thinking again abt this refusal to stop and eat in 26. for one thing it does feel a lot like arthur's not letting go of his obsessive fixation on larson's death so much as he is... redirecting it. it's not murder anymore but he's definitely not Okay either. he's still stuck on this idea of I Need To Do This Now, I Can't Stop Until It's Done. "I can't lose this momentum." he's still under the driving weight from before, it's just pointed in a direction that's more moral and easier to justify to john.

but anyway that was actually a total aside to the point i wanted to make, which was re: the idea of needing to earn the right to a proper meal. bc that got me thinking abt how he frames his consumption of faust, to yellow.

"i didn't pay the price." this is the conclusion, it's the confession he was building up to through the whole story. and it's centered around the fact that john suffered for his survival and he didn't. he didn't pay the price. he hadn't earned it.

...and suddenly that moment in 26, the framing of needing to do something to earn a proper meal (after having killed another man in the exact same manner as faust, no less!) becomes way more specific. and way more chilling.
