Some thoughts on Godmars vs VLD
I finally have time to binge-rewatch Six God Combination Godmars, and even thought it’s not the best combining mecha anime, it’s still one of my favorites and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the genre and wants to see early iterations of concepts that are found in later combining mecha anime (some of which show up in Golion and thus inform Voltron).
Godmars is streaming on Crunchyroll, and I really hope we can get a home video release.
One of the main reasons that I like Godmars so much, is how the story handles the reveal of Takeru’s (Mars) alien heritage to his teammates.
The reveal and aftermath unfolds across three episodes, and—despite the narrative restrictions of the monster-of-the-week format—the writers manage to pack in more emotion and reaction than what we saw out of VLD’s handling of Keith’s reveal as half-Galra.
There is also a build-up in the first 5 episodes that sets up the Crusher team’s distrust in Takeru over his newfound psychic abilities. So when they find out the truth, they’re not easily won over, and Takeru becomes emotionally isolated and vulnerable.
It certainly helps that the reveal comes with a side of “psychic deadman switch.”
If Takeru dies, the bomb that is built into his robot, Gaia, will explode, destroying Earth with it. Takeru can also command the bomb to explode through his psychic connection to Gaia.
“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. – Gaia, probably.
If you like your psychic alien super robot protagonists with a healthy dose of angst, then Godmars delivers.
“Thanks dad(?)”
Emperor Zul might just be more nasty than Zarkon and Haggar put together.
You gotta be seriously damn evil to send your infant son (or is he?) with a robot-that-doubles-as-a-planet-destroying-bomb to another world to destroy it either as an active combatant, or as a casualty: “It’s a win either way” right?
Zul doesn’t mess around, from the start he’s sending assassins to kill off Takeru so that Gaia’s bomb will explode. Takeru’s adoptive father is killed in the process.
In Godmars, it’s the adoptive father that is the parent who gets fridged.
Then there’s Marg, who would win the galactic award for Softest Cinnamon Roll from an Evil Alien Empire.
Poor guy’s fate is worse than VLD Lotor’s. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if Honerva/Haggar does something similar to Lotor (if he still “lives”) as to what Zul does to Marg for his actions.
Did I mention these aliens were psychic?
Like, really, really, psychic. Full ESP.
As for the mecha fights...
In the “super robot” department, the fight sequences with the Crusher team combining jet fighters have more action than those with Godmars itself.
When the six robots combine, the battle is over quickly via some combination of alien psychic energy (which all of the robots can project individually as well as when combined) and a super robot punch or sword swing. The paucity of giant robot fights in VLD saves budget for when it really counts, so there’s that. I miss my mecha action, but I’d rather there be less of it but of higher quality, than the monster-of-the-week variety if there isn’t budget/time to make those fights have more motion to them.
Despite the static-ness of the robot fights, I rate Godmars ‘high’ on aesthetics, and the aesthetics hold up well over 30 years later.
I’m not saying that Godmars started the “Purple and Geometric Shapes are the Mood Board of Evil” but...it certainly predates/coincides a lot of mecha anime featuring the same that came after it (looking at you Dairugger XV and Golion).
Like VLD, Godmars has its share of aesthetically pleasing space scenes too.
Last one: I’ll admit to having a weakness for flight suits with high structured collars and bell-bottoms. VLD really missed an opportunity here for a retro-styled parody/comedy episode.
Go on, guess their archetypes.

rules: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 favorite works you’ve created this year (fics, art, edits, etc!) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you’ve brought into the world in 2017. tag as many writers/artists/etc as you want (fan or original!) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works.
KJhKJHDKFJSDH i was tagged by @sugaryshiro!!! GODDAMNIT
okay so the bulk of what i did in 2017 was uhhhhh PROJECTS!!!
ONE: the shalasquad
jakdhsfkjhasdfjkh ‘ORI why the fuck are you including a group chat??’ BECAUSE I MADE IT OKAY? making the shalasquad back in like damn august?? or september,, either way it was one of the best decisions i have EVER made. i made so many new friends through that group and there’ve been so many times when i’ve laughed so hard with these kids it hurt. they mean the world to me and im so honored for them to consider me their friend <3 (i was gonna list everyone but like... there’s so many)
(psst u can msg me for the link to our discord!!)
TWO: @positivevoltron
aaaagh... the positive vld network, the project that means the world to me. i love this project immensely because it’s really trying to celebrate and cultivate a positive atmosphere and all the people who are working with me are just... the BEST people you will ever meet...
THREE: MY EVENTS!!
i think hosting events is one of the FUNNEST things a person can do!! it’s a lot of organization (which i suck at) and dedication (i suck at that too) but the results are SO cool!! i did 2 events in 2017, @onceuponapaladin and @voltronlgbtmonth!! both were so much fun and i plan to do more in 2018 <3 (might have some in the wings!!) my goal is to one day head a charity zine actually so... !!
FOUR: WIP FIC!!!
kJAKDKJSDH technically four isnt even published (SORRY!! MAYBE SOON??) but it’s a collab with @sugaryshiro! it honestly means the WORLD to me and the plot is... MMM its good. YOU WOULDNT THINK IT WOULD BE CONSIDERING THE CONTENT BUT IT IS SO GOOD.
FIVE: Brave New World
hhhh FUCK !! every time i think of brave new world i am simultaneously filled with regret and pride. that fic is 160k+, unfinished, a fucking train wreck. its a year old and i really WANT to finish it one day... but everytime i try i just... i started that fic when i had just started writing, so it’s... not good. there are some passages i really like in it, and some plot points i jsut adore. plus imagene and lucivida? i’ll always be proud of them, but at the same time i cant help but feel that the fic is... bad. im always surprised when someone comes into my inbox wanting to know more about the story or the characters or if im updating bc tbh ive been avoiding it. my mind keeps pulling me back to it more and more but i just... i look at it and i cant. im going to try, i swear but for now the best i can do is just think about it. im still very proud of it since i spent so much time on it. i worked so hard to write that and even if its not good my writing progresses i think. ive improved a lot. one day i will finish it... and then immediately redo it and give it a much better life. i still love it, more than i should.
honorable mentions: secret project number 2, an ocean of you, and hocus pocus!
im tagging @edelwary, @the-universalfiction @kcgane @rigb0ner and @dr-chalk LUNA ESP YOU HAVE TO DO THIS!!!!

Thanks for explaining your Dad Kogane theory! I honestly hadn't thought much on how he'd be cautious and distrusting of government organizations. Him being at the GG also gives the possibility that he was able to keep watch on Keith (via esp?), and maybe sensed when Keith left Earth. And with the GG having access to galra tech to upgrade their own tech it leaves the possibility for Dad Kogane to piggyback on those projects -making me wonder if HE could be that floating stranger in the trailer.
The thing about Dad Kogane is he’s got so much more going on than it feels like we’ve seen at this point. If he was aware of Keith, it raises the question of why he’d keep his distance- and if he wasn’t, then, what could’ve created a blind spot like that in his awareness.
And if they were close to each other... what made him disappear from Keith’s sense, if it can point him that strongly towards Shiro. Is it just that by the time of the Garrison Keith was such a defeatist about ever seeing his father again that he just wasn’t looking?
Honestly, my two cents for floating stranger, unless it’s someone we haven’t seen before (people have pointed toward Commander Hawkins or Ryou Shirogane, the latter admittedly more likely than the former since Hawkins is Vehicle Voltron and the VLD folks haven’t been all that fond of them) are Dad Kogane or Colleen Holt.
Heck, it could be multiple people, considering the Garrison usually operates in three-man missions. Just because we see only one floating figure doesn’t mean there aren’t two more.

anyway vld s3 thoughts (spoilers obvs):
i’m really glad with how the paladin changes were made in the first few eps! thought it was cool that lance was chosen for red because he was fit to be a “right-hand man.” still wanna know what the attributes of blue are tho.
I LOVED ALLURA IN A LION and i’m glad she actually struggled with it. i’m glad we didn’t get the hypothetical s3 some ppl wanted with her effortlessly piloting black lmao that would have been a drag to watch. and likewise i’m glad keith struggled in black and they struggled as a team.
that being said uh the permanent lion change feels really weird now that they got shiro back so soon! i expected things to happen this way, but over the long term and when they had spent more time to adjust to their lions. if shiro had been away longer there would be more of a feeling that the team/lions had “moved on” but instead it’s just arbitrarily like. nope they’ve swapped paladins now.
i feel lotor’s generals are meant to parallel each of the paladins? at least lotor = keith (both are leaders stepping up into a new position) and invisible lizard woman = pidge (invisibility). or maybe i’m overthinking it lol.
tbh i think weblum galra is keith’s sister.
the alternate reality ep lmao. it was pretty cool esp with sven. it was a fun ep.
um i died when shiro didn’t catch up to voltron the first time.
everything with shiro is super sketchy. project kuron for starters. i’m feeling it’s a combination of cloning ala rei ayanami and memory implantation. the shiro we’re seeing being a new body with transferred memories would explain how he survived the end of s2 + why he saw a vision of himself + why his hair was so long.
also nobody answered shiro’s question “how much time has passed” liiiiiike if we’re being realistic about it shiro’s hair would take at least a year to grow to that length from what it was in s2. so either a year really has just passed like that OR there’s something else going on (OR staff just dropped the ball on this detail).
the symbolism of shiro returning to team voltron in a galra ship... interesting... yeah there’s definitely something going on with shiro.
the last ep was really cool and i’m p happy with the backstory. and i think they handled zarkon and haggar’s villain origin story well! they had good intentions but crossed a line and paid the consequences.
feels weird to not go into next season with a cliffhanger but tbh whatever is going on with shiro has me worried. that’s the real mood finishing a season of voltron tbh. wtf is going on with shiro and will he be okay.

Bilderberg Group meets just outside of DC as Deep State steps up war on Trump. Here’s the attendee list.
Photo: Public Domain
Top global political and business leaders of the Bilderberg Group will meet just miles from the White House this week, as “Deep State” actions to take down President Donald Trump grow more intense.
“The Bilderberg Group meeting in Chantilly, Virginia, will attract 131 elites on Thursday – from politicians and bankers to business titans and European royalty,” The Daily Mail reports. “They will discuss transatlantic relations, the future of the European Union and ‘a progress report’ on the Trump administration behind closed doors at the four-day meeting.”
It has not been revealed what the “progress report” on Trump means. Chantilly, in suburban D.C., is 30 miles from Washington.
Among those participating in this year’s Bilderberg Group meeting are Trump’s Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Trump’s National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, Trump advisers Peter Thiel and David Petraeus, U.S. Senator Lindsay Graham and Obama CIA Director John Brennan.
The meeting comes as leaks from within the U.S. government’s security community, intended to cripple President Trump, worsen.
“At least 180 federal employees have signed up for a workshop next weekend, where experts will offer advice on workers’ rights and how they can express civil disobedience,” former Clinton administration Labor Secretary Robert Reich gleefully notes.
“Federal workers are in regular consultation with recently departed Obama-era political appointees about what they can do to push back against the new president’s initiatives…,” Reich notes, “…The State Department has emerged as the nexus of opposition to Trump’s refugee policy, in part because it has an official dissent channel where Foreign Service employees can register opposition without fear of reprisals. The channel, formed in 1971, has been used to raise policy objections to the Vietnam War and other conflicts. Several hundred employees signed the dissent cable objecting to Trump’s refugee policy.”

AUTHORESS: MID-SEMESTER FIC UPDATE
okay, well, in short: life comes at you fast. i had about a million and one things happen to me, to the point where i dropped off tumblr and writing altogether. i’m not out of the woods quite yet (eyeing that orgo test nervously), but i have a better idea of what i’m going to be working on. bear with me, it’s going to be long.
FIC STATUS UPDATES
ZINES: haikyuu/ghibli and haikyuu life zine pieces have priority
PRINCE & PRINCE: in-progress; projected to end in eight months
LÝKONAUTIKA: fully planned, not started; this is the kiribaku pirate au sequel to p&p
KILLUGON COLLEGE/EXES AU: in planning stages; doesn’t have a name yet but it’s my current baby
KILLUGON META: started, @ heaven’s arena arc; this is literally what it sounds like. four years ago i started a killugon meta and i intend to pick it up where i left off and basically science the shit out of killugon
VIKTUURI GOD OF THE SEASONS AU: not even started; welp hina and i didn’t match up for yoi bb so someone might end up stealing this from me. we’ll see
I FOUND MYSELF A CHEERLEADER: HIATUS. UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. might pick it up after i watch vld s2 but who knows.
BLACK CAT, WHITE CAT: HIATUS. UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
ORIG FIC UPDATES
to make a long story fucking short, i’m torn. i have three ideas tugging at the reins, but one of them happens to be a low-research, already semi-planned, one-shot fanfic-turned-origfic that might be a good choice for a first novel. plus, lesbians. (it’s the viktuuri mer au).
P&P ZINE UPDATES
THE MOST IMPORTANT UPDATE: hina and i decided that may was a CRAZY pick for a deadline, so instead we will be opening pre-orders mid may through july with shipping in early september. this way, we gather more interest with tododeku season oncoming and neither of us are pressured. as a reminder...i’m purposefully spacing my prince & prince updates so that those who buy the zine WILL get the end months in advance of everyone else. it’s on purpose, lads. i need money to go see my girl <3
FIC SCHEDULE
this is ugly and rough lol but with luck i will ACTUALLY stick to this far more reasonable schedule
march
haikyuu ghibli zine
haikyuu life zine
p&p 15
p&p 16
killugon exes au planning
killugon meta planning
april
p&p 17
p&p 18
killugon exes au 1
killugon exes au 2 OR killugon meta (hunter exam + killua rescue)
viktuuri god of the seasons au might hop in here
may
p&p 19
p&p 20
p&p 21
killugon exes au (however many chapters my ass can write)
killugon meta (heaven’s arena + yorknew + greed island)
june-july-august
RYAN IS IN CALIFORNIA/NEW YORK/EUROPE FOR THREE MONTHS
p&p 22
killugon meta (chimera ant + chairman election + movies)
killugon exes au (however many chapters i can write)
september
lykonautika: START
origfic: START
killugon exes au: WRAP UP
AAAAAND THAT’S IT! all of this is subject to change at the drop of a hat, but i think this is a much more reasonable schedule to work with, esp since the killugon meta is literally just analysis and a break from having to use my thinker. lemme know if y’all have any questions! i will note: lykonautika marks probably the end of my fanfiction pursuits, at least as far as longfic goes. bnha and hxh fandom are my last hurrah.
