a friend asked me if i have any "skrunklies" and i went "hmm, i'm not sure i do? i definitely have blorbos" and she went "wait, what's the difference?" so i explained that skrunklies are generally wet and pathetic blorbos

her: "so blorbo is the rectangle [general category] and skrunkly is the square [special case]"

me: "yeah i think so"

her: "so how do babygirls fit into this?"

reader, this is the friend who originally introduced me to the daredevil tv show, all the way back in like 9th grade. forgetting this, i thought of @saecookie and said "well, matt murdock is the prototypical babygirl"

her: "...you are gonna need to explain that right now"

Kindrie Settles In!

this one's from the vampire au! takes place just after this one. which, fun fact, is still named in my google drive "can it be? all three kids in a room together?"

Kindrie was comfortably warm and lying on something soft. This was sufficiently strange that he woke up all the way out of sheer confusion.

He was in pain, but it was a background sort of pain, a deep full-body ache rather than any stabbing warnings. He blinked up at an unfamiliar wooden ceiling. Slowly, moving only his eyes—better not to do move his neck until he’d remembered how he’d gotten here—he looked around the rest of the room. 

He was on a soft, luxurious bed, under clean white sheets. Cold fear coiled in his stomach at the realization—whatever that meant, it couldn’t be good. He was on a large bed in a spacious room, with a low bedside table to one side and a landscape painting on the opposite wall. The walls were white plaster, old-looking in a way Kindrie couldn’t really put his finger on, while the ceiling was the same dark wood as the only door. None of it was familiar. None of it was in the style of any of the Randir estates.

But, he remembered in a rush, he didn’t belong to the Randir anymore. He belonged to the Knorth.

WIP Wednesday Game

alright folks we’re going again! this was a resounding success last week, aka I ended up getting SO much writing done, so once more with feeling!

Here’s how it works:

In a reblog (or new post w/ rules attached), post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.

Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to post!

After you’ve posted, people can send you an ask with one of your file names. You must then write 3 sentences in that file. If the filename is one you can’t share from (for example, an event fic), write 3 sentences on it anyway, and then 3 more on another to share.

I’m rewatching 2x06 “The Top Hat Job” right now and they literally reveal that Parker used to be scared of the dark, but she got over it by locking herself in a large chest and having other kids bury it in the ground (on YouTube check out time stamp 17:59-18:27 for the full scene, 18:14-18:20 for the specific flashback).

It’s clearly written as one of those little funny one-off moments to establish that she is neurodivergent was a weird kid and is a weird adult. And one could wonder if her recollection is subject to hyperbole or distortion. But one of the joys of fandom is making connections the writers never intended or even realized. Taking that memory into account, what is Parker’s internal monologue during the giffed scene above? How does this past event recontextualize her reactions to what Hardison goes through?

sae the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is a comfort movie for you???

admittedly i've never watched it but. isn't it a very famously creepy movie?

so uhm ahem. what becomes a comfort movie to me can be wild. it truly kind of never has anything to do with the STORY itself. Well iin a way the story can contribute but to the VIBES.

I can't make the anatomy of a comfort movie to me, but i can try: it's about the fact that it's really a very good movie; it has to have steady pacing (no big rush or slow down), always bringing in new elements to focus on; it's gotta be a bit intense, and also the way i first saw it plays a huge role. (that's why unfortunately ponyo isnt on the list: it should have been but first viewing wasnt particularly memorable i guess). anyway Silence of Lamb is a perfect movie. yes it's creepy.

it is going nowhere but, for you, I have pried out a few more sentences:

Harrington offered her a hand up. Robin took it, beet-red, and let him pull her to her feet. It might have been better if he’d still been stammering out apologies, but instead he had a sort of ‘yikes’ look on his face that made Robin want to die. The curly-haired kid had his head tilted at a really weird angle. Robin didn’t realize it was because he was trying to read the cover of her book until his eyes went wide and he exclaimed, “Is that a treatise on linguistic theory?” Robin shoved the book behind her back, but it was too late. “It is!” the kid crowed.

I've decided Regency-era Robin is really into lingustics. This'd be the early 1800s/1810s-ish, and I'm not fussed about historical accuracy bc this is a Regency romance, we're discreetly ignoring most of an entire Napoleonic War happening just over there, but it was in 1786 that William Jones gave a talk to the Asiatic Society proposing a common ancestor for Sanskrit, Latin, Greek, and several other languages, absolutely rocking Europe's world wrt linguistic theory. So, you know, we're including that.

However, I have only a casual knowledge of all this, and wikipedia has told me several interesting fun facts (he wasn't the first to propose such a theory! he was technically less correct than previous such theorists bc he included a few languages not within the proto-indo-european umbrella!), all the subsequent relevant works it mentions are post-1820, and that's too late for this ambiguously set fic.

I could go on some kind of deep crawl into what linguistic theories were being bandied about twenty years after William Jones gave his talk, but instead I think I'm going to just run with what wikipedia has to say and make some stuff up.

HI HI HI I'm trying to do this as fast as i can because i don't want to leave it till tomorrow so here we go.

they call her mama cj you KNOW how i feel about this. cj is not an absent parent, she is their mom through and through and they move in together because they know that's what they both want for the kids, hard as it may be for their gay little hearts.

cj does not propose, because she's never been married to andy and this isn't how she wants to do it. but they live together and lines are blurred and... they're happy, eventually.

in this universe, regardless of what different people believe happened in canon (because i don't even know what i believe), cj was the leak. toby confessed so the kids wouldn't lose their mom, and because he feels guilty for his part in it. andy and cj know exactly why he did it and the president does too, and that's part of why he gives toby the pardon. losing toby would be no better than losing a parent for the kids, anyway.

cj and andy are amazing parents. they take huck and molly out to ice cream and they teach them about how the world should be and they love them with everything they have in their hearts. they give toby a special day with the kids because he will always be family, no matter how the three of them feel about each other.

this is super random and super sad but. you know cj's gun control speech in... s1 i think. yeah. in this au it HURTS. like yes that's before she has the kids but having kids opens her eyes to the pain in a completely different way. she can't imagine sending the twins to school without fighting as much as she possibly could to keep them safe. this goes for andy too, as well, they both become even bigger gun control advocates, but something about this arc for cj makes me extremely :'(.
