You know how Emmrich had some spirits haunt that scammer's ass, so he'd change his ways...
Tumblr media
You know what would be a kinda cuter interpretation?
If he DIDN'T even ask them.
They just do that of their own accord, cuz they've been his friends since childhood and they feel that protective older sibling urge to threaten anyone who hurts his feelings >:)

Hey guys, did you know that it's actually ok to be a fan of a particular media, be aware of the themes and messages the writers put in said media, and still focus on characters and dynamics you enjoy, as well as see those elements in whatever light you want without you needing to feel like you're doing something wrong or immoral?

I tried drawing reeda because I love her. I have no idea what you had in mind for her design so I just re-read the chapter and went off of what your description was the best that I could. She gives me Painter vibes from pressure
Tumblr media
I LOVE THISSSSSSSSSSSSS THANK YOU!!!!!! Ford absolutely has a mini monitor like this in each room so he can see its messages!
Honestly REEDA's main design in my head fits Ford's lab, so it's a very retro cassette-futuristic style like you've illustrated. Think: how did people imagine the future was going to look in 197-something. All Commodores and IBM and thick plastic etc.
Ford's lab in mtb is designed with that exact aesthetic in mind, so terminals and things like this were at the forefront of my mind:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These types of terminals are primarily in the mainframe room that Reader goes through to access the lab. It's all set up with things like the above. Whereas REEDA's central screens in the main body of the lab look more like the ones in The Forbin Project:
Tumblr media
Except they're a mix of both of those aesthetics, so they're weirdly long CRT monitors suspended in a similar layout to the above!
Tumblr media
Here's another ss from Forbin bc it works along similar lines! And also it's a great movie and you should watch it!
#i really honestly think Ford's favourite movie is Alien#and so in mtb he just wanted a cool Nostromo type lab#and i thought the idea was funny and cute and in character so#also b u t t o n s#i think he's also incredibly nostalgic for a time he left behind and even though he dislikes tech when he leaves#he HAS to make use of it in alternate dimensions so grows a grudging acceptance for it#and i think he's AWFUL with earth tech and when he comes back and sees how minimalist everything is he hates it even more#but he's forced to engage with alien tech in his travels so he becomes used to it a bit more#and so he combines that aesthetic nostalgia with the advanced ability of alien tech#which is how he designs his lab#he prefers old-style ways of recording (his journals) but he knows he HAS to make use of digital record keeping to some extent#and he's come to understand its applications in foreign environments#so while he still records everything on paper#he utilises other aspects of tech if he has to#but he complains about it the whole time and he'd really just be happy with 8000 filing cabinets of a4 and a biro#but really considering all the information he retains and works on it means he needs a specialist set up#anyways shut UP fox we get it you like worldbuilding for this guy UGH enough#asks#ford asks#wb#mtb stuff#ALSO we do see that he makes use of tech in LL and so I think he makes himself get on with it where he has to#just to defend myself a bit#bc i know some people think he'd be very tech-phobic in general#but i disagree to a certain extent#like yes but actually also no#AND remember that Fidds installed REEDA#ford had no say in it#he just begrudgingly goes along with it and gradually learns that actually its quite useful (though he won't admit it)#anways I digress that was a real tirade for no real reason im just very passionate about Ford's experiences with alien tech

Advocacy and Art (PSA)
As somebody who was around during the AIDS crisis, I have a lesson to share. It's very short, and very simple, and very brutal.
Consuming art is just consumerism. Making art is the only real advocacy.
(obviously also advocacy is advocacy, I'm speaking in particular about fandom 'advocacy')
I learned this at museums, watching people discuss so many artists' final pieces of art. I learned this at clinics, when we ran campaigns to try and get support from the public. I learned this at the AIDS quilt, listening to people comment on how pretty some squares were.
Most of all I've learned this from the way I am still treated. If consuming art was advocacy that changed people's minds, then we wouldn't have dealt with the neglect and the active ignoring of the HIV/AIDS while it got worse and worse.
But art is only advocacy if you're making it. Consuming art is not advocacy.
Consuming shows, movies, and art made by others is not advocacy. Awareness is a very limited form of advocacy only needed for things people are actually unaware of beforehand.
Thus, for queers, the only advocacy possible through art is making your own. Consumption is not activism.

Anyone out there got a solution for when you're feeling really stuck with your art and everyone and their mother tells you the solution is to do studies and figure drawings and other such things but even just thinking about doing those things makes you Spiral and want to Kill Yourself?
#monster noises#it's 1am no one will see this it's fine#it's a genuine problem though i Wish i could be aotherfucker who found it engaging and satisfying to do figure drawing#but i both A) had some bad experiences with this type of learning in highschool that i guess kinda make them triggering for me i guess?#and B) my brain doesn't seem to be able to like.. Learn Things.... That Way.... or at least not Obviously#i mean obviously i've improved as an artist over time in general#and i won't lie and say i've Never done figure drawing or studies or anything#but i never leave those situations feeling like i've Learned anything#mostly i've just sat for several hours growing increasinglyore frustrated#at my limitations and inability to achieve what i feel should come to me intuatively#and even if i Did feel like i've learned something i can seemingly never turn around and then apply it to something else#my brain does not make those lateral connections#it's why i can't do word problems in math.#and plus i also find stuff like figure drawing especially Rarely helps me make progress on the parts of my work i Actually want to improve#fluidity/mobility/stylization and surrealism#and only reinforces practices i want to pull away from#realism/'correctness'#all this combined leaves me just kinda stuck because i really can't power through my fear of these practicing methods#because i also don't find them useful#but i have no alternatives because it's like.. the only thing anyone suggests because theoretically is Does Work#but just not when you're Specifically Busted like I'm Busted#and so I just continue to stagnate until idk.. i find something else that can abruptly and suddenly launch me forward again?.#augh.. being an artist is The Most Enjoyable (_=<=)_

dude. starting to wish id gone with the teach yourself series for language learning vs the hugo in 3 months series
#now to be fair the edition i have is from the. 90s LOL and i chose it cos it had audio and the one thing im suffering with is listening comp#but. ive had a look at the teach yourself swedish edition i have (also 90s). and. god. it looks significantly better#ie more engaging (pictures LOL). more varied but also practical activities. a lot of relevant cultural info not mentioned in the hugo serie#and thats from a skim. the engaging part i will actually say IS important because the one thing youre fighting to do when learning#is actually retaining anything AND THEN being able to recall it/actually produce language#THAT SAID. the drive i had gotten those books from was actually taken down (hit with copyright infringement)#and the backup of that drive was also taken down#which is a massive shame and i hope op is able to get it back up eventually. there were a LOT of resources on there#that said i did keep a local copy of the swedish folder. no idea how id get that to anyone though cos the files are huge#i know its like. i can still DO the series LMAO#but im worried id start to do the thing i did with japanese. which is to keep engaging with like beginner level texts/courses#instead of focusing on actually like. progressing lol.#the vocabulary DID differ greatly from the skim though so i should take a look anyhow if not actually complete it#TO BE CLEARRR i did find the hugo book helpful. my only prior experience learning swedish before then was. du*lingo (🤮)#but like. ur obviously not getting 'fluent' in 3 months with the book alone lol

fascinating revelations out of my dad's professional coaching of the whole family today
my mom scored astonishingly high on empathy and caring for a woman who seemed to find it next to impossible to express that to me
my dad has done an insane amount of work to be so warm and personable considering that his natural inclination is towards strong reserve rooted in anxiety (just like me!!)
my sister shocked - SHOCKED 🙄 - to learn that she scores almost zero in empathy AND very high on manipulation
actually shocking reveal that my sister always knew she was my mom's favorite. like I kind of assumed she was mean to both of us but apparently most of the biting comments were for me
#in regard to number 3 I'm like bestie. you think you're the protagonist of the world. you tried to get me to come out to our parents#as a way to manipulate them into being happier for you for your engagement#you have a movie script in mind for your life and you try to get others to fit it#of COURSE you're low in empathy and high in manipulation#the mom's favorite thing was actually very surprising to me to hear bc i've never thought about it that way#mom's attitude towards me was so pervasive to my experience of childhood that i never considered that i had it worse than her#vis a vis getting chewed out and in trouble and snapped at and criticized constantly#the impression i got was that mom thought i was a crybaby and fragile and forgetful and dowdy and needy#my sister by contrast was the kind of girlboss my mom could like more easily#(i do wonder then that mom's bestie is a lot like me)#i know my sister got some Mom Comments and impatience and fighting too but it doesn't seem to have stuck with her so much#i dunno how i feel about it all#a lot and i mean A Lot to consider#also learned my sister doesn't really remember our grandma on mom's side and picked up a vibe that she's sad about it#i was a little dismissive in the moment of the idea that she was doting bc i remember her being very brisk and exacting#but i think like my mom she cared a lot but found it hard to express it in ways that weren't like. providing. keeping things shipshape#not very demonstrative and pretty intimidating to a kid#but i still do remember a few good things about her; note to self to tell T those stories#looking at cardinals on the deck. the roofing project. her painting my sister's nails. watching lion king and the old cinderella with us#good moments#it makes me think of the way mom used to really put care into giving us thoughtful gifts but she'd hardly ever play with them with us#i think it would have gone a long way with me at that age if she'd been willing to take the initiative rather than wait to be invited#i always thought that she knew so much and what she could do was so cool; i just never felt comfortable asking#bc she didn't seem like you could just ask her to come have fun#meanwhile my dad Knew a lot less stuff and had fewer cool hobbies but he was goofy and fun and willing to get on the floor#i think i understand why they were the way they were but still im frustrated#bc like t was saying today. now that mom's retired she's actually fun?? she's not stressed and angry all the time and she has time for us?#or at least for my sister anyway... but i will agree; she seems a lot happier#and i wish she'd been able to be happier when we were younger#neither me nor my sister came out of that with anything close to secure attachment

Just a little clarification. Because a lot of 'comprehensible input' study materials and advice-giving methods market themselves as 'learning a language like a child'
Comprehensible Input Lessons specifically are lessons designed to be VERY understandable using pictures and gestures, so that no translations are needed for the student to understand what is being taught. These lessons ARE in regular classrooms, are in many immersion class programs, are in many language tutoring centers, and they're online made by lots of tutors and teachers. They're just a type of lesson. They don't require you to specifically do anything 'like a child.' They only require the student to do something besides follow the lesson itself, if the specific teacher or program is telling you X is a requirement! Anyone can use these kinds of lessons. Any teacher can utilize these lessons, if they're trying to make their lessons as understandable to students as possible - these lessons are useful when students don't speak the same native language so every student can understand the material, and for supplementing lessons that use translations (by giving the students VISUAL context along with translations). TPRS Teaching Proficency through Reading and Storytelling is one example of this type of lesson, often TPRS uses some amount of translations and a lot of visual context.
Comprehensible input GENERALLY is just... material you can comprehend. That's it. Material you can generally understand the meaning of. Comprehensible input would be any graded reader or textbook dialogue that you as a student can understand the meaning of by reading, any conversation you have in the target language you can understand, any show you can understand, any lesson the teacher does IN the target language that you can understand. As you learn more of the target language, obviously the amount of input that is comprehensible (that you understand) increases. That's it. That's all comprehensible input is. It's a very broad category. It does NOT require you to think or do things in a certain way to be 'comprehensible input,' it's just engaging in some situation or engaging with some material you understand. Comprehensible input lessons specifically are a TYPE of comprehensible input, designed by teachers and tutors to be extremely understandable to learners of various levels. Similar to how graded readers are made to be VERY understandable to the learners at the level the graded reader is designed for. But comprehensible input lessons and graded readers are NOT the only kind of comprehensible input. So are cartoons you understand, fanfictions you read and understand, people talking to you where they gesture and you understand what they're trying to convey, people who talk and don't gesture but you still understand because you know enough things to understand them, etc.
Comprehensible Input Learning Programs - these are the only things that MAY tell you to 'learn like a child.' It depends on the learning program, and the teacher's instructions. These Learning Programs typically are made up of teachers providing a lot of Comprehensible Input Lessons, directions on how they want the student to study/think/engage with the lessons provided, and directions to engage with other experiences the student understands in the target language (which will increase as the student learns more).
If you are using Dreaming Spanish and following Pablo's directions completely, then you'll study the Comprehensible Input Lessons on his website in the way he recommends. So when he says no translating in your head, no reading about translations and explanations, you follow his directions. It's his teaching program, and if he says not to do those things, then you follow his directions if you've chosen to follow the teaching program as directed. The rules Pablo gives are not required to learn from the material, they are the requirements to follow his teaching program as directed and get the results he's expecting the program to provide students. He can't guarantee students will get the same results if they vary from his directions. There are many people who use the Comprehensible Input Lessons posted on dreamingspanish.com without following Pablo's directions. That's also fine. The directions to learn a certain way, to do certain things, are not required to 'use' comprehensible input... everything you understand, is comprehensible input. You can engage with it however you like, and you will learn from the experience, because you understand the experience.
ALG is another example of a comprehensible input learning program: comprehensible input learning programs generally are structured with teachers providing Comprehensible Input Lessons specifically, encouraging students to seek out other comprehensible input experiences - experiences the student understands in the target language (which will become easier as the student understands more), and for students to follow the program's directions.
Alice Ayel's Lessons for French also follow this structure: if you pay for her website's lessons, she gives directions on how she wants students to engage with the Comprehensible Input Lessons, and the student is expected to do the Comprehensible Input Lessons.
If you are not specifically deciding to follow a Learning Program, you don't have to avoid thinking about the target language, avoid translations, or avoid grammar explanations. Those are just directions some Learning Programs give students, and you can choose to follow if you're doing that Learning Program and want to follow the teacher's directions.
You can also just use Comprehensible Input Lessons as a tool, like any other lessons or resources. And comprehensible input in general is just... experiences and materials you understand. You can engage with comprehensible input however you want, you will eventually run into comprehensible input (stuff you understand) as you learn more and understand more. Textbooks include comprehensible input - assuming you are studying the material previously presented. Graded Readers are comprehensible input - assuming you're the language level the graded reader is recommended for. Classes often have comprehensible input moments - moments the teacher says stuff you understand, because it's stuff you've learned. Some teachers do Comprehensible Input Lessons specifically - using minimal translations and a lot of gestures and pictures. Some teachers do TPRS. Some teachers eventually ask you to read novels, or watch shows, in the target language, and as you understand novels and shows those count as comprehensible input. Every conversation you participate in the target language and understand, is comprehensible input.

honest to god I really enjoy academics (in university, not fucking k-12), but i despise the structure of the system. since it's the goddamn united states of america the protestant view of "soul crushing work is gooder because suffering means youre dedicated to GOD" bleeds into every aspect of society. I'm especially annoyed with how seriously some professors take the 1 credit = 4 hours of work per week, meaning the work from all courses add up to 48 hours per week which is fucking absurd to me. so that means some professors litter you with pointless busywork that adds nothing of value, especially if it's just reiterating material that's already been touched upon other course materials
