A Little Bit About Me :)
Hi! I’m Emme Cyboron. I am a freshman, soon to be sophomore, at UNM. I am majoring in business with a concentration in marketing. In the future I would love to be a marketing executive. I feel that I have learned a lot about myself, as a person and a writer, in my first year of college. I really enjoy writing creatively. Going into the semester I was worried that I would be incapable of writing in a more professional setting. I struggled at first but with encouragement from my great professor I was able to flourish in English 1120. I was unsure of my writing abilities, but now I am a confident writer. I have more fun writing in all kinds of genres and registers than I could have ever imagined. At the start of the semester I was very nervous and unsure of my writing abilities. My peers and professor changed that for me almost instantaneously. Everyone had such great feedback and I was able to reassure myself on multiple occasions. I feel stronger as a writer. In English 1120 I have learned to write more professionally and with confidence. It is really interesting to me how things changed so quickly. It was so sudden. I never expected that my Spring 2020 semester would end this way. It is all very very odd. I miss school. Online school is not my thing and I am very bored all the time. I really hope things go back to normal soon. It is odd to think that we are living through something kids in the next generations will read about in history books. I am thankful for the time I did have at UNM this semester. I learned a lot, and I had fun doing it. I hope I continue to grow through my remaining years in college.

This semester I have analyzed genres that someone would find in the sales world. More specifically, I looked at a manual, a couple spread sheets, and finally an example conversation between a sales rep and a client. I chose these genres because I figured that I would run into these types of documents the most in my future. I learned how to organize my papers best for my readers to understand. My favorite genre to research was probably the example conversations between a sales rep and a doctor. I found these really informative and helpful to seeing what it is like to be a pharmaceutical representative on a daily basis. I learned how important the relationship between you and your client is, and how important it is to have a strong pitch.
This semester we focused on writing journals, field guides, and genre analyzations. This semester I really like the journals. They are very casual and laid back. I liked the casual talk about the prompts. The journals definitely helped me better understand the sections we were assigned to read. The field guide we wrote was more formal because we were aiming to inform the reader about the career that you are going into. The genre analysis was probably the most formal document I wrote for this sequence. I explained the genres one may encounter in the career path I chose to focus on. I used a fairly high register to set the stage for the readers. In this job you would ideally be using a somewhat formal language to communicate with a client. You need that personal relationship, but the respect is still very important. This genre has a variation in register, but as a whole, the talk should be formal.

Writing as a social act is using your peers to improve your writing. Using peer review and feedback techniques help us grow as writers. I think that asking others for input on your writing is crucial to making your argument stronger. Before English 1120 I did not understand what it meant when someone would say that writing is a social act. By the end of the semester however I did learn that it is just as important as all the other SLO’s. Getting feedback from peers or anyone else is beneficial to your growth as a writer.
Understanding the genres in my ideal career field is somewhat important. I am not looking at the genres of my documents in my future day to day job. I will be focused more on the sales and statistics of my own salary. I think that knowing the genres and informing others of what kinds of documents will be seen on the job. My discourse community would show the audience the importance of the documents being seen regularly. Understanding the hierarchy of the career field is also just as important. The corporate officers are very important and that is a group of people you do not want to get in trouble with. Then down the line comes the salesman. Your job as a salesman is to make the most sales to climb up in the company hierarchy. The more successful you are the more respect and bonuses you will gain at your job.
Writing socially is a part of sharing your knowledge and opinions with others in your community. I think that we all can learn from each other and other’s experiences. Interacting with other’s research and conclusions is important to how you can excel in your career path.

Writing as a process is important to how you craft your paper. Knowing how to plan out what you want to argue to your audience is key to how well others receive the information you’re giving them. Collaborating with peers to see what is working and what is not working for your paper. Forming your argument into different genres may also show you a side to the information that you had yet to consider. Editing and revising and so on is important to crafting the best work for your audience. Writing is a tedious process but in the overall scheme of things this process is very rewarding.
The SWA assignments are extremely helpful in making your next assignment better and better than the best. In the first assignment we begin to touch on the subject, and then as the assignments become more complicated and detailed, we learn more and add more useful information into our final papers. In the MWA I used different documents rather than using the documents that I discussed in my MWA2. I think that I like to challenge myself by the time we get to the final assignment just to test how much I have actually learned from the sequence.
I believe that the easiest part of this process for me is drafting. I like to get my ideas out on the page. It usually starts out as a bit disorganized, but I can quickly proofread to group my information into chunks. I think the most difficult point of this process is probably revising it for the last and final draft. Making the last and final touches on a paper are always a bit tough for me. I never know when a paper is truly fine-tuned. Every paper has room for improvement always. I never know when is good enough. I find myself feeling uneasy about the papers I turn in because I don’t know if it is going to get me the ideal grade that I am looking for. In the overall peer review process, I found that my professors input on my paper was the most helpful. I do like getting peer feedback but sometimes I like the professors just to tell me up front what I need to do for that A grade. I like things straight to the point, and this is why I find myself asking my professor what needs to be done to my paper to make it better. This process is what has helped me most to become the writer I am now.

I would say that I had a good grammar refresher this sequence. We talked a lot about MLA format and citing our sources in our papers. I think this knowledge will be helpful carrying into the next assignments as well. I would say that I learned how to transition from topic to topic better in my papers. Once I organized my thoughts, I was able to transition fairly easily from topic to topic.
From SWA1 to MWA1 I saw that I was better at organizing things. By the time we finished our last assignment I was able to make my work easier to read. In the first assignments I am a bit all over the place and I can be a bit hard to understand. My mind is always bouncing from topic to topic on a day to day basis, so when I write sometimes that shows through. I am now able to get all of my ideas onto the page and then sort them accordingly. I have struggled with organization in the past, but I am seeing improvement in myself which is exciting. I think the assignment I am most proud of is my SWA2. I was very thorough and organized in this assignment. I just felt that the genre and format of the assignment really helped me do my best work. I think drafting my papers and working with my peers and professors will help me excel further this semester. I really enjoy getting the feedback and suggestions from others and it is what will ultimately make me a better writer.
