A Sirens Song

A siren’s voice can only be heard by those who will listen

There were many stories around the island. Watch out for the ocean especially at night. There were tales of a song so beautiful it lures you into the glistening sea. A song so vivid that you stopped in your tracks to find the source. The melody could carry you away from any place, any thought, and wake you from any dream.

You had moved here for the summer to spend time with your grandparents. Your grandmother gets lonely on the island wanting more girl time while your grandfather just likes having you around. You loved it here life wasn’t fast paced and the people were kind. The beach was your favorite part because the sand lit up at night. Bioluminescence was a beautiful thing.

Tonight was no different as you watched the water hit the sand from your bedroom window. The bracing winds flowing through your bedroom making your sketches fly gently across the floor. The feel of the bracing waves rumbling the ground. You stare out into the sea wondering what life would be like if you were a creature of the sea. That’s when you saw it, a head sticking out of the water. Was someone hurt?

You moved quickly to see if you were hallucinating. Your grandparents sleep long since the early evening none the wiser. You leave your shoes on the pavement and run through the soft sand. Your feet sinking in with every step as you reach the edge of the shore. You swore you saw someone. They seem to match the color scheme of the beach.

You waved slowly to see if they could see you. For all you know you could be going crazy and the mysterious creature wasn’t there. It’s mouth opened speaking to you but you stood there confused. You walked closer and the figure was a man. His hair surrounding him a beautiful bluish purple. His eyes a glowing bluish hue making yours widen. He lifts his hand out of the water to beckon you closer, a slow beckoning finger.

You walked closer like a physical pull to him. The closer you got the more he rises out of the water. He was breathtaking, carved by the Gods themselves. You reached out to him waiting to touch his soft skin. His fingers laced with yours, his intense stare burning through you. You felt a pull, a connection, like you knew him for a long time.

His mouth opens once more, it moves in different variations of the ‘O’ shape. You tilt your head at him confused, what is he doing? Has he lost his voice? You stare at his lips causing him to abruptly stop and hold your face to look at him. His stern gaze softens just enough for you to notice.

‘You can’t hear me.’ You read on his lips making you look at him with deer like eyes. You nod once firmly.

‘I’m deaf.’ You signed to him while also mouthing it.

His mouth slightly ajar as he stares at you. You can’t hear his song. He has never met anyone who can’t hear his song.

How did I do? This was a 3am thought so I really rolled with it 😅

can’t stop thinking about emperor zayne x future empress you x military official caleb.

knowing each other since you were young, growing up together. the young prince zayne visiting you every summer as your intended betrothed. you and caleb always running off to hide in the gardens. wild and carefree in the summer sun. 

and getting older, zayne’s visits become less frequent. growing even closer to caleb as your wedding comes closer. whispered promises pressed into your fingertips until you both leave, the fragile words shattered.

zayne is quiet with you, only offering his presence when you feel comfortable. he doesn’t pry when he hears your quiet cry before he knocks on your door. doesn’t push when you decline his offers for tea. 

and on the night of your wedding, when you’re both cast in the glow of candle light, he doesn’t sit next to you on the bed. he kneels in front of you, gently taking your hand and pressing one soft kiss to the palm of your hand before whispering to you, head low as if bowed in prayer. 

“i’ll bring him here, if that’s your wish. if it will make you happy.”

I did some investigating bc I was curious and kinda ended up down a bit of a rabbit hole

even though they use their thumbs, I think 'nose tap' could work for this gesture? it seems like it fits under TVtropes' (admittedly somewhat broad) description of 'Nose Tapping'

I also found this tumblr post about nose tapping (which includes a book* illustration showing the index finger tapping the side of the nose and describes it as "...as a way of signaling knowledge, that someone is clever, or a threat...")

also, I'm sure nose tapping as a signal is used in lots of other media, but it did catch my eye that on the TVtropes page that The Sting (1973) uses this trope, which had the same director (George Roy Hill) and starred the same actors (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), which has been directly referenced in another episode of dS (see this post comparing dialogue between RK and Fraser from MotB with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, thanks @thepunkpanther!)

I've not seen The Sting (nor Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for that matter), but based on a clip I found, the conmen appear to also use their index fingers (not their thumbs), but RK and Fraser seem to consistently use their thumbs for their version of this signal (Eclipse, Mountie & Soul, and Odds, thanks @sammaggs! for this perfect post of all three together)

Fraser does use the index-finger-to-side-of-nose version of the nose tap at least once (per @paulgrossaddict's post) but I can't remember what episode this is from or the context, if anyone knows (ha knows) please chime off! I'll be on the lookout myself as I make my way through my first dS rewatch(!!!)

3x07 Mountie & Soul | Promise

Right up there with the cold open to Perfect Strangers as peak due South action sequence. The choreography! The rooftop! The Headstones!

Ray and Fraser have been arguing a lot of instinct vs. logic this episode, but when the chips are down they are perfectly in synch.

They are SO TOGETHER here!! Their movements match exactly!! They’re toast.

I went down a similar path! I was also looking at bars (given some of the other decor in Ray's apartment) in Chicago (and Toronto). I didn't come across Harrigan's in my search, but there were a couple of places that caught my eye that I thought might have some fanon inspirational potential. Apologies for a long ramble below, I fell down multiple rabbit holes on this one

Now closed, there was a bar called the Hidden Shamrock (2723 N Halsted Ave in Chicago) that was opened in 1987. One of its owners was Michael Harvey (who is also a journalist and author). In 2011, they started hosting monthly literary interviews with local authors, obviously this part isn't relevant to the time frame of the show, but I liked the idea of a bar that Ray frequents having literary connections (he is a poet after all).

While I was digging around I found a reference to the bar in the internet archive that described it as being casual and shabby, with pool, darts, and live eclectic music (this link goes to a Chicago bar guide from 1994 on the internet archive). Also, per this guide, it's most outstanding feature was "Come in your sweats" 😆

I'd never heard of this band before, but the Hidden Shamrock was also the location of The Verve Pipe's first live show where they presumably performed songs from their first album I've Suffered a Head Injury (I went down such a wikipedia rabbit hole on this one)

I looked at Toronto too, for set/filming reasons, and I saw that there's a bowling and restaurant place called Shamrock Bowl and Restobar that's been open since the 1940s. Which made me imagine Ray and Fraser on a bowling date.

And I checked! Both Fraser and RayK make reference to bowling at least once in canon: "Well, perhaps we should just skip coffee altogether and go bowling" Fraser in The Deal and "...you can burn down my bowling alley, you can burn down my dance hall..." Ray in BDtH. (huh, a bowling rabbit hole, I wasn't expecting this one either) Maybe the first time they go, Ray tries to go easy on Fraser, only for Fraser to wipe the floor with him, thus birthing an intense ongoing bowling competition between them.

Also (if CoTW is to be believed) RayV also likes bowling! So it works as a date idea for Fraser/RayV, Fraser/RayK, Ray/Ray, and Fraser/Vecchio/Kowalski. (I feel like I'm trying to be a salesman for my weirdly specific bowling idea and I don't even like bowling very much 😆 I've only tried it a couple times and it hurt my elbow)

Lastly, I found that there were fan clubs for the Celtic Football Club from Glasgow all over the place (including Toronto and Chicago). Their official kits use a four leaf clover, but I did see shamrocks in some of their merchandise and related ephemera. I don't know if RayK is/would be a fan of soccer/football, but an interesting connection, the Hidden Shamrock claims that it was the first bar on the North Side of Chicago to show live European soccer matches.

Eclipses Past:

Eclipse grew up in a small village with his friend, Solar. Solar and Eclipse were close and always seemed to get along out of the sight of the villagers. Eclipse always had admired Solar and his 'honesty', what he didn't know is that Solar was telling villagers behind his back to fuck up his life. Solar wasn't as honest or truthful as Eclipse had known, Solar wanted power. More than half the week Solar would disappear in the villages, leaving Eclipse to sit alone at the tree and work out on the branches of the tree. Usually, villagers would stop by and pull his hair and hit him with bats. He was surprised to see it wasn't going to happen that day, as Solar approached the tree. He sent Eclipse to go get something from the bakery. Once Eclipse had returned, Solar was holding one of the untouchable gold apples and scarrscarfing it down. Eclipse had dropped the delivery and rushed over to stop him, but just as he approached - he had been flung into a wall. Picking up the apple that had come with him, he took a small bite from it. He felt his veins weaken as Solar stared down at him. Solar had two pairs of golden and bronze wings before he flew towards Eclipse and slammed his head into the wall. Eclipse was already feeling weaker than before, and this did not help. Solar dug into the others' skin and began ripping out some of his ribs, in which Eclipse shrieked while Solar taunted him. Eclipse used the magic from the apple to pull himself into a portal, stumbling and weak on the floor. He did not look very well, as blood poured from the wounds and his head.

Blunders Past:

Blunder was a next-door neighbor to Cyanide. Occasionally, Cyanide would stop by Blundrrs house bearing gifts or peaking through hid windows. Blunder always felt unsettled by the other but labeled him Blue. For awhile, Blunder dealt with it and then went to confront Cyanide. Cyanide didn't appreciate that the other didn't like the fact that he just wanted to be friends, as Blunder got ready to move the next day. Blunder stopped by Cyanides house to say his goodbyes, going but as he opened the door there had been cyanide laying opened on thr counter, with Papyrus on the floor. Blunder stepped back, Blue coming from the room and waving. Blunder immediately booked it, and Cyanide chased him - begging for forgiveness. To this day, Cyanide searches for Blunder to ruin his new life for running away.

1.) he's lying (again) and building up power within him or charging up his transdimensional star (most likely option imo)

2.) Absorbing star power for a cause unrelated to being all powerful (for what though? Turning it into negative star power for smth??? Idk mann)

For once, Nexus isn't losing

Aaaa hi sorry I'm just. Remembering now that Nexus entire function has been an uphill battle dealing with all of the shit Old Moon left him with, to the point that I think befriending Solar was the only thing he managed to do for himself.

Nexus showed up and was told he was Sun's brother-- and then had that brother be traumatized and twisted up with grief. Sun was stuck in his OWN bad place of "If I let myself be close to this new Moon, isn't that like saying I never cared about the old Moon? But there are things that are better, shouldn't I get to want that?"

And it sucks that Old Moon did so much damage to Sun that he couldn't bond with Nexus. The potential was there, but it had been ruined before Nexus even got a chance, and he could never get close to Sun on his own merits. That Nexus ended up finding his own brother instead.

I guess the instinct to push back against acknowledging that Nexus is closer to Solar than he is Sun is the fact that... it really does mean Sun is alone now. His twin died, and he's just by himself.

Idk man it makes me sad OTL I'm glad that they're not pushing OM and Solar to bond, just like I was glad that Sun didn't immediately accept OM back into his life as his brother.

I am also glad for the little reminders that "Just because Nexus is closer to Solar doesn't meant he wouldn't have also had a breakdown if it'd been Sun" cos sometimes I am dumb and feel like the implication is if Nexus cares about one he doesn't care as much about the other.

Also I'm really glad that Moon pushed Sun to be the one to talk to Solar instead of him because 1) I want to see Sun and Solar bonding but also 2) I don't think Moon should automatically be all buddy buddy with Solar and "replace" Solar and Nexus' relationship at all. Doesn't sit right with me and it's weird how many people I saw pushing for that. Thankfully it looks like they'll be going the opposite route with Solar not liking/trusting Moon, and Moon admitting to have some fault in why Nexus is like this probably doesn't help Solar's opinion on him.

But speaking of "replacing" relationships I think they almost always go. Badly. Going on a tangent here but trying to replace a good relationship like that and have them fill the exact role (which is what I saw ppl hoping for with OM and Solar in this case) is not healthy. It's part of why "New Moon" went so wrong in the end, trying to fill the exact role of someone he wasn't and failing causing him to spiral even more. Trying to make Sun and Nexus fit that same "inseparable duo Sun and Moon" relationship hurt both of them, it was better for sure but that's a low bar. And it's why I don't think it should be controversial to say Nexus had a closer relationship with Solar that didn't have that baggage, Solar didn't treat Nexus like his own Moon and Nexus built that connection with Solar himself vs just being told they were supposed to be close. Not to say Nexus didn't care about Sun, I think he would break down similarly if Sun died instead of Solar, but I totally get some people's idea of Solar being Nexus' "Sun" more than Sun himself.

So anyway yeah let's maybe not have Solar and OM automatically become close science buddies just because Solar and Nexus had that relationship. It would be unfair to Nexus and Moon, and wouldn't be a healthy method of dealing with the Nexus situation on Solar's part.
