WPS Boys' Birthdays

making a post for this in case people have Thoughts, but: Depending on whether you consider WPS canon, the birthdays for furuya, hiro, matsuda, hagi and date can be narrowed down to 6 months (give or take) of the year, between beginning of october and end of march:

the police academy course for university graduates in Japan is apparently only 6 months long. and

Conan straight up says WPS is a story about boys who joined the police academy "in the spring" (narration at the start of WPS), so even if we give it a margin of doubt, they joined around late March tops. But-

Conan plainly states that the police academy primarily accepts students in April, and October. Usual academic years in Japan start in April too. So it's very likely that the course started at the beginning of April for them. This would place its end in September.

All five of them are said to be 22 at the beginning of WPS and still 22 again at the very end, when they graduate. So the months left for their birthdays are October, November, December, January, February, and March.

Falling cherry blossoms is the setting we see for matsuda and furuya decking each other in the face at the start of WPS. In Tokyo, cherry blossoms usually bloom in late-March and fall by mid-April (see e.g. here) So it places that scene somewhere between start of April and mid-April. If you take into account that Matsuda and Furuya's fight didn't take place on Day 1 of the course, then you have some leeway to include early April in the birthday range (but not much of April since cherry blossoms disappear by mid April).

Meanwhile, assuming that the course started in late March instead for an exceptional reason, then you might have leeway to include late September in the birthday possibilities (aka if they finish the course late September and immediately turn 23).

But yeah. As long as time did pass normally back then (and it could have, after all it was before Conan existed) that'd be it for them!

WPS is generally considered more "canon" than ZTT since GA wrote it , instead of just vetting the drafts like for ZTT. Of course GA can choose to retcon this anytime, but otherwise it seems those would be the months we can pick for WPS boys birthdays!

If you believe in horoscopes maybe you can choose according to that. If you dont believe in it maybe you can pick according to preference like "do i want him to be a winter, fall or spring child.... " idk. but in any case, that does narrow the possibilities down quite a bit for all 5!

— ^ i’m talking planning what the nursery will look like weeks after finding out. he’s already checking out fatherhood & child development books from his local library as we speak

liz is an actress and she lives in new york city, and she's been married for 3 years

her younger brother's name is leon turner-fallon and he's 2 years younger than her

he was really good at hockey since the day he picked up the hockey stick and he was instantly deemed the "golden" child

he played hockey at the university of michigan during the 2021-22 and the 2022-23 before getting picked by the new jersey devils in the 2023 draft

she's closest to her younger brother because they grew up together, liz moved away as soon as she turned 18 because she wanted to pursue an acting career

she's a daddy's girl for sure, but only because her mother loves coddling leon but she insists she loves her parents equally

Originally, the plan was for the Beatles to make an appearance on the show themselves, made up to look older.

The idea of a 50th anniversary reunion concert for The Beatles, then the biggest name in pop music sweeping the world, was also suggested. The intention was to have The Beatles, dressed as old men, perform in the studio as part of the recording of the episode. However, as Dennis Spooner revealed in 1985, the idea was turned down by The Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, as not being good for the group’s image.

Within the draft script for the episode,

Vicki gives the date for The Beatles sequence as 1994 although the TV announcer is wearing a ‘suit of the 21st century’; he introduces The Beatles performing on the 50th anniversary of their TV debut (which would have been 17 October 2012 in real life) and the broadcast is on ‘the tri-dimensional colour television service of the BBC'

Further, the costume notes for the episode 'described the TV announcer as being dressed in the fashions of 2014AD.'

As Brian Epstein turned down an appearance for the band on the show, the episode instead included a clip of The Beatles when the Doctor is showing his repaired 'Time-Space Visualiser', which can be used to see any event in history. The Doctor's companion, Vicki, from the 25th century, uses the device to watch the band perform.

The production contacted Top of the Pops on Friday 2 April, enquiring about obtaining material with The Beatles for The Executioners but discovered the most programmes were wiped after broadcast. [...] However, The Beatles were to record their latest release, Ticket to Ride, the following week at Riverside Studio 2 on Saturday 10 April for broadcast on Top of the Pops on Thursday 15 April. With the consent of Brian Epstein, one minute of this item was transferred onto 35mm to be inserted into The Executioners.

Due to the BBC's policy of wiping tapes of archived programmes, this clip within Doctor Who is the only surviving source of the Beatles' performance on that day. (...However this is clip is cut from episode on streaming services and DVD releases, which is why I had to go to a bad quality French sub on dailymotion to find the full episode)

Red Timeline (Pt. 2)

This is a very long post that puts all the songs on Red in order of Taylor making them, with as many specific dates as possible. I’ve also included other songs she wrote while writing Red and quotes from Taylor and her collaborators talking about her process. 

Because she wrote so much for Red, I’ve had to split this timeline into two parts. This one covers the songs she wrote in 2012:

📌 January 2012: Moved to LA to work with new producers

Taylor: "With Red, [Scott Borchetta] came to me in January and said, 'I think the album's finished.' This time, I said, 'No, it's not – I need to keep writing.'" Taylor: "I turned in 20 songs and I had this immediate sinking feeling, this can't be done, this can't be it. I think the reason I said that was because I made the record exactly the same way I made the last three. I knew I hadn't jumped out of my comfort zone, which at the time was writing alone and working with Nathan [Chapman]."

🟠 January 2012: Girl At Home

Girl at Home is a little blip in the timeline– it's the only song that was produced by Nathan Chapman in 2012. There's lots of ways you could speculate about that– perhaps she was trying to see how producing a pop song with Nathan would turn out, perhaps it's evidence for the persistent rumors that Girl at Home is a demo. Either way, I'm inclined to put it as early in the timeline as possible. Nathan Chapman posted some behind the scenes photos of the Red and Speak Now sessions on instagram. The one below was likely taken while she was recording Girl at Home– it shows Taylor in Nathan's home studio with bangs and straight hair, and the only song recorded in his home studio after she had cut her hair is Girl At Home. (She is also bundled up, adding credence to Girl At Home being recorded in winter. But then again, Taylor is fond of being bundled up, so I wouldn't read into it too much).

🟡 January 2012: I Knew You Were Trouble (First Draft)

Taylor: "I wrote this melody for this chorus on the piano." Taylor: "I remember bringing in this slow, sad thing that I had written, called 'I Knew You Were Trouble.' I had originally called it 'Trouble'" Taylor: "'I Knew You Were Trouble' was an idea that I got almost six months before I was scheduled to write with Max Martin, and I emailed him and said 'I just got this idea, I can't wait to bring it to you. I know that we're not writing for a few months, but I just, I need you to know, I thought of this thing, I can't wait for you to hear it.'"

Taylor first wrote with Max Martin in late April, meaning Trouble was possibly conceived as early as October 2011. However, it seems like she didn't know she would write with Max Martin until December 2011 at the earliest, so I'm inclined to place this in January 2012, six months before they finish writing Trouble in June.

"So far, I've been writing so much in the last year and the label keeps telling me, 'All right, we're finished; all right, we're satisfied; OK, this is done now.' And then I just keep writing and I keep turning it in in different versions [...] I'm going to work on it until I literally have zero time left to work on it, because I'm having so much fun working on this album [...] I'm getting to work with people that I've always wanted to work with, from all different places in music. I'm trying to be as much of a sponge as possible. You have to evolve and try new things and change and that's what I've loved to do with this album."

📌 February 15, 2012: Extra Tv Interview: 

"I'm really excited about the next record. I'm so excited about it. I've been writing it since before the last record came out, so there's been so much that has been amazing to write about, and you know right now I'm just having to pick from like the 30* songs that I have, that I love, and pick the best ones." [...] This has got to be the best form of revenge, just write hit songs about it. "Yeah, it’s not bad. But there’s the pressure of, like, it has to be good, and if it’s not, then your ex is kinda just like, "Ha-ha, it’s not good." So there’s the pressure of, you have to make a great record. And for me, I’m just obsessed with it when I’m making an album because I just want it to be better than all the ones I've made before, and I kind of compete with myself. I just drive myself insane with it." *Grain of salt: The amount of songs Taylor says she wrote for Red at different points doesn't add up, so give or take 5 songs.

🟢 February 29, 2012: Nothing New

In the below journal, Taylor mentions writing Nothing New on the plane ride from Sydeny to Perth. She arrives at the Sydney Airport on February 29, and was in Perth on March 1.

✍️ March 2, 2012: Lover Diary entry:

"I've been thinking a lot about getting older and relevancy and how all my heroes have ended up alone. I wrote a song on the plane ride from Sydney to Perth on the appalachain dulcimer I bought the day of my flight. I bought it because Joni played on most of her blue record. I taught myself to play 'A Case of You.' Anyway, I wrote a song on it called "Nothin New" and it's about being scared of aging and things changing and losing what you have. It says "I'm getting older and less sure of what you like about me anyway." And in the chorus it says "How can a person know everything at 18, and nothing at 22? And will you still want me … when I'm nothing new." It's a really vulnerable song, but I think it's important to say."

Taylor: "'The Lucky One' is a song that I wrote while I was in Australia. And it kind of talks about some of my fears, through telling the story of other people that I was inspired by. But, more than their stories being told... I'm pretty much singing about what I'm scared of."

Taylor was in Australia from March 1-14, 2012.

Dan Wilson: "With Taylor, we had been kind of circling around, very much aware of each other's work for a while. We figured out these two days to work together and she came to my studio super excited and said, "I had an idea in the car." And she sang me the first three or four lines of it and said, "I want to call it 'Treacherous' and maybe the chorus can go like this." And we were writing the song in 10 minutes and she was just so full of excitement."

Max Martin: "Me and Johan [Shellback] had our first date with her at Conway Studios. I was a little nervous, you know, the good kind of nervous. Maroon 5 was recording in the studio next door. This guy shows up, a friend of theirs. We literally haven't started the session yet. The guy says, "I heard that Taylor Swift's here. I gotta say hello". I was like, "Really?" and the guy says, "I totally know her, it's fine, we're friends". He walks in and it turns out that he didn't know her. And I started sweating cause I was vouching for that guy. He started talking about some ex-boyfriend of hers. It was really messy. He leaves and I apologize, but she was super cool, no problem at all. Then I asked what that was all about and she told me the story about this guy that she was dating. I can't remember exactly what she said, but she said, "One thing's for sure, we are never ever getting back together", and I said, "That's pretty harsh". She said, "No no, we are never ever ever getting back together". And we're laughing about it, saying, "That sounds like a song title". Then we started on something else. The next day, she said, "I thought about what you said", and she played us this idea that became 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together'. I was so mad at that guy who ruined our session, but it turned into love, cause it never would've happened if he hadn't walked in." Taylor: "It's a definitive portrait of how I felt when I finally stopped caring what my ex thought of me. He made me feel like I wasn't as good or as relevant as these hipster bands he listened to…So I made a song that I knew would absolutely drive him crazy when he heard it on the radio. Not only would it hopefully be played a lot, so that he'd have to hear it, but it's the opposite of the kind of music that he was trying to make me feel inferior to."

Taylor (May 15, 2012): "Eating cheeseburgers, scribbling on guitars, writing songs with @/edsheeran :)" Ed Sheeran (May 15, 2012): "In and out burger, defacing guitars and writing music with @/taylorswift13 ;)" Taylor: "We had both reached out to each other's camps at the same time. I showed up at his hotel in Arizona and we just wrote songs all day." Ed: "So the very first time we met… So I played Nashville, and her mum, Andrea, came down to watch me at the Ryman [...] and we sorta met after that in a hotel room in… I want to say like Seattle* or something? It wasn’t like Los Angeles, New York, L.A., Nashville, it wasn’t like that, I think it was Seattle?" So Taylor Swift’s mom Andrea introduced you? "Well, originally it was Frank, who was her radio guy, so that was the original meeting. And then we were in a hotel room, had some, I think we had burgers? Had some burgers, had a guitar, and we wrote this Run song, and I think like, part of another song?" *It was definitely in Arizona. Ed had just played in Phoenix, and there is no In-n-Out in Seattle.

Mark Foster: "We actually wrote a song that day [we were photographed]. It's a really cool song, you know? We kind of just went into it casually, like let's just jam and just have fun, and something really cool came out of it. So yeah, we'll see what happens with it. She's been writing a lot for her next record. But yeah, it was a lot of fun working with her, she's super talented."

🟢 May 27, 2012: Everything Has Changed

Taylor: "The first idea that hit me was this part of the song [...] there's a part on this song that goes 'I just want to know you better, know you better', and I got that idea while I was riding in the car with my friend Claire [Winters, probably], and she's talking about, like, 'Oh my God and then my sister says to me, this this this–' and she's like, 'What are you singing?' and I'm like [muffled] 'I just want to know you better–' and then the next day, I had demoed up the song with Ed, and she's like 'That's what you were singing in the car!'" Ed Sheeran: "When I landed in Los Angeles to record [Run], it was like the day before, she just said 'come round my house, we'll jam,' or whatever, and we jammed and wrote 'Everything Has Changed'. So those two songs were written probably in the space of two weeks." Ed Sheeran: "She has a little Taylor guitar, she got it out and she's like, 'I had this idea for this song,' ... and she pretty much had the verse, bridge and chorus done, but we argued about that one chord: "I just want to know you, better know you" – she didn't like that, and I kind of forced it upon her. It was quite a funny situation. [We were] surrounded by Grammys; she has like seven or eight, and like, Billboard Awards and Songwriting Guild, and I'm like, 'this chord,' and she's like [pointing to her awards]."

It's possible Taylor was flubbing the timeline a little bit, and actually came up with EHC while hanging out with Claire Winters on the 23rd, but it's also possible her and Claire hung out without posting it to Instagram.

Taylor: Taylor says she wrote that particular "big" chorus [...] on a plane, on her way to a co-writing session with hit making writers and producers Max Martin and Shellback. "I walked in and I was so excited about it, and I played it for them and they were like, 'All right. Let's do this!' They loved it, too," Taylor recalls. "It was really, kind of, an exciting moment for me...[that] they loved it enough to not really change much about it and just to build out from there, and to write the rest of the song."

Taylor: "I brought it to Max Martin and Shellback, and I said, "At the end of the chorus I just want this to go crazy. I want it to be really chaotic; I want the bass line to do this, like [makes loud GUH GUH GUH sound] [...] I don't really know what to call it, but I just kind of sing it how I want it to sound. And they're like, "Oh, sort of like a dubstep thing." And I'm like, "I guess, I don't know? Whatever that is, whatever that ridiculous sound that I made with my mouth when I was trying to figure out what to say." You end up doing a lot of that when you're recording and writing, being like "It kinda sounds like this! [Does a laser-y SCHOOM sound]." I wanted the song to sound as chaotic as the emotion felt. I wanted it to be loud and out of control." Taylor: "I was like, 'I don't know if we could have some kind of intense bass drop or something, like dubstep is really awesome…' And they were just like, 'Yes, absolutely!' And then Shellback was like, 'In the verse, let's do this really frantic drum beat.' And it just was something I would never have thought of; to make the beat of the verse really up-tempo, and then make the intensity drop off the chorus, and then have it build back up, and then have a production explosion at the end of the chorus. It was so thrilling! I couldn't believe the song started where it started and then their added ideas with production. They ended up seeping into my brain and I started thinking the way that I would hope they would think. I would write a verse and Max would be like, 'This is this many syllables, can you shorten it and make it more succinct, but convey the same message?' And I would just go off into a corner and I felt like I had this amazing assignment. So the challenge of it was so thrilling for me."

🟡 Early June: The Last Time

Gary Lightbody: "Her and Ed were recording the song they did on the record together in Santa Monica, about two blocks away from where I am standing right now. Ed invited me, with Taylor's permission, to come into the studio and say, "Hi." I'd never met Taylor. She said she was a fan. Apparently, the night before, she and Ed had been playing and singing "Set the Fire to the Third Bar" together. It was lovely to hear that she knew our music, you know. I can't remember if I was bold enough to ask if she wanted to work with me. But it might well have been me. Or if it was her who said, "Do you want to write a song together?" I can't remember. We wrote "The Last Time" together and that was great. The three of us collaborated on it really well." Gary Lightbody: "It was so fast. She works really fast. She's extraordinary. We actually did that song, wrote it and recorded it in a day. And that was the version of it on the record, which is very rare. Normally you write and record something with somebody and then down the line they'll record it, if you're lucky. With her, the whole thing was done in nine hours. I hope we can do it again sometime!" Jacknife Lee: "Taylor came to Topanga. Body guards, big black car. We wrote a song in a couple of hours and sang it sitting on the sofa. She had a handheld microphone. Then we had pasta for dinner and hung around with my kids. She left and I finished the song off. Owen Pallett [Arcade Fire/Final Fantasy] did some strings very quickly. [...] It was out of my field of expertise and interest, but I was intrigued and my girls were thrilled. Taylor was nice and very professional. She knew what she wanted and there was no fucking about."

This was definitely written after May 29, when Taylor and Ed recorded Everything Has Changed, and before June 10, when Gary tweeted: "Last day in LA 2dy. Have had a great time writing, relaxing & clowning." Taylor and Gary's schedules don't line up until June 3 at the earliest.

📌 June 10, 2012: Lover Diary entry:

"I've been in the studio non stop. This week I was in with Max Martin and Johan Shellback, the guys I wrote 'Getting Back Together' with. The first day, I had to do this corporate performance for an arena full of managers [...] When I finished there, I got on the plane and this idea came to me "I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22." I wrote the entire chorus on the plane ride to LA. When I landed, I went straight to the studio and played it for Max and Johan. They loved it. I was so excited. I wrote 22 about how much fun I've been having this summer and this year in general. It's so carefree and sounds like a summer anthem. I was floating on a cloud after we wrote it. The next day I brought them a chorus called 'Trouble' that's about how I should've known what I was getting into. We came back to 'Trouble' and it turned out to be absolutely amazing. It's so edgy and unexpected. It's almost dub step. My friends love that one the most. I love writing so much. It's the only thing that makes total sense to me. If I missed a day in the studio, I'd be so mad at myself. God I've been having such a beautiful life lately. I can't believe it. It's like there's magic in the air."

🔴Spring 2012: Unknown song

Ryan Adams: Adams [...] got a call from Swift while she was writing songs for her 2012 album Red, asking if they could work on a song together. "She basically already had this thing done [...] I just sat down and went, 'What about this?' And 'What about this?' We worked on a bridge, and we finished it. I guess I was the guy who could call people that would come in around 11 or 12 to jam."

🟠 Summer 2012: Babe

Pat Monahan: When he told Taylor that he wanted to collaborate with her on a song for Train's next album, she asked him to write a song with her for her album, Red. The track didn't make the album, but Pat says eventually, when Taylor puts out a deluxe re-released version of Red, "the song, I think, will be on there [...] It's a song called 'Babe,'" continues Pat. "So it's her song; I was just lucky enough to be a part of it with her, and I'm gonna ask the same of her in the future."

Pat could mean two albums when he says "He wanted to collaborate with her on a song for Train's next album"; California 37, released April 13, 2012, or Bulletproof Picasso, released September 12, 2014. Either one is a bit of a stretch. California 37 would've probably been wrapped sometime in early 2012– February, at latest. Taylor was still working in Nashville in Jan, but she was in LA in February, meaning it is possible for them to have worked together then. BUT we also have that Train tweet in April ("Last night @/taylorswift13 told me DRIVE BY is her favorite song right now. Took this long to get my speech back. Big deal 4 us! Thank u, T!") where they seem surprised that she likes Drive By, which was released in January– before they would've worked together. On the flip side, it would be weird to not only start writing for Bulletproof Picasso when they had just released an album a couple months before, but to be reaching out to collaborate. So just pick whatever feels less weird for you.

Espionage, the production team behind this, is based in New York, and are Train's longtime collaborators, meaning Taylor likely started working with them on Pat Monahan's recommendation.

📌 July 9, 2012: Finalized the album

Facebook: "Oh hey! I'm writing you from Nashville, where I just sat in a big room with a lot of people and made a lot of decisions about a lot of things happening very soon. And as vague as that sentence was, I think you know what it means. Stuff is about to happen. And I love you more than ever. Taylor"

📌 August 13, 2012: Album announcement

Taylor: "I ended up having to pick from between 30-35* songs that I had written that I really wanted to make the album. It was really hard to get it down to 16." *Grain of salt: The amount of songs Taylor says she wrote for Red at different points doesn't add up, so give or take 5 songs. In February, Taylor said she had written roughly 30 songs for the album. Taylor made 14 songs between that quote and this one.

that may or may not be an essay but since its structure is completely off, I opted to call it a rant.

Note: this is a long overdue post that was made prior to the release of the album, I have not changed anything within this because dammit my past self worked her ass off on this and just left it on the backburner for so long.

Now why does the second part matter? Well to me, if you put them together. Arrange by release date and track number, it almost sounds like a story on its own.

A person who has lost a loved one and forgot what the feeling felt like (Winter Blossom) until they discovered someone who could possibly mend their broken heart and understand the concept of "Ai" (A. I).

After finding this someone, they want to better themselves, become more reliable, someone who could be deserving of that love (Futari no Monogram). That love is returned to them and it feels a bit too much, but they're grateful that this person continues to stay by their side, despite being "broken" (Innocent Wind).

Like any relationship though, it was not just meant to be a sunshine filled story, they got into fights and arguements but that never deterred them from loving each other. Even during the moments they felt down or when he was scared of the passage of time, still uncertain about love, they still stuck with each other through thick and thin. And to understand these overflowing emotions, he wrote it into a song, a ballad, that sung the wishes of normal lovers and how with them, he can understand love. That he too, has that "something" on his chest (Mune no Kodou).

This emotional beat is followed by a happy and relaxing, definitely no underlying desires song about love (Synchronism).

being vague about the last one since I'll explain in each solo segment.

I think you guys get what I mean about the songs tying together to form a story by now right? Which is amazing to me, even if they most likely didn't do it on purpose, it gives a new meaning to listening to Ai's songs. Which make it even more fun to listen to.

So now onto each song and it's significance.

Winter Blossom

The first song by Ai is still as sad and beautiful as the first time I read the english translation~ I cried. This is a very straightforward song. They shared their last moments in winter.

To hide our kiss, we draw closer together to share warmth

and he wishes to God that he could feel the same emotions as her. She's about to go and he knows this, and he doesn't want to forget so he tries to stop his tears. He wants to remember this. Timeskip and he's all alone now with these memories. He doesn't think it's bad, no matter how sad it was, and yet he could only think about what else he could've done. He feels like he understands now, and he tells the words "I love you" even if she wasn't there, and his voice is only heard by the wind. He remembers the moment one last time, and makes a promise.

It's a tragedy that he only figured out what love is after she died. The song really moves me to tears. The hopeful message at the end is really nice and gives the listener a sense of encouragement.

A. I

Just lovers out on a vacation by the seaside. It starts off with him asking

“At what percentage does it become ‘love’?”

The night grows nearer, as you two get closer, and yet all he can feel is uncertainty. Unsure whether his feelings would reach or if he could ever truly express what he feels. Insecure about his own name, one he even called poor, you show him that there is a meaning to "AI". This fills him with happiness and he sees you as someone he can turn to, his warmth. He gives you a kiss. For now, in this moment, you will enjoy the time spent together, even if in the future you may fight. For now, even if he can't express to you all his feelings, the one word you taught him is enough. I love you.

I've always loved the play on words for A.I (artificial intelligence), Ai (love), and Ai (name) used for the song. See I don't understand Japanese writing much but I really wish I did. From what little I know it's amazing to see that Ai uses katakana アイ throughout the song. Katakana is used for loan words or when you want to emphasize something. So him using アイ instead of 愛 emphasizes that he REALLY doesn't understand "Ai". If you look through the wiki, there are like, 5 instances of the katakana being used. First is in the line highlighted above. Another is in "I want to confirm it, this thing you call ‘love’/tashikametai yo kimi no iu 'ai'" and the most important one. The last line of the song.

He actually learns what it means you guys. I'm proud of him. Another line that really got me in this song is when he keeps peppering you kisses because he was anxious. Baby, no, I won't leave you. I swear! Even if it takes time for you to understand, I won't let go!

the goldfinch by donna tartt timeline (theo's age with some speculation on calendar year)

full spoilers ahead. a shorter version of this post was already done by @boryapavlikovskys here (also acts as a TLDR), but i wanted to add more details/citations. this post will be super long on purpose. i've had this as a draft for a while but i wondered whether anyone still cared lol. this post by @hearts4popchyk inspired me to keep working on it and this post by @boryapavlikovskys (again :P) inspired me to actually finish and post it.

i didn't want to stop at how old theo is, i also wanted to see if i could pinpoint exact calendar years (spoiler: you can't lmao!!!) here's another post i found (ask by anon to @caramelbyblur) that's on track of what i originally thought, but still doesn't fully add up when you do the math (both anon AND tartt made the same mistake so don't feel bad!!!)

citations: for each quote, i'll use chapters, subsection numbers, and page numbers. the chapters will be 1-12 (1 = Boy with a Skull, 2 = The Anatomy Lesson, etc) and subsections will be lowercase roman numerals (i, ii, etc). i'm using a PDF copy (totally legal teehee), so my page numbers will prob be slightly off from printed versions, but the PDF has 800 pages so it shouldn't be too far off.

with theo being an unreliable narrator, anything he says is fair game to be skeptical about, but for this post let's act like the dates he gives are as accurate as possible until he contradicts himself (foreshadowing...)

finally, for non-americans, our school year is typically late august through late may, with the semester split being around mid jan. thanksgiving is late november. and this is prob universally known, but christmas is december 25 and the story takes place in the northern hemisphere (july = summer).

okay, now onto the timeline

theo is 27 when he narrates the book. we know this because he says his mother died on "April 10th, fourteen years ago" (ch 1, ii, pg 12), just before saying "I was thirteen" (ch 1, ii, pg 14). he was in eighth grade at the time: "If the day had gone as planned, it would have faded into the sky unmarked, swallowed without a trace along with the rest of my eighth-grade year" (ch 1, ii, pg 13).

before going further, let's establish when theo's birthday is. we don't know the exact day, but his dad says to him, "Now you’re a Cancer, hermit crab, all secretive and up in your shell" (ch 6, iv, pg 311), meaning theo's bday is likely between june 21 - july 22. for ease, let's say his bday is in the summer. every summer he ages up.

theo's mother dies on april 10, which is likely a wednesday, as deduced when he wonders, "Why hadn’t I insisted we get breakfast instead of going to the museum? Why hadn’t Mr. Beeman asked us to come in on Tuesday, or Thursday?" (ch 3, iii, pg 92). aka, if they had just been somewhere else, or called into the office a day earlier or later, everything would be different.

he goes home after the explosion midday on wednesday april 10 and waits for his mother. early the next morning, two social workers come over and place him with the barbours. he meets hobie and pippa. he stays with the barbours for only about 6-8 weeks, as his dad takes him to vegas right around the time the barbours' summer trip to maine starts: "Andy and I had said our goodbyes the day before; though I knew he was sad to see me go, still my feelings were hurt that he hadn’t stayed to see me off but instead had gone with the rest of the family up to the supposedly detested house in Maine" (ch 5, ii, pg 221). it is now early summer of theo age 13, and soon he will turn 14 and start 9th grade.

chapter 5 is theo & boris being gay no homo in the first half of 9th grade. we see them meet at school, get very close by october, fuck about a week or two after thanksgiving (implied), and spend christmas with theo's dad and xandra. i don't think we're meant to know for sure when [THEO SPILLS HIS SECRET] because he himself doesn't know, but if it's anywhere in the text, it's this first thanksgiving: "by the time we actually got around to eating, the bottle of vodka (Boris’s contribution to Thanksgiving) was already half gone and we were well on our way to being sick... Then I must have blacked out (an all-too-typical occurrence when Boris brought a bottle over)..." (ch 5, xx, pg 274-276). compare that to adult boris revealing he knew about the painting: "'Not that long after I met you!' His knee was going up and down like crazy. 'I think you weren’t used to vodka—you never knew what size to pour your drink. You came in with huge glass, like so, like water glass, and I thought: shit! You don’t remember?'" (ch 10, ix, pg 568). this would mean that their relationship was consummated AFTER the secret had already passed between them (i'd love to see an analysis on this from boreo english majors!!! something something the painting represents theo's soul something something he shared his soul before he shared his body...?)

then there's about a 9 month jump to the beginning of 10th grade. summer has passed, so he's 15 now: "And so the time passed happily enough; but then—shortly after my fifteenth birthday—Boris met a girl named Kotku" (ch 6, i, pg 301). theo's time in vegas falls apart as boris becomes distant, naaman silver comes, theo freaks out and puts the painting in his locker, [BORIS REPLACES IT], theo takes it back out, and his dad asks him for money. theo's dad dies the night he and boris take acid, which boris suggests they do "On Thanksgiving holiday maybe" (ch 6, xiv, pg 333).

theo takes the bus back to new york (relieved that he, a 15-year-old, can ride the bus alone) and arrives at hobie's a couple days after thanksgiving: "Well, tell me when you’re hungry, please. There’s loads of food, the fridge is so stuffed I can hardly get the door closed, we had people in for Thanksgiving" (ch 7, ii, pg 392). he spends ~6 weeks studying for an early college program.

"In January, I had my tests" (ch 7, ix, pg 412). this is probably the weakest part of the timeline, because a couple pages later, theo says "I’d been accepted for the spring term of my early college program" (ch 8, i, pg 420), and him being accepted to school a couple weeks after taking exams would be REALLY fast. however, he DOES say that he suspects he was only accepted because of his circumstances: "I grew more and more suspicious that the only reason I’d been allowed into the program at all was because of 'the tragedy.'" (ch 8, ii, pg 424), so maybe that explains it.

theo goes to school and ages to 16 as summer passes: "And so the time slipped by. The days were so much alike I barely noticed the months pass. Spring turned to summer, humidity and garbage smells, the streets full of people and the ailanthus trees leafing out dark and full; and then summer to autumn, forlorn and chilled." (ch 8, iv, pg 429). shortly after his 16th birthday, he rents the storage unit: "One gloomy afternoon, not long after my first fall term in school had begun, I happened to be alone in the house when Grisha stopped by to drop off some furniture" (ch 8, v, pg 432).

the time jump is where people seem to get confused, and for good reason

after the time jump, we open in the spring of theo being age 25, just about to turn 26 in summer. he meets platt, reconnects with the barbours, and starts dating kitsey. there are two pieces of evidence that lead me to this conclusion:

EVIDENCE #1: shortly after his meeting with the barbours, theo catches us up with his drug habits since the last time we've seen him. he says, "But at this point, in the spring of my twenty-sixth year, I had not been more than three days clean in a row in over three years." (ch 9, x, pg 484). this would make him 25 while meeting platt (in your "first year" of life, you are age 0, in your "second year" of life, you are age 1, etc).

EVIDENCE #2: theo says his relationship with kitsey "had happened really fast. Within two months of my dinner at the Barbours’, Kitsey and I were seeing each other every day practically... And four months had passed, and it was December, brisk mornings and a chime of Christmas in the air; and Kitsey and I were engaged to be married and how lucky was I?" (ch 10, ii, pg 519-523). so, theo and kitsey are engaged by december. their relationship happened really fast. december minus four months is august, minus another two months is june. give or take the fact that "months" are a ballpark estimate here, it makes sense that theo and platt could have met sometime around may or june, at the tail end of spring.

so again, he meets platt at age 25, turns 26 a couple weeks later, and is 26 while dating/engaged to kitsey.

however, theo contradicts himself when opening this chapter with "One afternoon eight years later..." (ch 9, i, pg 443). there is no possible way for us to have last seen him in autumn of age 16 and for it to now be spring of age 25 and have that be "eight years." it's 9.5 years. i'm willing to believe tartt did this on purpose, because i think the time jump is supposed to be disorienting. even before, when theo was renting the storage unit at 16, he says both that he thought of the idea after being at hobie's for eight months: "after I’d been at Hobie’s for an otherwise uneventful eight months, an unexpected solution presented itself" (ch 8, v, pg 431) AND that he thought of the idea "not long after my first fall term had begun" (ch 8, v, pg 432). these two lines are a paragraph apart, separated by a tangent about grisha. theo arrived at hobie's around thanksgiving, making eight months later around late july. BUT the beginning of the fall term would be late august. which is it? i think tartt is signalling to us that theo can't keep track of time properly or gets distracted when trying to remember. if he can't be trusted to tell the difference between 8 and 9 months, then he can't be trusted to tell the difference between 8 and 9 years.

back on track... that winter (age 26) he meets boris again and they go to amsterdam shortly before christmas. the parking garage incident happens. theo hides in his hotel room until he has his scrooge moment on xmas eve. christmas this year takes place on a friday. we know this because the next business day that theo can apply for a new passport is "Monday the twenty-eighth" (ch 12, ii, pg 730).

the book ends around thanksgiving(ish) again, theo now age 27, as he says, "Because it’s almost a year later now and I’ve been travelling almost the whole time, eleven months spent largely in airport lounges" (ch 12, viii, pg 776). circling back to his mother dying "fourteen years ago", he is rounding up, as it has been 13 years (april age 13 - april age 26) and seven months (april age 26 - birthday in summer - november age 27).

(i think it's a nice bookend that we see theo through 3 significant thanksgivings: when he tells boris his secret / loses his virginity, when his dad dies / he moves away from vegas, and when he chooses to end the narrative. it may seem more like a "christmas book" because of the climax but don't underestimate it as a "thanksgiving book"!!!)

calendar year & MATH

given that this book was written over the span of 10 years and occurs in an alternate timeline (where the met was bombed), it's hard to say "when" it takes place. theo flying from nyc to vegas implies post-9/11 because of airport security, but other than that, the technology and cultural references are all over the place. i don't think there's supposed to be an exact answer but if theo's mom dies on wednesday april 10 when he's 13 and christmas is on friday december 25 when he's 26, and (very important!) his birthday is over the summer, then we can try to map the events to certain years.

this is the trickiest part of this post for me because i'm worried about screwing up the math. i'm pretty sure i'm right, but i'm also open to feedback in case i'm being a clown. i'm going to walk through my thought process step-by-step and hopefully this will also help anyone who is also confused by the intersection between birthdays and calendar years.

with a "starting point" of 9/11 2001 (airport security), the earliest theo's mom could have died is 2002. april 10, 2002 was, in fact a wednesday, yay!

2002: theo age 13 (in april), turns 14 (in summer, is 14 in december)

ok, i think one of two possible things is happening. either i'm wrong about april 10 being a wednesday (theo never says "wednesday" directly, he just says it wasn't a tuesday or thursday), OR donna tartt and her team did the math wrong. i'm sure things were shuffled around in editing and it's very easy to assume that theo age 26 minus theo age 13 would make 13 calendar years difference but it's actually 12 because of his birthday. theo's mother dies in april BEFORE his birthday passes (the year he's 13-14) and christmas in amsterdam is AFTER his birthday passes (the year he's 25-26). so you either have to act like theo was 13 in april the year his mother dies and 25 in april the year he goes to amsterdam, OR like he was 26 at christmas the year he goes to amsterdam and 14 at christmas the year his mother dies. (funnily enough, the dates line up if you disregard theo's birthday entirely and do the math with 2002/2015, 2013/2026, 1996/2009. i'm assuming this is what tartt's team did, but it contradicts other times his bday/age is mentioned. at first i thought she was aiming for 2013/2026 because andy has an iphone, but then i smelled something sus and did the math myself... <- edit: this is silly lol, obvi at first i thought it was 2002/2015 because of 9/11 and general cultural attitudes. sorry, i misspoke here. but i'll leave it in bc the post has already been rb'd with tags referencing this line. in reality i think the reference to an iphone is a screwup that no one caught... just like all this math.)

(one final possibility is that larry is such a shitty father that he gets his son's birthday wrong. though i think that one's unlikely because theo would have had another "(what?)" moment.)

let's still try to salvage this... assuming i'm wrong about wednesday, let's build backwards from amsterdam christmas to april mother death. now april 10 can fall on any day except tuesday or thursday:

christmas is on a friday in 1998 (april 10 1986 is thursday)

christmas is on a friday in 2009 (april 10 1997 is thursday)

christmas is on a friday in 2015 (april 10 2003 is thursday)

oh dear... and it continues like this... 1981/1969, 1987/1975, 1992/1980, 2020/2008, 2026/2014, 2037/2025... all of these april 10s fall on a thursday. this combo of dates just isn't possible lol. theo's birthday really throws a wrench in things!!!

final note

there are multiple places online that quote this book as saying theo's mother died "April 10th, nineteen years ago" (instead of fourteen). where does this come from? is this from a press release or first pressing? was this corrected in later editions? how does this factor into theo talking about the barbours in the spring of his twenty-sixth year? is theo still a cancer in this possible earlier version? is this just one person's typo that everyone else copy-pasted?

in any case, doing the math with 19 instead of 14 means we add 5 to the calculation: theo is 31 at christmas instead of 26. there are 17 calendar years between april mother death and christmas amsterdam instead of 12.

using the same friday christmases as above, april 10 seventeen years prior will also fall on a friday, making this (questionable!!) version of events possible, though unlikely and atm unverifiable.

so in conclusion: when does the goldfinch take place? who the fuck knows. if anyone has anything to add, please do!!!!

First of all, BBB is, at its core, a challenge meant to promote and encourage creativity and community. Every writer who commits to the challenge and submits a rough draft by April 30 will be matched with at least one companion creator.

Writers will also have the opportunity to join our BBB discord server to socialize with fellow creators, discuss your work, and ask questions in a community setting!

Timeline of all major dates and deadlines for writers:

January 1 – challenge officially begins! Get writing! If you’re in the discord server, this is when we’ll begin hosting events such as sprints and informal check-ins to keep each other motivated.

January 31 – writer sign-ups close! This is your last date to sign up as a writer. No pressure – you have until April 30 to withdraw if you don’t get your rough draft finished on time. If you’re on the fence, we encourage you to sign up so you don’t miss your chance!

February 22-23 – first official check-in! One of the mods will reach out to you for a casual check-in to discuss your progress and answer any questions you may have about writing and/or the beta claims process.

February 28 – last date to opt in to receive an official beta reader! If you want someone to work with for the rest of the challenge, need help with any aspects of your fic, or just want some extra encouragement, be ready to submit a brief synopsis so a beta can claim your fic!

March 1-7 – beta claims window! Our beta readers will claim fics based on the synopses you submitted! We encourage you to start chatting with your beta early, to ensure they know the kind of help you need/the level of constructive criticism you’re comfortable receiving.

April 5-6 – second check-in! One of the mods will reach out to assess your progress and offer resources as needed. By now, you should have an idea of whether you’ll finish your rough draft by the April 30 due date.

April 30 – rough drafts due! These must be at least 15k, and you must have a solid plan for the rest of your fic so you’ll definitely be ready to post by July 1. This is your last chance to withdraw from the challenge if you can’t make this deadline.

May 1-7 – creator claims! Every writer will provide summaries and content warnings for their fics, and each fic will be guaranteed at least one companion piece from a primary or secondary creator. Claims happen in two waves, so you may receive more than one creator!

Following claims, you have one week to send your companion creator/s your rough draft, so they have the chance to read and begin brainstorming their creations. They won’t judge if it’s not polished yet!

June 7-8 – third check-in! One of the mods will reach out to you to discuss your progress and how working with your beta/creator(s) is going. At this point, you should be able to show that you’re on track to complete your fic before the deadline.

June 30- final drafts due! You will need to upload your completed fic (or the first chapter of a completed fic) to Ao3 by this date. Mods will be online to assist with posting and to cheer you on as you cross the finish line!
