“Donatello!” The purple banded turtle paused in his run after his brothers and father as the temple literally began to vanish around them. Turning around, he spied his youngest sibling, actively stumbling and clutching at his head. “Michelangelo!” He immediately rushed back to his sibling’s side “What is it?!” “They hurt….” he whimpered “They hurt so much Donnie!” Michelangelo had not called him “Donnie” since they were quite young and struggled with one another’s lengthy names at times. They’d all come to prefer their full names though and nicknames had fallen by the wayside. “Here..” Donatello swung his brother’s arm over his shoulder “Lean on me, little brother.” Thus they started forward again, with the scientific turtle doing most of the walking. Michelangelo continued to stumble, his eyes tightly shut and obviously in immense pain. Donatello could only imagine. He was unnerved by this place and he wasn’t a sensitive empath. They weren’t moving fast enough and Donatello began to dread that they would be lost here as everything around them began to vanish. He had to squint to keep his other two brothers in sight and any shouting was quickly swallowed up by the atmosphere. Stopping, Donatello crouched to the ground and pulled his younger brother across his shoulders in a fireman carry before standing and rushing forward once more. Now, they could move substantially faster. His brother had never been very heavy to him and right now, he was barely moving at all. In fact, the only sign that he was even alive was his rapid breathing. Too rapid. “Slow your breathing,” Donatello snapped. “You’ll hyperventilate.” “Trying…” Michelangelo wheezed. “Don’t try.” Donatello snapped again “Do.” Allowing himself a light chuckle as they ran, he added “What is it that Yoda always says?” “Do…or…do not.” Michelangelo managed. “There…is…no…try.” “So do it.” Donatello remarked “I know you tell me that it’s hard to block out emotions so try to focus on mine instead.” “Di…version.” Michelangelo remarked as he closed his eyes tight and attempted to do what his brother asked “That’s always worked best for you.” Donatello said simply. He was slowly but assuredly catching up to the rest of his family and he could feel the cool air from outside the temple. “We’re almost there, Michelangelo. Hang in there.” Nodding, Michelangelo clung tightly to his brother, as if he would vanish under his grip if he didn’t. Focus…focus…focus So easy to say, so hard to do. He felt all that anger, sadness, misery, depression….this entire place, temple and forest alike were soaked in it. He felt sick. Physically, spiritually and mentally. Fever ravaged his body and by the way his brother tended, he knew he could feel it. It felt like dozens of souls were clambering for his own and no matter how much he tried, he couldn’t help them. Too many of them and the emotional energy it was taking was too much. Walls…put up your walls, he tried to coach himself but it was no use. Too tired, too worn, too frightened. He slept. ***

So cold. So cold. So cold… All darkness and cold and hurt. Lovers betrayed. Children lost, stability gone, deep seated demons of inner voices and images not there. All swirling around his head at once and he couldn’t cast any of them out. Howling and screaming, all of them. Shouting. He wanted them quiet. Anything to make them be quiet! “…chelangelo…” Wait…someone calling him? But…none of these things used his name. “…langelo, c'mon, open your eyes.” Eyes…But he could see them…all of them. Broken spirits that groaned and moaned and bled but didn’t bleed and… Screaming, so much…screaming…they clawed at him, tugged, yanked, cut, until everything was red hot. Everything burned! Everything hurt and nothing was stopping it. “Shh….” another voice. Young but older than him. “Shh, just relax.” Then coolness. Coolness that soothed that savage burn. The voices were duller now. The feeling of depression that fought to swallow him was lessening, as if it were further away. And all around him, feelings of comfort, of safety, of security. “Can you open your eyes and look at me, Michelangelo?” Eyes…yes, yes, he was in the Astral Plane. That’s where he was. So, yes, drift back…find your center again… His vision was blurry a moment, swayed and then it finally cleared somewhat, three green masses came into view, followed by a smaller brown one that was gently dabbing the coldness on his forehead. He shook, visibly and blinked three times. The blurb furthest to his right smiled a bit and asked, “There we go. There’s those baby-blues.” Another blink and now he could see, somewhat. “Wha..what happened?” “We’re out of the forest, Michelangelo,” Donatello informed him. “About two miles out. we had to stop and try and get you a little more stable.” “St…able?” He inquired again, his brain hurting. “Not a horse…” He groaned then realized, of course…other stable. It was so hard to think straight..“i..I mean…” “Shh, relax.” Leonardo. “Master Splinter said when your spiritual side couldn’t take anymore, the body reacted.” “Indeed.” Splinter’s voice cut in and he placed another cold compress on his son’s forehead. “You have an intense fever, my son.” “We’re…out…” he muttered and Raphael responded. “Oh, we’re out. Never going back there!” He assured his brother. “All those…spirits.” Michelangelo shuddered “So lost. So scared…I couldn’t…they wouldn’t let me help them…” “Shh,” Leonardo again “Michelangelo, you can’t help anyone that won’t accept it. You only have so much strength. We…I…never should have insisted we go in there. I didn’t think of how it would affect you and…” “No…” Michelangelo argued “I…should be able to…block this and…” “My son,” Splinter spoke softly “You have a gift and while you have strong command of it, you cannot control all of it.” Blinking once, Michelangelo’s overloaded brain opted that it did not want to spend any more time trying to figure things out. So with a groan, he shuddered and slipped back into sleep.

Aha! Validation after *checks notes* 27 years of fanfiction!

It makes me sad that people still don’t know what Mikey’s ‘thing’ is.

I was watching Tales and they flat out have someone asks what his thing is if Leo is the Leader, Raph is the tough one and Donnie is the smart one.

I see people asking to this day what his role on the team is.

I remember a review when Rise came out asking if all the characters are funny party dudes, what makes Mikey stand out?

It drives me cuckoo with a side of bananas.

Yes,Mikey is the Goof off, yes he’s the jokester, yes he’s the chill one but he’s so so much more than that.

Across every iteration of Tmnt, there has always been a major trait unique to Mikey.

His heart!

Mikey is the HEART.

The most empathetic of the brothers,

the most emotionally intelligent.

The one always willing to reach out and help someone

Even if he has to go against his own FATHER!

The sunshine in the dark!

The emotional center!

I’ve always felt like I’m inadequate at comforting others, since I find it rather hard to empathize even if I can sympathize. My first instinct is always to try and fix whatever hurt them, but more often than not, things are rarely so simple as to have an easy fix. Sometimes all you can do is offer your support.

So, I’m relating to Donnie in this one! I get so internally flustered when I have to comfort a crying person lol, not that I’m going to let them know that. However, this is also inspired by my oldest brother, who is very similar to me in that way. Even if he had no clue what to do with his little sibling bawling their eyes out over something silly, he still cared enough to sit with me until I calmed down, no matter how confused he was with my dramatics lmao

Mikey might be crying, but don’t worry. He’s a growing boy and he’s got some big emotions to figure out still, but nothing terrible caused this. If anything he probably got some light teasing from the others and it hit a bit of a sore spot. He’ll be alright lol

His eyes turn cold when she ask him how bad you were at it after he came once

She sits up straight and, sadly, couldn't turn her gaze away from her when she wishes she had

"I think you're the only one remembering it that way."

He's not joking around when it comes to you, and she for sure regretting it when everyone stopped listening to her around the table

Chifuyu

He's silly and kind, it's good to be around him you get that and all your friends feel safe around him for this reason

But you never expect to one of them to turned it against you when he's just nice and making sure they're safe

You're choked the first time you heard her talking like this about you while you were go for a few minutes, with him sitting next to her

"I've never noticed though, I have no idea what you're talking about"

He plays dumb but you can tell in his voice is not joking around anymore

She's doesn't insist when you came back, but he makes sure to mention it so you can defend yourself

And when everyone take your side you felt slightly better, even more with him taking your defense without hesitation

Mikey

That's the worst idea anyone can have

Mikey thinks so highly about you, maybe a bit too much but that makes him your number one supporter

Looking down on you to try to win him over is the dumbest thing to do

He's quick to react, the second she pushed you down to her up, his eyes are on her and he's moving closer

"Talk shit about my gf one more time, I dare you"

He doesn't do anything else, doesn't touch her but that's because he respects woman and don't fight people who can't defend themselves

Or else he would've hit her in the face

2003 Mikey can't be left on his own because he'll steal cars, cause explosions, adopt stray cats, use the world as a skate park, and knock cops over like bowling pins. He'll also not notice his own injuries and will shrug them off if they're bad, but play them up if they're mild, because he lives for the bit. He's your best friend, your favorite comedian, your getaway driver, your shoulder to cry on, and your adventure time partner.

Yapping about Leo

This.

He just looks so kind. Oftentimes, the animations are very over the top and cartoonish (which I love too, btw!), but these pictures, it feels like there's a soul behind them.

I don't know, maybe I've just been a Leo fan for so long that I've started seeing things, but these feel like real emotions to me.

Overall, Leo is a very empathic character. Mikey is seen as the glue that holds the team together, but I think Leo plays his part in that as well. He's also the one who tells everyone they did a good job as a team or individually.

I keep thinking about him making fun of Casey constantly, and his fist bump with Vern, or him working the crowd on Halloween. And his eye rolls at Raph and Leo

Can be annoying af and play dumb, but half the time he knows way more than he let's on. And it's SUPER hard to get him angry.

Would be in a fraternity tbh. And like, seven sport teams.

The world is a lesser place with him cooped up away from it.

He's a HUGE teaser and talker. Loves to flirt and prank and play the vibes.

He's a NATRUAL at it

Give him ONE conversation. ONE chance, and he can get literally anyone out of their shell.

Loves having April or Casey or Vern around. Loves teasing them or harassing them tbh.

The bigger his social circle, the better his life.

Is usually a HUGE buffer between humans and his grumpy, tired brothers.

He would be the LIFE of the party. Would be an excellent host of an event, because he'd be everywhere talking to everyone. Remembering everyone by name and face, introducing people to one another, so on and so forth.

He would have multiple friend groups everywhere he goes, with all sorts of different types of people.

Out of his brothers, I see Mikey having the body count tbh

Also probably jumped into a relationship too soon and got hurt early on. He'll be way more ready for the next one.

The BEST out of all his brothers at reading social cues and body language. By FAR.

Can find something to talk about with ANYONE

He's been wishing to socialize his WHOLE LIFE. So he DO!

Probably the only one that can confront and process trauma in a healthy manner.

Not at all afraid of deeper, more meaningful conversations.

Often finds himself the one initiating deep conversations with people who need it the most (his brothers).

He knows there is a time and place for problem solving. And sometimes you just gotta sit with your feels.

Donatello might not be EXTROVERTED but he is outgoing.

Second to Mikey, everyone in his family has a close relationship with Donnie.

Super caring and fun and inquisitive with everyone he meets.

He'll be down for ANYTHING. Sports, games, cooking, drives, crafts, working out, adventures or pranks or geeky movie nights.

He might not always be good at INICIATING these with strangers but he loves going along with stuff.

Loves showing people his projects and stuff and letting people use them or have them.

Will be there for his friends the instant they ask.

At a party he'd be in another room having a conversation with two or three people.

But I also see him hanging around girls a little more than guys. Finds the girlies to be easier company than guys.

He's been on discord for YEARS. He had human friends before even Mikey did.

But.

He's HYPERVIGALANT of the vibe

Extreme empath.

He does NOT like confrontation.

A HUGE people pleaser.

Feels he's stepping on eggshells around his loved ones and friends. In an effort to keep them happy.

He's a sensitive guy.

If he's told to shut up or be quiet, especially if he's excited or talking outloud- he's modified. He WILL shut up. For a while.

His brothers know this. While they get exasperated sometimes, they rarely interrupt him.

Does NOT like gossip. Don't gossip with him, he hates it

Makes him feel gross and mean.

Hates when people are upset or sad in any way.

When vibes get rough he does not cope well. Often chooses to avoid or straight up leave.

When things get heated he gets overstimulated quickly.

If he can't leave, he shuts down. He won't talk and if he does it's very quiet

Doesn't know how to help or address emotional things either. He prefers to let it go and just move on, leaving stuff unaddressed.

He's an outgoing and pleasant guy, but he definitely doesn't mix with everyone.

Meeting Raphael is a terrifying experience.

Because he talks and looks at you like he hates you already.

But he doesn't hate people.

He just sucks at them.

Raph wants a normal life just as badly as Mikey does.

Raphs love language is harassment???

He shows his love by annoying his loved ones. Or through teasing and banter. Or wrestling his bros to the ground or pull them into rough hugs.

However

When he meets new people he isn't there to make FRIENDS.

He's there to let you know that if you bullshit with his family you're gonna get whooped.

So he will posture and glare and tower and maybe even roll his neck or crack knuckles to anyone.

Literally anyone.

Remember how rude he was to April?

So when he can't do any of that- no banter, no pranks, no wrestling and no INTIMIDATING-

He is COMPLETELY at everyone's mercy

Put him in a group of girls, or take him to a party or a bar. ANYTHING out of his comfort zone.

He's very awkward.

Only because he's kinda quiet

And honestly SUPER shy.

Wants to be liked SUPER badly.

He doesn't know how to make friends. At all

Flirt with Raph. I dare you.

You'd terrify him

Is the type of guy at a party to stick to the side of someone he knows and never. Leave. It.

But he finds out he gets along with blue collar guys the most.

And Raph has this super power

He can detect if you're a good or bad character super quickly. Much quicker than everyone else in his family. Like, one conversation in.

Not that he really believes himself. He thinks everyone's out to get him. or his family

If he's not making fun of you, you know he doesn't like you.

Is the type of guy to have quality over quantity relationships.

Hates texting. Honestly hates social media and technology beyond like...insta reels or something. He doesn't like sitting on his phone or video games all the much. Half because he breaks things easily or gets easily frustrated at leaning how to work it.

Rather be doing something active or working on a car or build something or carve stuff.

Might not be as outgoing as Donnie or Mikey, but if people manage to ACTIALLY get him to do something fun, he is ALL IN and having a BLAST.

The kinda guy to crash at his friends house and just chill.

He recharges when he's in proximity of his loved ones. Not always SOCIALIZING but having his people close.

He struggles to socialize even with his BROTHERS

Who are the only people in the world he allows himself to be even semi relaxed around

A conversation with anyone other than his dad and brothers is the opposite of a relaxing/easy activity.

He's honorable, polite, and formal.

But Leo is and EXTREMLY cold character.

Sometimes even a bit cruel and scary to strangers.

Has a weird habit of wrapping his arm kindly around someone he's about to hurt

Struggles to see even April as more than an 'asset' or 'person dad holds dear'

Doesn't see Vern as a friend. Doesn't see Casey as a friend.

Leo is the only turtle April doesn't have a strong connection to. Not out of lack of trying.

Tolerates social situations only if he falls into a leading (controlling) role.

Doesn't like large groups of people.

Very quiet otherwise.

Struggles to initiate activities with his brothers.

He sucks at it.

He is always receptive to when they reach out to him though

And kinda has a fear of getting turned down. Getting turned down by his brothers makes him sick to his stomach.

Not that he admits it.

He also doesn't handle rejection with any grace. Gets just a LITTLE pushy to make you either feel bad or like he's in charge

His brothers still gotta tolerate him being a little bossy and stuck up and a fun-sucker while they hang out with him. They know he can't help it.

But Leo is super relieved every single time they invite him to do something.

What would Leo be like at a party? Leo never WENT to the party. And if he DID, he'd be outside, trying to soak in the quiet. Listening to the party from out here.

or hug him, or just express somehow they still want him around or like him. Or love him. Because those moments are getting rarer and rarer the older they get.

He's completely alone other than his dad. At least he's thought so his whole life

Would be the one petting the cat. Or dog. Not the type to go LOOKING for it, but if it came to him, he would.

Yes, he texts, but never outside of absolute necessity. Or if his brothers remind him of April's birthday.

He likes to read

Even if Donnie, Mikey and Raph are together in the lair having fun, Leo is often by himself somewhere else.

He recharges alone. He does calligraphy and he sketches SOMETIMES. Little stick figures fighting with space guns or something.

But a lot of what he reads are super geeky stuff. Like star wars novels or manga.

But don't tell anyone.

Splinter is his preferred company. He adores time with his dad. He'll spar and train and talk with his dad often.

Doesn't care about having friends but he wants a girlfriend SUPER badly. More than all three of his brothers combined

Being alone with him sucks if you like to talk. He gives you a LOOK that SCREAMS shut the fuck up.

It takes EXTREMLY specific personalities to get Leo a little soft for them. A quiet person with a good sense of humor.

And the likely hood he'll ever get out to find and meet them is next to none existent.

But hey

Even after like, ALL OF THIS

but you can't. and mikey is already dead. and there's nothing you can do to change it.

Rise Characterizations Pt. 4!!!!

Nearing an end with writing notes for turtles. Thinking of posting about April and Splinter separately, and then a big post for side characters.

Raph, Leo, and Donnie here. Now let's start with

Mikey Character Notes

Language Habits:

Catchphrase: "razzmatazz"

Tendency to "hoo-ha!"

Uses aave/bae

Like Raph and Leo, he will verbalize his attacks, but notably less than the aforementioned two. His most common phrases: "power whip jitsu" (chain moves), and "power fun jitsu" (use of his fire)

Shortens words/phrases in his excitement (i.e. the famous omigosh), but lengthens words in his wonder/amazement like drawing out wow into wooooooow

Uses a lot of idioms, i.e. "give us the 911", "hit the bricks", "you've been workin' a nerve"

Uses a lot of alliterations, especially when describing something

Refers to splinter as "pop" or "dad", with the rare "father" (usually for dramatics)

Will refer to others using "chico", "dude", or "man"

Answers the phone with "shell-o"

Personality:

Oblivious. A lot of stuff goes over his head, or he'll pick on the wrong thing to focus on. Like thinking they're part imitation crab men

Passionate. He throws himself into everything, whether that be cooking, fighting, or art. Sometimes this focus comes at his own detriment (i.e. forgetting to tell his brothers that Meatsweats mutated on t.v. bc he was cooking his pork risotto)

Optimistic, a dreamer. Not one to back down from doom and gloom, and is often among the first of the brothers to take action. Has a lot of perseverance

Believes the best in everyone. He can easily connect and empathize with others, most notably Draxum

Blunt, he doesn't hide his opinions and can accidentally be a little too harsh. On the other hand, he uses his persona of "Doctor Delicate Touch" to purposefully use his bluntness. He doesn't really much to hide on what he thinks about people

Sensitive, he's easily swayed by the emotion or pathos of others (read: gullible). This also mean his ego is easily damaged, which can contribute to his competitiveness with Leo at times and his inferiority complex with Raph babying him

The emotional heart of the team, he keeps the brothers grounded in empathizing with others

Energetic. Mikey's the wildcard. No one can guess what's coming out of his mouth next, and his fighting style is very innovative. All his energy gives him a charming amount of "razzmatazz"

Firey. Mikey's a pretty expressionate guy. He doesn't hide his emotions, and he doesn't really hide his anger. Sometimes this comes out in his bluntness, and sometimes this comes out in strained rage that has a boiling point

Looks up to his brothers. He has a lot of admiration for his older brothers. Whenever he's put in a corner he thinks what would Raph do, he's grateful for Leo's advocacy, and likes spending a lot of time with Donnie and his inventions. He also has a need to prove himself to his older brothers due to his admiration
