Wheelie Wednesday from Drag Week 2017
True to form, Drag Week 2017 delivered plenty of excitement. There was no shortage of road trip breakage, battles for class wins, four-speed bang-shifting goodness and yes wheelies… lot’s a wheelies. Enjoy some wheelie action from Drag Week 2017.

Drove my Sunday car to work today and can’t believe it still has all the dirt and grime from #dragweek2017 . Still sporting drag radials and generic wheels and the bad ass @hre_wheels look like they haven’t been clean in years. Guess I need to get @minnie0527 to clean it up like she does on the #creamsickle , considering this was her ride at drag week. #amg #mercedesbenz #w219amg #allmotor #13second4door

2017 Drag Week-Race ‘em, Wreck ‘Em, Never Check ‘Em
HOT ROD Drag Week 2017, powered by Dodge and presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive
Drag Week is the most fun you can have in drag racing—unless you’re blessed with lots of cubic-dollars or significant luck. But as much as it appears like it’s fun, and it is, there’s also the work. Yes, the work that goes into swapping from street to strip tune, going 200-300 miles between tracks with clang, bang racecars in the hinterlands heat with no air, and the mental drain knowing your next run or next mile could be the last for this year’s Drag Week. Wrenching in the hot sun, under pressure, miles from the friendly confines of your own shop, fishing out lifters with coat hangers off a dirt road 120-miles from the next Drag Week venue, it’s both mental and physical pressure. We’ve assembled over 100 images of wrenching, reaching, ratchets and racing. Also, here are the many shots of just the engines of Drag Week, in all their gleaming, gooey, greasy glory. See for yourself how some of these guys have routed turbo exhaust, supercharger placement, relocated radiator supports for a little extra room, and marvel at how many applications there are for LS swaps.

Maybe the Best Award at 2017 Drag Week!
HOT ROD Drag Week 2017, powered by Dodge and presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive
Shifty Frank Romano will never give up his manual shift 1955 Chevy. If you talk to most people running manuals at Drag Week they’ll tell you their cars would probably run quicker with automatics, but then racing would be no fun. They love the brute strength, violation of their racecars, brutally banging gears barreling down the quarter mile. We did a short piece on three of these shifty Drag Week stalwarts so you can hear in their words what shifting means to them.
Frank felt there should be more reward to his and his fellow shifter’s quarter mile efforts, and so last year he came up with a shift-off at the end of the last day of racing, where those with manuals could race heads up to see who had the fastest arm. No awards were involved; it was all about the bragging rights. Of course Frank won. Over the last year Frank wanted to make it more coveted than to brag, and so to help goose the shift shoot-off he’s created this super-bitchin’ award with cast off pieces of past shiftcapades in his Chevy. His hope is that the “Shifty” will be passed on year-to-year to each winner, and that they will add their names to the perpetual trophy. We suspect every Drag Week entrant would love to have this—but you can only win it if you win the Shift-Off, which takes place later today on the last day of Drag Week competition.

More Pit Photos and Track Action from Great Lakes Dragaway
HOT ROD Drag Week 2017, powered by Dodge and presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive
Because they’ve suffered through more than 900 miles of interstate, farm road, and small-town gridlock, competitors get a bit of a respite on the final day of Drag Week 2017. Unlike the normal, early days they’ve been used to, the gates at Cordova Dragway don’t open until 11:00, and racing doesn’t start until noon. That’s all well and good for weary racers, but what about everyone watching at home? It just so happens that our track photographers worked overtime during Thursday’s racing session and in addition to the gallery we posted yesterday, we’ve got even more photos of the socked in Great Lakes Dragaway and the fierce competition that followed after the fog lifted. Live coverage will resume at noon.
Dense fog greeted racers at Great Lakes Dragaway.
The staging lanes were full, the track was prepped, but we couldn’t see to mid track. Racing was delayed for an hour and a half.
Darby Otto’s 1974 Firebird was involved in an accident just three miles from the track. A ratchet strap, a floor jack, a hammer, and some duct tape were all employed to coax the bent metal back into shape.
The nitrous-powered, mountain-motored Corvette of Dave Schroeder and John Ens has been the only car to maintain an average in the six-second range at Drag Week 2017.

Drag Week On the Road Thursday – Drip, Drip, Drip
HOT ROD Drag Week 2017, powered by Dodge and presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive
Wrapping up Day 4’s drive from Great Lakes back to where we started at Cordova, we’re near the end and it shows. Accomplishments, new friends, thrashing, and lots of sweat will be remembered for participants’ lifetimes. The HOT ROD staff was witness to very few breakdowns along the final day’s route. Was the cooler weather a major factor in less cars breaking? Are participants using the more expensive parts to avoid any excuses? Have they figured out how to improve their cars to last for five grueling Drag Week days? Or was Drag Week 2017 just an anomaly? With 20-perecnt of those that started now out of competition, Drag Week took its toll, despite the appearance of no on-the-road drama.
Drag Week 2017 will mark the end of an era of sorts, as over the winter the three year freeze of Drag Week rules will be scrutinized and tweaked. We’ve heard that the route next year could be less car friendly as our intrepid behind-the-scenes team is already finalizing the Drag Week 2018 routes. Will the rumors of GPS tracking become a reality to more easily keep track of participants wandering off of the routes, as well as giving family, friends, and fans of Drag Week the opportunity to follow each and every car from laptops and phones? All we can say for sure is that we can’t wait to see how Drag Week 2017 ends, while we all wish it didn’t have to end at all.

Drag Week 2017’s Stick Shift Shootout is Back!
HOT ROD Drag Week 2017, powered by Dodge and presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive
The vast majority of racing that happens on Drag Week is just about the e.t. Consequently, you’ll see cars spooling up turbos on the line long after their light has gone green and the driver in the opposite lane has launched. That all changes at sundown on Friday, as some of the quickest stick-shift cars created their own heads-up bracket in 2016 that we ran between Street Machine Eliminator rounds, which is also a heads-up elimination. The stick shift shootout made for some of the greatest battles at the tree and some of the most impressive driving, with the final race being won at the tree. For Drag Week 2017, many of the same drivers are back, and we expect them to pony up for the race. We got interviews and in-car video of some of the quickest cars that you can expect to see on Friday night’s stick shift showdown.

Drag Week 2017 Thursday Results
HOT ROD Drag Week 2017, powered by Dodge and presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive
DOWNLOAD DAY 4 RACE RESULTS HERE! (NOTE: IN SOME BROWSERS YOU WILL NEED TO RIGHT-CLICK TO DOWNLOAD A COPY)
Thursday was off to a slow start as a thick, soupy fog blanketed Great Lakes Dragaway. Racing was postponed for over an hour while the fog cleared as announcers Brian Lohnes and David Freiburger entertained the audience with some stories, history, and other antics.
Accompanying the fog was news of Darby Otto in his 1974 Pontiac Firebird getting rear ended only a few miles from the track. The rules do state that the cars must move under their own power to each track. However, in such a freak accident situation he was allowed assistance and ended up pulling a wheelie on track later in the day after heroic metal massaging.
The cool temperatures at the track lead to many strong performances. Dave Schroeder still has claim over the top spot after running a 6.75 at 196.64 mph with Joe Barry running 7.09 with a higher mile per hour at 199.42.
Aside from Jeff Lutz’s new 1957 Chevy and the “Dirty 30” driven by Nick Plewniak making passes for exhibition, there were also a handful of nostalgic pro stock cars making runs. Though nothing shatteringly fast by modern standards, we welcomed the throwback to a bygone era of drag racing.
All week there has been a bone stock looking 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up driven by Delbert Fletcher. He ran a 11.191 yesterday and 11.61 today at 121.58 mph, pretty surprising for a crew cab work truck with modern bells and whistles. At the end of the day, the Dirty 30 made a wicked pass of 9.21 at 143.51 mph. This was deemed the last pass of the day however, despite the Valiant Charger of John Faraone sitting in the staging lanes under the knife with some last minute repairs. Unfortunately Faraone was unable to run and had to withdraw from competition

2017 Drag Week Thursday Racing
HOT ROD Drag Week 2017, powered by Dodge and presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive
The unusually mild weather we’ve faced at the beginning of Drag Week continued on the fourth day of competition, but it wasn’t without consequences. The low temperatures made for a foggy morning and racing was postponed not because of the racing surface, but simply because of visibility. At 8:00, visibility from the timing tower was limited to just about the Christmas tree. Racing began at 9:30 with full staging lanes and wound down an hour later than usual, with most racers hitting the road after one or two passes. The biggest news was both John Faraone and Glenn Hunter, last year’s third place finisher overall, pulling out of competition. Faraone had ECU issues, while Glenn Hunter stripped a timing belt.
Matt Blasco’s engine turned a solid roller lifter into a solid flat-tappet lifter. Somehow the camshaft survived and he’s still in the hunt to be Drag Week 2017’s quickest Mopar.
The Hoosiers on Tom McGilton’s twin-turbo big-block 5th-gen ZL1 Camaro are putting in work this week.

Drag Week 2017: 1320 Video’s Wednesday Racing Recap
HOT ROD Drag Week 2017, powered by Dodge and presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive
Wednesday was yet another great day of racing at Drag Week 2017. Excellent weather made for some great numbers, as racers were laying down some solid numbers all day. It wasn’t all good for everyone thought. Some of the heavy hitters didn’t the numbers they were hoping for but still live on through the brutal challenge of Drag Week.
True to form, there were plenty of racers making roadside repairs on the way to the check point, fixing broken top end parts, transmissions, and keeping wheels from falling off. Follow 1320 along for the ride in this recap as they cruised in the thick of the road trip on Wednesday of Drag Week 2017.
