Fighting games honestly peaked for me almost 20 years ago when Dead Or Alive 4 had a stage where you fought on the streets and had cars driving that could actually hit you.

On the 29th of December, nineteen years ago, Dead or Alive 4 was released in Japan and North America for the Xbox 360.

Dead or Alive 4 features an expansive roster of characters, each with unique fighting styles, and a dynamic counter system that emphasizes skillful timing and strategy. So, apparently, Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation is its own separate world from Dead or Alive 6 based on what Yohei Shimbori said in the leadup to the game.

Personally, if any game was its own separate world from the series, its actually Dead or Alive 6, not Xtreme Venus Vacation, considering that game ended up retconning a lot of the story for Dead or Alive 5 (particularly the DLC bits, most notably Honoka and Marie Rose seem to be complete strangers in that game at debut even though their respective DLC indicated they were already friends by the fifth tournament, Phase 4 isn't even a major factor in the game despite their blatantly setting up a major confrontation in the ending of DOA5, and Nyotengu and Ayane act like complete strangers when meeting each other in the DLC-add on to the story, and its even implied Ayane didn't actually mend bridges with Kasumi in DOA6 based on the latter's surprise at Ayane including her in a SOS message, even though DOA5 had them cooperating earlier, to say little about Ayane preventing Kasumi from getting herself killed trying to save Helena in DOA4 or Xtreme 2.).

Just another reason DOA6 in its current form was a big mistake... That and Shimbori clearly catering to the SJW mindset early into development.

Today's haul. Going through collection I noticed I didn't have DOA4 so thought I'll nab it when I can and purchased Dimensions to go along with it. Going to try and get one more game and happy to say collection complete, that being Dead Or Alive Ultimate for the OG Xbox. Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections for PS5 was on sale for a pretty good price. Really do want to boot up some playthroughs of the games, which I did try and do Uzumaki Chronicles but ended up shelving to pick up later down the line. One day I will. Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics happy to get on PS4. Originally got the Switch version as I wasn't able to get PS4 version at the time but I'm happy to own both now. And last but not least got a copy of Reboot - Daemon Rising & My Two Bobs on DVD. Thought it'd go nice with my copy of the Mainframe Edition collection. Been a hot minute since I've rewatched Reboot, definitely a rewatch in my future.

that gif of helena dead or alive i just reblogged reminded me of the first time i saw her ending in doa4.

at first i was kinda disappointed with it's story mode after getting hyped for it in doa5. character endings were lackluster, usually humorous and seemingly unrelated to the story. then i unlocked helena as the last fighter, finished the game with her and beheld this...

aerosmith blasting in the background, somber yet nostalgic atmosphere, she walks amidst the flames as everything is crumbling down as her whole life flashes before her eyes. she initiates the auto-destruction sequence and goes up to the roof to look at the stars one more time before perishing in flames. it was perfect.

the after-credits scene with zack saving her kinda takes away from the drama, but whatever.

i should start dressing like her. maybe when i break bad

wow who knew Zack was fun to play as. Plus all those times practicing counter holds certainly paid off in this fight :D
