The interesting thing is…. from the glimpses of SOUL-less Kris we saw in Chapter 1 + 2, it was notable how…. strangely they seemed to move. We saw them walking with a sort of zombie-like gait that maybe implied they weren’t in full control of their body still, or maybe just that they were in immense pain.

It led to a lot of people speculating that Kris does need a SOUL to some level. Maybe the SOUL is Kris’ but we’re a foreign entity that has taken it over, or that Kris’ original actual SOUL has been removed and replaced with us. If Kris needed the SOUL to live, that would explain their slow, deliberate movements and also why they keep putting us back inside despite clearly hating being under our control.

So now, with Chapter 4 giving us a much better glimpse of SOUL-less Kris doing stuff… it’s notable that they seem… fully capable of moving ‘normally’. Angrily, but normally.

Even when they do the whole Creepy Zombie Walk thing they are notably faster than they seemed to be in Chapters 1 + 2

They can do things that require fine motor skills, focus and swiftness like playing the piano, handling glasses, and beating the shit out of us with a hockey stick and it's all animated as smoothly as most other Deltarune Animations. Not really implying effort or stiffness the way that original Creepy Zombie Walk animation did.

And while Susie only gets a brief moment to interact with SOUL-less Kris in the Normal Route

Noelle has prolonged interactions with them in the Weird Route (both on-screen in Chapter 4 and off-screen in-between Chapters 2 and 3) and... while she does note that they sounded 'weak and shaky' and obviously their behavior seems weird on account of the whole 'traumatized by the Unkillable Evil Time-Demon only they can see" thing

... There's nothing to really indicate that there's anything outright unnatural or 'zombie-like' about the way Kris moves and interacts with her while SOUL-less. Since this is the Weird Route, Noelle even note this is the most natural and Kris-like they've acted in the last few days.... until we take over again.

And now we know they can go without the SOUL for a fairly prolonged period of time. The Ominous Phone Voice of Probably Carol does tells them they need the SOUL, it seems unclear why.

So… what that means for SOUL-less Kris’ behavior before? It’s possible that even if Kris can operate without a SOUL, it still hurts like hell. So right after tearing out the SOUL they are in Maximum Pain and it's hard to ignore, causing them to move in a struggling and slow manner. But the more they go without it, they kinda get used to it and the pain fades into the background - allowing them to do stuff more-or-less normally.

(Basically Kris has Chronic Pain but the only Painkiller that works for them is Demonic Possession)

…Or, knowing Kris, maybe this… was all an act. They were only behaving like This because they knew we were watching. It is pretty notable that they walk around normally in the Holidays' Kitchen while we're eavesdropping on them and only swap to the Creepy Walk Animation once they notice us....

Maybe this is an act, either to make us underestimate the things Kris could do SOUL-less… or because they’re a little teen Edgelord so they just enjoy playing up the whole Soulless Zombie thing when they have a chance.

PROTECTION CHARM — POPPY PLAYTIME

SUMMARY: How the cast of Poppy Playtime would protect the player. PAIRINGS: The Doctor, Doey, Kissy, Dogday x Reader.

THE DOCTOR

✮ This man has eyes everywhere. His multiple feeds through the darkened hallways, due to his high tech security cameras and monitors. Although, he would 100% prefer to accompany you. This man is tall and strong. Harley Sawyer isn’t afraid of a fight.

✮ But, if Harley can’t be with you for some reason (working on a classified and undisclosed project with the prototype), he will send Yarnaby to protect you. Some protection is better than none at all, right? He’s still spying through the cams though…

KISSY MISSY

✮ Kissy is a lover not a fighter, which is one of the reasons she was so damaged in the first place. Unlike many of the angry, animalistic, and monstrous toy experiments roaming the abandoned factory, Kissy hasn’t killed anyone—and never will.

✮ However, if you’re in danger? She will pick you up with those long fuzzy arms of hers and run away as fast as she possibly can, her feet squeaking with every step she takes. It would be incredibly cute if you weren’t seconds away from death.

DOGDAY

✮ Dogday doesn’t like fighting, but will if he has to. In the past, he wouldn’t waste a second before attacking if he or someone he had grown to care about was in danger. But now that he’s lost all his limbs from the torso down, he can’t.

✮ It annoys him more than anything, especially now, since Poppy practically forces you to run a bunch of ‘mindless’ and ‘pointless’ (as he would say) tasks that risk your life—and he can’t be there to protect you, which scares him more than he’d care to admit.

DOEY

✮ When Poppy asks you to do her bidding and do small tasks for her, it deeply frustrates and infuriates him (specifically kevin, lol). Doesn’t she know how dangerous the factory is for a human? It’s dangerous enough for a toy already, and being a ‘fragile’ human isn’t much better.

✮ Doey understands your limits—which is one of the reasons he insists on going with you. What if the prototype attacks you, and you’re too exhausted to fight back? Doey is a very laid back guy, but as seen in chapter four, he can and will attack threats.

Taking another look the Chapters 3 + 4 Soundtrack, and I’ve been thinking about the piano plink that usually plays when you try and make Kris play the Piano being included and labeled

As a “Concert for You”.

And I have to wonder, does that mean “You” as in “you, the player”, as in "us", as in…

Before, a lot of people interpreted Kris ‘plinking’ as then being unable to play the Piano properly due to our clumsy control. Like, as long as we're driving their body along neither they or us have the fine motor skills needed for Piano playing, much to their assumed frustration. But after the events of Chapter 4, and then also the name of this "track"… I wonder if it's more of a matter of Kris not wanting to play the Piano when we're controlling them.

Playing the piano is obviously very emotionally important for Kris. When operating freely during the opening of Chapter 4, when they think no one is watching, this is one of the few things they do not because of the Plan or the orders of Ominous Phone Voice Probably Carol, but for themself (that and the Underage Drinking). Noelle has also reminisced about how they'd never let her watch them play.

"a concert just for me" also feels like a deliberate contrast to the "Concert For You". While Kris is too emotionally distant to let Noelle watch them play, as long as she keeps the boundary of staying in the other room, Kris can play beautiful music for her. But we're both the Amoral Time Demon that has taken control of their body and a patsy for Kris and Ominous Phone Voice Probably Carol's scheme. Kris hates us, so they just refuse to play the Piano when they know we're around and are angry we're even trying to make them do it.

That "Plink..." is probably the chronologically-earliest example of Kris' rebelling against our control via Malicious Complaisance. Like when we try and take a look as Asriel's room in Cyber World, for example…

We tell them to peek inside this room and violate their brother's privacy and so they 'peek' with their eyes closed. We tell them to 'play the piano' so they play one singular shitty note on the piano and technically fulfilled our command. The only way we could make them play anything else is with stuff like Chapter 4's Piano Puzzles when we're directing every single note and step.

So that makes that moment in Chapter 4 where they take control and show off their Piano Skills on their own even more powerful.

Because…. I think Kris still hates us, but this is clearly a moment done as a gesture of emotional vulnerability for Susie and Ralsei. This is Kris basically deciding that their hatred of us is not more important than their love for their friends. So they allow Susie and Ralsei to hear them play, even if that means also letting us hear them as well. For their friends, it's worth it.

But make no mistake, this is still the Concert for You.
