Countryside getaway
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yandere!mafia oc x reader
Summary: Silas has decided that the two of you should spend some time together, far away from his world, and you get to experience each other's real sides. No fear, no worries.
Warnings: mentions of crimes, mentions of murder, Silas dirty minded humor, but overall a softer oneshot
Word count: 2.3k
No one knows where you're going. Not even you. He has one hand on the steeringwheel, the other one holds your thigh.
He's wearing a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing the tattoos on his arms.
“Keep your eyes on the road, map reader, or we'll never get there”, Silas says, giving you a teasing look.
“You have a GPS”, you mutter and turn your head more comfortably against the pillow.
“My GPS does not have your voice.”
“I don't even know where we're going.”
“You don't have to. Just read the directions.”
“How much further do we have to go? We've been sitting here for hours …”
“I did not know I had brought a child with me. I've planned something romantic and you're just complaining.” He caresses your thigh with his thumb, chuckling. “One more hour, little thing. That good enough for you?”
You groan and hide your face in the pillow and he laughs. He's different like this, when he's not surrounded by his men. When he's not in that space. Here, in his sports car with just the two of you, he's different. Softer. Human. It loosens your walls too.
“So whiny”, he chuckles. “Slept bad?”
“Don't kid”, you mutter and make yourself comfortable against the pillow again.
“Maybe we both need this. I need a break and you need to be able to sleep. Can't do that at home, can you?”
No, you can't. Not when he comes home in the middle of the night, bloody and roughed up. At home, you wake to every little sound with your heart beating in your chest.
“You know”, Silas starts, “its important to do this. To get away. Especially in my industry. Otherwise you get consumed.”
“Will SIC be able to handle things?”
“He has no choice.”
“Are you really okay to go by yourself? You’re recognizable.”
“Darling, they can't do anything. Thankfully, the law is strict and as long as there is no evidence connecting me to something they can't actually take me. They can suspect me, but never catch me. I'm fine.” He smirks, glancing at you. “Why? You're worried?”
You give him a glare and turn your head out the window.
“I'll break that facade down, Y/N”, he smiles and leans back in his seat. “We have four days all to ourselves. And I'll make the most of it.” His smirk deepens. “With no one around … I can take you just however I want to, whenever. And if I'm not wrong, SIC said that the house is remote. You can be as loud as you want.”
You slap his shoulder.
“Ouch, I'm driving here”, he chuckles. “Mind your hands?”
“Focus on your driving then.”
“How can I when you're sitting right here?”
His free hand on your thigh squeezes ever so slightly. You stare at him, contemplating opening the door and throwing yourself out on the highway.
Tumblr media
The car has since long ago pulled in on a gravel road with no cars. Red flowers cover the fields around you, and for a second you're sure he has orchestrated it.
The house is smaller than Silas's house back in the city, less modern.
“Jump out, little thing”, he says as he unbuckles himself. “We're here.”
You stretch, legs wobbly from hours of sitting down. Silas unlocks the trunk and carries your bags inside. You stand in the middle of the gravel driveway, looking around and listening to the absolute lack of noise.
“Are you coming or what?” Silas asks from the front door. “Don't be slow or I'll carry you too. No gentler than these bags.”
You hurry after him. He smirks.
It's not hard finding the bedroom. A note lay in the bedding. Silas picks it up and scoffs at the familiar handwriting.
“Be nice to the bed, it's old, you break if you pay for it — SIC.”
“That son of a bitch”, Silas chuckles and turns to you, showing the note. “Seems like he read my mind.”
“You are kind of predictable”, you say.
Silas starts to walk towards you, backing you up against the nearest wall, wearing a soft smirk. “Me? Predictable? If I was predictable I wouldn't be a crime organization leader, my dumb little Y/N.”
You shrug. “I’m just saying.”
“Yeah, you’re good at saying things.” His hand sneaks up to your jaw. “How about you put your poor mouth to other uses for once? I know a pair of lips that would die to meet them.”
His cheesiness makes you scoff out a small smile, enough for him to close the distance. Ever since you’ve forced him to start using lip balm, his mouth is soft when it moves against yours. You sigh out and he swallows the sound in a greedy inhale. He holds you close, one hand on your back, the other on your jaw.
“Silas, you’ll bruise my lips”, you chuckle and try to turn your head away.
“Let me”, he breathes and directs you right back to his mouth.
And he does. He doesn’t half-ass things. He pulls back with proudness in his eyes.
“Let’s go shopping now.”
“Shopping?”
“We need food. Can’t just live off each other, unfortunately.”
He grabs your hand and leads you back out to the black sports car and you’re once again put on map reader duty to find the nearest grocery store. You can’t remember the last time you’ve actually grocery shopped with him. Normally, he sends out someone to buy things, and if he can’t trust anyone, he sends SIC. Just because Silas can’t be arrested, doesn’t mean he’s a hundred percent safe.
“Alright”, he mutters and grabs a cart. “Let’s pretend to be a normal couple.”
You can’t help but chuckle and he gives you a quick look.
“Let’s get this shitshow on the road, let’s go”, he mutters and nods at you to follow. “Don’t start running around or I’ll place you in the cart like a three year old. Okay, what do we need?”
“You need steak”, you joke.
“Damn right I do, but I get my steak from high quality butchers, I’ll get sick if I get it from a grocery store.”
“Aw, is your little tummy sensitive?” you ask, making sure it sounds more like “wittle”.
“Y/N, I’m warning you.”
His warning isn’t serious. Not now. Not like this. It only maks you smile.
“Are you going to be a brat all vacation just because you think I won’t do anything?” Silas asks behind you, pushing the cart into your back. “I did tell you we are remote, didn’t I?”
“Don't touch me or I'll scream.”
“Oh, you'll scream alright.”
“Silas!”
He chuckles, eyes softening. “I couldn't help it. You played that into my hands a bit too good to pass up on.”
“You’re so childish. Maybe you should tone it down on the threatening part if you don’t want more people staring at you. You don’t need to give them a reason to recognise you.”
Silas scoffs, but there’s a smile tugging at his lips. He enjoys this side of you way too much. He can only enjoy it in situations like this, far away from his world. When you're not scared of him.
“What's the budget?” you ask him.
“What?”
“The budget? You said to pretend to be a normal couple. Normal couples don't have your credit card.”
Silas groans audibly.
“I'm not compromising my money”, he says. “Stop messing around, grab what you want.”
You handle the actual shopping part while he pushes the cart behind you. People glance at him, if not for recognising him, then for his tattoos, but he pretends to be unaware.
“Little thing.”
“Hm?”
“Grab those.”
You follow where he nods. Chips. They fall into the cart. So do a lot of other things Silas usually doesn't buy.
“Might as well go for it now that SIC can't bully me”, he shrugs.
The cashier seems to recognise Silas, but she doesn't say anything. Silas is polite and wishes her a good day, as if he wasn't who she thought he was, before turning to you and grabbing the plastic bags.
Back at the house, he puts everything into the fridge and starts to cook right away.
“You’re not allowed to help”, he says and taps your forehead. “I want to actually eat tonight.”
“I can cook”, you insist.
“Yeah. Sure. How about you go and set the table while I handle the knives and the stove?”
“Fine.”
You do as you’re told, searching the drawers for cutlery and plates. He glances at you from time to time and can’t help but smile. Maybe this was what he wanted all along? To play family.
“It’s not often we get to do this”, he says as he plates the food. “Domestic things, I mean. Should enjoy it while we can. Oh, I saw a pool out in the backyard, by the way. I think we should try it out after dinner. I brought alcohol from back home.”
“Drinking and swimming doesn’t sound very safe.”
“Then you’ll just have to rescue me. They didn’t teach you life guard duty in swimming class?”
“Yes, but they didn’t prepare me to drag a man that weighs enough to crush a car.”
“So my workouts are working?” His grin widens as he takes a sip of his water. “Thank you, Y/N.”
Conversation die out for a moment, but Silas won’t let the night pass.
“So?” he says. “Don’t you have something to say?”
“What?” you ask.
“We don’t often get to just talk. Spew something out. Anything.”
You think for a moment. You usually have a lot of thoughts, but when put on the spot all seem to vanish.
“I like the food.”
Silas laughs. Actually laughs. You haven’t hard a genuine, carefree laugh from him in a long time. His back eyes curl into half moons.
“What?” you ask. “What is it?”
“You can say a million things and that’s what you choose to say?” he says. “That the food is good? I didn’t think I cooked that good food, enough for that to be the only thing you think of.”
“You put me on the spot, I just said the first thing that came to mind!”
“Try again, then.”
“Well … I … could really go for some alcohol right now.”
Silas smiles and rises from his chair. He disappears out of the room and returns with two bottles. One brandy, one red wine.
“Okay, your majesty”, he says. “Which fancies your taste buds?”
“Wine, probably. Fits better with dinner. You'll get brandy, I suspect?”
“You know me well.” He opens both bottles and pours. “I'm responsible for you, so it's my duty to make sure you don't get absolutely decked.”
“I thought I was the one that had to make sure you didn't fall face down in the pool?”
“Yeah, but let's be realistic for a second. I can hold my alcohol … you? Please.”
“Rude.”
“It is not rude if I'm stating facts, you just want to deny your incapable alcohol consumption.”
You take a sip of your wine and glare at him.
Silas jokingly suggests you both skinny dip. You shoot down the idea. He's a predator, taking your whole arm if you foolishly give him a finger. You'd like your body working for your getaway.
You're not sure what prompts him, the alcohol or his childishness, to jump into the pool like a bomb. Water splashes everywhere, both on your dry form and your towels, and he breaks the surface with a wide grin. He pushes his black hair back and swims over to the edge. His tattoos warp under the water.
“I’m wet now”, you say in a ‘matter of fact’ tone.
He looks up at you, squinting one eye full of water shut. “Yeah? Jump in then.”
You decide to get in slowly, but he has other plans. His hand grips your wrist and pulls you into the pool. You yelp, but never have a second to worry about inhaling water, because he holds you.
“So much drama for nothing”, Silas chuckles and wipes water out of your eyes. "I've got you.”
His tattooed arms half hug you, half cradle you as he sways back and forth in the water.
“Today”, you start, hesitant, “when we were at the grocery store, and people looked at you, and what you said before that … I started to think about something just now.”
“What?” he asks softly.
“What do I do if you're taken? Or killed?”
“That will never happen.”
“But what if it does?”
Silas sighs, arms around you tightening slightly.
“If I ever were to never come back home for whatever reasons”, he started slowly, “then SIC would follow the instructions I’ve told him.”
“What are those?”
“To get you far away from everything and everyone and keep you safe. You'd get a cute little house on the coast where you could live peacefully. You'd have my dog, and how many bodyguards it takes to replace me. SIC would be there too. He’d check up on you.”
“That sounds pretty lonely.”
“What? Are you planning to become the Great Gatsby after I disappear?”
He caresses your face with a wet hand.
“I have money put away for you in case anything happens”, he promises and rolls his eyes. “And I might have made a deal with the devil to get you new papers in case something happens.”
“Who?”
“The parasite I'm unfortunately to call brother.”
“Ares?”
“Don't say his name. Let's drop this now. I don't want to think about it. Especially since it won't happen.”
The entire wine bottle is empty once the two of you get out of the pool and head to bed. Silas wears a dark Grey hoodie and sweatpants, insisting you wear comfy clothes too. He thinks it is better for cuddles. You're wrapped in his hoodie covered arms, face pressed to his chest. You'll be damned if you try to get out of his arms any time before morning hours.
Somehow, you wish this little getaway could last forever. Life would be easier that way. Silas sighs out, unbeknownst thinking the exact same thing.

Agreed with nuance. I love these types of arcs sometimes but I think whether the redemption or self-sacrificial hero dying is bad writing or not really depends a lot on the context of the particular character. While most people seem to hate "redemption deaths" no matter the context, I hate them when the clear narrative motivation behind them is that the character doesn't deserve to live or it would be more complicated if they lived and they don't want to deal with that narrative, especially of the character themselves thinks they don't deserve to live and the narrative agrees with them by presenting their death as heartwarming and a fitting end/the best end a character could have after what they did (and unfortunately this is most of them in fiction). And especially if the thing they are atoning for really has nothing to do with any kind of selfishness or cowardice and in fact they were the "loyal to a cause above their own lives" type even pre-redemption. However I think it can work when their arc is about being selfish or cowardly, not being willing to give up even a little happiness or power or money for other people (and importantly in no way thinks they deserve death even when they atone), in which case giving up their very life can be the most impactful thing they could narratively do to show how they've changed. Or when they very much want to live but it's not the redemption that kills them but a "tragic hero" arc where the consequences of their flaws and mistakes do them in in a way that's presented as cathartic but not fundamentally deserved and they are able to have some realization of their wrongdoing/attempt to do good on the inevitable way out. Or if they are suicidal and think they deserve death but the narrative doesn't agree with them and their death when it happens is framed as tragically unnecessary rather than agreeing that it's a fitting ending. But I feel like this nuance gets lost with the "redemption deaths are bad no matter what" takes you usually see on this website.
And likewise with the self-sacrificial hero version, I sometimes love the trope of them living I'm a sucker for a good story about a suicidal character finding through hard struggle a reason to live, but if it's done wrong it can come across as protagonist-centric morality; if the character doesn't come off as suicidal but just doing the rational utilitarian thing in valuing a few or many others over their own life, but the narrative keeps criticizing them for that because don't they know they are the main character, so their life is more important than all of those NPCs? Especially if lots of other characters die including self-sacrifices in the story without being saved and it's only the main character who gets spared like this. While finding some contrived way to let said "NPCs" live anyway so they don't have to actually deal with the moral implications in implying the protagonist's life is more important than everyone else's.
Edit: so I think the best ways to pull off the "self-sacrificial hero learns to be less like that and lives" version is either to show the character's suicidal motivation distorts their judgments making them jump to martyrdom when they would objectively be able to do more good alive even if it's not as flashy and romantic (as opposed to self-sacrificing being the entirely rational choice every time), or show that the same attitude that leads to wanting to sacrifice themselves leaves to distortion of judgment in other ways (other kinds of self-effacing, or alternatively distancing themselves from others and having a sense of superiority as the self-sacrificing hero and devaluing others' lives for their goal as well, for example), or even both.
i love when characters don't get to die

Hi! If your requests are open, is there a chance you can write a oneshot about Mystery and Zoey from Kpop Demon Hunters? They're my favorite characters. I know all of the Saja Boys, except Jinu, are unfeeling demons, but I'm choosing to disregard what's canon. For the story, I was thinking of a scene where Mystery notices Zoey ogling Abby's abs. Seeing this makes Mystery jealous and self-conscious, and he asks himself, "What does he have that I don't have?" I would also lol if Mystery then starts barking at Abby.
Prompt : Mystery is a tad bit insecure
Author's Note : A tad bit on the longer side maybe?
Mystery didn’t intend on enjoying the idol life so much. Jinu had to spend most of his time persuading him out of the four other boy-band members. Mystery had enjoyed his home in hell to some degree. There was nothing to do really, and he wasn’t disturbed as long as Gwi-ma remained focused on someone else.
Of course there were still voices. The voices were always there. Well, they were. Jinu, the idiot, had the bright idea to debut their little boy band sooner than needed. That’s how he and the other 3 boys found themselves being shoved into a sketchy alleyway.
“Look good!” he whispered yelled orders at them. The boys groaned in unison, annoyance visible in their tones but they listened anyway.
Mystery was the first one turning the corner. He heard silent squeals coming from the other end but couldn’t see what was going on. He tilted his head slightly, hair flowing gracefully in the wind. The other boys seeing this copied his move, making it look synchronized and purposeful.
He took note of the three girls. Two of them seemed to be fangirling over Abby’s muscles, he didn’t understand why Jinu gave them such basic names, and the other girl looked so done with the situation.
The girl that stood in the center, short with little space buns, began to turn red. She was the first human he’d noticed and, not that anyone could tell, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. But there were more important things than a cute human girl. Especially when she was a hunter that killed his king for a living.
Killed them with her voice. Her beautiful, gentle, siren…
“Mystery?” someone interrupted his thoughts. The man hadn’t even noticed that they had passed by the girls already and were standing near the center of the market place.
“What is it Baby?”
“You need to lock in”
“What the hell does that even mean?” Mystery scoffed at the new terminology the youngest demon had begun using. Baby seemed to really enjoy human humor.
“We’re about to perform so focus you idiot”
Jinu never seemed to run out of dumb ideas. None of the boys knew how they found themselves camping outside of the fan sign hall. All Mystery could remember was playing this game called Valorant or something of the sort, only to be summoned away to the front of a line.
As they were letting it Mystery understood everything. Jinu wanted to flirt with his girl- enemy. Yep. Ignoring the sudden fuss when the purple lady said the groups would sit together, Mystery quickly found himself sitting beside the girl with the space buns again.
He quickly learnt that her name was Zoey and she was the main rapper of the group. This shocked him slightly seeing as she was so bubbly and sweet. He’d honestly thought the scary pink lady was the main rapper, but seeing as Baby was their rapper he should've known better.
Eventually, Mystery mustered up the courage to ask her a question only to be interrupted by a fan. How dare they interrupt him? He didn’t even notice he was barking at them to scare them away until Zoey began to chastise him for it.
“No! Bad Saja Boy!” she shamed, tapping his head with the pen until he calmed down. Mystery slouched back into his chair, what was coming over him?? From just two seats across, he could hear Baby snickering at him.
As he watched Zoey reassure the fan that everything was alright, why did she have to hold the fans hands???, he realized this feeling might have started to become a bigger problem than he thought it would be. —
The battle was over. Gwi-ma was finally defeated and the underworld was closed up for good. With the odd stillness that followed, Mystery found himself in a strange place. He found himself at peace. Well.. kinda?
He still couldn’t sleep properly as he wasn't used to the silence of the overworld at night, and his hair still got frizzy and big when it was humid, and sometimes Baby stole his earrings, but all in all, it was fine. Livable. Manageable. Different.
The dance practice room was empty aside from him and Zoey. The floor-to-ceiling mirrors stretched across the front wall, reflecting the two of them. Zoey in her grey sweats and a tiny white crop top (which was so unfair), and Mystery, slouched on the floor, playing dead.
“You’re not even trying to learn the moves,” Zoey said through a laugh, twisting her water bottle open.
“I am,” he groaned. “Just give me a week to actually get interested first.”
Zoey rolled her eyes at his dramatic behaviour, something that only ever seemed to pop out around her. “That choreography isn’t even that hard.”
“Says the girl with demon hunter blood and abs. This must be so easy for you.”
Zoey blinked. “Excuse you?”
Mystery sat up, one knee drawn up, resting an arm on it as he spoke, “It’s distracting.”
“You’re distracting,” she said pointedly, and then immediately flushed when she realized what she said. “I mean..!”
Mystery smirked, tying his hair up into a bun. He was fully aware of the fact that Zoey believed he was ‘just her type’ and took full advantage of it whenever he could. “You think I’m distracting?”
“I meant your weird slouchy pose was distracting,” Zoey huffed, face red, eyes looking everywhere but his face as she sipped her water too fast.
He liked this. The way her cheeks puffed when she was annoyed. The way she was clearly trying not to look at him while fixing her buns. The way she…
Stopped. Right in front of the mirror.
“Oh my god,” she said, squinting at the mirror.
“What?”
“I look jacked,” she whispered, checking her arm. “Is this what Abby feels like all the time?”
Mystery’s smile faded. “Abby?”
“Yeah. Look at this.” She lifted her arm slightly, flexing, and raised a brow in approval. “No wonder people like his stage presence. He’s a wall of charisma and strength.”
Mystery’s eye twitched. “What does he have that I don’t?” he muttered.
Zoey turned. “Hm?”
“Nothing!” Mystery said too fast. “Just… practicing the dance moves.”
Zoey snorted. “Sure you are. Just like how you were 'barking to protect our image' at the fan sign.”
Mystery’s eyes narrowed. “That fan was sketchy. Their aura was weird.” Aura was a word Baby taught him.
“Uh huh. You were jealous,” she teased, walking past him to grab her towel.
“I was not,” he lied poorly. “I’m incapable of jealousy. Demon, remember?”
“Right,” she dragged, throwing the towel at him. “And I’m incapable of sarcasm.”
She left him there on the floor, towel over his head, ego bruised. But even as she walked away, Mystery found his eyes trailing her again. He hated how soft he’d become.
Hated how often his thoughts drifted back to that first fan sign. To the first time he saw her in the overworld. Laughing. Blushing.
She'd been so red when they passed her in the alleyway, her and Mira swooning over Abby’s opened shirt while she looked like she wanted the ground to swallow her whole. He’d noticed her immediately. And it wasn't just because she was cute. (Okay, that was part of it.)
It was because she was human. So very human. Something he, at the time, didn’t realise he would want so bad. And yet she’d stayed in his mind like a song he couldn’t stop humming.
Even now, months later, with the world no longer ending and his contract with Gwi-ma gone, Mystery still found himself aching whenever she looked at someone else with even a fraction of the warmth she gave him.
Abby. Abby.
The name echoed in his mind again like some cursed chant. Summoning courage, he stood and marched up behind her. “You didn’t answer me.”
Zoey glanced at him in the mirror. “About?”
“What does he have that I don’t have?”
Zoey blinked. “Wait. You were serious?”
Mystery folded his arms. “I barked at a fan for you. I gave up my spot as center for that weird duet stage. I let you touch my hair. That’s practically marriage in demon culture.”
Zoey’s jaw dropped in laughter. “Mystery, I pat everyone’s head when they’re being a weirdo.”
“You don’t call everyone a good boy.” he pointed out.
Zoey flushed bright pink. “That was one time! I was trying to calm you down!”
“It worked.”
“Stop being dramatic.” Zoey laughed, softer this time, walking closer.
He hated how fast his heartbeat got when she stepped into his personal space.
“You’re not Abby,” she said gently.
“I know that,” he huffed.
“But you’re Mystery,” she added, poking his chest, her eyes peering into his. “You’re weird and intense and accidentally funny and overly stylish. And I like that.”
Mystery blinked. “Wait. What?”
Zoey turned, clearly trying not to look at him anymore. “Don’t make me say it again.”
“You like me?”
“Don’t push it.”
“I’m pushing it,” he said, stepping beside her. “You said you like me.”
“Fine,” Zoey grumbled. “I like you.”
Mystery grinned.
“I knew barking was the right way to go.”
“Don’t make it weird.”
“I’m going to bark at Abby next time I see him.”
“No!”
But Mystery was already planning it.
If he had a heart, it would be doing cartwheels.
He glanced at her reflection again, her cheeks warm, eyes shy, and something settled in him.
“Hey,” he said suddenly.
Zoey looked up.
“I like you too. Even if your abs are unfair.”
Zoey broke into laughter, her head tilting back.
And for once, Mystery didn’t mind the quiet that came with the over world. He didn’t mind the quiet anywhere as long as it meant he could listen to the girl he probably shouldn’t have fallen for, laugh her heart out.

CLOCKED IN
Tumblr media
pairing: aaron hotchner x fake!fiancee!reader summary: hotch is trying his hardest to keep it together when your so-called friends crash the night out, good thing the bau are world class shit stirrers, based on this request. warnings: fluff, protective hotch but also protective bau!! brief reference to them meeting which can be read here word count: 1.3k
✧ masterlist | ✧ alina's 1k bar
Tumblr media
Hotch was, against all odds, and probably his own expectations, actually having a good time. Shocking, really. But he knew exactly why, it was you. You sitting under the glittering mirrorball light, talking with your hands mid-explanation.
It was your first official time meeting the team, and he wasn’t even a little bit surprised by how quickly you charmed every single person at the table. You had that effect on people. It was something he’d always admired about you, and okay, maybe envied a little too. He wasn’t exactly known for being warm or approachable. His voice didn’t magically pull smiles from strangers. Yours did.
And yet somehow, you—completely out of the blue—had walked into a bar similar to this one and asked him, a total stranger, to pretend to be your fiance for the night. Still one of the most absurd things he’s ever heard and he deals with absurd for a living.
Maybe that bit of envy came from a selfish place, though. Because he liked to think that the effervescent side of you was something you saved just for him, but it wasn’t because you were like that with everyone. All grins, all giggles, all theatrics because that’s who you were. And it made him furious inside to imagine anyone taking advantage of that. Like those awful friends who made you feel like you had to lie in the first place.
Still, in a roundabout, slightly messed-up way, he guessed he owed them one. Because their cruelty had delivered you straight to him.
He was mid-sip of his drink when he caught the way your smile wobbled. And when you did a double take towards the front door, his eyes were inclined to follow to see who or what he was going to have to glare at for sucking the light from your face that fast.
He didn’t even try to hide the exasperated sigh that left him.
“Oh boy,” you muttered, eyes still on the door.
“Do you know them?” JJ asked, leaning forward over a cluster of empty cocktail glasses. “Because they’re pointing.”
“And coming over,” Morgan added, eyebrows raised.
You straightened in your seat. “That’s…the quarter of the group responsible for me meeting Aaron.”
“No!” Penelope gasped, hand flying to her chest. “You mean those friends? The ones you had to lie to? The whole fake-fiancé saga?”
“In the flesh,” you confirmed, grabbing your drink and taking two very necessary gulps as Aaron braced himself for the evening to dissolve into performative lunacy.
You shifted in your seat beside him, shoulders going stiff in that I’m fine, this is fine way that meant the opposite. And yeah, his jaw clenched. Because the idea of you having to perform just to feel safe, or liked, or respected? Made his blood run hot. Especially when you were surrounded by people who actually saw you—really saw you—and didn’t need a single performance to adore you.
“Oh my god! Okay! We all have very important parts to play,” Penelope whisper-yelled at the table.
“Just don’t make it weirder than it has to be,” Emily muttered, toying with her paper straw.
“You want another drink?” Rossi nudged Aaron who just glared at the older man. “Come on, lighten up. I didn’t get to see you in fiancé-action last time.”
“Consider yourself lucky,” Hotch said dryly, reaching over and resting his hand over yours in a squeeze.
You turned to face him and the panicked look on your face made his stomach knot. “I’m sorry for this. I had no idea they’d be here, I haven’t even spoken to them in months.”
“You don’t owe me an apology, just like you don’t owe them a damn thing.” His tone softened. “But if you want an out, just say the word, I’ll make up an excuse and we’re gone.”
You opened your mouth to respond, but it was too late.
“Wow,” came a voice you knew all too well. “Look who it is.”
“Veronica.” You offered a perfectly polite, perfectly fake smile. “Dani,” you added, glancing at her tagalong.
“Mind if we sit with your fiancé and friends?” Veronica asked, already pulling a chair over from the table behind because she wasn’t actually asking or waiting for permission. She wedged herself in between you and Emily.
Dani copied her motions, plopping herself down between Penelope and Spencer. The poor genius looked like he was calculating the fastest way to disassociate, especially when Dani’s manicured hands rested a little too close to his drink.
“So,” Veronica said, all teeth. “Are you going to introduce us?” She glanced around the table. “How do you all know the happy couple?”
“We work with Hotch,” Morgan answered smoothly, lifting his glass. “FBI.”
“Oh. Wow. That’s… intense.”
“Depends on the day,” Emily chimed in, “But yeah, keeps us busy.”
Veronica’s icy gaze slid to you, her mouth twitching. “Must be nice. All that… structure and stability. Probably pays off a little more than fashion, huh?”
You barely had time to get a word out before Penelope jumped in for you. “Oh, sweetie. One campaign of hers pays more than my entire annual salary. And I’m not exactly working for peanuts.”
You let out a sheepish laugh, just as Aaron’s thumb pressed gently against your hand, as if reminding you to breathe.
“Anyway,” Dani piped up, suddenly remembering she had both a voice and a personality, “how’s wedding planning going? You must be deep in it by now, right?”
“Weren’t you just looking at venues?” Rossi added with a grin, like he’d been personally waiting for this moment. Hotch made a mental note to get him store-brand whiskey for his next birthday.
“We were,” Hotch replied as casually as he could manage. “She wants a beach wedding. I want one where her dress doesn’t blow into the ocean.”
Morgan snorted while JJ shook her head, trying and failing to hide a smile.
“Tell the truth,” Emily grinned. “You just don’t want sand in your shoes.”
“I don't want sand in my everything,” Hotch said flatly, taking a sip of his drink at the involuntary conversation.
“Fair,” Morgan laughed, tipping his glass towards him. “Sand gets everywhere. Man’s got a point.”
“Well, the guest list must be pretty large then,” Veronica went on, smiling just a little too sweetly. “Half the FBI, and of course us, your best friends. You’ll need something that can accommodate everyone.”
“We’re keeping it small,” Hotch almost snarled, his tone landing somewhere between polite restraint and you’re not fucking invited. Not that there was an actual wedding, but if he ever did marry you, those two would be the last names on the list.
“Oh! But you have to have bridesmaids, right?” Dani pressed on, gesturing between herself and Veronica. “I mean, you’re probably thinking of us, your best friends—”
“We haven’t gotten that far,” you cut her off.
“Besides,” Emily added with a shark-like smile, “it’s so hard to find dresses that don’t clash with fragile egos.”
Your eyebrows shot up before you could stop them. Morgan was grinning like a man thoroughly entertained. JJ stifled a laugh behind a cough. And Spencer? He just looked politely baffled, having subtly nudged his drink as far away from Dani’s claws as possible without making it look like he was giving it to Rossi.
Hotch, meanwhile, added a new line to his growing mental list: whatever bottle Emily wanted for her birthday, she was getting the top shelf version. Hell, maybe two.
Some of the tension in his chest eased a little and he hoped yours had too. Because if there was one thing his team excelled at, it was rallying around someone they’d decided was theirs. And judging by the grins, side-eyes, and Emily’s very intentional lack of filter, the BAU had officially clocked in.
Not for a case.
For you.

Dating Rumi HCs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
࣪𖤐.ᐟ note -> GOD I LOVEEEE RUMI !!! She is one of my f/o’s now hehehehe
࣪𖤐.ᐟ warnings -> none.
࣪𖤐.ᐟ content includes -> fluff, secret relationship (from the public), you’re her biggest fan, civilian! reader, shows, rehearsals, cuddling, kissing, kissing her marks, pre and post movie.
Tumblr media
۫ ꣑ৎ Being in a relationship with THE Rumi from HUNTR/X can be quite difficult. The two of you have to make sure to keep your relationship a secret from the public because of the fans and as to keep you safe knowing that there are certain types of fans that wouldn’t like the fact that Rumi is in a relationship. The only people that do know about yours and Rumi's relationship are Bobby, Mira and Zoey. Not even Celine knows about you.
۫ ꣑ৎ She does not want you to know about her, Mira and Zoey being hunters. It is also another reason as to why your relationship is hidden, as for the demons not to find out about how important you are to her and even her friends. Rumi feels horrible whenever she accidentally misses your dates and uses the excuse that she was busy with idol work when in reality she was killing demons.
۫ ꣑ৎ Rumi adores how close you are to Mira and Zoey. They are her family, her best friends, so seeing you being so close to Mira and Zoey makes her happy. Though admittedly sometimes she gets a bit jealous, she knows that Mira and Zoey would never try to make a move on you and she trusts you completely, but Rumi just can’t help but sometimes be jealous.
۫ ꣑ৎ She loves it when you come by for HUNTR/X’s rehearsals. Rumi already tries very hard, but when you are there, watching as she and the girls practice? Rumi gives more than her all. Once the rehearsal is over Rumi is a bit hesitant to hug you because she is sweaty but will gladly kiss you if you want to, asking if you liked the new song and choreography.
۫ ꣑ৎ Rumi loves having those rare lazy days with you. She loves spending time with you in her room, cuddling up to you as the two of you watch a random movie. Rumi gets so whiney and pathetic when you try to pull away it honestly surprises you how this popular, confident idol turns into a wet kitty when you simply try to pull away from her cuddles
۫ ꣑ৎ She has so much money she doesn’t even know what to do with it anymore, so Rumi casually gives you a black card so you could buy whatever you want with her money. Hell she personally buys you a lot of things she just knows you will love for anniversaries, special days and even apologises when she has to cancel on your plans at the last minute. Rumi always puts a lot of thought in your gifts.
۫ ꣑ৎ Rumi was horrified when you too started stanning the Saja Boys. She knows that it isn’t your fault, after all they are literal demons that hypnotize their fans, but that doesn't mean that it didn’t hurt any less. Of course you were still her number one fan, but as the Saja Boys influence grew stronger it started to affect you even more.
۫ ꣑ৎ Once the Saja Boys and Gwi-Ma were defeated and the Honmoon had been repaired, Rumi knew she had a lot of explaining to do to you. Mira and Zoey offered to be there for Rumi and help her explain everything but Rumi refused, knowing she was the one who had to tell you the whole truth. She is just hoping you wouldn’t see her any differently.
۫ ꣑ৎ Rumi was very self conscious when you first saw her marks. She didn’t know how you would react to them, especially after learning the truth. She was surprised when you accepted her and her being a half-demon, something that genuinely made Rumi cry knowing that the person she loves the most accepts the part of her she has been taught to hide her whole life.
۫ ꣑ৎ The poor woman always gets flustered when you suddenly start kissing her demon marks when you two are cuddling. Rumi can’t help but be on the verge of tears whenever you compliment her marks and call them beautiful. She was taught that no one will understand her and accept her because of her marks, so knowing that you love and accept them means the world to Rumi.

This is only half a thought so far, but maybe other people want to chime in.
I’m doing Watch Machina (currently at episode 15) and Nein Again (currently at episode 21) while I also keep up with current Critical Role content (Age of Umbra episode 4) and something that bothers me a little is Matt’s current method of narration.
In C1, Matt’s style is very informal with regard to the narration. There’s little added drama via his tone, pace, or choice of words. “Toothy maw” became a meme pretty quickly, but the point of every description was to efficiently set the scene so the players could start their RP and choose what to do. There wasn’t as much precision with his descriptions, and of course that is a talent that takes a long time to hone when you’re describing lots of different things over the course of several hours. However, the narration was far less formal and calculated than his NPC dialogue, so (in combination with voice acting) it was very easy to determine when Matt was in character or not. It wasn’t a bad thing; Matt’s very casual narration and formal dialogue leading up to the Chroma Conclave’s attack on Emon was excellent because it was so sudden, leading the players and the audience to experience the exact same shock the NPCs would have. It’s not a bad way to narrate. If anything, it made the heartfelt moments so poignant, especially at the end of the campaign. That description of snow drops would not have been nearly as impactful if Matt had narrated that way all the time.
In C2, Matt started getting more descriptive and slowed down his narration to match. As Aabria would put it, he “paints a word picture” and includes more environmental storytelling for the setting itself, not just things for the characters to expressly interact with. I think this is part of what led to the Nein interacting with the set dressing more: Matt mentioned it, so it must be important! This led to some fun hijinks as time went on, and it gave Wildemount a different feeling than Tal’dorei. I couldn’t tell you that Emon had a particular vibe to it other than it being a big city, but howdy do we know that Berleben is full of nosy, bored people in a smelly swamp, and we sure know that Zadash is a bustling city with stark class segregation while Nicodranas is a beautiful trade hub with a mixture of different cultures. I think part of that may have come from working on the source books (they have similar language for the plot hooks and location entries). However, that method of narration was mostly limited to first descriptions of a new place or events (“cutscenes” like the attack in Zadash). Within a scene, Matt was still fairly casual in his discussions with the players.
But currently in Age of Umbra, and with a good chunk of C3, Matt’s narration is far more deliberate. There is a consistently slower pace compared to earlier campaigns, usually only speeding up in combat. Part of that may be for production purposes (easier for transcriptions and closed captioning), but it also impacts the pacing of the game itself. There’s also that presence of a new character: the narrator himself has a voice, and that is now part of the story. It’s extremely noticeable when the cast gets Matt to “break character” as the narrator to only be a DM. It requires a baseline level of formality for that to happen, and Matt committed to it in nearly every scene, regardless of the context of the scene. While that doesn’t feel all that strange for Age of Umbra (it fits well with the soulsborne style of game), it does make me realize that it’s part of why C3 felt incongruous. Like, sorry about the dead horse, but I was expecting C3 to be pulpy, which very much benefits from the narration style of C1 rather than the formal narration style Matt prefers currently. Punchy, informal narration sets a player expectation of “you’re here to get something done and I’ll tell you if it works,” while the current style instead lends itself to “you’re part of my story and this is the tone.” The former is great for fast-paced roleplay and the latter is suited to unhurried storytelling—which wouldn’t feel as mismatched if C3 hadn’t been a story where the PCs needed to prevent a second calamity within the course of a few weeks.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this was a mistake. Matt clearly enjoys how he narrates currently, and every DM is entitled to their preference. However, I think there’s a lesson in here that varying the narration style to match the purpose of the scene and story would benefit the players and the audience.
To be fair here, Matt is not the only DM who doesn’t mix it up very often. Brennan Lee Mulligan (Dimension 20) is far closer to the C1 style of fast, informal narration with very limited, specific instances where he would slow down for drama; there is no “narrator” character in his players’ story. D20 has a far more casual tone to its seasons than CR does in its campaigns. Luis Carazo (Tales Unrolled) narrates similarly to Matt, with a focus on instilling an emotional reaction for the players to deal with, and the players collaboratively join Luis as the narrator for their own characters; it’s a back and forth where the DM and players contribute to that additional presence. Tales Unrolled is on the opposite end of the spectrum from D20, with a clear feeling that it is a storytelling experience.
Again, choosing one narration style over another isn’t necessarily a flaw. However, I think varied narration is a tool that most DMs underutilize. If used carefully, adjusting narration styles within sessions on the fly could enhance the experience of an Actual Play campaign for everyone involved. It could be used as a signal to the players for what type of scene this will be or when a scene is shifting. It could also signal to performers in a show for pacing within an episode (hijinks are over, time for some drama; time to cool down from the tension).
But, as always, it’s easier to point stuff out like this than it is to do it in practice.

The "a thread of order" blog recently referenced something Carlos said after the 2024 RG final: “In the fifth set of the final is the time to give it all, fight until you can’t fight anymore. That’s what makes you a warrior, and I consider myself a warrior.” That quote, together with his constant references to the movie "300", his on-court histrionics and the supernatural big-final-moment level of tennis he can produce, made me spiral into an idiotic sincaraz fan-theory (OBVIOUSLY inaccurate and fictional.) So here it is:
I personally suspect that Carlos perceives matches (especially important ones) as if they were movies/plays and he's the one playing the hero & warrior archetype. It's partly why he needs the crowds: they're all part of the scene, and also big reactions feel more epic. And it's also why he can sometimes reach an unbelievable level at the acme of big matches, something that would require inhuman amounts of confidence and self-belief: that's because in that moment he's not just Carlos the excellent tennis player-normal guy, he's not just himself (that would cause some amount of insecurity) but he's actually embodying The Heroic Warrior archetype! And he knows that there's a divine narrative script in place for heroes in stories (matches) which will make him prevail at the end. It's basically a narrative archetype/role he tries to live up to and embody in matches, because he needs to see the matches and himself as "something more" in order to then get more from himself on court. And when the opponent is weak or the match isn't exciting the illusion of being the Hero-Warrior is obviously harder to maintain obviously.
On the other side we have Jannik, who tries to block out the crowd and be composed, and only communicates with his team and his opponent. Where Carlos tries to see the whole stadium as part one big scene that's enacting something more than a tennis match, Jannik tries to shrink his world to the strict permiter of the singles court plus his own box. For him it's a competitive pro game, it's his career and his public role, it's exciting and fun and terrible but it's not a big metaphor or an archetypal flight of fancy. He's competing against his opponent and trying to play the best tennis possible. He's "just" himself on court, the player-version of himself.
[I wonder if this maybe would have something to do with Jannik not focusing on tennis until he was 13 (and having a more gradual and setback-prone rise) while Carlos has been immersed in tennis from birth basically (and has obviously had a more sudden and easier rise in the scene.) I don't think that can be the reason though, it's too superficial.]
op this essay is awesome. i was just answering an unrelated ask and coming to the same conclusion that carlos thrives on the narrative import of big moments. he is Aware of them in a way that not every athlete can let themselves be aware, he is Aware of what it means to rise to the occasion. classic advice is "pretend it's just another match" but carlos demonstrably performs better in Big Moments than in just another match.
also think this contributed to the post-olympics crashout. not just defeat, not just a match he could have won, but failure at the ultimate climax of the ultimate stage of the biggest theater in sport, the global superevent literally created to propagate the idea that Sports Is More Than Sports. all that, and here's where he finds out that sometimes sheer protagonism just isn't enough. narrative of choice trumped by other, bigger narrative. i'm sure that was wildly destabilizing to experience for the first time, lol, good (????) thing he's got the protagonism back on track now.
this all just boils down, again, to the question of ego and self-made mythos and can you achieve greatness without storytelling. (© user radelulu.) it is sooooooooo fun to see absolute black-and-white photonegative-inverses in a direct clash for our entertainment. tho bc the clash is taking place in the theater of sports the table is rigged and the house, aka storytelling, always wins—the only way to beat it is to remove yourself from the table.

﹙♡﹚everytime i try to write pure fluff about this man, it always starts going south !! (hehehe) anyway, he's so cute, he'd totally color coordinate your outfits, even your pajamas omgggg
Tumblr media
it was funny at first.
you mentioned a bracelet you thought was cute, and the next day, you found five variations of said bracelet on your nightstand. all in different colors.
then, you were browsing through an online shop and added a coat to your wishlist.
that same night, you found two boxes on your bed, each with the same coat, but in two different sizes. he knows you like wearing fitting clothes, but there are days when you love to be swallowed by soft fabric.
however... this last time felt a bit excessive.
you were looking for snow boots, since you were going to the north together. you briefly mentioned your current boots were old, and sylus didn't hesitate to buy not one, not two, but four pairs: black, brown, deep burgundy, and beige.
“sylus, this isn't—”
he just kisses your temple.
“are they not to your liking, kitten?”
you sigh, staring at the mountain of shoe boxes on top of your bed.
“sylus, this is excessive. it's overconsu—”
he kisses you again, and this time, on the lips.
“there's no such thing as excess when it comes to you, love.”
you look up at him with a soft frown, but you know better than to protest. soon enough, you both start getting ready for bed. he's already at your side, helping you undress.
before you can walk to the closet, he clicks his tongue, one brow arching in that slow, deliberate way.
“easy there, kitten. it's playtime.”
that sends a shiver down your spine. his voice… low, calm, velvety. is he going to…?
but no. he turns around and starts picking out pajamas. he holds pieces up, inspects the fabric, carefully looking through every set you own —and that he's bought for you.
ah. playtime, as in dressing-you-up-like-a-mannequin playtime.
you giggle but stay still, obedient, as he slips the soft nightwear onto your body. then, he changes his mind, slides it off, trying another set.
that's when he notices you actually do have the same pieces in multiple colors and sizes. he doesn't care, of course. he'd buy anything for you, if you so much as glanced at it.
instead of getting impatient, he seems... amused. there's a slight grin on his lips as he watches how cooperative you're being: quiet, waiting.
he'll reward you for it later.
finally, he picks up a black button-up shirt. it's his. sleek, tailored, and far too elegant to waste on sleep —but he'd rather see you in it than at any gala or important occasion.
after all, nothing is more important to him than you.
he puts it on you slowly, long fingers expertly working the buttons, one by one. he hums in satisfaction before placing a slow, lingering kiss on your lower lip.
his eyes are darker now. intense. there's something intimate —almost reverent—, in how he handles you. especially when he's dressing you in his clothes.
“you know, sweetie? you might be right.”
he whispers while cupping your left cheek. you nuzzle against his palm.
“you think so, sy?”
he chuckles lowly, leaning down to rub his nose against yours.
“mhm. i'll stop buying you clothes,” he says, before scooping you up in one swift motion. your thighs wrap around his waist instinctively. “i'll keep you in my clothes instead.”
and with that, he carries you off. it soon becomes a display of soft touches, easy strength on his end, and a possessive yet adoring glint in his eyes.
honestly? either end of the spectrum doesn't sound so bad anymore.

Hi certified sex ed! I was hoping for some advice on something :)
My (12 years old) sister recently bought a book that has explicit smut in it. Normally, i wouldn’t particularly care as (to be honest) i was reading similar when i was a bit older than her, and also reading smut isn’t the worst thing in the world for her lmao. However, my only concern is that this book portrays a particularly toxic relationship, including in that scene. Obviously it’s important for her to have expanded views or something similar, but i worry this book isn’t the best idea, especially as this will probably be one of her first impressions of sex, etc.
Should i stop her reading it? At the moment, i don’t think i will, but i am going to warn her that they aren’t accurate portrayals of real life relationships :’)
Thanks!
Hullo!
Here's the thing: she bought it! It's hers. If she wants to read it, she's probably gonna read it even if you take it away or find something "better".
But if your concern is that the sex is in an unhealthy/toxic relationship, don't tell her its not an accurate portrayal of real life relationships. That's not true.
If she knows literally more than three people or has ever turned on the television, she knows toxic relationships exist. Its not a stretch for her to realize oh, sex can be a part of that.
That said, feel free to tell her the book has (a?) sex scene(s?) and that it's not part of a healthy relationship. You could even recommend her other books that involve sex scenes in more healthy relationships if you're worried about this being a bad first impression, that way she has options and knows what's going on.
If she knows the book has a sex scene and that its not part of a healthy relationship, as well as knows she can read other books with sex scenes with more healthy relationships, I don't think you'll have to worry much.
Sometimes first impressions of things are weird but as long as she's aware and she knows she has choices (and someone to come to if she has questions/concerns), she'll probably be just fine.
Good luck! I hope this helps a little, lemme know if you have anymore questions. (This was actually a really fun question to get btw because I also have siblings and was very involved in the sex education aspect so I remember the worries and concern very vividly lol.)

Here's my silly old lady rant regarding education:
After watching so many FAIL ARMY episodes I can conclude that if people studied and applied chemistry, physics, and cause and affect...
Less people would get badly injured or break expensive shit.
Don't mix a shit ton of chemicals together Tiktok trend BS, then wonder how you created MUSTARD GAS.
People would also know what to do in an emergency. Grease fires are a good example of this...heck let's just bring back home economics and shop classes and it would eliminate half the videos.
Probably save some limbs and scorched eyebrows.
Mandatory first aid classes/CPR, biology, and Earth sciences. Let's remember we aren't indestructible like superheros or John Wick when it comes to slips, falls, slamming into things at high velocity, getting punched in the face.
GET IN THE HOUSE AND TAKE COVER during a tornado, hurricane, thunderstorm, flood for the love of God.
This isn't your moment to trend. But it might be your moment to die.
Your hair standing on end while outside is an INDICATOR of possibly getting hit by LIGHTNING... therefore NOT a photo moment.
Stay the fuck away from bears and elk.
Oh, and EXPAND MANDATORY driving school lessons. Because...well have you SEEN the HUGE plethora of those videos??? Lordy...
And as an aside from my rant about playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes....other important topics that should be mandatory in schools:
Accounting, banking, budgeting, business math, statistics, retirement planning, bureavement/compassion fatigue/ PTSD/CPSD (included in psychology), civics, critical thinking, semantics to name a few other gems.
I really do think, especially after people watching and doing my own dumb shit for 50 years, a really nice mixture of hard and soft sciences with literacy classes goes an awfully long way in the school of life. ✨
It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.
There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!

oh sion
your boyfriend is someone that is very lighthearted and fun-loving. he makes your rainy days sunny again and is the life of the party. you never thought there'd be a day where you'd find his lack of seriousness a bother to you. but like anything in life, too much of a good thing can easily become a bad thing. as time went by in your relationship, you, like anyone else, starting thinking more about the future — getting married, having kids, and buying a house together are things you wanted with sion. but the two of you tended to live more in the moment instead of constantly wondering what the future holds. it was only when you were nearing the end of your university schooling that you started to question sion regarding future endeavors, especially like getting married or buying a house together. you wanted to settle down, spend your forever with him.
but it seemed that whenever you brought it up, your boyfriend would change the topic or make it seem less serious than you thought it to be. the first few times you brushed it off, but the more he pushed it aside, the more it irritated you, to the point where you starting doubting sion's love for you, thinking he didn't want you for the long-run.
it all blew up one day when you went out with your parents for their anniversary dinner. it was just a family thing, so sion didn't tag along. "honey, when are you and sion getting married?" your mother had asked. you didn't respond, couldn't respond. all you managed to blurt out was, "i'm not sure yet, mom. we're still kinda young, you know?" she nodded understandingly and chuckled. "i suppose you're right. but you're going to graduate from university soon, and you can't live in the dorms forever. no pressure, sweetie. just something to think about."
her words had you thinking about marriage with sion up until the following day when you decided to relax at his dorm. both you and sion sat on the couch, cuddling as you watch your favorite tv show.
"sion?"
"hm? yes, baby?" he turned to look at you.
"when are we gonna get married?" you ask him. "we've been dating for a while now." sion's breath hitches at your question, and he scoffs before planting a kiss to your forehead. "let's not think about that right now baby, it's not what's important at the moment." your brows furrow in frustration, and you take a breath before speaking back.
"it is important. babe, you can't just brush it off every single time i ask you about getting married or moving in together — we're not getting any younger."
"i'm not brushing it off, it's just not what we should be prioritizing-"
"so when will you?"
"soon, baby. just not right now." you're slowly getting even more irritated.
"when is soon? it doesn't really seem like you want to get married to me..." you mumble towards the end.
"i never said that- why are you accusing me?"
"i'm not accusing you?? you're just not giving me a direct answer! sion, i'm going to get my degree soon. i need to know what plans you have for us-"
"i don't have any, i just- don't think about that stuff when it comes to you." he blurts out. you look at him silently, eyes wide. you sigh, not finding the energy to say anything back. "i'm gonna go home," you utter. "it's late." you sit up from the couch and grab your bag, walking towards the door. "baby, no— i didn't mean it like that," he says, grabbing your wrist. you muster a small smile, saying, "it's okay, let's just talk about this tomorrow." you take sion's hand off yours and walk out the door, leaving him standing there.
tomorrow never came. you stopped bringing it up after that one night, deciding not to stir up another argument again. sion noticed, of course. he thought you would mention marriage at a certain time, but two weeks went by and no words were spoken regarding your future. you began to drown in assignments and exams, and sion went back to mokpo to visit his parents. you two barely spoke, words like 'how are you?' and 'did you eat yet?' being thrown around. silence filled the space in your dorm, your texts, and your relationship.
you assumed he forgot, that he was actually glad that it was never mentioned again. but you were proved wrong when you arrived home one evening after a long study session at the library. you open your dorm to find it neatly organized, blankets folded and condiments put away into the pantry. you look around in confusion, until you see oh sion sitting on your couch, flowers in hand.
"what are you doing here?" you ask him, cautiously taking a step forward. he stands up and hands you the flowers, your fingers brushing against his. you realize then how much you missed this; how much you missed him. his touch, his affection. maybe you should've talked about this sooner. but sion beats you to it.
"we should've talked about this sooner. i'm sorry i didn't bring it up, i thought you didn't want to talk about it- okay, that's not the point. i wanted to give you a proper apology. i'm sorry i never took those conversations seriously and for always brushing it off. i lied when i said i don't think about that kind of stuff. in fact, i think about it too much. to be honest, i'm just-" he exhales shakily, "i'm scared. i'm scared that you'll realize you won't want forever with me, scared that the universe's idea of forever doesn't have us in it. but i realized that you want it as much as i do. so yes, i do want to get married, maybe in about a year, get our own place, have a family of our own, and grow old together. i want it all with you, so please, let me make it up to you."
you say nothing but grab his shoulders and pull him in for a warm embrace. both you and sion bask in each other's touch for a while, the world stopping for you two, the stars glistening in joy.
maeda riku
riku is a very patient and understanding person, you know all too well. but sometimes you wish he wasn't as patient as he is, especially now that his childhood friend nako moved to the same university you and riku attend. like any sweet person would do, riku welcomed her with open arms and let her adjust at her own pace. he introduced nako to you, of course, as well as sion, yushi, jaehee, ryo, and sakuya. over time, she became a part of your little group with the other guys.
you really had no problem with her being close with your boyfriend. no matter how much your friends said he was pushing boundaries, you trusted riku with everything in you. he always made time for you despite having to help nako get used to living in a new place. it started to get a little suspicious, like her getting way too close to riku, but alas, you decided to brush it off, thinking she was just shy to talk to others.
she was in fact, not shy to talk to others. you saw her conversing with some other girls in the halls, overhearing her saying something about how he's so hot and that she just needed to get rid of his girlfriend. you obviously knew she was referring to you and riku. you at least tried to warn riku, saying she's the devil's spawn, but he laughed it off, thinking you just had a little misunderstanding. but no matter how irritated you were, you sucked it up and just pushed those feelings down. but it all blew up one day for you when riku brought her to one of your dates.
the two of you had planned to watch the new wicked movie together. you were looking forward to it especially because you had a long week and needed some boyfriend time with your one and only. little did you know another person would be tagging along, because when you're waiting in front of the theater, you see riku walking towards you with nako by his side. "hi baby! sorry, little rain check — nako had to tag along because her place is full of termites. she had to call pest control to have them exterminated." he says happily, nako just stupidly nodding along.
as much as you tried to keep your composure, you couldn't help but scoff. you lean into riku's ear and whisper harshly, "you did not have to bring her. you could've had ryo or something hang out with her." he looks at you a little surprised, like he didn't expect you to not like the idea of another girl tagging along on your date. he whispers back, "i know, i tried, but she said she was more comfortable with me." your face bitters and you turn to nako, who is still standing there like she can't comprehend where she is. you cross your arms and sigh, "nako, i love you so much girl, but respectfully — this was supposed to be our date. meaning, just me and riku. nothing against you, but maybe we can call ryo or sakuya so they can accompany you. is that fine?"
she purses her lips in concentration and looks back at you, "u-um, i don't want someone e-else to join. i'm only okay with riku-chan." it takes everything in you not to smack the crap out of her face. you're not one to fight, but you're also not one to let people disrespect your boundaries. "nako, this is a date. just for riku and i," you repeat slowly. she grumbles softly and speaks up again, "i can j-just stay on the side! don't worry." you cannot believe the audacity this girl has, so you take your car keys and turn back to riku, whispering into his ear once more.
"if she won't leave, i will."
riku doesn't even have time to react before you're taking your car keys out and walking to the parking lot. he tries to go after you, but nako grabs his arm and asks him to stay. you later send a voice message to riku later that day, full of words like "you have no boundaries!' to "why don't you just date nako then for christ's sake?" riku heads to your dorm immediately, pounding on the door aggressively. you open the door and find him standing there, sweat dripping down the tips of his hair. "what do you want, maeda?" you say coldly. your boyfriend winces at your tone, and he asks, "can i please come in?" you give him a disgusted look, scoffing, "fine."
he sits on your dining table, panting. you assume he ran here. a small part of you feels bad for him because he seems so tired, but the bigger part tells you to just leave him be. as he catches his breath, you take it upon yourself to start the conversation.
"look, honey. i know nako is a nice girl and all but-"
"i'm sorry. you were right — she's literally the devil's spawn. she tried to get me to stay, saying we could go on a date instead. god, i don't know how i didn't see it sooner. i just left her there, told her not to talk to me again. and i blocked her on everything. i'm so sorry, baby."
you walk over and pinch riku's cheek, and he winces at the pain. "i told you!!" you scold. he laughs despite the sting and nods. you snicker, enjoying the fact that he just lets you do this to him. you cup his face and kiss riku, lips capturing each other's effortlessly.
even after you two reconciled, riku did his best to make it up to you anyway, buying you gifts and taking you out to more dates than you've ever been to before. whenever nako passes by, he gives her a look nastier than spoiled milk to the point where you have to tell him to stop so she doesn't try to beat his ass.
and whenever you think about her from time to time, he never fails to reassure you and let you know he's the only one for you as you are for him. maybe having an incredibly patient boyfriend is good after all.
tokuno yushi
your relationship with yushi is peaceful because he isn't one to start arguments and you're not one to provoke him. but you noticed that he doesn't really give details regarding his day or events that are coming up. you feel that sometimes he talks to you like you're an acquaintance and not a lover. you try to bring it up to him as you're both making dinner in your dorm.
"yushi, baby."
"yes, my love?"
"i noticed that you don't really like- tell me everything."
"huh? but i do, baby."
"i know, but like, you just say 'i had class today' or 'i went to the store.' you don't say all the details- hell, i don't even know your schedule."
he purses his lips a little before continuing. "i don't think you need to know all of the details."
you turn around to roll your eyes before sighing, "yeah, i guess."
maybe yushi thought that'd be the end of that conversation, but he was incredibly wrong. you hate arguing with yushi because it never gets you anywhere, so you do the second best thing and give him a taste of his own medicine. every single time he asks you, "how was your day, baby?" all you say is "good," "okay," "alright." is it petty? definitely. but it's better than screaming and yelling at your boyfriend, isn't it?
you were slowly getting impatient. it's been about a week, and it seemed like yushi was a little too nonchalant to notice how petty you were trying to be. but little did you know, he did notice. how could he not? you used to tell him every single thing, from what time you woke up to what brand socks you decided to put on for the day. but now your responses are one or two words. he wondered what he did wrong, until he thought back to your little argument and realized that you were just doing it to get back at him. he had a plan in his mind and decided to go for it.
one day, you and yushi are hanging out at a nearby cafe after class. silence isn't uncommon for you two, but this particular silence is too unbearable, so you suck it up and ask your boyfriend how his day was.
"well, it was good." of course, you think.
"i had science first, and all we did was write some notes while our professor talked about our upcoming test. then i had my language class, which was much better because we did a little group activity as a way to memorize the terms we learned. lunch was okay, sion and riku had to stay back at their class so they weren't there. i had to basically babysit ryo and saku. my last class was math, which was so boring, i almost fell asleep. no, i did actually. riku had to wake me up. how about you, baby?"
you're staring at yushi like he grew a second head because he just spoke more words than he does when talking to his friends. you point at him, absolutely puzzled. "what, who- who are you? what did you do with my boyfriend?" you say accusingly. yushi can't contain it anymore and laughs at your reaction. he takes your hand from across the table and rubs his thumb on your knuckles.
"it's me, y/n. you thought i didn't notice how you started replying like me?" he says. all you can do is stare at him, not expecting him to bring it up. "i'm sorry for what i said last week. maybe you don't need to hear all the details, but you want to, and that's what i love about you. the genuine interest you have for others. i realized that those small things matter to you, and that it's what keeps our relationship interesting. i'll work on it, for you. only if you promise to just tell me next time. i know you don't wanna fight, but it's better than leaving things unsaid."
you smile softly and chuckle. "god, i hate how well you know me," you say sarcastically. "i'm sorry too, i should've just told you instead of making things difficult." he shakes his head, "it's okay, we'll both learn."
your relationship with yushi is peaceful because he isn't one to start arguments and you're not one to provoke him. but it's also peaceful because he understands you like no other and doesn't invalidate your feelings, rather, he makes you feel seen, heard. you learn that he talks about his day vaguely because he pays attention to other things, like the way you hold his hand in the cold of the night, the way your nose scrunches when your allergies are getting worse again, and the way you look at him like he hung the stars in the sky.
author's note: hiii! requested by @pppopppyyy :)) i hope it's okay :'> have a good day/night everyone i love uuuuu!!

I'll be waiting (ch. 4)
Prev |
When a wound puts you in the way of your almost ex-husband, the months without talking are over and perhaps it is the opportunity to resume your marriage or end it.
*English is not my first language
*Sorry for medical inaccuracies
Chapter 4
After the exams, you were waiting for Robby. The pain was bearable, but you wanted this to end. You were never good at waiting, and the messages on your phone about work related stuff were ending your patience. You heard a noise and raised your eyes.
“Hey, y/n, how everything is going here? Are we making your visit pleasant?”
You laughed at Dana’s salute. “Yes, of course, the best scores for all of you, especially for you”.
Dana came close, sat on the bed with you, and touched your hand. “It’s good to see you, even in these circumstances”.
You smiled to her, “I hope the next time will be with some wine and dinner.”
She smiled wider, “Of course, but first, have you talk to the police?”
You knew that it was required to talk to the police, the assault to medical personnel was a big problem, and it was important to file a complaint. “Not yet, but the security staff already talk with the police when they came for the dad, I think that they would contact me soon.”
She got up still with a little concern in her eyes. “OK, do you need anything?”
You took a breath and smiled. “Yes, get out of here”.
Both of you laughed. “Soon. See you later”.
While you were waiting, Robby was exiting trauma 2 with Collins by his side.
“I heard y/n is here, is she ok?”
Robby was still anxious but thanked that the staff was worried about you. Heather was now a dear friend, her heart always so big that when she knew about you and Robby, only said “you fit like a glove” and smiled.
“Yes, she is here, probably only a dislocated shoulder. In fact, I’m going to see if the results are ready…”
Robby approached the station and, on a tablet, reviewed your file, the results of the tests were ready, confirming his diagnosis.
“Yes, just the shoulder.”
Collins nodded. “Do you need help?”
Robby smiled. “No, thanks. Perlah could do it with me. Remined me, when the new guys would come?”
Collins knew that welcoming the new students and interns was not the favorite part of the day for Robby, even though he was a good teacher. “In two days”.
Robby started to walk to where Perlah was, still talking to Collins. “Right, well, this was a good case to learn, but whatever, shame on them to not be here now”.
Both laughed and parted ways.
After the reduction, Robby was putting you in a sling. “It would be a little difficult to make your daily activities, but everything will be alright in a couple of weeks, if something doesn’t feel right, call me or come here, we could check it out, ok, sweetheart?”
You were looking at your hand. “I was wondering how I’m going to work with my dominant hand restricted”
Robby looked at you like you were saying odd things. “Work? That’s what worries you?”
You nodded, if there was anything you two were alike in, it was that you both liked your work very much. “Yes, Robby. I need to work”.
“No, you need to rest. I’m sure someone can do your work while you recover.”
You looked at him, a little angry because if someone’s gonna lecture you about proper rest, it will not be Robby, the workaholic.
“We have a lot of work; the social service department is understaffed like everything around here. I cannot put that burden on someone else. You know how it is.”
Silently, Perlah got out, she liked to gossip, but this was an argument that she didn’t want to take part.
“Please, hear your doctor’s advice. If you don’t wanna listen to me, talk to Abbot, or I can bring you Collins or Mohan. They would say the same. I will bring Kiara, you can arrange something. Or I will call Gloria.”
You were surprised, Robby talking willingly to Gloria? Yeah, when the hell freezes.
“Robby, it’s not up to you”.
It was the turn of Robby to look surprised. He took a step back, but didn’t change his argument.
“Look, I know that I don’t have a word about your life anymore, but what you been through it’s not normal and you need to take some time off, please.”
You looked at each other for almost a minute in silence. You knew that he was worried about you, as a doctor and as a co-worker.
“I will talk to Gloria, maybe I could stay at home today and tomorrow, that’s all the time I’m willing to take.”
You committed to that, not giving up another inch. Robby swiped the back of his hand across his forehead.
“Ok, at least take those days off. But really rest, please.”
You half smiled at him. “Yes, of course. But I need to do laundry, cook, you know, the normal things.”
Before his brain had time to think about it, he answered you. “I could bring you something to eat now and later I can bring you dinner.”
Both were surprised by his offer. Dinner? After so many months without talking?
But the love that you still have for Robby was bigger than your fears and doubts.
“Well, in that case, sure. You can bring me dinner and give me a sandwich while my papers are ready.”
Both of you smiled, and there was a gleam in his eyes that you had missed.
He started to walk backwards. “Right, a sandwich is on the way.”
You laughed and waited for him.
You were dressed and ready to go to talk to Gloria. So, you walked to the nurse station to say goodbye to Dana. “I’m going upstairs, just wanna say bye.”
She came close to you and gave you a light hug. “Everything is well between Robby and you? Perlah said that you were fighting.”
You puffed. “We weren’t fighting, it was a little exchange of arguments. Nothing serious. But yes, we are fine. We weren’t on the same page about my rest, but we made a deal, and everything is as well as it can be.”
She laughed at you. “Sure, honey. Oh, and, lo and behold, your husband!”
Behind you, you felt Robby’s presence.
“Well, it was a pleasure talking to you, Dana, as always.”
She laughed while you turned around to see Robby.
“I’m going to talk to Gloria, already talked with my co-workers to organize the activities.”
“Good, let me walk you to the elevator.”
He put his hand on your waist, and while you were walking, every sound of the ED fades away. The only thing that you could feel was the warmth of his hand, his perfume and his voice. When the doors of the elevator opened, you stepped in.
“Thanks, Robby, see you later?”
“Sure, I’ll bring you your favorite pizza.”
And that promise filled you with butterflies. Maybe, just maybe things can change.

For sure! I love talking about this stuff and rattling it off for the sake of Posting does make it slightly easier to write for real
The last thing ill say is that I think its important to recognize and value this conversational mode of knolwege bc it *is* ongoing, in a culture that doesnt really acknowledge or value it. All people who practice in science-dominanted fields are using conversational knowlege all the time, as far as I can tell. Medical professionals are not subscribing to a purely algorithmic decision making process: they still make judgement calls all the time and utilize large amounts of anecdote from other professionals (and hopefully, additional sources!) in order to make those calls. ESPECIALLY in outlier contexts. Im lucky enough to be in that room quite often. Insurance companies (in most of the us) and state-backed healthcare regulating bodies (in countries & states with socialized medicine) really, really would like medicine to be pure algorithm, ideally the most financially convenient algorithms. One of my dr friends, if you get them started, won't stop talking about the deskilling of medical providers and the attempt for both insurances and workplaces to remove variable, judgement-based practice from the equation. This is bad for effectiveness and Especially bad for those outliers, because higher degrees of specialization in disparate roles in a hospital prevent more holistic (as in, looking at the whole person in context) assessments and lets a lot of shit get missed; as well as having a lot less opportunity for providers to build knolwege that offers options to people with niche needs/understudied conditions.
I dont have nearly as intimate a window into other fields but the situation seems very similar when it comes to shit like ecology (and the relevant professions or roles).
So like, im not even posing "returning" to something that science has "replaced", and more saying that conversation is a fundemental part of knolwege that can exist with or without scientific studies and that acknowledging, valuing, participating in, and building strong effective practices for is of increasing importance as the forces that be ATTEMPT to dismantle it.
"these researchers published a paper on something that literally any of us could have told you 🙄" ok well my supervisors wont let me write something in my thesis unless I can back it up with a citation so maybe it's a good thing that they're amplifying your voice to the scientific community in a way that prevents people from writing off your experiences as annecdotal evidence

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IN WHICH you force spencer to help you with the only thing he doesn’t know about. makeup.
Tumblr media
the video of your makeup routine pops up on your phone, and you press the mic to record the voiceover, a smile on your face “go ahead baby…”
spencer braces himself, rolling his eyes “remind me why i agreed to do this again ?”
“because you love me, obviously” you answered with a shrug, and a tilt of your head.
“right. i do”
you gesture your hand towards your phone, signalling him to finally start talking. internally, you’re giggling, because you once again got him to indulge in your weird little activities he doesn’t know the first thing about.
“ahem, so… hi, hello everyone, whoever’s watching this video of my beautiful girlfriend making herself even more beautiful. i’m spencer… spencer reid - the boyfriend, and i’m supposed to explain what exactly she’s doing in this clip.”
you grin and give him a thumbs up, motivating him to keep going.
“so, she begins by washing her face with some fancy cleanser, which is very important because it maintains hydration, prevents breakouts, exfoliates and removes dead skin, - too many details ? right, sorry.”
he purses his lips when you glare at him, amused.
“then, she proceeds to use some serum, as well as eye cream and moisturiser, which surprisingly works wonders - don’t ask why i know, just… i know. and she also uses sunscreen, as all of you should because, well… it prevents aging and skin cancer.”
but then, the clip shows you opening your makeup bag, and his eyes widen a bit.
“uh, now’s the part where my IQ slashes to 60… this is uh… foundation ? oh no, that’s concealer to conceal blemishes and eye bags she doesn’t have - damn babe, i could use some of that too. now this is foundation ! she puts it on her hand for… some reason, and applies it with a brush… so, that’s kinda like painting-“
you facepalm yourself. painting ? really ?
“wait, why is this so dark ? oh, she’s drawing shadows with a stick… to try to make it look like her nose is tiny and her cheekbones are sharp… baby, you really don’t need that-“
okay, this was really getting amusing to watch, especially because he was analysing the video so carefully, his brows furrowed as he stared at the phone.
“glitter ! liquid glitter… on her cheeks. wait, that’s why you always look so glowy… gives her that ethereal look, you know ? i very much approve of the glitter. oh, and that’s blush. i know that too. but my favourite blush is the one she gets when i kiss her. or the one she’s got right now because i’m very much embarrassing her-“
he’s looking up at you, smiling like an idiot before you point back at the phone.
“right, sorry. i got distracted. baby, who’s even gonna watch that, seriously ? this is some fancy powder… i don’t exactly know what it’s for, but it originates from ancient egypt !”
“spence, come on”
“this is mascara, i know that too… woah, is that some kind of torture device ? hey, what are you doing to your lashes !”
you giggle, covering your mouth as he goes on about the lash curler.
“this is a pencil. for her lips. she uses it like twenty times a day, but i don’t know why. it tastes bad too. oh, and the lipgloss of course, couldn’t forget the lipgloss.”
his words are slowed down, because he’s too busy staring at your lips on the screen.
“uhm… and now she’s spraying something all over her face ? i’m guessing that means we’re done, damn, that was something. thank you for listening, i hope you enjoyed this video because i sure did - enjoy the video, not voiceovering it”
and with that, you take the phone from his hand, pressing the stop button. he lets out a relieved sigh, looking at you with puppy eyes. “how did i do ?”
“not bad at all, spence. but glitter, really ?”
of course, over the next few weeks, the girls at the BAU never stopped teasing him about it. jj kept calling him a “lovefool” and when emily asked penelope for her lash curler, they both warned him “careful, genius, we’ve got a torture device in the room”
okay, makeup may not have been the subject he mastered the most. but he was still glad he had complied and made the stupid video with you, because the smile that had formed on your face back then might have been the most precious thing he’d ever witnessed.
no makeup needed.

o mister lawyer of the internet do you have anything to teach us what do we say to a lawyer (or what do we do when we get one) how do you know if a lawyer is good or bad, and how much does it affect us what happens to the lawyer when you lose, or win -a very naive anon who wants more information
It is madam lawyer, I gotta slap my pronouns around here somewhere. (Ms./Mrs. feel bogus after you get called Madam Counselor enough times.)
Absolutely nothing happens to the lawyer. No matter how my clients cases go, I'm leaving the courthouse the same way I walked in, and I'm going to go sleep in a comfortable bed tonight in my safe home. Some people who try to be public defenders can't handle this, knowing that their clients are suffering while they aren't. Truth is, I need the sleep and the comfort and the safety to come through for the next client and the next and the next. I do my best not even to think about active work problems while at home (I think about them anyway).
If you get a lawyer, especially an appointed lawyer, CALL THEM. Do not wait for them to call you, because they have piles of cases and plenty to do. Don't be scared to be a little annoying, because they work for you. Leave a few messages, if they have administrative staff then make an appointment and show up for it. Best way to get a lawyer's attention is to be right in front of them when their schedule says to pay attention to you.
Whether a lawyer is good or bad will absolutely change everything. Lazy idiot attorneys just move their clients towards pleas. Energetic attorneys who litigate issues get a reputation for it, and they get better offers.
How you know a lawyer is good or bad is a pretty hard question to answer. There are a lot of things that make a lawyer good: they could be intensely well-researched, they could have an impeccable reputation that causes judges to listen to them when they make arguments, they could be from a locally-famous lawyer-judge-politician family which again causes judges to listen, they could be empathetic and good with client counseling. There are a ton of ways to be a good lawyer, and a ton of styles for being a good lawyer.
In general, a good lawyer will make you feel better after the interview than you did before. You'll have a good idea what the possible consequences could be and what the vague shape of some paths forward might be. You'll feel empowered in the sense that you'll know at least the important decisions are in your hands.
But those things are pretty easy to tell in the moment. Some more subtle red and.green flags that you might not know to look for are:
The lawyer pauses to look something up: GREEN FLAG. It's easy to mistake this for a red flag (lawyer doesn't know what they're doing!) but this is a sign of caution and thoroughness. Lawyers have to remember a lot, and the best know that they don't know everything.
The lawyer promises you results: RED FLAG. The lawyer is not in charge of the outcome and doesn't get to make the call. Weird shit happens in court all the time. No one making promises about the overall outcome can be trusted.
Lawyer won't give you a straight answer to your fucking question: completely neutral flag. Some questions don't have straight answers and lawyers love to say "maybe."
The lawyer makes some remark about the tendencies of the particular judge/prosecutor: most likely green flag. That lawyer is paying attention to their court and how it does things.
Lawyer is impatient and hard to connect with. Neutral flag. One of the most impatient attorneys with trouble with attorney/client relationships in the office is one of our best trial attorneys, and they get a lot fewer complaints after they win.
Shitty suit: Neutral flag. They should look put together, yes, but what a pain in the ass to put together a whole wardrobe of suits, much less GOOD suits.
Hitting on you: extremely red flag and possible ethical violation.
The rest is pretty easy to figure out on the fly.
As for what to tell them... confidentiality is absolutely real and very serious. The lawyer is not allowed to tell anyone else what you tell them. But some lawyers have different styles on what they ask. I'd say follow their cue, answer what they ask, but don't bury the lede, make sure to tell them the most crucial details. Bring documentation of stuff: text messages, screenshots, even diary entries. ER discharge notes. School transcripts. Whatever. Lawyers love documentation.
Honestly, I have so many great public defenders hanging around this blog, y'all can probably add some good stuff.

Hi there! I wanted to ask you, if it's alright, how you usually go about finding such beautiful nature to photograph?
For example, do you travel to specific locations to find specific wildlife? How long do you usually have to wait and search before finding these critters?
I've been trying to learn more about animal photography, doing it myself for a few years now, but I always wonder if I'm doing it right--thoughts like "do other photographers sit quietly crouched in the bushes for an hour waiting for that one bird to land again, or is it just me?" often pop in to my head 🤣
I'm blessed with large untouched fields bursting with life around my home, so I'd like to learn how to utilize this to the fullest extent and capture that beauty in my photos!
I apologize for writing so much, I truly appreciate your time reading all this. Please know that you're such an inspiration to me, and I always look forward to admiring what you share next!
Wishing you a wonderful day ☺️💗
Hi!
And thank you so much for your kind words – they truly mean a lot! And no need to apologise for writing “so much” – I loved reading your message.
Your questions really resonate with me, and to answer the most important one first: no, it’s definitely not just you crouching in the bushes waiting for that one bird to return! I do that too – a lot.😄Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. But either way, I still get to spend time in nature, which is always rewarding in itself.
Like you, I’m lucky to live surrounded by nature – forests, meadows, lakes. Over the years, I’ve got to know my local area very well. I know where the deer tend to pass, where the snakes (my beloved grass snakes/snokar!) like to bask in the sun, what kind of bush a certain bird might choose for its nest, or where to sit quietly if I want to spot a vole. Knowing the habits of wildlife really helps – so my biggest piece of advice is: learn your subjects. If you know what they eat, how they behave, and what habitats they prefer, you’ll start to get a sense of where (and when!) to look.
Time of day matters too – early morning is usually your best bet. It’s when many animals are most active, and the light is often beautiful. But I’m sure you already knew that. Hopefully, you’re a morning person – I’m definitely not! But hey, the things we do for the things we love, right? 😉
Patience is key. I don’t always hide, although that can help sometimes. Often I just sit still and let the animals get used to me. Many birds will tolerate your presence if you move slowly and show you’re not a threat. That said, a good zoom lens helps – but don’t worry too much about getting close-ups. Photos that show an animal in its environment can be just as striking as tight shots.
And one more thing that can’t be said enough: never disturb the animals, especially during nesting season. No photo is worth that cost.
I’m not an expert – just a happy amateur who happens to live for nature. But I hope some of these thoughts are helpful. Enjoy your photography – but most of all, enjoy the beauty that’s already right outside your door. Sounds like you're in a wonderful place to do just that.💛
Wishing you many quiet, wild, and magical moments to come!
