When Donkey Kong Country was published, the character of Cranky Kong was introduced. While Donkey Kong is Donkey Kong as far as marketing is concerned, lore hounds know that Cranky Kong was revealed to be the Donkey Kong from the original Donkey Kong arcade game and its direct sequels, with Cranky being either the current Donkey Kong's father or grandpa.

This makes sense. On one hand, it gives Cranky a bit of legitimacy. On the other hand, it reflects reality. Those retro arcade games and modern console games are generations apart in terms of both technology and game design.

DKC was published in 1994. Thirty years ago, but just thirteen years after the original Donkey Kong. Cranky Kong shouldn't be reminiscing about the arcade days any more; he should reminisce about those drumming rhythm games or the racing game for the Wii.

Shino, your second member of the Elite 4 in the Pokemon Trainer AU

Shino is typically the second member of the Elite 4 trainers will face. Stoic and quiet, it would surprise one to find he is otherwise a very fair person, believing a win in battle to be from one's own merit as a trainer. Shino is also the one who tends to communicate to the rest of the Unova League building that Kris has gone AWOL, and will apologize for the lack of correct protocol. He may have bad RBF, but win or lose, you can guarantee he will be the Elite 4 member who gives trainers the most encouragement towards accomplishing their goals.

Shino is originally from Johto, but also has Paldean heritage. A little known fact about him is that despite his stiff visage, he's always down for a good laugh.

His team consists of:

Petra (Garbodor, female, Lax nature)

Velvi (Scolipede, female, Hardy nature)

Oleander (Venomoth, male, Bold nature)

Hemlock (Grafaiai, male, Quirky nature)

Nightshade (Muk, female, Gentle nature)

Jed (Amoonguss, male, Impish nature)

Some fun facts:

-Design inspos are obviously the ninja poison-type users, namely Koga and Janine, but there is a little Atticus if ya squint.

-Mentioned in the posts for a few prior characters that some polls were made to make certain choices in the AU I was unsure about, and Shino is a byproduct of all three! The second (Ghast's typing) and third (rock or poison trainer for the Elite 4) polls decided placement and type, but the first poll (who should be the fighting gym leader) actually also determined the character used!

-And that lucky character would be Ninja, the boss of the Durian Kingdom in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat! He was the only character who received a vote other than Karate (Kairo) in that very first poll so long ago now. I feel like it's obvious now why I went the ninja route for his appearance, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

-That being said, while I was able to find several different meanings for the name Shino in Japanese, here it's admittedly taken from "shinobi", which at its most basic is another word for ninja and all that entails.

-Shino's initial art (left) depicts him with his back to the viewer as oppose to facing them like the others simply because I thought it showed off the ninja motif better.

-He's the only one of the Elite 4 who the rest of the league has no idea what he does when not around others. Some comments lead one to believe he's just rather private.

-Despite this, Shino remembers the most minuscule but important details one will mention, like who prefers the flavor of oran berries over rawst berries.

-He's quite fond of card games! His favorite, at least to play with others, is called Mao.

-Even Shino cannot resist the call of a fresh baked pastry. Present him with a warm croissant with cream and watch him melt.

-As a child, he once got into a scrap with a neighbor's kid because they mistook Petra, then a trubbish, as a bag that needed to go to the bins. Petra was none the wiser and thought she was merely going for a stroll, but Shino was livid.

do you think bananza is nintendo's attempt to retcon donkey kong the third into being the original donkey kong. i know we have to wait until the full game comes out to know for sure but it kinda looks like that's what's going on

this is an explicit retcon of the RareWare lore. Cranky Kong is no longer the original Donkey Kong

Nintendo has been operating under the assumption that Cranky Kong's grandson always has been the original Donkey Kong this entire time and has literally never considered the lore RareWare established in the 90s to be canon

this is an explicit retcon of Nintendo's own lore. Pauline is no longer considered the same person as the Lady from Donkey Kong. (this, on its own, would not actually count as a confirmation that Super Mario is not Little Mario the Jumpman, but the most annoying fan theorists would take it as confirmation anyway)

it's not even the same Pauline as the one from Mario vs Donkey Kong and Super Mario Odyssey, she just has the same name and looks similar and is also a singer

Mario swears rarely but all of his friends have heard him say "fuck" at least a few times

Luigi don't like swearing but slips up when he's really angry or scared then immediately appologises

Wario make gross comments all the time and laugh at his own jokes, he tries to be clever but mostly end up saying variations of "fuck you" or steal Waluigi's ideas

Waluigi consider swearing to be an art form and is extremely creative with it especially when it comes to insultes

Bowser tries to keep a classy image and mostly stay polite but breaks down and yells slurs at the slightest annoyance

Bowser Jr swears when he tries to look tough and repeats words from his dad without knowing what they mean

In Donkey Kong Country, swinging ropes exist outside of time. The footage features several times the game is paused, recognizable by the movement of all objects stopping.

However, instead of resuming smoothly at the exact same spot after unpausing - as would be expected from any other game - the ropes seem to teleport around randomly when the game is unpaused (also moving DK and Diddy around if they were holding onto the rope during the pause).

The reason for this is that ropes run on an internal global timer that for some reason keeps counting even if the game is paused, despite no other physics-relevant variable behaving in this manner. This causes ropes to merely appear to be suspended when the game is paused, but actually keep swinging invisibly in the background. When the game is unpaused, the visual position of the rope simply "catches up" with its actual position that has been swinging back and forth all along.
