

This is the house where I lived when I lost the ability to walk. There was no ramp, of course, to make it possible for me to enter the front door of my house. At first, I was able to climb my way up the staircase from the garage where I parked my car. Worse than the House was the neighborhood. The grocery in Durham, North Carolina ( just down the road) was inaccessible given the absence of sidewalks. Eventually, I began a book “Renovating Existing Housing to Make it Wheel Chair Accessible” with this injunction:

“When you become disabled in the suburbs where the vast majority of US Americans live, the best thing you can do is move.” Moving is what I did to the Silicon Valley of California. In the process, my interaction with the built environment caused ad hoc architect me to make me realize: To make a house a home, the house must comfortably interact with the workplace, the grocery store and other community making sites— requiring an ad hoc architect to become a PNC ad hoc town planner.”

Note: My next column will contain an e-architect exclusive: An hitherto unpublished chapter on designing a bathroom, the most dangerous room in the house for paraplegics like me.

Publishing disability perspective on e-architect

For ten years, I have been publishing for e-architect articles, columns and videos on my disability perspective.

When I began writing here, I thought of myself as an outsider to architects in effect saying, I may not be an architect, but I know people like me who cannot walk nor stand for more than one minute can make your design more more effective. It is in response to the deadly pandemic that I helped e-architect launch the first Architects for Change webinar series organized around Rabbi Hillel’s three questions. The remaining two questions will be discussed in the next column.

My hero Edward R.Murrow broadcast this 1960 example of classic investigative reporting.This documentary was broadcast on Thanksgiving Day where I watched it at my maternal grandmother’s apartment in Brooklyn. I was 12 years old at the time.Murrow’s documentary shaped my future career in measurable ways. Note the hideous conditions of farm worker housing. Little effort would find in Florida and Canada- where inadequate housing for migrant workers in danger of spreading the Corona virus have been reported. Think Black Lives Matter when you hear the words of a grower Murrow quoted: “We used to own our slaves. Now we just rent them.”

Coming soon to this column, Abraham Lincoln’s Washington. While pursuing the hotly contested Republican nomination in 1860, Lincoln gave a speech of his soon-to-be Civil War (1861-1865) Age which reverberates in our Covid-19 Age (March 2020 and for the many years that will follow)

First Inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln, March 4, 1861. (In the 20th Century, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who spent a lot of time changing things, moved the inauguration date to January 20th which is when President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will take the oath of office next year after a Democratic majority Senate and House are sworn in.

Architects take note and do something about the coming reality of billions of additional emergency housing dollars being poured into combatting Covid-19. As this 1861 photo shows, the Capital was under construction when Lincoln took the oath of office “to protect and defend the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. The following month, when the Civil War began, there was a lot of defending required to do and few resources left to do it. Even so, President Lincoln over the worst years of the bloody Civil War, made sure the Capitol dome was completed and expanded following the British in the War of 1812 who burned down the Capital (and also portions of the White House).

Washington DC was a malarial swamp at the time. President Lincoln could have cleaned up the swamp in the area now The Mall and cleaned out the mosquitos. The mosquitos may very will have given Lincon’s beloved son Todd the malaria that killed him. Princeton historian Jon Mecham insists that completing the Capitol (which happened four years later) was critical to the War effort whose purpose was to bring our country together.

Equally critical to the Covid-19 battle, Professor Meacham insists, is establishing the kind of strong federal process comparable to the US response to The Civil War and more immediately in daily comparisons to he bombing of Pearl Harbor. I will have you remotely visit my Capitol and the Washington DC designed by Pierre L’Enfant whih did not turn out entirely as he had planned.

Unfortunately they’re wider than expected, so I have to add in a pair of insoles to ensure my heels don’t slip when I walk.

In the morning, I throw on the shoes before heading to work and my first few steps are tentative. The rocker soles make me feet a bit like a gangly baby deer, unsteady on my feet. But much like a gangly baby deer, I eventually find my footing and gallop to work at my usual furious pace.

By the time I’ve walked (raced?) the 2 km to work, I barely feel much different from when I first put them on. Throughout the day, I felt a slight pressure on my toes (nothing out of the ordinary for a new pair of leather shoes) but no pain whatsoever related to the heels. That said, at only 2 inches, they aren’t heels, exactly. In fact, with the platform, they feel quite a bit like wearing a rather wobbly flat shoes that somehow keep me cantilevered off the ground, like a pair of delicate chopines worn by a 16th century courtesan.

But do they feel like wearing sneakers? Well, also, no. They lack the satisfying squish of a foam sneaker sole, and I’m not jonesing to run a 5k in them, but I wouldn’t hesitate to sprint in order to catch a bus either.

About a week after testing out the heels, I have a friend over who tries on the shoes and exclaims, “They feel so weird!” referring to the slightly precarious rocker soles that feel a bit like having a pair of rocking chair strapped to your feet until you get used to them.

Towards the end of the day wearing the shoes, when I arrive from work I feel none of the achiness that occurs after walking upwards of an hour in a single pair of shoes. And not only am I miraculously not in pain, my feet don’t even have that tired feeling that tends to come from wearing shoes in general.

Perhaps somewhat unsurprisingly, Dr. Liza sure knows what she’s talking about.

Good Morning Gentle Reader…. On my usual run to Malaga this morning, Sandra my wife is performing Cataract surgery on about ten patients .. The thing about leaving the house early this time of the year means we get to see the sun rise as we approach this beautiful city by the water… no matter how many times I do the journey I am enamored with the beauty of this place, so much to see and do, wonderful beaches, great restaurants, night clubs, shopping places, the list goes on and on.. it’s more than just a place the plane lands, and well worth a look…

MARVEL GET ITS FIRST OFFICIAL CHINESE SUPERHEROES……No it’s not Trump… The first ever Chinese superheroes have officially entered the Marvel universe. Aero and Lin Lie are just two of a batch of Chinese characters making their debut in graphic novels this week. Co-authored by Marvel and NetEase, one of China's biggest online comic platforms, they are a clear push by Marvel to attract more fans across the lucrative Chinese market. We may even see them interacting with Marvel heroes like Hulk and Iron Man. Lin Lie is the main protagonist in one of the new comics, which loosely translates as Warriors of Three Sovereigns. The story revolves around the 18-year-old boy who picks up an ancient sword to fight against Chiyou - a reincarnated villain intent on destroying mankind. The second comic, which translates to Cyclone, features Aero also known as Lei Ling - she's an architect by day, who happens to be able to control air currents. By night, she uses her superpowers to save her city from various villains. Aero, known also by her Chinese name Lei Ling, is able to control air currents Will we see them alongside classic Marvel characters. There's no official confirmation, but if you look closely there's an Easter egg in the first issue of the Warriors of Three Sovereigns - a picture of Iron Man's mask can be seen in Lin Lie's room. A sign Tony Stark and his Avenger colleagues could show up some time?

RICH LIST 2018: JIM RATCLIFFE IS UK'S RICHEST MAN…. A businessman who once lived in a council house near Manchester is the richest person in the UK, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. Jim Ratcliffe, who founded chemical firm Ineos, topped the list with an estimated worth of £21.05bn - after coming 18th last year. Two of the company's directors are also on the list, which ranks Britain's wealthiest 1,000 people or families. Jamie Oliver and fashion tycoon Sir Philip Green saw their fortunes drop. Mr Ratcliffe, 65, moved from the council house in Failsworth to East Yorkshire as a boy. He went to Beverley Grammar School, studied chemical engineering at Birmingham University, and got an MBA from London Business School, according to a Financial Times profile. His father, who was a joiner, went on to run a factory that made laboratory furniture, while his mother worked in an accounts office. Mr Ratcliffe's firm is currently locked in a legal battle with the Scottish government over its moratorium on fracking. His wealth leapt by £15bn in the past year - partly because of a revaluation of his assets. He is the first UK-born person to top the rich list since the Duke of Westminster in 2003.

MOTORISED SHED HITS 100MPH TO BREAK SPEED RECORD AT PENDINE SANDS…. The Fastest Shed has lived up to its name and beat its own record time, reaching 101mph. A souped-up motorised shed has broken its own land speed record on a Welsh beach as it hit 100mph. The Fastest Shed smashed its previous 80mph (129km/h) record for the fastest shed at a land speed event at Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire on Saturday. Owner Kevin Nicks said it was "marvellous" to hit 101mph (160 km/h) in what he said was the only road legal motorised shed in the world. "It couldn't have gone better, I'm so happy," said the 53-year-old gardener. Mr Nicks, from Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, spent more than £13,000 creating his bespoke shed on wheels, which now boasts a turbo-charged 400 brake horsepower engine that is more powerful than many sports cars.

MEXICO VIOLENCE: CLOWNS PROTEST OVER ACAPULCO MURDER RATE…. Clowns dressed in white marched down a central street in the Mexican resort of Acapulco on Monday demanding an end to the city's crime wave. With their faces painted and carrying signs reading "peace", they said that they were "tired of so much violence". They complained that they were losing business because residents no longer threw parties out of fear of becoming targets of crime. In April, 100 people were killed in the resort town. Officials said they had recorded almost 50 more murders in the first three months of 2018 than in the same period last year. Most of the murders are believed to be related to warfare between rival criminal gangs in the region. The clowns said they had been particularly shocked by the murder of a juggler earlier this year. They said that the rise in crime had spread terror in the city which had made it hard for them to make a living. Acapulco was once a glamorous destination popular with Hollywood stars but the high number of homicides has put off many tourists.

TAIWANESE FLAG ON BULL ARTWORK PAINTED OVER IN AUSTRALIA…. The blue and red Taiwanese flag was painted to represent the school's cultural diversity. An Australian city council has been criticised after it covered up Taiwanese flags painted by school students on a public artwork. The flags were painted on a bull statue displayed for a beef industry event in Queensland. Rockhampton Regional Council said it altered the work to reflect the Australian government's policy of not recognising Taiwan as a country. China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, which it sees as a breakaway province. The fibreglass statue was one of six school artworks commissioned by the council and Beef Australia for a week-long festival in Rockhampton, 600km (370 miles) north of Brisbane. North Rockhampton State School said students had created the design, which featured various national flags in the shape of fish, to celebrate the cultural diversity of their community. Two Taiwanese-born students painted the Taiwan flag, but last week, the council re-painted them so they were plain blue. Other flags were not altered. The council said it informed the school of the decision prior to the re-painting.
