this dialogue hunts me. like what have you lost, aldia? do you feel bad for the horrible experiments you've done? do you feel bad for the state you've found your little brother, even if he locked you up, and then you specifically ask us to kill? do you feel bad for your bestie sorcerer that got possessed by some maniac and you knew that you couldn't do nothing about it? do you feel bad for the kingdom that you and your brother made together which have fell apart?

In Demon's Souls the maiden in black isn't just the one to level you up; she's also the one who binds your soul to the Nexus when you die, effectively trapping you so that you either must overcome and kill all the demons or slowly fade away.

And when the game is over, she uses you as a lure for the great one, says to it "Come now, be good" like it's a pet or a child, and she's the one to put it to sleep, saying "at last, at long last" as you walk away from her. She won't level you up after the last demon boss, because after that there's no need. She was never there just for you. You've served your purpose; it gives some interesting weight to getting rid of the Old Great One, that you can no longer use souls to empower yourself.

And I don't think we quite get anything like that from the level up maidens until Elden Ring, which is funny when you think about it.
