Savina Yannatou, Primavera en Salonico and Lamia Bedioui: Watersong

Considering water as balm and curse, life and storm: the fabulous Greek singer and collaborators transport us across centuries and countries

Savina Yannatou is a fabulous Greek singer whose work over the last five decades hasn’t stood still. Her CV includes interpretations of early music, throat singing, composing for video art and improvisations with Can’s Damo Suzuki. Her new album with Greek jazz ensemble and long-term collaborators Primavera en Salonica and Tunisian singer Lamia Bedioui is a global tour of traditional songs about water: how it can be balm and curse, source of life and storm.

Watersong begins beautifully, in Greece, with The Song of Klidonas. Singing of a mid-summer ritual in which girls place charms in a pot of clean water to be left outside bathed in starlight, Yannatou dusts the beautiful melody with melancholy. Then the mood shifts. Naanaa Algenina (Garden Mint)/Ivana mixes folk songs from Aswan in Egypt and North Macedonia into a wild, wayward concoction: Yannatou and Bedioui’s opening stunning harmonies twist into a middle section in which Yannatou gasps and ululates around stuttering instruments. Elsewhere, she gives Cypriot traditional song Ai Giorkis (St George) a sultry edge and Spanish ballad A los Baños del Amor (At the Baths of Love) a hymnal glow.

The album jumps across the centuries, from Ireland to Iraq, Corsica to Calabria, but it is filled with intensely modern moments. Michalis Siganidis’s double bass in Greek carol Kalanta of the Theophany has motorik-like propulsion. The 10th-century Arabic poem Mawal (To the Mourning Dove I Said) comes across as an avant garde contemporary prayer, setting a tangle of percussion against Yannatou and Bedioui’s spoken-word delivery, full of contrapuntal whispers and wails.

Traditional instruments such as Kostas Vomvolos’ qanun (an Arabic zither) and Harris Lambrakis’s ney (a Persian flute) also add drama and dreaminess. This album sets traditional music flowing and crashing in many unexpected, wonderful directions.

La festa dell'uovo

Anche la Pasqua, come il Natale, era inizialmente una festa soprattutto religiosa, divenuta col tempo un’importante festa dedicata ai bambini. Come mostrano il suo nome in molte lingue e i riti a essa connessi, la Pasqua possiede profondi significati simbolici in relazione alla nascita, alla rinascita e alla fertilità. I termini tedesco e inglese derivano dal nome della divinità germanica Ostara, dea della primavera e della fecondità. Suo contrassegno era l’uovo e suo messaggero la lepre; fu questa l’origine dell’uovo di Pasqua e della Lepre di Pasqua. L’uovo occupa un posto di rilievo nei miti della creazione di tutto il mondo a significare la nascita e già a partire dal IV secolo ne è attestato il collegamento con le cerimonie pasquali. Nel XII secolo la chiesa cattolica diede la sua legittimazione a tale collegamento introducendo la Benedictio Ovarum (*), la benedizione delle uova, e autorizzandone un uso particolare nelle festività pasquali. Da allora l’uovo ha sempre occupato un posto centrale nella celebrazione della Pasqua, dalla tradizionale corsa delle uova, alla caccia alle uova da parte dei bambini, all’uso di regalare uova riccamente decorate. La lepre, come poi il coniglio, si prestava naturalmente a simboleggiare la fertilità, per la sua nota prolificità. Il primo riferimento in lingua tedesca alla lepre in rapporto all’uovo pasquale risale al 1572, quando peraltro l’usanza era da lungo tempo affermata.

Ensemble Stars!! MV Tournament

I got my copy of Ensemble Stars!! Official Works vol. 2! Here's the case, I tried to show it has texture and the characters are embossed. It's very nice.

The book has events and scouts from Flowers of Wasteland/Neverland to Prison Breakers/Veiled Fragrance and FS1s from Shinobu to Sora. And it has casual autumn-winter outfits! And some extra, like the April Fool's Gundam Stars mechas.

Here's Primavera outfit and without jacket too! I wish we had illustrations of fine in their outfits without the jackets, for example in the backstage before or after a concert. I think they'd look so good. ^^

Some outfits have only a few notes but then there's Tsumugi's Burning Azaleas outfit hahaha. I pity the people who worked on his 3D model for this.

And the casual outfits! These are interesting because you don't always see them in full, except for the chibis. For example, Wataru's shoes are ankle boots! There are actually two cards you can see his feet in this outfit but he's indoors in both of them so he's not wearing the shoes.
