since the beginning of this blog people have asked me. how do i get a job in botany. and i am here to say i do not know because the only jobs i have ever had have been in agriculture, the section of applied botany other than natural resources that makes stable 9 to 5 money long term. my career path is more winding than i wanted it to be...... my motivations complex..... i want to go to plant grad school some day for plant evolutionary biology my deepest most heartfelt love but at the same time manual labor entices me with a deep urgency right now at age 25.... ive been hitting the gym for the past 2 months daily for the arduous pack test because i NEED to toil or i WILL perish and i also find helping people rewarding and these things come in direct conflict with what i thought was a pretty straightforward academia storyline. i can carry 20 pounds 3 miles in under 45 minutes now which doesnt sound like a lot but in my defense i didnt play sports in high school. just got my healthcare CPR certification and im starting EMT classes soon tbh

He set down the PCR, finally taking a good look at Daniel’s nose in the bright lights of the first-aid room. The purpling, crooked bruise sat awkwardly on his otherwise rather good-looking face. Max made sure to palpate the injury gently but firmly enough to feel the break in the cartilage, stopping whenever Daniel hissed in pain under his hands. From this close he could see every detail of the man’s face, from the pinch of his brow when Max pressed on the bruise to the way his long eyelashes fluttered shut when Max finally took his hands away.

“It definitely feels broken,” said Max, noting down his findings on the PCR. “I don’t think we need to call an ambulance, but you should go to the ER tonight to get it checked out.”

Daniel grimaced, the scrunch of his face looking painful on his already swollen nose. “Like, right now?”

“I’m still a little concerned about your head, and for your nose the sooner you can get to a real doctor, the better,” said Max. “I can tell you from experience that the music does not get any more interesting. And it would be a shame to not at least try to fix a nose as nice as yours.”

He wasn’t really sure why he said that last bit, but at least it made Daniel beam. His smile was so genuine even from behind a wad of gauze and a broken nose. Max found that he couldn’t help but return it, his cheeks warming. “Aw, shucks. In that case, I’ll get down there right away.”

it has been noted at work that I am very good at moving and positioning patients, and that I seem to know instinctively what a stable position for an unconscious patient is and isn’t when moving them from floor to wheelchair, wheelchair to cot, cot to wheelchair, or any of these to ambulance stretcher. The reason for this is because when I stand up and stretch between the hours of 6am-about 10:30 am, I’m usually given about 5 seconds to put my body somewhere before I go completely dark. I’ve learned through this experience where an unconscious body can and cannot go without falling on the ground many times over.

I've never heard of emts working only at events? What's that like for you if you don't mind my asking?

Yeah, there are ambulance companies that staff certain events, but there's some event specific companies out there lmao. For me specifically, it's almost entirely college events, whether it's happening on a campus or not. It's not great, usually pretty boring, but it's better than being on an ambulance or in a hospital. We do get actual emergencies sometimes, but usually it's just getting drunk people to the tent or giving out water and bandaids lmao. Again, boring as fuck, but I chose this over working on a 911 rig, so that's on me 😔 if I'm being so real tho, other than my coworkers, the best part of the job is the food lmaoooo it's so good and all the food trucks/food booths give discounts or free food to us depending on the location and event. And there's almost always a ton of downtime, so I basically just get paid to sit there and vibe for the most part

Fucking love when I ask my emt students what they do when they arrive on scene to a patient without a pulse and their immediate response is "I'm gonna call 911" bc then I have the honor and pleasure of reminding them that they are, in fact, 911 and then watching them panic
