This semester I have analyzed genres that someone would find in the sales world. More specifically, I looked at a manual, a couple spread sheets, and finally an example conversation between a sales rep and a client. I chose these genres because I figured that I would run into these types of documents the most in my future. I learned how to organize my papers best for my readers to understand. My favorite genre to research was probably the example conversations between a sales rep and a doctor. I found these really informative and helpful to seeing what it is like to be a pharmaceutical representative on a daily basis. I learned how important the relationship between you and your client is, and how important it is to have a strong pitch.
This semester we focused on writing journals, field guides, and genre analyzations. This semester I really like the journals. They are very casual and laid back. I liked the casual talk about the prompts. The journals definitely helped me better understand the sections we were assigned to read. The field guide we wrote was more formal because we were aiming to inform the reader about the career that you are going into. The genre analysis was probably the most formal document I wrote for this sequence. I explained the genres one may encounter in the career path I chose to focus on. I used a fairly high register to set the stage for the readers. In this job you would ideally be using a somewhat formal language to communicate with a client. You need that personal relationship, but the respect is still very important. This genre has a variation in register, but as a whole, the talk should be formal.

Writing as a process is important to how you craft your paper. Knowing how to plan out what you want to argue to your audience is key to how well others receive the information you’re giving them. Collaborating with peers to see what is working and what is not working for your paper. Forming your argument into different genres may also show you a side to the information that you had yet to consider. Editing and revising and so on is important to crafting the best work for your audience. Writing is a tedious process but in the overall scheme of things this process is very rewarding.
The SWA assignments are extremely helpful in making your next assignment better and better than the best. In the first assignment we begin to touch on the subject, and then as the assignments become more complicated and detailed, we learn more and add more useful information into our final papers. In the MWA I used different documents rather than using the documents that I discussed in my MWA2. I think that I like to challenge myself by the time we get to the final assignment just to test how much I have actually learned from the sequence.
I believe that the easiest part of this process for me is drafting. I like to get my ideas out on the page. It usually starts out as a bit disorganized, but I can quickly proofread to group my information into chunks. I think the most difficult point of this process is probably revising it for the last and final draft. Making the last and final touches on a paper are always a bit tough for me. I never know when a paper is truly fine-tuned. Every paper has room for improvement always. I never know when is good enough. I find myself feeling uneasy about the papers I turn in because I don’t know if it is going to get me the ideal grade that I am looking for. In the overall peer review process, I found that my professors input on my paper was the most helpful. I do like getting peer feedback but sometimes I like the professors just to tell me up front what I need to do for that A grade. I like things straight to the point, and this is why I find myself asking my professor what needs to be done to my paper to make it better. This process is what has helped me most to become the writer I am now.

A Little Bit About Me :)
Hi! I’m Emme Cyboron. I am a freshman, soon to be sophomore, at UNM. I am majoring in business with a concentration in marketing. In the future I would love to be a marketing executive. I feel that I have learned a lot about myself, as a person and a writer, in my first year of college. I really enjoy writing creatively. Going into the semester I was worried that I would be incapable of writing in a more professional setting. I struggled at first but with encouragement from my great professor I was able to flourish in English 1120. I was unsure of my writing abilities, but now I am a confident writer. I have more fun writing in all kinds of genres and registers than I could have ever imagined. At the start of the semester I was very nervous and unsure of my writing abilities. My peers and professor changed that for me almost instantaneously. Everyone had such great feedback and I was able to reassure myself on multiple occasions. I feel stronger as a writer. In English 1120 I have learned to write more professionally and with confidence. It is really interesting to me how things changed so quickly. It was so sudden. I never expected that my Spring 2020 semester would end this way. It is all very very odd. I miss school. Online school is not my thing and I am very bored all the time. I really hope things go back to normal soon. It is odd to think that we are living through something kids in the next generations will read about in history books. I am thankful for the time I did have at UNM this semester. I learned a lot, and I had fun doing it. I hope I continue to grow through my remaining years in college.

Writing as a social act is using your peers to improve your writing. Using peer review and feedback techniques help us grow as writers. I think that asking others for input on your writing is crucial to making your argument stronger. Before English 1120 I did not understand what it meant when someone would say that writing is a social act. By the end of the semester however I did learn that it is just as important as all the other SLO’s. Getting feedback from peers or anyone else is beneficial to your growth as a writer.
Understanding the genres in my ideal career field is somewhat important. I am not looking at the genres of my documents in my future day to day job. I will be focused more on the sales and statistics of my own salary. I think that knowing the genres and informing others of what kinds of documents will be seen on the job. My discourse community would show the audience the importance of the documents being seen regularly. Understanding the hierarchy of the career field is also just as important. The corporate officers are very important and that is a group of people you do not want to get in trouble with. Then down the line comes the salesman. Your job as a salesman is to make the most sales to climb up in the company hierarchy. The more successful you are the more respect and bonuses you will gain at your job.
Writing socially is a part of sharing your knowledge and opinions with others in your community. I think that we all can learn from each other and other’s experiences. Interacting with other’s research and conclusions is important to how you can excel in your career path.

I would say that I had a good grammar refresher this sequence. We talked a lot about MLA format and citing our sources in our papers. I think this knowledge will be helpful carrying into the next assignments as well. I would say that I learned how to transition from topic to topic better in my papers. Once I organized my thoughts, I was able to transition fairly easily from topic to topic.
From SWA1 to MWA1 I saw that I was better at organizing things. By the time we finished our last assignment I was able to make my work easier to read. In the first assignments I am a bit all over the place and I can be a bit hard to understand. My mind is always bouncing from topic to topic on a day to day basis, so when I write sometimes that shows through. I am now able to get all of my ideas onto the page and then sort them accordingly. I have struggled with organization in the past, but I am seeing improvement in myself which is exciting. I think the assignment I am most proud of is my SWA2. I was very thorough and organized in this assignment. I just felt that the genre and format of the assignment really helped me do my best work. I think drafting my papers and working with my peers and professors will help me excel further this semester. I really enjoy getting the feedback and suggestions from others and it is what will ultimately make me a better writer.

I believe that including different dialects in works can be very important. However, I did not come across that in my writings. The genres I explored were business documents and they generally had a high register. In my SWA #1 I analyzed a short story I am very fond of. That did not have a very noticeable register; it was a story. I honestly did not really know what I was doing with this assignment. This is also where I felt unsure of myself. In SWA #2 I began understanding what the importance of register meant to a piece. I wrote up a genre guide for some documents I may come across in my future career. The documents I looked at had a high register. I was beginning to understand the use of register and how authors utilize this resource. I felt very confident in my genre guide. I felt that I was informative and expressed the use of register in each article if necessary. In my MWA #1 I was able to explore a useful genre in my ideal career field, the art of conversation. Salesmen use this genre often but there was a bit of a trick to being successful at it. I feel that I was able to express that a proper register in speaking to clients depends on the relationship you have with them. Being able to read the situation is very helpful in choosing a register. In my MWA #1 I used a more relaxed register. However, in my MWA #2 I used a very high register. I wanted to sound very educated and strong in my writing. It was essential to use a high register in my research paper to let the readers know that, I was quoting credible sources, I was educated in my arguments, and they could trust me. Writing in this high register became second nature to me, but reading it was more challenging. I feel that I grew greatly in the use of this SLO throughout the semester.

Before this year I was not totally sure about my ability write in different genres. In my SWA #2 I was totally lost on creating microgenres and identifying them in other pieces. As I finished Sequence 1 I felt I had a much better grasp on my ability to write well within different genres. Being able to write in different genres had made me a more comfortable writer. Looking at my first SWA to my last I feel that I have grown to be more accustomed to switching up genres for assignments. In my research paper I feel that I had excelled in this more academic genre. I think I did an exceptional job researching and putting together my arguments. In my future I will find myself writing in a professional setting. Most likely I will be filling out spreadsheets, writing emails, orchestrating sales, and writing monthly sales reports. I feel that Sequence 1 gave me a good look at what that may be someday. I enjoyed researching genres I may come across in my SWA #2. I felt that I learned a ton about research and all the different ways to execute. I found that the library research clinic was extremely helpful. Learning to use databases that were tailored to my topics was essential in doing timely work. Thanks to these skills I have learned in this course I am able to feel excited about my future. I am confident in my writing versatility and I expect this to help me excel tremendously in my future.

For my argumentative research paper, I ended up becoming more passionate about my topic as I did the research. Once I had my thesis, I began doing the research and I found a ton of great articles and other various sources to back up what I had to say. I ended up changing up my thesis slightly as I did more in-depth research. As I found good evidence, I incorporated it into my paper. Addressing the counterargument in my paper was probably my greatest strength. I was able to address and then refute that argument with evidence. Looking into the counterargument made my argument stronger. Without acknowledging the counterargument, my argument would have been bland and unconvincing. I feel that this paper what a good way for me to branch out of my comfort zone genres. I feel I did a thorough job in my research paper and the SWAs that led up to it. I am extremely proud of my writing this semester. I feel I have grown tremendously as a writer. I was a bit nervous about this sequence in particular, because I used to dread research papers in high school. I learned a lot from Jennifer. I thought that it was great that she had us write about our hopeful future jobs. It made me even more passionate and motivated to write my research paper. The most useful thing I learned is how to craft a counterargument and where to properly place it in an essay. As a young adult mastering these writing skills is useful no matter the profession. Someday I hope to impress my future employer with my new writing abilities. SLO G is something that I see helping me greatly in my future career.

I used an abundance of outside ideas in my second MWA. I found great sources that educated and qualified individuals had written on marketing. When I incorporated quotes from those sources; I made sure to cite their work. It is so important to give the original authors credit for their ideas and evidence. I found some great articles on research and studies done and I made sure to give credit to those authors even if I was just paraphrasing something they had said. I cited anything that I did not know already, and that was basically everything. I learned a lot from the research that I did for my paper! In high school we focused heavily on MLA format and how to properly cite sources. I always struggled with it, however this semester it just clicked with me. I got a better handle on MLA formatting and citing sources. I think that talking about it so much in class and doing examples certainly helped me get a better hold on the concept. I used evidence from a study I found that ended up supporting my counterargument more than my argument. It made me reconsider my argument and how I could make my side of the argument look strongest. Seeing other’s opinions on my topic educated me further and it was critical to my paper being successful. Seeing qualified individual’s articles and studies I was able to support my claims with confidence.

For my research paper finding recent sources was effortless. Social media marketing is always changing and improving companies. I basically just googled my topic and I had to sift through a couple pages to find articles that were going to be useful to my argument. However, finding sources on online encyclopedias was a tad challenging. The research clinic I went to in Zimmerman was highly beneficial. The librarians showed me how to use online encyclopedias and how I could use an advance search to get more refined results. I was familiar with JSTOR, and I got one of my sources from here. However, UNM has lots of online options as well and using a business-oriented encyclopedia was extremely useful for my paper! Most of my sources are from marketing cites run by credible authors. I tried to steer my search away from blogs or Wikipedia and things that can be edited by others that view the sites. I did my best to find unbiased sources but that was tough. The sources I ended up using in my paper were the ones I felt most confident about. Most of the secondary sources I viewed were analyses of studies done. A lot of the secondary sources I found on my topic were generally bias and I did my best to stay away from bias sources. Pulling information from my online print sources was a bit tedious. I went through and read the section that was most useful multiple times to decide what was best for my claims. I ended up using a variety of sources. I used print, primary, secondary, and lots of articles that were open to the public. I think that my variety of sources helped me strengthen my argument. Using different media made my claims supported more heavily. I think using an array of sources is the best way to show the reader that you did thorough research.
