I think a lot of the time the Spider-Man fandom tends to throw around calling things erasure but Iâm not insane for thinking that the fact exactly one (1) adaptation has ever acknowledged that Harry Osborn has schizophrenia kind of is right
I mean it doesnât surprise me. Both Spider-Man media and the fandom has a bit of a problem with ableism and essentially treating ableism as a lesser form of discrimination. But it doesnât change the fact that itâs frustrating to watch both adaptations and the fandom often bend over backwards to avoid talking about it.
#I donât necessarily agree with some of my older posts on this topic#or at least how I put it#spider-man stuff in general tends to have issues with ableism#I get on tasms case a lot and it deserves it#I maintain those movies have a eugenics problem#but itâs also like.#insomniac writing terminally ill Harry#but then essentially not giving him a real terminal illness. they used the name of a real one but they arenât writing that illness#never actually even doing much of anything to elaborate on what specifically his terminal illness is meant to#effect in his body. never really specify how it would effect his routines or everyday life. probably especially because the latter could end#up being inconvenient to write around. his cane isnât even an actual mobility cane they couldnât even do the bare minimum levels of research#they should be doing if they want to write that. people on here have gone in depth on how it could not actually be used for that.#Iâll admit I could be forgetting things but I donât think they even specify how venom is supposed to be helping. I assume based on the Peter#thing that maybe it can do advanced healing to somehow help with cell degeneration? but I donât think it was said. I was assuming.#Harry being terminally ill in both tasm and insom is essentially a plot device that they can throw whatever they want on to.#and again! the only thing that you can infer something from is the cane! which would not function as a mobility aid! because their research#was apparently that bad! and Iâm all for disability headcanons but it doesnât feel great that the fandom tends to cling to the low effort#insom template of terminal illness and completely disregards the other form of Harry disability. which heâs had for 52 real life years and#is ignored in both fandom and almost all adaptations. itâs incredibly frustrating. itâs hard to not feel like it must be related to stigma#I would be a bit more forgiving towards people potentially finding the idea daunting to write. certainly not official creators. but is#terminal illness somehow in any way easier?#harryposting#harry osborn#ableism#insomniac spiderman#marvels spider man 2#tasm#the amazing spider man#raimiverse#raimi trilogy

Grief is as human an emotion as joy or melancholy. To live is to grieve and be grieved. If other emotions are ponds, grief is the Mariana trench. More âcommonâ everyday emotions (happiness, sadness, excitement) can be expressed in a myriad of slightly differing ways. With one word, we can distinguish not only an emotion but specify how that emotion is felt. The umbrella of âhappyâ covers everything from pure joy to cheerfulness to contentment. âSadnessâ can come in forms of melancholy or sorrow. Grief, on the other hand, is such an all-encompassing experience that it canât be boiled down into a single simple word. While that may work to describe other feelings, no one word will ever be able to come close to describing grief. No matter what, any word used will fall short of capturing the profound feelings of loss humans can experience. Grief is immeasurable and indescribable which is why it is such a powerfully poetic experience.
Just like there is no one way to experience grief, there is no one way to write a poem. Poetry has no limits or qualifications. Ten-page ballads can be just as poetic as single word expressions. As long as it has a root in something innately human, almost anything can be described as a poem. The humanity of it is what sets poetry apart from prose, which is why such a deeply human experience like grief is poetic.
Perhaps one of the best examples of the duality of grief is Yusef Komunyakaaâs âThe Towersâ. Though the poem is explicitly addressed to his deceased son in the first line, most Americans who read it can relate to the hopelessness conveyed in the poem. Komunyakaaâs focus is on the death of his son which was a deeply personal occurrence. No person on this planet felt his sonâs death the same way he did. However, he framed his sonâs death with an event so widely felt that itâs still remembered every year almost two decades later. 9/11 is so ingrained into American culture that even people who were months old when the tragedy occurred still feel the residual grief from the massive amount of deaths incurred. We can see that Komunyakaa made a deliberate choice to frame the poem this way since his son didnât die during 9/11. If he was confined to using prose to describe his sonâs death, Komunyakaa wouldnât have been able to tap into the grief of an entire nation to compare to the grief he felt like the father of a dead child. By moving away from the literal emotional pain of losing his child and using the more abstract pain felt from a national tragedy he made his pain clearer to a wider audience. Not everyone has experienced the loss of a child, but we all feel the effects of 9/11.
Using poetry to convey his grief was a perfect choice for the audience to truly understand what he was going through. It was also a good choice for Komunyakaa himself. By tapping into his emotions and putting them into words, he must have relieved some of his grief and come closer to closure. By the end of the poem, it seems as if Komunyakaa is finally letting go of his son when he writes âNo, Iâm not Daedalus, but Iâve walked miles in a circle, questioning your wings of beeswax & crepe singed beyond belief.â He acknowledges that he is still mourning, comparing it to walking miles but ending up in the same place again and again because he is stuck in the cycle of grief. His use of past tense (âIâveâ) shows that heâs since stepped out of the circle, perhaps because heâs finally found the answer to his sonâs singed wings of beeswax and crepe. Like Daedalus, Komunyakaa, too, had to work through his grief to keep flying. He lost his son so early that he used the poem to breathe life into him one last time. For Komunyakaa to get closure, heâd at least need to see his son thrive in some way before the child was finally laid to rest in his fatherâs mind. He gave his son âwings⌠agile & unabashedly decorous,â literally letting his son soar and thrive in poetry the way he wasnât able to do in life before his wings turn to âbeeswax & crepe singed beyond beliefâ and his life ends.
Poetry is so profound that even just a couple of lines detailing a simple step by step routine can be turned into a deep look into severed relationships. Robert Haydenâs âThose Winter Sundaysâ is really about just that: his speakerâs routine on Sunday mornings during the winter. It could be read as prose, but that would be doing an injustice to the work. Yes, the basis of the poem is the literal things he and his family would do, but the spacing of the lines combines with the tone of his poem to create the scene of an emotionally strained family. In a way, Haydenâs speaker uses the poem to mourn his relationship with his father. Though he is not literally dead, his son still grieves his fatherâs life, one that has been spent on labor so grueling that his âcracked hands⌠achedâ. We know that the speaker is talking about the past, and he acknowledges that he did not have a close relationship with his father. Instead, heâd speak âindifferently to him,/ who had driven out the cold/ and polished [his] good shoes as well.â Though at the time the speaker did not mourn his father and their relationship (which we can ascertain from his indifference towards his father), we can see that he feels that he should have been mourning the relationship at the time, maybe just so he could appreciate it while he had it. Obviously, he did not understand the father who would wake so much earlier than his son simply to warm the room and polish shoes. At that time in the past, the speaker couldnât comprehend that that was the way his father showed his love. Later in his life, he finally understands, but perhaps too late. He ends his poem by sayingâWhat did I know, what did I know/ of loveâs austere and lonely offices?â implying that he never was able to understand his fatherâs displays of affection in time to return the feelings. Though we donât know that his father is dead, we can glean that he is no longer in contact with him. With the short, blunt sentences Hayden uses, he casts a bitter tone over his wasted relationship with his father. The way he ends the first stanza sets the tone for the entire poem: âNo one ever thanked himâ, âhimâ being the speakerâs father. All of these factors come together to show a man grieving not only his separation from his father but the life his father lived with a son who spoke with him coldly and didnât consider the sacrifices that he made for him. The son mourns the relationship that could have been if only he had seen how much his father cared for him earlier. This poem is a perfect example of how poetry can be used to work through several kinds of grief, including grieving what could have been: a healthy relationship with oneâs son, a life spent on the kind of love that inspires community rather than isolation, or maybe even simply a life that consists of more than hard labor and waking up early on your days off for an unappreciative son.
Poetry can even be used to grieve oneâs own self. The previous two poems mentioned both showed the grieving of those who have passed away and the more abstract relationships that could have come to be. Mark Strandâs âKeeping Things Wholeâ is much more poetry-like than âThe Towersâ and âThose Winter Sundaysâ. The first two detailed things that actually happened and arranged them into a way where they were more poetry than prose. If a few of their words were moved around and rephrased, their poems could possibly lose the strangeness that makes them poetry and become simple prose that doesnât come close to conveying the emotions they convey in their poetic forms. âKeeping Things Wholeâ is pure poetry. If there was a physical scale of the literary versus the literal, his poem would drop the literary side faster than a brick. Every poem has some sort of âstrangenessâ, and when it comes to this one, that âstrangenessâ is basically the entire poem.
âIn a field
I am the absence
of fieldâ
canât be twisted into something that actually happens. The fact that it is untouched by the literal makes the poem so purely melancholy that it inspires weeping in some readers (including, as you know, the author of this paper). When I try to think of the thoughts that would inspire poetry like this, I picture someone who feels grief so deep that no real-world comparison will do. Though itâs never explicitly stated, Strand perfectly conveys the emotions of someone grieving themself. Technically none of it makes sense, but the second one starts thinking poetically, the lines scream that the poet feels like he is someone who is fundamentally missing. He grieves himself, and the fact that he cannot seem to find himself, and âThis is/ always the caseâ. The final stanza is especially raw and wrought with emotion:
We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.
Not only does he convey the grief that he feels, but he also makes the reader grieve him. The image of someone who feels so empty that they see themselves as what is missing is so profoundly sad that I canât come up with words that do it justice. The readerâs mourn along with Strand for the selfless person who never lets themselves stay in one place too long and find himself for fear of being âwhat is missingâ. Someone who keeps moving to allow the air âto fill the spaces/ where [his] bodyâs beenâ is so self-sacrificing that they would rather never find themself to keep the world whole for others rather than cure his sense of self-loss. The way that he mourns himself paints the picture of someone who could be so valuable to society if only he would allow himself the chance to find a community. Itâs hard to stop oneâs self from grieving along with Strand for someone who so obviously cares about others but canât find enough of themselves to know, let alone care for.
Poetry is perhaps the best way to put grief into words. For Yusef Kamanyakaa, he was able to change his sonâs death from a âsadâ event to something that inspired the image of âthrobbing searchlightsâ, conveying a hopeless tone that the literal words with the same tone (like âhopelessâ) would never be able to convey the same level of loss he was experiencing. He was able to not only work through the literal grief for his son but also to put it into words. Hayden grieved his relationship with his father and Strand his relationship with himself, both leaning into the poetic to fully convey the depth of their grief. No amount of technical language would ever be able to come close to even a single line of poetry describing profound emotions, especially grief. To mourn is to tap into humanity, and to write poetry is to let that tap run.

2019 in Books
2019 was another fairly slow reading year. No excuses really. I just didn't manage to get into a proper rhythm and the desire for doing other things trumped that of reading.
1. Mythos: The Greek Myths Retold (3/5)
By Stephen Fry
My Take: Myths are just soâŚ. wierd! I enjoyed the retelling of some of these timeless stories which just, for the most part, make no sense. Itâs interesting how Gods have come to represent âbeyond humanâ and perfection, but the Greeks myths infuse Gods with both virtue and vice â vengeance, passion, cruelty, avarice. Gods are more extreme version of humans. I find it interesting how some of these stories have survived and continue to inspire creatives all over.
2. A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes (4/5)
By Stephen Hawking
My Take: Much needed refresher of descriptions and explanations of foundational physics, much of which I had forgotten. I enjoyed the historical elements of the basic premise that every theory is provisional, just a hypothesis no matter how much facts seem to agree with it. I love that our foundational understanding of the universe and itâs physical laws come from two theories that are largely at odds with each other: general relativity and quantum mechanics. The discussions around space, time, the expanding universe, elementary particles, and black holes are enjoyable-though I must say Iâm already in need of another refresher.
3. Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World (1/5)
By Cal Newport
My Take: I was really hoping to like this book. The truth is that I struggle to focus on just one thing at a time and my mind tends to wander on to the next thing. But, I didn't really learn much of anything new and a lot of the book felt like fillers and obvious advice â focus on what's important, avoid social media, do the hard tasks early in the morning, email and the internet are attention hogs, add routines and habits that force you into the behaviours you want, etcâŚ
4. Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration (4/5)
By Ed Catmull
My Take: As you would expect from experts in story telling, the book weaved in the narrative of Pixar with business lessons. Creativity flurishes in enviroments with flat structures, candor, truth-seeking, trust, prototyping, iteration, mentorship. Specifically, found the braintrust (a group of trusted colleagues with their own circle of competence who will be honest with each other in pursuit of better outcomes) to be an interesting management tool to instantiate some of these concepts. Another interesting concept was thinking about how you can reduce the consequence of failure by keeping a project in a development phase for longer, where the costs of exploration and iteration is low. Once you commit to a path, it's much harder to change direction.
5. Why We Sleep (2/5)
By Matthew Walker
My Take: I've always been fond of sleep â but for some reason it's not one of those things that I prioritise over say a good night out with family/friends, Netflix (apparently Netflix's biggest competitor is sleep according to Reid Hasting), or a large dosage of link-hopping on the interwebs. I've always felt that sleep is largely a waste of time, and that if I can reduce the amount of time sleeping I'll gain more time in deliberate consciousness. This book is a good reminder of our body's physical limitations and how critical of a process sleep is for learning, memory, decision-making, creativity, happines, working, longevity (get the point here?). While the benefits are clear (if somewhat hyperbolic), trying to implement the advice is where the rubber hits the road. I'm working on scheduling sleep consistency, no screens in bed, no caffiene in the afternoon, ideal sleep setup. Unfortunately, I have a feeling a newborn baby won't help for this resolution in 2020.
6. Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (4/5)
By Anthony Bourdain
My Take: I've been following Anthony Bourdain since his break away shows No Reservations from 2005ish onwards, but never managed to read the book that started his popular ascent. His untimely death in 2018 for some reason really spoke to me though I hadn't seen any of his shows for some time. Kitchen Confidential really brought it all back for me with his irreverant, 'bad-boy' take on food, travel, kitchens, and culture. It's a wonderful read both for it's narrative and kitchen tips. Owning and working in a restaurant is one of those things that sounds idyllic in theory, but the realities are grueling and Bourdain really brings that to life.
7. The Design of Everyday Things (4/5)
By Donald A. Norman
My Takeaways: Good design is harder to notice than bad design because good design makes itself invisbile. Defining what to design (i.e. finding the right problem) is one of the most difficult parts of the process, so avoid specifying the problem for as long as possible. There is no such thing as an average person â so don't design for one. One of the main contributing factors to bad design is the incremental addition of complexity of devices, due to continuously added features. User-centered design involves simplifying the structure of tasks, making things visible, getting the mapping right, exploiting the powers of constraint, providing feedback, designing for error, and explaining affordances using signifiers.
8. How Not To Die: Discover the foods scientifically proven to prevent and reverse disease (3/5)
By Michael Greger
My Takeaways: I picked up this book in an effort to learn more about nutrition, partially because I wanted to lose weight and partially because I wanted to see whether eating healthier would lead to feeling more energized and to better outcomes. I'm not sure eating better helped, but definitely won't hurt. The main premise is to just eat more plants along with the same nutritional advice you'd expect: minimize processed foods, sugar, alochol, eat more raw veggies, tumeric, flaxseeds, nuts, fruits, wholegrains. A dispointing part of the book is that it felt Greger cherry-picked research as most nutrition gurus do. In any case, for the past year the book has inspired me to be more plant-based and it's something I expect to continue without being extreme about it â there's just no downside really
9. Andrew Carnegie (3/5)
By Joseph Frazier Wall
My Takeaways: This was my big biography for 2019. And by big I mean 1200 pages big. I didn't dedicate much time to the backend of Carnegie's life which had more to do with his perspectives on philanthropy and giving away his wealth â not a problem I have today. A true rags to riches story (I mean from nothing to literally the richest man in the world), the book does a good job of setting the historical context and providing a good narative of Carnegie's life, beliefs, and businesses. True wealth derives from owning things that appreciate in value exponentially, not from a high salary. Carnegie was lucky to be in the right place (Pennsylvania) in a booming industry (railroads) at the right time (American industrialisation) with access to the right people as mentors and supporters (J Edgar Thomson). These relationships and connections proved essential for Carnegie to build his steel empire and wealth. His relationships with his businesses managers (Frick, Schwab), attention to detail, ruthless pursuit for cost-cutting and innovation, and approach to competitive threats stood out to me.
10. The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read (and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Did) (4/5)
By Philippa Perry
My Takeaways: I was graced with the news that we were expecting a baby boy earlier in the year and my wife gifted me this wonderful little book on how to approach child rearing. One's default's behaviour towards one's children are often determined by what your parents did, but that's often not the best approach. What stood out to me is the obvious really â that one should treat one's child like an independent person and strive to build a geniune, loving relationship with him/her. Don't manipulate, distract, lie, train⌠but teach, explain, support, listen, comfort, understand, be truthful. All behaviour is communication.
11. Principles: Life and Work (4/5)
By Ray Dalio
My Takeaways: Part platitudes and banal advice, part unconfounding clarity and an approach to life and work that is hard to argue with. Regardless of what one's philosophy is to life, Dalio's argument is it's important to have one and know what it is. That it's important to be thoughtful about how we spend our time on this earth. Think for oneself. Embrace reality, especially when it's painful. Be radically open-minded, but assertive and confident at the same time. Learn how to make effective decisions. Despite the self-helpy nature of the book, I enjoyed it.

Reasons to Nutrients in the time of Infancy and Kid-hood in Educative Essay
Reasons to Nutrients in the time of Infancy and Kid-hood in Educative Essay
Guide:
Its popular training that well being outstanding of todayâs gentleman is how much the health specialist instructed for getting better his company, all as a result of form of personal life, routines and routines appreciated . But nevertheless, it is always nearly next to impossible to bestessaysforsale.net improve these whole life types of conditions. Amongst the only couple of issues which can be done, is to have an especially meet mind and body, which is typically subject to our eating plan and it is vitamins and minerals. And of course, would you not like to have a healthful frame?
Need for eating routine for infancy and child-hood:
An infant is usually a standard son or daughter which are not able to go. The whole time, within the entry into the world for a newly born baby, up until the time it sets out exercising is named the period of infancy. The span if this learns just to walk is known as toddler-hood. Infancy also happens to be the amount of the initial immediate development, with respect to simultaneously physical and psychological elements. Exercise and diet behaviours used throughout these prime developmental numerous years specified the step for life-rather long lifestyle that can entail the actual difference amongst vigor and infirmity in after several years. (Baby and Adolescent Eating plan, Health insurance and Exercise, n.d.)
A lot of education, reports, studies and analysisâ regarding nourishment in the field have indicated that the answer to a troubles totally free healthier lifetime is based on a healthful upbringing. And naturally, the original year soon after arrival of any newborn baby is quite really important. It should certainly are the delicate period of a toddler and is related to its really tactical. The much more years (and child-hood) is known as an period of psychological and physical innovations, and as such cannot be ignored.
An illustration is often that babies understand how to chew at about 6 or several months of age; hence at this moment they are simply developmentally set to ingest nourishment. If robust snacks absorption is withheld till a after your age, a child are going to have significantly more problem in accepting them. (Nourishment in Infancy: Supplying inside the 1st Year of Lifetime, n.d.) Consequently it is always recommended to make young boys and girls take in the appropriate nutrition within the suitable your age.
The key an important part of baby nourishment is breastfeeding. Advantages of breasts milk products for the baby are gigantic. The inadequacy of chest whole milk to infant ends up in a great number of diseases, in certain cases deaths extremely. The reason being that the dairy is packed with proteins and some whitened circulation tissues. In truth, the international UNICEF projects for nursing have evidently saved six zillion infants on an annual basis. (OâBrien, n.d.) Hassle-free access, cleanness, appropriate environment, uncontaminated and sterile and clean caliber are merely a part of its other strengths.
Depending on longitudinal tests, it is said that infancy and toddler-hood are the summit age ranges for progress faltering, specified micronutrient deficiencies, and very common child years health conditions along the lines of diarrhoea. Natural deficits that show up on these formative decades have speedy and long-term outcomes. (They really get worse in the future daily life; mainly because the particularly reasons for the childâs health and wellbeing is weaker.) The first kind does include postponed motor unit and mental building; the latter is assigned to impairments in intellectual functioning, tasks ability, reproductive consequences, and overall health for the duration of adolescence and adulthood. (Children and Adolescent Diet regime, Health insurance and Physical Demands, n.d.). Food intake also typically improves the defense performance on the young child; both for immediate and long-term advantages.
