Eurovision 2005 - Number 23 - Наталья Подольская - "Nobody Hurt No One"

I'm not sure where to start with this one. There's so much going on, so many strands of comment-worthy information tangled together in this one Eurovision performance. Let's stick to the established order.

Наталья Подольская (Natalia Podolskaya) is a Belarusian singer who made her debut at the Vitebsk Slavianski Bazaar music festival in 2002. She found her way on to the radar of American song-writer Michael Jay, who wrote Unstoppable for her with the intention of her singing at the UK national final in 2004. Natalia however was for representing her homeland or nothing. She did indeed take part in the Belarusian national final that year and managed to finish second. 2005 brought her to Russian TV show Fabrika Zvyozd (the Russian Star Factory/Operación Triunfo). The producer on that show was Viktor Drobysh.

He wrote Nobody Hurt No One for Natalia to sing on Evrovidenie 2005 (Russia being more acceptably close to Belarus than the UK presumably). The other main song-writer here is Mary Susan Applegate. She is specifically the lyricist - and that's important. Mary Susan is a huge American lyric writer whose most famous song is The Power of Love, originally sung by Jennifer Rush, but covered by numerous other singers. Since that point Mary Susan has lived in Germany with one foot in the schlager-sphere and the other writing songs for the likes of Milli Vanilli. Nobody Hurt No One is the debut of both of these song-writers at Eurovision.

That brings me to the song. It is presented as a response to the Beslan school siege and massacre that occurred in September 2004 in which 334 people were killed including 186 children. It was an event that had a profound effect on Russia and you can understand something like that being the subject for a Eurovision song the next year. It's an event that needs a cultural response, and this is it.

Except that Nobody Hurt No One isn't about Beslan. It's about American school shootings including Columbine. The lyrics, by an American song-writer, explicitly criticise the USA for its gun culture and the consequences. Beslan, Russia, Islamic Terrorism, the Chechen War - none of that is mentioned even in passing. It's almost as if Russia was so traumatised by Beslan that it was easier to indulge in a defensive reaction against any possible Western criticism surrounding it, real or imagined.

It's a prickly song. A hurt song. It's also a Russian song being sung in Ukraine four months after the end of the Orange Revolution in which the Russian proxy candidate was beaten by an outpouring of protest from the Ukrainian people having initially won an unfair election. As you might expect in the circumstances, singing a song entitled Nobody Hurt No One in Kyiv, in 2005, representing Russia is going to result in boos. And there are a lot of them.

Musically, it's a downbeat guitar-filled rock song in a year full of upbeat pop numbers. Even the other rock songs are fun. This is morose. It's been a bad year for Russia, you can tell. I treasure the grungy gloom as an antidote to the sugar elsewhere.

It did however represent the mood of Russia and thus it won Evrovidenie and went straight to the final of Eurovision thanks to Russia's 2004 result. In that final, it was largely anonymous, getting points from the usual diasporic suspects and finishing in fifteenth place.

After this Natalia was not initially successful. Sticking with Viktor's music factory, she had a few singles out, but not as many as you might expect. Apart from the album that was released with her Eurovision song leading it in 2005, there was not much else. In 2010 her contract with Viktor expired, she got married, and suddenly she was performing and releasing music again. Since 2010 there have been three albums and at least ten singles. She's been on the Russian version of The Masked Singer and sustained injuries taking part in the Russian version of Dancing on Ice.

Viktor is a big name in the Russian music industry to this day. Since 2010 he's been an honoured artist of Russia, receiving his accolade directly from Vladimir Putin. Other artists have insulted him in song form (he sued them and won) and he's been accused of both plagiarism and copyright infringement on numerous occasions.

From a Eurovision perspective, he and Mary Susan are the song-writing team behind 2012's Party for Everybody, 2016's Help You Fly and 2019's Say Na Na Na.

In many ways this song is a footnote only in Eurovision history - even in the history of Eurovision 2005 where there many other things going on at the same time. It's not even the top ten most controversial things about 2005 currently. But it's an encapsulation of trends in song-writing, in how the music industry is developing and shaping careers and lives in negative ways, in how Eurovision is becoming increasingly exploited for non-musical purposes, and in how politics creeps in despite the EBU's efforts.

Se suele decir que Eurovisión es, en gran parte, política. Así que cuando el representante del jurado bielorruso no otorgó sus tradicionales 12 puntos a Rusia la noche del sábado, muchos se preguntaron si había un conflicto entre Moscú y Minsk. En su lugar, Bielorrusia dio la máxima puntuación a Israel. Y seis puntos a España, que con el punto otorgado por Rusia salvaron el honor de Miki y la delegación española en Tel Aviv. Para su vecino y tradicional aliado, nada. Las redes sociales rusas ardieron. Se habló de traición. Los medios analizaban qué estaba sucediendo. Tras la polémica, se ha sabido que el jurado bielorruso no votó en la final, había sido descalificado. En su lugar sus puntos fueron decididos a través de un sistema que la organización del festival de la canción se niega a clarificar. En Minsk y Moscú se habla de tongo.

La polémica en la votación de Bielorrusia es árida en una edición ya muy tocada por la controversia. Un portavoz de la Unión Europea de Radiodifusión (UER), organizadora del festival, explica que el jurado bielorruso fue expulsado antes de la final del sábado, después de que revelase en una entrevista –con el portal local tut.by– a quién había votado en la primera de las semifinales, algo que prohíben las reglas del festival. Pese a esto, la representante del comité de Bielorrusia, la modelo Maria Vasilevich, salió ante las cámaras a revelar los votos de su país. Los fans más eurovisivos ya sabían que el jurado bielorruso había sido descalificado porque la UER lo había anunciado en varios foros, pero muchos espectadores no. Tampoco se dijo en el momento de la lectura de votos. Cómo se decidieron esos puntos no queda claro.

“Se utilizó un resultado agregado aprobado por los auditores para determinar a quién se asignan los votos del jurado bielorruso”, explica en una escueta nota un portavoz de la UER . “En ausencia de un jurado, el resultado agregado se basó en los resultados de otros países con registros de votación similares”, añade el portavoz ante las preguntas de este diario. Sin embargo, la organización elude aclarar qué sistema se empleó, qué auditores lo determinaron, qué países se tomaron como modelo; tampoco qué regla de Eurovisión contempla una situación similar.

La situación corre el riesgo de escalar. Viktor Drobysh, uno de los compositores productores musicales rusos más conocidos, y en esta edición miembro de la delegación bielorrusa, ha amenazado con denunciar a la Unión Europea de Radiodifusión e impugnar toda la votación. “Han causado un gran daño a las relaciones entre Rusia y Bielorrusia, a la gente común y a mí personalmente que de repente me he convertido en el enemigo del pueblo ruso, que no recibió puntos”, ha declarado Dobrysh a la agencia Ria. El productor, que ha trabajado con la representante bielorrusa, Xena, afirma que ya ha puesto el asunto en manos de sus abogados y que están estudiando sus opciones.

Rusia (369 puntos) acabó tercera. Tras la ganadora, Holanda (492 puntos), e Italia. A los puntos del jurado profesional de los 41 países –los 26 clasificados y los que no– se les suman después los emitidos por el televoto llegado desde toda Europa y Australia –un país no puede votar por sí mismo–. Así que poco habrían cambiado para el cantante Serguéi Lázarev haber recibido 12 puntos de Bielorrusia. Sin embargo, el asunto está agriando su papel en el festival y levantando una gran polémica en un país donde Eurovisión se sigue mucho. Miki, representante de España con la canción La venda, acabó en el puesto 22 de los 26, con 60 puntos.

Entre la comunidad de fans eurovisivos bielorrusa y rusa –y también de otros lugares—están abundando las teorías sobre la polémica bielorrusa y sobre cómo fueron determinados sus votos. Como en los campeonatos de fútbol, los países participantes se dividen en grupos y una de esas teorías sostiene que los puntos bielorrusos se decidieron a través de la media aritmética de los menos votados por su grupo: Armenia, Azerbaiyán, Georgia y Rusia.

Además, el escándalo ha avivado las teorías de “rusofobia” que desde hace un par de años mencionan algunos medios, que acusan a los jurados profesionales de los países de no votar a Rusia por razones políticas. Su representante, que es muy famoso en Rusia y las repúblicas del espacio post-soviético afirmó el domingo que hay “algún tipo de prejuicio” contra Rusia. El país euroasiático suele tener más tirón en el televoto que entre los comités nacionales. Pero de nuevo entra aquí un factor importante que puede poner en riesgo estos concursos: el papel que pueden jugar los bots; las llamadas y mensajes automatizados. La semana pasada, uno de los canales de la televisión pública rusa tuvo que anular el resultado de la final de La Voz Kids tras descubrirse que había habido fraude con miles de llamadas y mensajes emitidos por bots.
