Hi!! I wanted to say that I loved reading about your journey of creating a personal website. I'm still unsure between Vercel and Netlify. I have a small question to ask. See, one of the reasons I want to make a website is to archive drawings and journal/sketchbook. Would you have any tips for creating an area on my website just for the diary/journal, which has tags, files for each entry, etc.?

Vercel vs Netlify: I think I settled on Vercel for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I just made a site on Netlify, then tested on Vercel, and now I have like 5 websites on Vercel so I just kept using it LOL. I'm sure a more tech-savvy person would know the difference - I think they have certain integrations with specific programs.

Creating a diary or journal with tags:

There's a couple of different ways you can do that, with different levels of work needed.

This sadgrl tutorial might be outdated and may or may not work, but explains the process better than I can.

Easiest: make a journal on Dreamwidth, or another blogging site (wordpress??) that allows easy tags and RSS feed, and embed that RSS feed onto your site.

This requires almost no HTML set-up, and the easiest to organize tags, but you don't truly have the data on your own site since it's just embedded.

When I snuck into a web design class at college, this was one of the methods that the professor used for a blog within a portfolio site LOL.

Shit like wordpress is what a LOT of ~professional~ sites do for their blog section. They code it separately from the main site haha. It's the most popular thing, but not necessarily the best. And wait til you read on what the CEO of wordpress has been having meltdowns about... he owns tumblr too!

It's made with a tutorial for Neocities if that's what you use.

Medium: Set up zonelets.

It will require some HTML and JS editing, but will help automate making headers/footers for each page of a blog.

I've never used it myself, but I see other people speak highly of it.

HARD FOR ME CUZ I'M A GORILLA: I believe a lot of professional web devs will slap your face with their coding cock until you use a static site generator (SSG) to make your site.

You will need some coding knowledge to set up the tagging system since it doesn't come with it enabled by default. But it's made explicitly to be an alternative to big Static Site Generators which are...

It requires some more intimidating knowledge, because it's a lot of scripts that turn files that are not HTML/CSS/JS into plain HTML.

Also you have to use the command line, and that doesn't come with buttons that tell you what you can do. You have to copy/paste all that shit or memorize the code to 'dev build astro' and it all looks silly.

I've used Eleventy, and now am using Astro. Other people use Hugo or Jekyll or some other stuff with crazy names like Glup Shitto. I hate all these sites cuz none of the words mean anything to me. This is a common theme for me and tech. I don't know what NODES or CONTENT or ISLANDS are!!!

I had the most success attempting to learn how to use a SSG by downloading a template and altering it with github + VScodium. Here's the template page for Astro. You click on a theme you like, and it takes you to its github page. (If you don't want to use evil Microsoft stuff sorry. Skip this entire section.) Follow the instructions on the page for "forking" the glup shitto. When it tells you to run commands, I run those commands through the terminal window in VScodium. These tutorials never tell you what these commands do cuz they assume you already know. Usually those commands automatically install the files you need onto your computer, and create the final files.

You can see my wip here for a "tag system" that SHOULD show members of a web listing haha but I don't know what I'm doing and I have a reading disorder AND don't know cumputer good.

THEORETICALLY this will be the simplest and easiest way to maintain tags and files, because after you set it up you just have to write the "content" of the blog page. And you don't have to set up the header/footer ever again. I see the vision, and potential, but I am not there yet when it takes me 5 hours a day to figure out what any of the words in the documentation mean and I don't want to ask an actual tech person cuz they will be like 'obviously just press the Blip on the Repository and then Suck My Ass in the command line".

(side note I haven't updated fujofans in like a year cuz I'm struggling with this part to make updating easier).

Con: the final HTML/CSS code is really ugly if it's "minified", and a lot of themes use """"""professional"""""" CSS libraries like Bootstrap and Tailwind that I honestly think are ugly cuz that's what every fuckin' tech website uses to style their pages and make them look Professional and Minimalist with stupid code like style="500-w dark-gray-balls D-cup-bra" on every single element. Even Toyhouse uses Bootstrap. Eugh!

But maybe you're smarter than me and can wrangle these things better!

I've used this image in a few places now (Royal Road, Spotify, Discord. Should probs add it to AO3 as SToFLO's main home. See below edit.) for SToFLO, but I haven't really talked about it. So, let's do that!

First, white fire is HARD. (Especially in ATLA's style, which doesn't seem to keep to a brightest/hottest flame near the source pattern, so much as a bright spots where they look good until the flame shape abruptly ends method.) It's ridiculously difficult to keep the flames from looking ghostly (adding some yellows and reds buried under the white so they can just barely be seen helped with that) to say nothing of trying to keep them bright without turning them into a blob of white. I kinda hated myself for making that a plot point while I was working on this. Worse, depending on monitor/phone settings, this image can be either blinding or a dingy gray. I eventually had to accept that I could either scrap them (which I clearly did not do) or make my peace with the situation.

I really like how the reflections on the gold came out on my second attempt. I waffled over doing them the first time because the canon images I found for reference (They were surprisingly hard to find. Everything is either an establishing shot too far out for good detail, or a close up on the face that cuts out the crown.) don't seem to put any special shine on the crown at all. Some feedback encouraged me to at least try it to help tie the foreground and subject into a cohesive image. I'm glad I listened! It looks so much better than the first version for that factor alone.

It's not literal to the fic (barring sudden inspiration -- Agni might enjoy tagging along as a tiny sphere cradled in the crown, just because?) but I effectively slapped Zuko's scar on the crown and amused myself thoroughly doing so. I probably should have gone back and tweaked the background colors again to up the contrast between the two elements. (Maybe if there's a third version I'll remember to alter that.)

The band looked very plain as it was, so I added some embroidery. Flames and waves seemed Fire Nation appropriate, so that's what I ended up adding.

The finished piece is by no means perfect, but overall I'm quite chuffed with how it turned out. I learned a good bit making it, that's for sure.

Edit: I tried adding the image to AO3 in a few different ways, but failed to find any I liked. Doubly so when taking into account the differences in display size/dimensions for desktop/mobile. Formatting across systems is a pain.

Rejected options included: in the summary (couldn't make it look nice with AO3's limited HTML -- no float, table was a clunky workaround at best), in the opening notes (crowded, edging toward bloated), and above the text of the first chapter (same crowding problem, but uglier for being below the horizontal break). Oh well. It was a nice thought.

Edit2: Might go back and try adding it to a later (but still early) chapter, if I can find a place it would make sense to insert it. It should be a complementary addition to the story, not a distraction, ya know?

Edit3: Stuck it at the beginning of chapter six. Not totally happy with the placement, but it's the best I've come up with. We'll see if I stick with it.

Hey so I had doubts about sending you this lol because I don't remember any details and also I'm stoned so it could just be that my brain went "yeah that sounds about right. But I sware I remember Old Tumblr having this as a common issue that I used to know the answer to but I completely forgot all the HTML I taught myself because its been so long. So maybe look for some posts from theme makers like 10(damn I'm old) years ago when people did custom themes? It might have an answer. But I swear it was something you need to fix in your theme html.

but yeah as soon as i applied the custom url, alllllll the other features of tumblr stopped working. like... the follow buttons disappeared. going to my own blog, it behaved like it wasn't my own blog, if that makes sense? (heck i am tired... i hope this makes sense)

clicking the follow button did... fuck all. there was no way to reblog posts. maybe this was just because the dns stuff was still populating? redirecting? whatever it does? and would've worked eventually? but i was like NOPE PUT IT BACK THANKS, and now it won't go back. I have tried everything I can think of, and everything except my main home page seems to be working fine again. But for the life of me i cannot stop that redirect from my main blog url to my custom domain, which is not connected to anything at all, AND I HATE IT.

A reflection, a return.

Well, it's the end of 2024 - and for some God forsaken reason I have found my way back to tumblr. is this a bad thing? no. I am enjoying less & less of my preferred social media so it may be time to make that jump. I can also opt into not telling many people that wouldn't already know, and give myself a "safe" place to vent about anything, really. With all that being said, I can't believe I was editing HTML code for a blog like I was 14 again. But embedding that Hayley Williams music in was a must and if you don't agree you are wrong.

With that being said, time to reflect on the year - and my hopes for what's to come. 2024 was probably the hardest year in my professional career. I am a teacher, and in January the office where I work transferred a bunch of tough cases into my classroom. Upon doing so, my coteacher(s) and I were not provided the resources we would need to succeed - and were eventually chastised for not doing as well as we were prior to the roster changes. With all that being said, we still made it to graduation and sent the kids off to kindergarten. A breath of fresh air, at least I thought. In September of last year, I had expressed my desire to take the next summer off and it was approved. Originally I was just going to take off July & August, but management encouraged me to take the full summer, "You deserve it!". I agreed, reluctantly - as I had did the finances for the next few months with the paychecks for those months in mind. I thought, oh well - I still have my vacation and sick days that I didn't use this year. When I asked to use them, I was informed that I no longer qualified as a full time employee and had lost them. Now, I had expected this to happen for next year - but, I worked full time for three years at this place and didn't use the sick/vacation days I had earned from the year prior. Essentially, I was robbed of 80 hours of pay. I explained that I was feeling slighted, and then expressed that I understood that so many teachers were leaving the center. (Five important teachers left that year - my coteacher included.) Fast forward, I survive the summer and send an email in August to ask about classroom placement for the upcoming school year. I was told, "We thought you had quit", and, "We filled your position." I never at any point said I was quitting, and no one confirmed anything with me. My entire life shattered, as I was heavily relying on getting back to work in the middle of August so I could afford rent. They then offered me a demotion and I told them to kick rocks. Anyway, everything worked out because I landed the same job at nearly the same pay - except I have significantly more benefits. My old job took an L losing me, the parents reach out to me asking if there's space at my new place of employment because they hate everything about the place without me. I've found a place where I'm appreciated as an employee and aren't just used for a number to fund greed of a pompous woman with no sympathy. (okay maybe that was harsh.)

There weren't really any other life updates. Just me dying at work because of decisions made that I wasn't necessarily involved in, and then transferring to a new job unexpectedly. I guess, goals for the new year... go to concerts, kiss boys, kiss girls, don't be afraid to do things I want to do, have fun, maybe get into a relationship idk, listen to tons of music, eat and make delicious food, have a good time, travel. A very wide list, I realize I don't have any specific goals for 2025 and that's okay.

It's my 12 year anniversary on Tumblr 🥳

Ah I remember it like it was yesterday.

At the time websites like blogger and WordPress was having an economical hit. Creators were gravitating to other micro blogging websites like Facebook and Twitter and amongst them was Tumblr!

I was only blogging my "photography" and food photos at the time, didn't take off very much. The only advertising you had was go to other peoples blogs, comment and subtly advertise your blog.

So when the other photo bloggers started gravitating away, I just went with the one that suited my type of micro blogging.

The ecosystem of Tumblr was mostly photography, and heeps of fan blogs like f*ck yeah edit fan blogs for Disney, Merlin, Harry potter, and supernatural.

I had a computer at the time so I was in love with the editing side like HTML and I love you can reblog things in between your regular blog post. I wasn't into art yet.

This wasn't my first Tumblr blog. I wanna say it's my 3rd version of this blog, but I think it's probably the 5th version. I was always changing the layout of it.

I don't remember when I started drawing tbh. I think it was during the lana del rey era. She just made her second single or album and ema watson just started acting outside of harry potter, and game of Thrones was just starting. I think I was bored one day waiting for a call back for a job interview and took my moms iPad and tried digital art. It was hideous ngl. But I wish I kept the photos would be nice to look back on them. Eventually I started liking drawing again. I drew mostly fan art of my favorite shows at the time, Merlin, reign, supernatural, game of Thrones. Plus there were a few Tumblr artist I was so obsessed at the time, so it ignited my interest in art after so many years!

I was posting most of my art on a side blog. The main blog was a spam account 😅 but eventually I moved everything back to this main blog so it wouldn't be hard to interact with other creators of this site. I can't seem to link the blog here from my phone.

By 2021 my computer got destroyed and I haven't been able to edit this blog. And the phone version sucks! I haven't posted a lot of my art here because I just hated posting on the app.

I'm still trying to post more here and twitter and threads.

Exam days

I woke up at 5 am today.I didnt sleep again (actually i used to).I studied and went to college at 8 am.Classes starts at 9 am.The exam was easy but there was a tricky question that i thought i did correctly but NO ,after talking with my friends i realized that i wont get any marks on that question.Yep, I'm somewhat disheartened.But its okay right?!! i preapared well and i could do better in second internals.

There was a transfer student in my class.I dont know how she is gonna cope with the new college thingy yk.Just imagine,two years into a college and you are transferred to new one just to spend another damn whole year with new people,professors. cant even think about it,my introvert self is screaming at me.Hopefully she would get with the new change i guess.

i cant anything other than preparing for exams .You know what i hate talking about exams.I wanna talk about javascript,html,css,python and how i am improving myself on those coding languages (yeah html and css arent programming lang).Four exams to go :/

I am thinking of starting a podcast.I like to speak infront of people and i kinda started a podacst and released a episode but i couldnt continue it (procastinated terribly) and omg the editing takes hours and thats leading to the deletion of the account.Now i want to do podacst again because there was a girl in my class was asking me "NEXT EPISODE WHEN?" I've been away from Tumblr for a long, long time....

Seeing the long text post where a user explaining how to install and customize Tumblr themes shocked me. Over the years I was on this website, I did tell myself that I would learn some HTML and CSS to code my own blog themes and pages. Well, that never happened.

I was never the best with coding, but I knew how to install and customize themes when I needed to. I always hated the themes that had more than 10+ color customizations because that meant I had to pull up color palettes and what not. OMG! For my current theme, I even used a color picker and had it matched with complementary colors.

Do users these days really don't spend time on their computers (desktops/laptops) scrolling through places like @theme-hunter or searching through your favorite theme makers' tags finding the "right" theme?

Do users also not spend like an hour or two searching through Google Images for the nice headers, icons, or backgrounds images for their blog? Not to mention, if you saved screenshots or official images, you spent another hour or two picking out Photoshop Photo Filters, or editing on Photoscape, etc. cropping, editing, and resizing images.

Is it just me? Then again, I always periodically changed my blog themes for the ones I'm active on. Even my inactive blogs, all have their own theme. Gosh... we have truly entered in the Smartphone only era years ago.

I just run into a entirely adrien salt blog that said they just work with canon facts........ why? Why do people need to lose the time of their lives to do such a thing. And canon facts, I highly doubt they are even canon and if they are is probably out of context.

I also run into some alya ones, ugh and the worst is that they act like they are the mostly intelligent people in the fandom.

Do they don't have a another show were they love to participate and love the protagonists? I hate the argument of "I just stay here because of the concept of the show" when they make hundreds and hundreds of blogs just to hate on the concept! Why? I just grow worried more and more about these people "I love salting on things" and I hope this doesn't make you ill like it did to me.

That's what I feel.... worried about these people.

I have my implications with the show, I have implications with the creators but I never would put myself into the salt fandom again, I feel like I'm worried too much about this but is because I already was there and it was cool just in the surface but it kills you from the inside..... I need some cool headcanons about djwifi do you have some? It would make my day.

Alya isn't very good at handling the twins. They're loud and rowdy. Chris, on the other hand, is so desperate to grow up that he's perfectly happy to sit there and watch her edit the newest video for the Ladyblog or play with HTML coding on her blog. Nino, on the other hand, has a possibly problematic but currently helpful complex where he just wants to (playfully and safely) WRECK some children in a wrestling match. When they babysit together, they do it at Alya's, spend the first 15 minutes setting up a nest of blankets and pillows in the living room for Nino to use, and then Alya goes to her room with Chris and they divide and conquer.

Nino doesn't know how to snap. Alya once spent an entire afternoon trying to teach him how and it Did Not Work.

Alya speaks fluent English and writes fanfic in English just because Nino's English is iffy at best and he knows her AO3 but she does not want him reading her fic.

Nino, on the other hand, speaks Arabic -- also not fluently, but that's beside the point, because she doesn't speak it at all -- and will pretend to make fun of her when he's really just saying how much he loves her (and sometimes vice versa).

They have two types of dates: Go-with-the-flow dates and as-planned dates. People frequently think that Alya is the one who wanted to keep things as planned, but no, she was the one who was rushing off in the middle of their dates often enough that Nino started feeling insecure about it. When they have a go-with-the-flow date, they can take it wherever they're taken (often to akuma attacks), but as-planned nights don't get interrupted no matter what.

(Bonus: Marinette tries -- sometimes fails, but always tries -- to keep track of when they're having an as-planned date so that she won't give either of them their Miraculous unless it's really important.)

Nino loves grapes. He and Trixx go head to head over the Césaire grapes often. Alya stays out of it; she can't pick one of them.

They both have really high spice tolerances -- of course they do, Nino is African and Alya is Martiniquan. Alya runs a food blog which is just them going to restaurants with insanely spicy food and talking about how good it is. Mostly they do this because it baffles Marinette and especially Adrien.

Nino keeps video journals of especially good days because he's a sap and he's gonna edit them into a video for her someday <333

1. PLANNING

It’s Zayn’s birthday, I ought to make something because so far I have made birthday posts for Louis, Niall and Liam. I didn’t participate in his birthday challenge so I had more time to create something for his birthday. I saw this post by @spaceniall​ and instantly fell in love with it. It's so clean, so neat,  an amazing edit. I had that post tagged for inspo and because my Louis’s birthday edit was a bit “grand”, I thought I should make something simple. 

I went to look for some photos of Zayn everywhere. Literally e v e r y w h e r e. I saved every photo I found beautiful and there were a LOT. I asked my friends for adjectives that describe Louis best and added them on my Louis’s birthday post, and I followed that approach for this edit. I asked several friends what they think of Zayn and collected the adjectives. 

This was a time where I haven’t used trello board, so I put all the adjectives in a google doc. Seriously I swear by trello board, they make my life easier.

After I had all the photos and the adjectives, I went to pinterest to look for the color palette. I forgot how and why I came up with this color scheme, but I believed I wanted something pastel and muted color. 

I had this idea to make an evergreen birthday post. I didn’t want to state any “happy birthday zayn” or his age on the graphic. I didn’t want to make all the edits to have his face because I wanted to showcase my graphics and typography style lmao. So I came up with 2 pictures with Zayn’s face and one central picture with his name. And I’m obsessed with space stuffs so this birthday edit is space themed.

2. PROCESSING

This is one of my earliest edits that I made in Illustrator, though I used Photoshop as well.

2.1 REMOVING PICTURES BACKGROUND

Remember I saved a LOT of Zayn’s photos? Yeah? Well I had a hard time choosing the right one. I asked Sabrina to help lmao. After I agreed with myself which photos I would use, I opened Photoshop and prayed it won’t crash after 5 min.

I uploaded the 2 photos and then I used selection on Zayn and then clicked inverse and deleted the background. Recently I found this website who can delete your background in 1 min, tbh that’s a life saver. I recommend using them, if you hate removing backgrounds with Photoshop. 

I saved the backgroundless Zayn’s photos as png. And we’re moving on to the next step

2.2 THE TYPOGRAPHY

I only used Photoshop to remove the backgrounds. Now onto Illustrator. Always pray it won’t close by itself every 5 min.

I don’t really remember which dimension I used, but I suspect it’s 600x700 px. I made 3 artboards and loaded the color palette I found from Pinterest. I made 3 rectangles as the backgrounds for each picture and filled them with my desired colors, 2 pink and 1 green. Green being the standalone was put in the middle.

A bit of excursion based on my experience

When you open an artboard in Illustrator, you’ll see a white background. When you save the file you’ve worked on, it’ll actually be transparent. That’s why I always draw a rectangle as a background so it has a solid color. 

I focused on ZAYN (middle pic) first because I wanted that to be the main focus. I don’t remember the font I used and I already deleted all files. I followed this tutorial to make the text. Basically you write your text first and choose effect > 3d > extrude and bevel > isometric top. Changed the colors according to my color palette. 

I moved on to the first picture, Zayn and the adjectives. I uploaded his photo to the artboard and put it in the middle. I wanted the adjectives to encircle him. I just followed this tutorial on how to make the effect. I made that text effect because that reminded me of the saturn ring lmao. 

2.3 THE GRAPHIC DETAILS

Once I got the typography done, I made stars and moon to make the edits merrier and more space themed. 

For the stars you can follow this tutorials. For the moon I made 2 circles, one of them was bigger. I put the smaller one in front and click minus front (I think). For the saturn planet, I made a circle with filling and an oval with stroke only, putting the oval infront of the circle and delete the back part of the ring (I hope this makes sense). 

I have these lines around Zayn, my intention was to make Zayn pop and kind of crown him or give him a glowy effect sort-of. 

All I did was follow this tutorial and delete the lines at the top, because I didn’t want it to be too crowded. Then I put some stars and planets at the top to balance it.

2.4 FINISHING TOUCHES & EXPORTING

I rearranged some things, zoomed out the artboard so I could see everything as one post and picked and deleted some unwanted things. After I was satisfied, I added my watermark and it was my old url, I just typed louistomlinboo. (Now I made a logo-ish and use that as my watermark and the logo is not dependent on my url)

Ok I lied I used Photoshop again… so I had these adjectives in 2.1 that encircled him right but some parts of the texts are above him. I exported my Illustrator file as a psd, uploaded it on Photoshop and used layer mask magic to delete the texts that were above him to create an illusion that the texts went around and under him you know. See the picture below, some texts are beneath him.

For this picture I exported the png file from Photoshop, the rest directly from Illustrator.

This was when I learned I needed to scale up, because on Illustrator they all look good in terms of quality. But when I posted it, the quality was reduced. That time I just exported as big as the dimensions and I was disappointed with the quality when it’s on tumblr.

3. POSTING

I uploaded the 3 pictures I have on tumblr and chose “happy birthday zayn” with star symbols/emojis to keep up with the space theme.

So I always write out what my caption will be with the “rich text” option.

 Then I go to this color html website to add the gradient color in the caption and remove the “;” with “ “ in here. Once I have everything, I change rich text to html so I can put the text with color in html mode. 

Put some tags related to Zayn. (self promotion time lol. i have compiled tags for 1d creators check them out here)

I finished I think a week earlier before Zayn's birthday so I saved it on draft. I posted around midnight (my timezone is CET), because oh boy it is a competition with birthday post lmao. That’s what I feel like at least. You know, everyone wants to make a birthday post, I feel I have a better chance If I post something first. Whenever I have something done earlier before a certain due date, I either save it on draft or schedule it so it’ll be posted automatically.

Yeah that’s it! It’s not as detailed as before I think because the files are deleted sorry!

I may be alone in this but I really miss how we used to be obsessed with our page theme designs?

Like yes, Im just cranky because I spent a lot of time playing with/learning coding and got my art blog lookin nice n spicy right before people stopped caring about themes. But also, this is the only social media website where you still have freedom over how your page looks and I hate how staff just made the whole thing completely Dashboard/Mobile focused.

Every other site completely did away with individuality years ago and now everything is either Chrome or Dark Mode. For example, YouTube used to have customizable layout themes before Google bought them. You could have fun color schemes and backgrounds that fit with your channel and video style. Sometimes it looked cute and aesthetically pleasing:

Or you could just leave it as the default. But you had the choice and that added a layer of discovery to web-surfing. (Forgive the examples, but google is trying VERY HARD to pretend that customizable Youtube was never a thing and I’ve been having such a hard time finding images of it.)

Now with TUMBLR, you can still edit your HTML to look like ANYTHING and a lot of people got really good at coding as a result. If you found out that someone you followed had a dope theme, it was exciting just because it was fun and cool to look at. Now that most websites are mobile-focused, they’ve all lost their panache and nobody has the incentive to make individual blogs anymore. And I understand why, but I’m a mad nostalgic baby about it.

Can you imagine if websites started allowing this kind of artistry again? Sure, not everybody uses desktops anymore but it would be nice if your personal social media pages could have, y’know, personality? Your youtube page could have unique layouts, play buttons, video boarders, playlist cover designs (I mean beyond custom thumbnails). Facebook could give you customizability for the design/font of your posts or different ways to showcase photo albums. Hell, maybe even do some fun things with mobile themes, idk. 

It’s just wild to me that websites like Tumblr and DeviantART are the most shat-on websites on the internet and yet they’re the only ones that aren’t forced to be Google Clones. Idk if it’s capitalism or what, but I’m so bored of modern websites. Bring this shit back!

You keep showering us with long, uber detailed fics like its nothing but how do you even write five words without breaking down? I could spend hours on my word document without accomplishing anything and thats the best case scenario. Seriously,,, HOW? How do you write?

Hello there! Sorry if it took me a while to answer this ask ;-; I tried to make this as detailed as I can, but honestly my brain is just mush the past few days and I’ve ran out of English words to explain things. So sorry if this all sounds rudimentary and uninspired (quite frankly, my writing process is exactly that).

also, not @ me procrastinating writing my thesis and instead making a post about my fic writing process otl

I’ll be using my latest hq!! fic as an example for each step! If you’re planning to read it, there’s nothing spoiler-y in the screenshots.

1. Outline - I make one just so I have a general idea of how the story will go. First, I need to think of a major problem that I have to fix as the story progresses, then I’ll look for a setting that will work well with showcasing/highlighting the conflict and its resolution. 

The specifics/bullet points change so frequently that the OG outline I made is v v different from how the actual story went. But I really need an outline before I do things so there’s something I can refer to if I get lost.

2. Research - I… can’t write without doing research ;-; I usually write about stuff I have little to no knowledge about, so this part is really important in my writing process. I learn so much from watching documentaries and scouring the internet for related articles so this is the most fun part for me! On my listography, I listed down the sites I frequently use for research. You can go check them out if you like!

3. Music - I make playlists for most of the long fics I write. I sometimes find listening to certain songs help me get in The Mood To Write.

4. More planning - I like to make schedules and checklists for academic work, so naturally it spilled over to writing long fics. I use Trello to create boards for a specific fic, which includes checklists that help me track my progress with writing and editing for each ~☆story arc ☆~.

5. Actual Writing - God, I really hate this part *sobs* Because of school, I wake up really early to write (like 4 or 5 am; 6 am if school starts later and I have time to prepare). I usually write for an hour, but the number of words I eke out varies. Sometimes I can finish one scene, other times I write nothing at all. 

I write in Evernote because its interface looks clean, and it enables me to write and edit fics on my phone. 60% of daemons!AU and 70% of penpals!AU I wrote using Evernote Mobile. I wish I was kidding. I also write my fics with html because it makes uploading on AO3 easier for me (and also because I don’t love myself).

6. Editing - I edit two to three times before sending the fic to my betas just so I won’t permanently incapacitate them with my purple prose and dubious comma placements. As supplements, I use Grammarly (I know a lot of writers hate this app, but I’m broke and terrible at basic grammar so I need it) and Hemingway.

7.  Beta Reading - I love my betas. I don’t deserve them. It goes without saying that I make a shit ton of mistakes while writing since I’m not a native speaker, I work on my phone a lot, and I write with my eyes half open and I’m jacked up on caffeine. My betas correct all my iffy preposition choices, they tell me why this scene is atrocious or this word is inappropriate, and they ask really helpful questions that give me ideas on how to navigate a certain plot point. I’m so thankful for all the work they do.

8. More Editing - Once I get the manuscript back, I’ll edit it three more times. I’ll upload a draft on AO3, download a pdf version and annotate it using my tablet. Then I’ll correct all the shitty parts I found in Evernote.

9.  Posting - It’s done. Finally. I’ll upload the final version on AO3 and do an obligatory promo post on twitter and tumblr. Then I sleep for hours and avoid the internet until it’s safe for me to show my face again.

So... that’s how I usually go about writing long fics. I guess the tl;dr is... writing long fics takes time? And it involves a lot of energy and people. It’s a fuckton of work. But, as an elaborate form of escapism, I really like sharing stories about people that live vastly different lives from mine, and whenever I feel insecure and bogged down I keep going back to that “why”. Writing stresses me out and gives me a lot of pain and heartache, but for the most part I find creating stuff fun. I also remind myself that it’s not my day job, so even if I make egregious mistakes, it’s not going to be the end of me or my career.
