29, Steph
Steph wakes up in a shed, sweat dripping down her face and sand in her toes. It doesn’t exactly take the world’s greatest detective to figure out something’s wrong.
And as she stands, she finds the biggest clue: Robin (sans mask, but it’s not like Steph recognizes him, so). Robin has just returned, to the best of her memory, a tiny twiggy kid. Word on the streets is that he’s not the previous Robin, which means that the old one is officially dead. Which is weird to think about, considering how Steph is making her own costume right now so she can run away and hit the streets to foil—no, spoil—her dad’s stupid crimes.
Wait.
She looks down and she is wearing the costume she knows she’s only in the process of, except cleaner and with more actual protective armor-type pads than Steph could afford.
Something seriously shady is going on here.
Steph bites her lip—and through her full-face mask, so she’ll stop that—and pulls down her hood. Why is she wearing a hood? The costume is bad enough, in what feels like ninety degree weather in what should be January, but the hood and the mask just put it over the top.
On second thought, she tears off her mask as well. At least now she can breathe.
She peeks through a convenient doorway with no door, and shrinks back. There’s only desert as far as she can see. How the hell did she get so far from Gotham?
Squeezing her eyes shut, Steph breathes. Inhale, exhale, which should be easy enough except when it isn’t. She needs help, and Robin is right here.
Steph kicks his leg. Is he alive? Did this one die not even two months into his career? Is it the Robin curse?
Robin’s eyes flutter open as he gasps, jolting straight up. Steph feels a pang of familiarity resound in her chest, but she has no idea why. Or why a name that’s not Robin is on the tip of her tongue, but when she reaches into the depths of her memory for it, she comes out empty-handed.
“Robin,” she says, hoping the fogginess in her head would clear up. “You awake?”
Robin pats the area around his face and his pupils dilate when he realizes he’s mask-less. He digs through his utility belt and applies a new one wordlessly, and then he responds, “Who are you and what do you want?”
Well, that’s a surefire way to make a girl feel welcome.
“I’m Steph,” she tells him, rolling her eyes and crossing her arms. “I was hoping you knew what the hell’s going on, because I don’t.”
Robin shook his head. “Last thing I remember, I was helping Batman with a case. To track down the Riddler. Where are we?”
Steph blinks and stares at him.
If Robin doesn’t know, how the fuck are they going to get home?
“In the middle of the desert,” she says, drawing out the words. “I woke up in here with you,”—she jabs her thumb at him—“wearing this, and I have no idea what’s going on.” She throws her hands in the air. “It’s actually kinda creepy, someone must have finished this costume, I wasn’t going to be done with it until next month.”
Robin purses his lips and stands. “That’s weird, because there are several compartments on my belt that I don’t recognize.” He catches her staring, because he is the only person for who knows how far, and he flushes. “So I’m in the same boat.”
“Good to know,” Steph says. “Do any of those new compartments have something we can use?”
“Uh,” says Robin. He presses a finger to his ear. No, actually, when Steph peers at it more closely, it looks like he’s pressing the grey piece of tech in his ear—comms. “Batman, come in. Batman, do you read me?” He shakes his head. “Nothing. No signal, I think.”
Robin glances down at his utility belt. “But I think it’s safe to say we’re dealing with some form of memory loss here. No real way to tell the extent of it, but it’s probably at least one month. Most likely more.”
Oh. Oh. That makes sense. So Steph did end up finishing the suit herself, probably. No creeps undressing her. That’s good. And now Robin is semi-competent. (And Steph is, most decidedly, not. But she woke Robin up, that has to count for something.)
“So we’re helpless,” Steph concludes, ever-so-helpfully. “But we can at least wander around the desert hoping there’s signal somewhere. D’you have a Bat-Canteen in that utility belt, or...?”
Robin rummages through his belt. “I’ve got... protein bars. No water.”
“Well, shit.”
Robin flinches at the curse, and Steph thinks, Oh, you sweet summer child.
“We just,” Robin tells her, pausing for a moment before his voice grows deeper and firmer in a way that sends a shiver down Steph’s spine, “have to hope for the best.”
“That we do,” Steph agrees. “And the longer we spend in here is time wasted, so let’s get to it, Boy Wonder.”
About an hour later, Steph and Robin are arguing about pirates versus ninjas.
Steph’s right, she thinks ninjas are cooler, duh. But Robin argues that Batman is like a ninja, and Batman is not as cool as he seems, so pirates. Steph finds herself letting her guard down, and letting herself be charmed by Robin’s nerdiness.
In return, Robin stops being all wide-eyed whenever she talks to him, and becomes sharper and wittier. Steph would be lying if she said she didn’t think he’s cute. He didn’t seem like her type at first, and he still doesn’t, but maybe he can be a type all on his own.
And finally, as Steph concedes to Robin after he told three embarrassing stories about Batman in succession, they come to a stop back at the shack they started from.
Steph shouts incoherently and punches the stupid (clay?) wall. She hisses and steps back, only to trip on a fucking huge branch, only to fall backwards. And if that isn’t mortifying enough, Robin catches her in his arms, and they have a moment staring into each other’s eyes. It’s not nearly as cool as it could have been, considering Robin’s eyes are currently covered by white lenses.
“I know we only met a little while ago, but you seem to be falling for me,” he jokes, grinning.
Steph scowls. “It must be hard with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pickup line.” Robin freezes and his arms pull back, leaving Steph to fall onto the ground with a thud. “I can’t believe you dragged me back to where we started.”
Robin is now standing straight up, holding his chin in the classic thinker pose. “We walked in a straight line in one direction,” he points out. “With no obstacles in the way. It’s highly improbable that we’d end up back here, so something is...”
“Oh yeah,” remarks Steph sarcastically. “We’re in the Matrix. Go figure.”
“We’re in a training simulation!”
“A training what—”
The desert fades away and so does the sweat clinging to Steph’s skin, which she now realizes, tugging at the not-damp fabric of her suit, was probably fabricated. Damn it.
And the last thing to go back to normal is her memories.
Tim is a fucking idiot.
She remembers him tiredly poking at the buttons, and he accidentally slammed down on the wrong one and what happened next was she woke up. And didn’t remember a thing. Blame the faux-Martian tech Bruce installed into this to make the simulations feel more real. That man has too much money.
“Oops,” she hears Tim say, the memories probably coming back all at once to him, too.
Steph knows Bruce is on a Justice League mission, and if it’s still today (not memory-loss-today but today-today, which is over a year later), he shouldn’t be getting back until tomorrow.
She locks eyes with Tim. “Not a word,” she tells him, and he nods. “If you don’t say anything about how embarrassing past-me is,”—she means, come on, ninjas? Pirates are so obviously better—“I won’t mention how bad your pick up lines are.”
Tim swats her and sticks his tongue out. “Says the one who says I have a bad case of the Stephs.”
“Yeah, but you love that one.”
“...no.”
Steph leans in to his face, thankfully sweat-free, lingers close to his mouth and at his awkward thumbs-up to the side, moves in for the kiss. It’s done quickly, but Steph still finds it hard to pull away.
And Tim looks adorably like a kicked puppy when she does. “See?” she laughs. “Bad case of the Stephs. That’s not a bad pick up line, that’s just fact.”
Like she would ever admit her pick up lines are bad. That’s like getting Tim to admit he needs sleep, and if he won’t do that, Steph can at least have her bad pick up lines.

A Ninja Warrior Love Story - Part 6
Whew, we are on part 6 already! In this installment, we learn even more about Lily’s past, specifically her dad. We’re starting to get into some more challenging, difficult topics so, bear with me!

The days following Lily and Henry’s conversation were easy. There was a natural rhythm that developed between the two. Lily helped him navigate the obstacles and Henry did everything he could to make her laugh. She found herself enjoying his sense of humor. The following Monday, both he and Tom weren’t coming in because of an early morning meeting for their movie in Dallas. Lily, surprisingly, found herself missing Henry a little. He texted her a little while he was away.
Be honest, how do I look? Attached to his message was an image of Henry with extreme bed head. His curls were fashioned in a haphazard manner, going every which way around his face and forehead. Lily cackled a little at the sight and replied.
I think you’ve found your new look, Merida! Smiling, she hit send and got back to her workout. It felt good to be able to actually work out for a change without having to worry about someone else. While she was working out, her phone started to vibrate in her pocket. Confused she pulled it out to find Henry was attempting to FaceTime her. Though it was later in the morning and other people were at the gym, she answered anyway since she had headphones in.
“Hey,” she said, her brow furrowed slightly. Henry smiled at her. She couldn’t see where he was, but it looked like a hotel room.
“Hello, Lily,” he said, a smile lingering on his full lips. Lily gently smiled back.
“And to what do I owe this video chat?” she asked, a fair amount of playfulness in her tone. Henry’s smile turned sheepish at the question.
“To be honest,” he started. “I wanted to see you,” Lily felt herself blush and she dropped her gaze. Henry cleared his throat. “So how is it at the gym without me?” Lily chuckled a little.
“Miserable. Absolutely horrible,” she replied over Henry’s laughter. “I’ve got nothing to do and no one to please,” she cracked a smile and laughed with Henry.
“Well, I’ll be back tomorrow to end your suffering,” Henry replied, still chuckling a little. Lily laughed then sighed.
“Unfortunately, you won’t,” Lily replied and watched as Henry’s face changed. “I won’t be here tomorrow. Since you’re gone, I decided there’s nothing left for me here. I’m leaving and never coming back. You’ll have to work with Celeste from now on for your training,” she smiled wide at Henry who immediately caught on and started laughing again. Lily smiled, enjoying the sound.
“Okay, okay,” he said, his eyes flicking off camera. “My assistant is here, telling me I need to start getting ready for these meetings. Have a good day, beautiful,” Henry hung up the call before Lily could say goodbye or process the fact that he called her beautiful. It set off a fire in her cheeks and a thunder of butterflies in her stomach.

Tuesday morning, Lily got up with her alarm but didn’t get dressed for the gym. Instead, she put on normal street clothes, grabbed her bag, and headed out the door. Before leaving town, she stopped in at a coffee shop a few blocks from the Hilton hotel for a cup of coffee. On the way back to her truck, she didn’t notice Henry who was walking Kal a few yards away. As she was driving off, her phone rang. She saw it was Henry so she answered.
“Hey Henry,” Lily said, sleep clouding her voice.
“Good morning beautiful,” he replied, sending that thunder of butterflies off again. “You’re off to an early start,” Lily paused.
“What?” she asked. Henry chuckled.
“I saw you leaving the coffee shop. Kal and I pass by there most mornings for our walk,” he replied.
“Oh, so you’re stalking me now,” Lily said sardonically making Henry laugh.
“Complete and thoroughly stalking you, yes. Your nightgown last night was lovely by the way,” he replied, causing Lily to burst out laughing. “Okay, well, I don’t want you to crash, so I’ll hang up. Drive safe, love,” Lily chuckled and said goodbye. After hanging up the phone, she channel surfed the radio for a while before finally deciding to play a podcast on her phone.
The four and a half hours it took to get to Wichita Springs were filled with the sound of her podcast and her own thoughts. Last week she decided not to go see her dad, not wanting to deal with all of that on top of everything with Henry. Once things seemed to level out, she decided to take the time and see him.
Lily’s dad, Thomas, was once a good man. He was always a good man, but he had a problem with alcohol - he liked it but it didn’t like him. After her mom died, Thomas grew fonder and fonder of the drink. Lily was eight when her mother died, which meant she had over ten years of dealing with a shadow of a man that was supposed to be her father. This was the first time he’d had a real chance at getting clean and sober, but based on her interactions with him, it seemed like he didn’t care. Without Carla, his life had no meaning. Lily wondered if he even cared that she showed up.
Hours later, she pulled into the visitor parking for the Wichita Springs Rehab Hospital. She was a few minutes early for the visitor hours, so she sat in her truck scrolling through her phone. She decided to text Henry.
So how’s training going without me? she hit send and checked her time. She still had over 20 minutes before she could go inside. Wanting to stretch her legs, Lily got out of the car and began walking around the facility. Her phone chimed in her pocket, so she pulled it out to read the message.
It’s a spectacular failure. Tom has decided we simply can’t make this movie without you. Lily laughed a little at the idea, then replied.
I had a feeling. I have a sixth sense about these things :) hitting send, she felt the overwhelming urge to see him again. Impulsively, she opened FaceTime on her phone, found Henry and hit send. The connection took a moment to establish, but a few seconds later, Henry’s sweaty, tired face appeared on her screen.
“Well this is a change,” he said, smiling at her. His blue eyes seemed so much more blue than Lily last remembered. Maybe it was the shirt he was wearing.
“Yeah, I have some time to kill before visiting hours,” she said, instantly regretting it. She’d had no intention of giving away any information, but she always felt her guard down when she was talking with Henry.
“Visiting hours?” he asked. Lily swallowed hard, panic setting in.
“Uh, yeah, um,” she started, stumbling over her words. Her eyes darted to anything other than her screen where Henry’s stunning blue eyes watched her. “I’m meeting my dad,” she finally got out. Every word and breath was caught on the roof of her mouth which was now as dry as cotton. She sniffled. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Henry bobbing his head.
“Oh,” he simply said. Suddenly his face contorted a little and he exclaimed, “Ow!” a black and white flash crossed her screen as Lily realized Kal was attempting to get in on the conversation. Lily laughed at the sight as Henry readjusted himself in frame. “I think Kal is jealous that I’m hogging the conversation with a beautiful woman,” Lily blushed a little at his comment. “Alright, Lucky Lily, I have got a wager for you,” Henry said, suddenly getting serious. Lily’s brow furrowed slightly.
“Okay,” she said, confused.
“If I can make it up the warped wall in one attempt, I get to take you out on a proper date,” Henry said. Lily chuckled.
“And what do I get if you don’t make it up?” she asked. Henry looked a little perplexed when suddenly, Lily had a thought. Her eyes lit up and she got excited. “If you don’t make it up the wall, I get to give you a shave.” Panic flashed across Henry’s face.
“I’m sorry, what?” he asked, a little dumbfounded. Lily cackled.
“Henry,” she started. “I’m a licensed barber. I’m one of four people in the area that can give you the closest shave of your life,” as she spoke, she realized she was giddy at the idea of being that close to Henry. It actually gave her goosebumps. Henry shook his head.
“I had better get up that wall,” she heard him mutter. She watched with amusement as he set the phone down facing the warped wall. And as he attempted a few times to get Kal out of the frame before finally settling on moving the phone. Finally, it was time to see who would get their reward. Lily watched as Henry placed himself at the start, got ready, then ran full-speed at the wall. Instantly, she knew he wouldn’t be able to make it up. Though Henry was clearly strong, he wasn’t built for speed. She watched as he gave his best effort though. His hands missed the top by inches and he slid down the wall in shame.
With his tail between his knees, metaphorically speaking, Henry walked back to his phone. Lily tried hard to keep her expression clear, but she knew her smile was ruining everything. Henry was breathing heavy and when he finally saw her smile, he squinted his eyes.
“You are so lucky you’re cute,” he said. Though embarrassed, Lily smiled wide at the camera. Henry laughed at her and even through the tiny camera, Lily could see that twinkle in his eyes again. She chuckled. Seeing the time, though, Lily realized she had to go.
“Well, times up,” she said. “I have to go,” Henry nodded and looked at her with those intense blue eyes.
“Okay, I’ll talk to you later,” he said. “Goodbye, beautiful.” they hung up and Lily felt a conflict of emotions. She was somehow very happy after talking with Henry, but she remembered where she was and why she was there.

Inside the rehab facility, Lily met the head nurse at the counter. She was a nice enough woman who clearly was exhausted by her job. Shelia, her name was, handed Lily a clipboard to sign in on. Then she asked for her ID and any personal belongings that could potentially be used as weapons. Lily handed everything over then was escorted by an orderly to the visiting room. It was a simple room with two tables, several chairs, and two windows looking out into hallways. She never liked this room.
After several minutes, the door opened and a younger nurse escorted her dad in. He was thinner than she last remembered. He had a serious amount of stubble on his chin and his eyes were bloodshot.
“Look who it is, Mr. Halliwell,” the young nurse said. “Your daughter has come to see you today.” Thomas’s eyes searched the room and when they finally fell on Lily, there was no recognition. It stopped being painful a long time ago. She stayed silent in her seat until the nurse had walked out and closed the door behind her.
“Hey dad,” she finally said, quietly. The man across from her didn’t acknowledge that she’d said anything. “How have you been?” she asked, knowing he wouldn’t respond. Thomas, however, was a man full of surprises, because he looked up from the table where he had been staring and replied to Lily.
“I’m tired, Lil,” he said, his voice shaky from lack of use. “I’m tired and I miss her,” suddenly Lily heard tears in his voice and she cringed. Her dad began to openly weep while Lily sat stoically on the other side of the table.
“I miss her too, dad,” Lily said. They sat like this for a little while, before Lily finally spoke again to do something to change the awkwardness. “I’ve been working at this gym in town, dad. I’m actually training actors for a big movie right now.” her dad had calmed down at this point. He wasn’t sobbing, but he was crying and sniffling. He looked up at her through his tears.
“You look so much like her, it hurts, Lil,” he whimpered before the sobs came flooding back. Lily sat there, uncomfortable, for several more minutes before finally telling her dad she’d leave him be. As she got up to leave the room, his crying and whimpering faded. Suddenly, he was angry in his seat. “That’s right, do what you always do. Leave me, just like your mother did,” his words dripped with venom and hate. Lily stood at the door, agony and anger holding her in place. She took in a breath, opened the door, and walked out without another word to the man. Back at the nurses’ station, she picked up her belongings. another nurse was there now and asking her questions.
“Is that your dad that you always come to see?” she asked. Her name tag said, Rachel. Lily nodded. “That’s so sweet that you come to check on him. Some of these folks don’t have anyone. Isn’t that sad?” Rachel the nurse asked. Lily wanted to tell her what’s sad was having a father less than 2 feet in front of you but he never actually saw you. Instead, she pushed her lips together and nodded stiffly.
Walking out of the hospital, Lily checked her phone to find three missed messages from Henry and one from her best friend, Mar. From Henry, it was two pictures of Kal looking at the camera with a very unimpressed expression. Henry sent the message,
He’s very concerned about this shave I have to undergo. A small smile escaped Lily’s lips as she read it, then went back to the images of Kal. They were in Henry’s hotel room which looked massive and spectacular. Lily was positive it was bigger and nicer than her own apartment. Going back to his message, Lily responded,
Tell Kal not to worry, I’m a master of my craft. She hit send, then went to read Mar’s message.
Hola chica! Don told me you were going to see your dad today, so I’m checking in to make sure you’re good. I’m about to go into class, so call me when you get home. I’ll probably be out of class “studying” by then. Love you!
Sighing, Lily climbed into her truck and drove home.

Hours later, back in her cramped apartment, Lily sat on her couch as the light dimmed from bright to sunset, to darkness. Finally, she decided to call Mar. After two rings, the line picked up.
“About damn time, Lily pad, I was getting worried!” Mar said in place of a regular hello. Lily smiled.
“Hey Mar’s bar,” she replied. Everything must have been in her voice because right away, Mar knew something was up.
“Hey, what’s going on?” she asked, her tone turning serious. Lily took a deep breath before finally spilling everything. She told Mar about Henry and Tom, the evening of betrayal, her sort of reconciliation with Henry, and finally the visit with her dad. She cried hard for the first time in a while and Mar let her get it all out.
“Oh Lily pad,” Mar said when she was finally done. Lily sniffled, the tears flowing freely at this point. “Babe, you gotta get out of there,” Mar said. Lily heavily sighed.
“Why does everyone keep saying that?” she asked, even though it was more of a whine.
“Because you’re going to die in that middle of nowhere town!” Mar exclaimed. “You stay there because you have some twisted obligation to a man that didn’t raise you and a family that isn’t really yours,” Mar stopped. “I know I’m being harsh, but you’ve been there way too long. Get on a plane, get out, and don’t look back.”

ALONG WITH THE GODS: THE TWO WORLDS/WITH GOD

With a spin on reincarnation, Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds, gives us a different take on what occurs in the After-world following one’s death. This movie is based on the web comic Singwa Hamgge, more specifically the Afterlife episode of this series.
Stacked with a stellar cast, this film brings exceptional performances, as well as an interesting story-line, that you’ll find yourself getting into the movie as the plot moves along.

The opening scenes introduces us to Kim Ja Hong in his element, a dedicated firefighter whose bravery can be seen in his actions as he goes back and forth from a burning building. From the very first minutes, there is much action which will attract your attention, however things get even more interesting when Kim Ja Hong dies.
The interesting thing about this movie is that it answers the question of what happens when one dies? While I’ve never died before (this sounds so weird), I think that Kim Ja Hong’s reaction to his death is spot on; the disbelief, fear, and confusion can be seen throughout the opening scenes.
Somehow this all feels a bit relatable.

Kim Ja Hong is considered as an honorable paragon, as he had lived what is considered as a good life. In order for him to be reincarnated, he has to endure seven trials over a period of forty-nine days. This is where these three pictured above comes into play. Being such a precious soul, Kim Ja Hong is assigned three Angels of Death who are responsible for escorting and pleading his case during the trials.
Pictured right is Gang Rim, the leader of this trio; smack in the middle is Duk Choon, an Angel of Death who possesses numerous powers; and lastly Hae Won Maek, the man who has the fighting skills of a seasoned ninja. One rule that all Angels of Death must follow is that they must refrain from interfering in human affairs.
However this is easier said than done.

Meet Won II-Byung, a new army recruit who seems to be a bit fragile, both physically and mentally. Just one mistake in the human world, greatly affects the atmosphere of the After-world. Won II-Byung’s inability to handle as well as make amends for his mistake, results in Kim Ja Hong’s trial being in jeopardy.

This leaves Gang Rim with the duty of trying to calm a vengeful spirit, this is important to Kim Ja Hong’s trial, as such spirit turns out to be his brother. Like any trial, there are judges, prosecutors, and admissible evidence. Kim Ja Hong’s brother as a vengeful spirit does not help his reincarnation case at all.
The Angels of Death all have a lot riding on this case as well, as such Gang Rim doesn’t think twice when he decides to enter the human world in a effort to capture Kim Ja Hong’s brother. Everything is not as easy as it seems, and so Gang Rim, along with the others left in the After-world will have a lot of obstacles to face.

Cha Tae Hyun plays the character of Kim Ja Hong, a hardworking firefighter, who later goes through a seven-day trial in an effort to be reincarnated. Cha Tae Hyun is no stranger to the screen, whether as an actor, or a comedian. You can find him in the drama The Best Hit, and the movie Because I Love You.

Ha Jung Woo plays the character of Gang Rim, an Angel of Death who has a soft spot for humans. Ha Jung Woo is an award-winning actor, and as such he has a lot of on-screen experience. You can find him in the movies; 1987: When The Day Comes, and Along With The Gods: The Last 49 Days, which is the second installment of this movie.

KIm Dong Wook plays the character of Soo Hong, Kim Ja Hong’s younger brother, who later becomes a venegeful spirit. Kim Dong Wook has a lot of projects under his belt, so there’s no doubting his talent. You can find him in the upcoming drama, The Guest, as well as the second installment to this movie, Along With The Gods: The Last 49 Days.
This movie was written and directed by Kim Yong Hwa who also worked on Take Off and Mr Go.
At the 2018 (54th) Baek Sang Arts Award, Kim Yong Hwa won an award for Best Director, while Jin Jong Hyun won the Art Award.

Why New 3D Mario Games Suck
Before I go to bed I want to write a quick article about my opinions of Mario games. Ah, Mario games... I will never tire of you. Crisp and clean, to the point and joyfully so. Just jump, mofocka. Games that revel in the concept of moving around, making it inherently fun. Is there more noble of a proposition in gaming? Has there ever been more lucid game design?
Yet, I think that modern Mario games suck.
Like everyone and their grandmother (and if your grandmother plays Mario send her my regards, she's cool as hell, dude) I've been playing Mario 3D All Stars to have me a nice time. However it does reinforce this idea that I've always had, that Mario games, even though they may share the same broad aesthetic values and mechanics, are different from each other by nature. In this article, I propose that this change over time has actually been for the worse, leading to a loss of complexity in platforming game design with each successive iteration which is being traded away in favor of more cinematics and bombastics.
First things first, we have the beautiful Mario 64. A timeless classic and most of us' first foray into 3D games (yes, this was the very first game I ever played where the notion of the third dimension actually mattered. I had already played Star Fox but in Star Fox you don't really move in three dimensions, you're just in a plane going on rails and you cannot move completely freely). I played this before I even touched Doom or other first person games of the sort.
Minor parentheses by the way: did you know that Star Fox was inspired on the Inari Taisha temple? The beautiful, big long mountain shrine in Kyoto full of orange gates?
Fox translates to Inari and its creator, Dylan Cuthberth, who loved Japan a lot, got inspiration from it which he applied to his new bizarre fucking mind bending 3D tech which he then pitched and sold to nintendo and then became the basis for the Ultra 64, which was to come, and thus one of the main pillars of all modern 3D gaming as a whole? Holy shit, right? In Star Fox you cross gates to gain powerups and to make it fun to maneuver around with your Airwing... How come that I had never seen the connection?
But anyway. Back to Mario 64.
It is commonly told that Mario 64 was created by Miyamoto parting from the concept of a "secret garden". Most of the development time initially, it is said, was spent on Miyamoto and Tezuka, Mario creators, fine tuning the movement system in an isolated garden map without any enemies or hazards.
The purpose of the secret garden was threefold: first, the team was used to designing Mario games as 2d platformers and they were uncertain about how to take Mario games into the 3D era (a literal, flat-out equivalent conversion of classic mario, think Super Mario World, powerups and all, was considered at a certain point in development, creating linear, obstacle course stages with a beginning and a goal, the remnants of which still linger in the final game as the bowser stages, an idea which was finally fleshed out with the Mario 3D series on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, 20 years later (!)), so they needed a way to hash out ideas about how to design this new installment.
Second, Miyamoto took as one of the goals of the project to design Mario's movement with a supreme level of fidelity, so he'd use this area to test and test and test all of Mario's acrobatics, to make them feel smooth, convincing and entertaining to play. He'd say that as long as a move didn't feel right in the garden, it couldn't be used in the final game, creating in the end as something that feels a little bit like ninja acrobatics on rollerskates or ice skating.
Third, the team eventually realized that, since 3D content was incredibly expensive to create back in 1995, when commonplace computer 3D animation and design was still quite in its infancy, they needed to develop the skill to design little sandboxes which were good enough to run around in over and over without getting tired of them (think of it as if constructing a highly detailed, complex diorama, an idea fleshed out finally in Captain Toad from Super Mario 3D world, again, 20 years later (!)). This was to create more content for the game while reusing the same architecture and geometry for the levels, since resource usage had to be maximized. The remnants of the garden are still present in the final game, as the Castle Grounds.
So, do you see the level of SOUL invested here? The level of care, the amount of love placed into each and everyone of Mario's moves in Super Mario 64? And the results show it: the game allows the player to tackle all objectives at their own pace, in their own terms, however way they can. The game forces nothing down your throat: blast to the island in the sky? Well, maybe just long jump to it if you're gutsy enough, no need to wait until you unlock cannons. Or get the 8 red coins first if you want. Or just fuck it, and go and release the chain chomp first because he looks very cool and this is probably the first power star that all people who play the game get first. There's never a single way to clear most power stars in the game, instead the decision is left to the player, which the game trusts is smart enough to figure out solutions to problems on their own. Wanna jump for it? Sure, if you can. Want to wait unil you got the powerup? That's cool too. Want to go play another level? Sure thing! OR FUCK IT! JUST RACE THE KOOPA IF YOU WANT!
So you can probably see why I loathe the fact that the sequel was based exclusively on giving people a dumbed down version of the same shit, with a fucking dumb water pack.
Come 2002 and under pressure to perform, the team releases Super Mario Sunshine and it's the most bland, dumbed down sequel ever (though, could anyone really live up to such a predecessor's prowess?). In an attempt to make the game accessible to more players (tm), the game is stripped out of its complexity. Mario no longer moves as a gracious, roller skating gazelle that can navigate the world in the most agile and beautiful way ever. Instead you screech down to a halt the second you stop pushing the direction stick instead of providing people with that most delicious sense of momentum and friction SM64 had. Boo Hoo! Baby think 3D platforming is too hard? BABY CANNOT HANDLE PING PING WAHOO ON THE N64? Then we give babby a water nozzle which will allow them to correct any miscalculated jump ever (it's insulting that this is the best solution they managed to come up with) HOORAY!
But hey! Sunshine has good things about it! Uh... the water is pretty! (that's probably where all the development time and resources probably went anyway).
SAY WHAT? WE GOT TO RELEASE THIS YEAR? AND THEY WANT US TO INCLUDE 120 STARS AGAIN? FUCK! WE RAN OUT OF TIME; JUST ADD BLUE COINS, DUDE! YEAH WHATEVER! SHIP IT! THIS IS THE GAME! I'M GONNA GO LIE DOWN AND HAVE A BEER! FUCK IT!
Mario Sunshine is not a bad game, but it's not a bold, groundbreaking game like its predecessor was. It detests and rejects the fact that you are a competent platforming game player. It nerfs everything down. It makes it almost impossible to lose. It plays things too safe and too easy, replacing action game design with flashing lights, prettier graphics, and an easier experience; it has its moments but it's an inferior game mechanically: jump, double jump, triple jump, hover, rocket jump, turbo run (why), walk on tightropes (why), spin in air (why), spin from ground into high jump, turn and backflip, swim, spray water, spray water and dive, wall jump, ground pound. It's only 16 moves -- less than its predecessor --, and they have less complexity and are easier to execute.
Not only that but you're no longer free to tackle objectives the way you see fit. The world is now a container for several course-clears, and no longer allowing for the freedom of open world games. If you pick Shine 1, you WILL clear shine 1 in that run of the level. If the game wants you to watch a cutscene (of which there were none in SM64), you WILL watch the fucking cutscene. Wash rinse repeat until you get enough shines to clear the lamest end boss in video game history.
Again, it's not a bad game but it reeks of suits getting involved in the process and demanding shit to be made easier because otherwise it wouldn't sell. It reeks of misplaced priorities. It's a pretty game and it's nice for an afternoon, but after that you just have blue coins left and hooooooooooooo weeeeeee I'm not touching that shit. The most asinine side quest I've ever seen in a video game: to find blue coins hidden in random spots, usually by cleaning a spot of graffitti, and exchange 10 of them for a single shine, the collection of which cannot be stacked and forces you to watch a cutscene every time. Reeks of laziness.
Then Mario Galaxy comes out and Jesus Christ. It's like they don't give a shit at this point. Open-world, acrobatics-centric 3D Mario is just fucking gone. This is probably the point where it became cheap enough to make 3D content en-masse that they just started copying the classic Mario formula in 3D to churn out content.
The bad thing, is that at a certain point it feels as if the games play themselves and I've always been against it and will always be against it because I'm into games due to the fact that they're something which engages my brain. I don't like games which just keep me there, passively looking at the screen, reacting to quick time events. I want to be immersed, engrossed and I want to feel that nice sense of exploration and fun experimentation that you only get with open world games.
The games are back to linear now: even though, in Sunshine, they made an effort to at least make things seem open world, they don't care anymore in this one. It's all just linear levels happening in planetoids which you visit in a sequence, to, yet again, remove all hazards and all notion of challenge and complexity, even more than before. And you have to shake the wii remote to spin to top it off, and this gives you a free save if you miscalculate a jump. The galaxy games were extrapolated through the 3D series: Super Mario 3D Land and 3D World (strong candidates for most bizarre title to a video game ever), to form which is called the "course clear" vein of 3D mario games, starting from the Galaxy games.

Don't get me wrong again, there's nothing inherently bad about these types of Mario game, and Galaxy 2 and Mario 3D World are both some of the best video games ever created, but I think that something got lost in transition when compared to the sublime finesse of the movement system in Mario 64. The way it respects your intelligence, the way it drops you in an open world and gives you freedom, the way that its worlds are built, I think that all of this has never been paralleled, not even by nintendo themselves for some reason, and I think the reason why this happened is that, maybe the excellence of Mario 64, quirks and all, was a product of its time and the limitations in production ability for 3d content and graphics that surrounded its creation at the time.
Yet, Lo and Behold! 2017 is here and Super Mario Oddyssey is in the horizon and it promises to be the Next Big Thing (tm) since sliced bread. A TRUE and HONEST return to form, to the Glory Days of Mario 64! And the game is way too enthsiastic with its embracing of Super Mario 64 nostalgia: there's literally a whole level inspired after the Mario 64 castle grounds in Mario Oddysey and the whole notion of absolute freedom from Mario 64 (somewhat) returns (but not completely because you still are subject to doing a main big event per level, after which the rest of the level unlocks; once you clear the game, the second half of the game unlocks even). And the emphasis is back into acrobatics again, which is a good thing: playing with your hat can get you places if you're handy with it.
But my biggest gripe with Super Mario Oddysey is that it's not completely honest as it claims to be. It's a course-clear game hidden under a coat of paint of an open world-game. It's literally Zelda Breath of the Wild's half-assed design all over again: big empty world full of collectibles, with tiny "levels" to be found. Once you find a game, it's time to do a thing --wash rinse repeat. In Mario Oddysey you explore around until you find a pipe or a door or a character and you get plunked into a Super Mario 3D World style course-clear game with additional collectibles. So it's not really the game which it was told to be. The levels don't feel like beautiful dioramas, and the acrobatics, even if nice, are nowhere near as rich as the SM64 acrobatics. There's infinite lives this time around, so there's no real feeling of risk. The game rehashes its own content, you make a tower of goombas, cool. Then you make it again, twice as long. Then you make it again, in the water. Then you make it again, in the beach level. Then you make it again, in the ice level. Then you make it again. Then you make it again, then you make it again...
You could argue that they were onto something with the capture system, because it's an attempt to enhance the movement system while at the same time it's trying to keep things interesting, but the bad thing is that this is really not the case. Captures are contextual, and you're expected to capture an enemy, do something with it, then leave it behind, so it's not a skillset that you build up on, it's yet another course-clear level in a disguise.
So even though it's a good game, it's not the game that it set out to be, I'm sad to say. The Brilliance of Super Mario 64 is yet to be rivaled, and Nintendo should feel ashamed of it. It's been 20 years, man. Where has your mind been all along?
Alright Nintendo, to conclude, here's a freebie for you. This is how you design your next Mario game so it fucking kicks ass: you bring back the SM64 movement system and ADD ONTO IT. Do NOT take away from it, just ADD. Complexity is good in games. All of your fans are fucking 30 year olds, they can handle a complex game.
Next, you develop a vast, broad, massive open world. Think GTA-size. You set up 1200 stars and you place them all over the world in ways where it is EXCITING by itself to explore the world. Make it so people can collect stars at their own pace, ANY WAY THEY WANT, and expand the world accordingly. Keep the Super Mario Oddyssey persistence, where once you capture a moon you don't have to go back to a menu screen, that was a good addition. Embrace the diorama mentality and go nuts with the world. Fill it with waterfalls, caves, chasms, canyons, and provide the player nothing but their acrobatics to clear everything in the world. Avoid pre-scripted sequences (they can still be good for some things like bosses). And make the world seamless, none of this island in the sky thing anymore. Moving around and getting stars should be their own reward, not "getting to find a course clear level".
