2024 is the year where I got a job at a library (huzzah!!!) which meant that I read a lot. and a lot of that was from previous years! so here's my top 10 not of 2024 list, which is 40% books.

a wizard of earthsea (ursula k. le guin, 1968): I can't believe I've never read these books. I love le guin's writing, and excellent podcast "shelved by genre" reading these was a good incentive for me to actually get off my ass and read a bunch of le guin. her book of poetry from 2017 was almost on this list as well, beautiful and funny and old. going to go after more this year!

the seventh seal (dir. ingmar bergman, 1957): did you know that one of the classics of cinema is really good? also really funny? so go play chess with death and think about the end of all things

scavengers reign (joseph bennett and charles huettner, hbomax, 2023): this show made me weep. beautifully haunting and hauntingly beautiful, a scifi story that could be a cosmic horror if you forget that even the horrors are part of a greater ecosystem, and sometimes the horrors are not unknowable but merely unknown and strange. I still think about this show, and probably will for the rest of my life. best show of the decade so far.

look back (fujimoto tatsuki, 2021): putting the manga over the (also exceptional) ova because I think fujimoto's overall artistry hit just a bit harder. a story about the reasons we make art, and the companionship in finding another weirdo to make art with, and how we move on while looking back at what inspired us

a visit to san sibilia (peter eijk, 2021): I tried to play a few solo/journaling rpgs this year, and san sibilia was my favorite. also has a great playlist!

true detective s1 (showrunner nic pizzolatto, hbo, 2014): watched this after finishing aw2 and in the run-up to "night country" (also good, better in retrospect than I gave it credit for at the time), and this classic of Two Weird Dude Cops Coping Poorly with Manhood is excellent television. still bummed it wasn't as paranormal as it could have been, but them's the breaks.

"COUNTER/weight" (friends at the table, 2015-2016): come for the mecha rpg, gorgeous worldbuilding with millennia-old robots and sociopolitical intrigue, and the mashup of space/cyberpunk/giant robot anime; stay for aria joy scoring girls by failing super duper hard. also giant tarps.

gris (nomada studio, 2018): both the game and the ost, so I'm cheating here for a top 10. a story about grief and mourning and song and color, up there with scavengers reign for most beautiful thing I experienced this year.

palestine (joe sacco, 1991-1992): sacco's graphic journalism of his time in palestine during 1991 and 1992 is both of its time (specifically right after the first intifada, with ongoing riots and imprisonment and interviews with palestinians of all backgrounds) and imminently timely (given the ongoing genocide in gaza and israel's occupation of palestine). it's a hard project to read, but invaluable for being incredibly humanizing, and humbling, and necessary. sacco's upcoming collaboration with art "maus" spiegelman is going to be one of my most anticipated comics.

a memory called empire (arkady martine, 2019): do you like political intrigue space operas? do you like murder mysteries? do you like future cities heavily influenced by byzantium and the aztec empires? how about language, linguistics, and the reaches of empire? wait, this is tumblr. do you like messy gays? if so, have I got the book for you! (also the sequel, a desolation called peace, is fantastic, so you've got TWO books in one recommendation! aha, I cheat again at top 10 lists!)

anyways i hate kaoru from idolmaster sideM. i need all my osomatsu-san side blog followers to know that i hate this man. "i need a lot of money fast to pursue an extremely niche medical research track, which is why i quit my stable and high paying job as a surgeon to become an idol while having no soft skills, physical strength or stamina, or interest in getting along with people" are you Stupid??

he's not even using his idol clout to spread awareness of the rare disease he's trying to cure (like SEM does) so it can secure funding, he sees it 100% as a job and refuses to have fun, he is actively unpleasant and uncooperative in every interaction with his coworkers because he's trying to "rise to the top". it seems like the only thing he has going for him are his looks and that he kind of liked to sing when he was a kid. why not become a model at that point when you have the personality of a wet tree trunk. or better yet why not STAY A FUCKING DOCTOR!!!!!

2024 is now over, for better and for worse. it's been a hell of a year: switching careers, leaving the academy, going back to uni in a fully different field, getting a fulltime job that I start on Monday, starting up my goodreads account again--

all of which means it's time for my annual top 10 of things that I enjoyed the very most out of the whole year! unfortunately I'd been using cohost to keep track of my weekly media usage, and well, that site went a lil bit kaput. hopefully 2025 I do a better job of keeping track of these sorts of things.

without further ado, thoughts etc. under the cut.

end of year top 10 tag

yatagarasu: the raven does not choose its master (pierrot): out of this whole list, if you only experience one thing, it should be this. a court drama set in the fantasy world of the yatagarasu, giant three-legged ravens who can also take human form, the first cour follows two interlocking stories: yukiya, a young man who's the adoptive son of a rural lord roped into serving the crown prince, and asebi, one of the four women in the running to become the prince's new wife. it's got twists and turns, a fully realized world, and spectacular character and plot. highly recommended.

alan wake 2: night springs dlc (remedy entertainment): yes, yes, I put aw2 on my top 10 last year, but see, this is THREE alan wake dlcs in one! which is chock full of remedy's wild-ass ideas, from rose the waitress's uh....unique take on mr. scratch (matthew poretta's line readings are best of the year), to the bonkers story starring Actual Real Life Actor Shawn Ashmore that needs to be experienced. also, makes me think that maybe integrated universes aren't totally lost? didn't think that was possible. also, one of the best bops of the year with the theme song. speaking of which...

brat (charli xcx): is it the best album of the year? no. is it my favorite? probably yes that's why it's here. "sympathy is a knife" is my favorite song of the year

worlds beyond number: this beat out dimension 20 for my favorite actual play of the year, and it wasn't even close. I adore this podcast so very much. come for the longform storytelling of "the wizard, the witch, and the wild one," stay for the balls-to-the-wall chaos of "space cram."

tidal creatures (seanan mcguire): middlegame is one of my favorite books of all time, and the third book in the series feels like a return to form, overlapping a murder mystery, the weirdos you meet around college campuses, and multiple mythologies around the moon. good stuff.

dandadan (tatsu yukimoto, anime production by science saru): just a few things in dandadan: aliens! ghosts! demons! kaiju! sex comedy! jumanji! true love! giant robots! ranma 1/2! and teenagers falling in love and making friends! the manga slaps, science saru is doing impeccable work on the anime, and I cannot WAIT for more.

dragon age the veilguard (bioware): this game feels like coming home to a warm bath after a really long and not always successful bathroom renovation, if that makes sense? sure, it's not top 5 bioware games, but it does have a strong plot, fun characters, combat that surprised me in not sucking horribly, and one of the best act 3s in bioware. also the best boys of 2024: assan the griffin and manfred the skeleton.

star trek: lower decks (paramount+): what an ending to lwd, my favorite modern trek crew, and it's not even close. cerritos strong.

witch hat atelier (shirohama kamome): these girls have done nothing wrong in their lives, I love the magic system almost as much as I love the gorgeous detail on the artwork, and I fear for when the anime comes out and the internet gets another Sad White Haired Anime Teacher Man to moon over.

genshin impact (hoyoverse): yes I'm just as mad as you that the weeb video game is on this list. damn you hoyo for making a game this good. anyways I gotta go get primos to try to pull mavuika now so bye

(Now this is the final one) Top 10 Gintaka moments

Arranged chronologically because it was too difficult to choose. Spoilers ahead.

1. Childhood glimpses

Beyond detailed backstories, Sorachi treated us to brief glimpses of the relationships between Gintoki, Takasugi, and Katsura during their time as children in Shouka Sonjuku. These panels showed Takasugi’s frustration at losing to Gintoki and being teased about his height, Katsura occasionally playing the mediator, and Takasugi's attempts to get back at Gintoki by annoying him in return (chs. 523, 519, 676, 591, 703).

2. Partners in crime

When Gintoki, Katsura, and Sakamoto set out to aid Takasugi, Sakamoto reminisced about the experiences they shared during the Joui War. He recognizes how close Gintoki and Takasugi are, being partners in crime but at the same time getting on each other's nerves and fighting all the time. We would later learn that it was something they loved to do, which may be why everyone who saw them is shown smiling (ch. 557).

3. Heaven

While fighting with the Kiheitai, Takasugi has a flashback of being wounded on the battlefield during the Joui War, and when he lost hope and looked to the heavens, he didn’t see a place to rest peacefully but instead saw the backs of his comrades fighting. He thinks of this while remembering Gintoki protecting him, which could be interpreted as Gintoki being like heaven for him in a way (ch. 639).

4. Watching him from afar

Before their famous meeting at the festival, the first time Takasugi sees Gintoki after 10 years is when he apparently went to meet Gengai, who was his ally in the terrorist attack he wanted to perpetrate against the Shogun, only to see the old man with the Yorozuya. This implies that Takasugi purposefully sought out Gintoki to have an exchange with him after such a long time (ch. 30).

5. Alone

When Itou Kamotarou allies with the Kiheitai with the intention of fracturing the Shinsengumi from within, he has an encounter with Takasugi where he reveals that he seeks recognition. However, Takasugi is able to point out that he just feels lonely. Later, when Bansai tells him that Gintoki said what he wants to protect hasn’t changed, Takasugi quickly becomes upset. This ties the two scenes together and shows how Takasugi thinks Gintoki no longer understands him (chs. 165, 168).

6. Unpacking gag panels

There were a couple of interesting occasions when Sorachi decided to use Takasugi for gags before his big fight against Gintoki. One instance involved Takasugi sending Gintoki a New Year’s card, either just breaking the 4th wall or mocking Gintoki after his vow to cut him down (or both). Another gag occurs in Gintoki’s imagination, where he envisions Takasugi avoiding contact in a ridiculous manner, not particularly bothered by the idea of him actually showing up and having to follow through on his earlier vow. Both moments suggest that Gintoki and Takasugi didn’t truly hate each other, despite how it might’ve initially appeared at that point in the manga (chs. 294, 453).

7. The same scent

Takasugi and Kamui meet as part of a Harusame plan where they’ve to kill each other. Before striking, Kamui notes that Takasugi has the same “scent” as someone he knows. Surprisingly, Takasugi immediately realizes that Kamui is referring to Gintoki, acknowledging their lingering similarities. Takasugi also seems aware of Kamui’s intent to kill Gintoki but doesn’t take it seriously, probably because he trusts that he’ll not die (ch. 310).

8. Last glance

After their climactic battle, Gintoki and Takasugi share a moment of mutual understanding. They openly acknowledge their bond as comrades and disciples of Shouyou, choosing to protect each other in a critical moment. While being aided by Kagura and Kamui, the two exchange a final glance before parting ways once again, contrasting their previous encounter, where they passed each other without acknowledgment (ch. 523).

9. Looking for Takasugi

Following their encounter at the ruins of Shouka Sonjuku and running away from Hijikata, Gintoki begins searching for Takasugi using a hilariously terrible drawing he himself made as a reference. He eventually meets Matako and Henpeita, who question him about Takasugi’s fate. Gintoki reassures them that he isn’t dead but reveals little else. At this point, Gintoki sees Takasugi as a friend and a fellow disciple of Shouyou, which motivates his efforts to join him despite Takasugi’s resistance (ch. 675).

10. Reason for world destruction

While escaping, Gintoki teases “Takasugi” about his antics. Feeling ignored after getting no response (and being so accustomed to provoking an immediate reaction) he tugs on his hair like a child seeking attention, suggesting it’s something he’s likely done more than once. Believing Takasugi to be bald, instead of making fun of him like he has done with other characters in the same situation, he tries to pump him up, encouraging him to shout out his catchphrase to boost his confidence, only to discover it was someone else wearing a wig (ch. 685).

Bonus' bonus: Magic trick

I couldn't leave out this silly gag that Sorachi drew on an extra page, where he offers a non-canon comedic moment between Gintoki and Takasugi. It acts as a lighthearted breather after their intense battle, providing a glimpse of the humor they might’ve shared in less serious situations (ch. 521+).

Top 10 2024

This has taken me weeks to figure out and put together. I really was not thrilled with shows this year. At first a majority of the shows were the short Japanese shows, but I felt like that was too simple so I went back and I thought about a lot things. Anyway here it is. Crazy how 3 shows from the end of the year made it into the top 😂

Also thank you bestie @gunsatthaphan for taking the time to make my gifs. You're the best! 💜

My Stand In was phenomenal. I couldn’t not give it the top spot. The story was so interesting and the acting was fantastic. Not only Poom, but Up just blew me away. I loved the way he played Ming. I was obsessed. Also Mek definitely had a blast playing the bad guy. Overall, highly recommend this show. It had a lot going for it.

Fourever You was the surprise of the year for me. OH EM GEE. I was obsessed from day 1 and as the show continues my love never wavered. It was so cute and so thought out. The characters had so much depth. There was so much story. The acting was so good. Chemistry on point. I can’t recommend this show enough. I love both couples equally which was shocking, but it’s just so good. Also spoiler alert the sweetest grandma characters. They always win me over with those as I was very close to my Bea Bea. Anyway please watch this one if you want to be all feelsy.

Miseinen: Mijukuna Oretachi wa Bukiyo ni Shin kochi or Our Youth, this show was something else. It is on the opposite end of the spectrum from Fourever You but wow was this powerful. There was so much angst, but I loved it. The development of the characters and their relationship was so interesting. Everything about this show was just wow. Their chemistry was also insane. TW abusive parent.

Century of Love was so fun! First of all, the chemistry between DaouOffroad is INSANE! I love them so much. This story was so interesting. I am a sucker for a good love story. This show just kept you hooked. The acting and characters were all phenomenal.

Only Boo was just such FLUFF. The two newbies SeaKeen did a great job. The story was interesting and I had a blast with them. I love the corny flirting and all the jokes. Also Book was there and I love him so there is that. Double also Milk was a side character.

Knock Knock Boys was just so fun. I was very iffy on the whole plot of the show at first, but my heart was stolen by Latte and then Lattealmond(hence the url change) I just loved them. Freaking adorable cutie pies. The story was so fun. There was lots of crack energy. I had a blast.

Two Worlds which is probably so controversial because I know it did not get a lot of love. I just enjoyed that the story was different. It was a little confusing at times, but I am a sucker for Nat Natasit. I just want to pocket him. MaxNat had great chemistry as always. I had to include it in the top.

We Are was not my favorite show by any means. I was pretty mid on it while it was airing. I am a huge AouBoom bias though and therefore I had to include it because Tan was not only my favorite charcater, but TanFang were adorable. All the couples were fine. The friend group was adorable. It was just a fun little show. Everyone delivered.

Summer Night I mainly watched for Mr. Dunk Natachai. I looooved his character and then of course my little nerdy side bl couple JewelTan. They were the cutest!! I'm a huge Harry Potter girl so the fact that they referred to it a lot really stole my heart. Just a warning the main story is really slow at times. I tended to fast forward lmao. Phuwin did not have the best chemistry with Parn.

See Your Love starts off very slow. This is definitely better as a binge becaue week to week was a little brutal. The story is so wholesome though with a side of the Taiwan heat. I had to round it out because the mains chemistry was FIRE!! It really reminded me of Kiseki at times.

So I do need to add that I loved Living With Him, Takara No Vidro and Sugar Dog Life. They were all very low heat and all very adorable. I really seemed to favor Japan this year lol. I also feel like I did not watch nearly as many shows as usual. I am still finishing The On1y One and Spare Me Your Mercy so I did not add them. Anyways this was fun!! Let me know your thoughts if you would like. I know I tend to disagree with people a lot. Lol

Top 10 lists are gradually coming out now that New Year is upon us. From Spotify Wrapped to even Crunchyroll arc. In Japan they are churning out lists of anime works that the audience likes for the year 2024.

Numan, for example, made a survey and this is the result.

A personal favourite and it seems to be the most favourite among the Japanese viewers is “Bang Brave Bang Bravern.” It is placed on No. 1. Isami and Lewis and friends, you guys bag the topmost award.

2. Oblivion Battery (it was fine and saw the appeal, besides another Youhei Azakami character, so yeah!)

4. Oshi no Ko (just started to watch it on Christmas Day but I saw the live action first and it was good!)
