Elena met Paul Smecker while undercover as a Russian escort in New York City. Following an FBI raid on the Russian mob’s ecstasy ring, she had been detained with the other girls working that night. She kept her cover going, speaking nothing but fluent Russian as the federal agents handcuffed her. The accent continued to fall from her mouth as Smecker tried to interrogate her. But then he asked, in Russian, “How did you get that bruise on your cheek?”

She didn’t say anything, just looked down at her hands, her wrists turning red from the metal rubbing her skin raw. “A little bird tells me it’s snowing in Moscow,” Smecker added, and Elena shot her eyes up at him. It was code, a signal that he knew about her, who she really was. “A sparrow,” he whispered, the Russian translation sounding like vorobey. Sparrow—her code name. 

The gold earrings arrived three years after his funeral, with the Russian translation of sparrow typed on a notecard, along with a date and time to be at the Church of Saint Christopher in Boston. There, Paul fucking Smecker appeared from the confessional booth to reveal he had faked his death and why. She cursed at him, much like she heard Eunice Bloom did later, but she quickly crossed herself and recited a Hail Mary. Smecker smiled, “That’s why I chose you, my Catholic sparrow.” She still called him a motherfucker after that.

“Fucking Smecker!” Connor and Murphy simultaneously cheer as they enter the office. 

Bloom approaches Elena as the men hug each other, her southern accent low and measured with a curious smile. “You told them, didn’t you?” Elena bites her lip, and Bloom beams with laughter. “Oh, of course you did.”

“Boys!” Smecker boasts like a proud uncle. “You have no idea how happy I am to see you two.”

The twins glance at each other and then back at Smecker, with Murphy sounding so incredibly relieved. “Aye, us too.”

Smecker shakes his head, placing his hands on his hips like always. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that whole fake out. I know you’ve had enough of the real thing lately.”

Elena studies the boys’ reactions respectively, hoping she is right in assessing their mental well-being. As Murphy nods in agreement, Connor swallows hard but still manages to mirror his brother’s nonverbal response. And then, without a word, they both sandwich Smecker in a long, tender hug. 

“Well, I can see where I stand in this little reunion,” Bloom teases, nudging Elena with her elbow. The boys look over at the two women, smiling as they both move to embrace Bloom with a chaste kiss on the cheek. “Y’all sure know how to make a woman feel appreciated,” she smiles, winking at Elena before turning her attention back to Connor and Murphy. “As much as I would love to catch up, we all have work to do. I’ll let Fucking Smecker explain everything, but first, I wanted to ensure you get these.” She hands them each a burner cell phone. “These will be how we’ll communicate with you now that payphones are not as common as they used to be.”

“Not to mention we can send encrypted text messages,” Smecker adds, winking at Elena. 

“Sometimes telling you to find a payphone,” Elena retorts, half laughing at how she’s had to communicate with Smecker for the past couple of months. 

Bloom laughs and waves both hands. “With that, I’ll leave you to it. Glad to have you boys back.” 

Connor and Murphy thank Bloom as she turns on her Christian Louboutins to leave. She whispers in Elena’s ear, “Come find me if you need to talk later.” While the sentiment is sweet, the statement leaves Elena confused and anxious about what’s coming next. 

As Bloom shuts the door, Smecker motions for Connor and Murphy to have a seat. He leans against the front of his desk, crossing one foot over the other as he looks through a file folder. “Your first target is a drug trafficking ring in New York City. Feds haven’t been able to get someone inside, and they haven’t been able to get enough evidence for a warrant, so this is perfect for you. Get in, take out the thugs, and we’ll tip off local law enforcement on the contraband left behind.”

The boys turn to each other and smile, almost giddy. “Sounds perfect,” Murphy exclaims. Connor nods and hums his agreement, briefly looking over Murphy’s shoulder to see Elena standing against the wall. 

Smecker looks incredibly pleased with himself. “Good. And Jensen will go with you.”

“What?” The adrenaline makes her feel lightheaded, and her face flushes with pure frustration. The boys echo the question as they fast stand up and join Elena in her standoff with Paul fucking Smecker. The three keep their eyes locked on him as they argue why she shouldn’t go.

“No, no, it’s gotta be just me and Connor,” Murphy pleads. 

“No, that’s not what I signed up for,” Elena protests.

“No, it’s too dangerous,” Connor attests.

All three of their voices overlap and rise in volume and anxious energy until they reach the boiling point of annoyance, forcing Smecker to yell. “Will you all just shut the hell up?” Elena, Connor, and Murphy stop, their jaws still hanging open like little kids getting in trouble. “This is not a negotiation. Jensen is going. Think of her as your…transition specialist.”

Elena glares at him. “You mean, ‘babysitter.’” The word falls out of her mouth, not realizing it, until Connor and Murphy turn their disapproving stares onto her. She rubs the bridge of her nose, wondering how she can explain what she really meant. Instead, she asks Smecker for his pack of cigarettes, then tosses it to Murphy. “Connor, Murphy…I need to speak with Smecker in private for a moment.”

Murphy looks at Connor, and the slight head nods, furrowed brows, and shifting eyes all add up to the twins speaking their silent language. Elena’s seen it before, specifically during that first therapy session at Hoag. It didn’t phase her then, and she’s not about to let it phase her now. And as irritated as she is by the whole situation, she’s really only trying to look out for them. She lowers her voice, almost begging the brothers to listen to her. “Please, go.”

The twins share another look between them, one of acceptance as Murphy lightly taps Connor’s arm with the back of his hand, motioning for them to leave as requested. While Murphy heads for the stairs, Connor hesitates, giving Elena a soft nod of reassurance despite his face looking so drained and unsure of anything. 

Elena takes a deep breath as the boys leave, shutting the door behind them. 

“What happened to your hand?” Smecker asks, his voice low and inquisitive. 

Elena rubs the bandage as she sits in one of the chairs across from his desk. The truth feels like a loaded answer. “I can’t do this, Paul.” She sinks deeper into the leather, feeling small and embarrassingly hopeless. “I’m only going to put them in danger.”

Smecker walks around his desk and pulls out a bottle of Jameson, pouring two glasses with his trademark smirk. “First of all, you’re not putting these boys in any more danger than they already are. They can take care of themselves.”

Elena rolls her eyes, remembering every time Connor and Murphy declared that sentiment during therapy. She lets out an exasperated breath. “The FBI brought me in for questioning though. They think I might be an accomplice.”

Smecker hands her the whiskey, tapping her glass before he takes a sip of his own. “I’m not convinced that the FBI is handling this ‘by the book,’” he adds, gesturing quotes with his fingers for added emphasis. “Who was it?”

She glares into her drink. “Fucking Walsh.”

“He’s always been a by-the-book type of law enforcement officer.”

“He’s an asshole,” she says with whiskey coating her tongue. 

“That, young lady, is an undisputed fact.” 

Elena chews on her thumb, thinking about a million different what-if scenarios. “You think he made me? Maybe my cover’s blown?”

“I know you don’t like hearing me say this, but I don’t know. I doubt it. Seems to me that Walsh might be after something else. If he genuinely thought you had something to do with the boys’ prison escape, he would have kept you in custody.” Smecker sips his whiskey, thinking long and hard about their situation. “That is, if he’s still ‘by-the-book.’” 

He sets the glass on his desk, running his finger over the edge like he’s searching for a warm tone to play. “That’s why I need you out there with them. Because if there’s something more insidious going on, I need you to find it.” 

She looks at Smecker, feeling the weight of what he’s asking her. This man who had pulled her out of that Russian club and then helped her seek revenge on the Nikolai fucker that beat her up. 

“The boys need you, vorobey.”

She takes a deep breath and throws the rest of the Jameson to the back of her throat. “Fuck.”

Happy whenever this finds you. For me it is a warm Tuesday morning in June and I did just notice my lavender is blooming. I am feeling a little overwhelmed. Not so much because I have a lot of things that must get done, but rather because I have so many things I want to do. I have so many half finished projects and even more ideas for new ones. I have the surge of creativity in my veins this morning and I was a bit sad that I felt like because I have to work, I could not honor that. But Lavender is always about taking a breath. For me anyway. Lavender is one of those herbs that always has a place in my yard, in my medicine, and at my altar. I did draw this card in reverse, which in this deck (The Herbal Astrology pocket oracle) is about feeling unfocused, or overwhelmed. It is also about what the book calls "lack mentality". I struggle with that. I know in my logic brain that I have abundance. I do. I have what I need, when I need it, and then some. In some ways I am beyond wealthy. I have a loving connected family. I have enough books to be considered a library, and much much more. But because of my past with both poverty and abandonment, that lizard part of my brain (I call him Eunice) sometimes gets greedy. Not for material things. Unless those are books. Eunice often thinks that something is missing, and in that thought, will scramble to fill what is "missing" with random bits of flotsam and jetsam. Nothing of substance. That is my lack mentality. Even though I lack for nothing. Today Lavender is here to remind me to stop and literally smell the flowers. Lavender as an herbal medicine is a nervine and therefor is excellent for calming Eunice. Lavender tea is delightfully soothing. Today is enough. Needs are met. Wants are just that...wants. Once upon a time, in a land where the sun shone like a golden orb and the moon bathed the world in silver light , there was a forest. This forest was a living symphony of nature, with trees that reached for the sky like giants, their leaves rustling like whispered secrets in the breeze. The forest floor was a lush carpet of moss and ferns, speckled with flowers that bloomed like little stars scattered across the earth.

(The animals lived in harmony and the birds sang and songs that were as sweet as nectar)

(Then one day a storm rolled in the sky darkening with clouds that were as menacing as a dragon's  breath)

Botany of Orsterra (From OT1 and CotC)

The list of foods and cuisines is proving really useful in my writing, so I thought I'd do the same with the plantlife of CotC's Orsterra, too. I'm missing quite a few because I can't review certain Traveller Stories, but I've got a few from notes and the like, and there's a fair bit from NPC dialogue in the various towns.

This is very much a work in progress!

There isn't as much as I thought there would be, since I was only wanting to include Orsterran-specific plants, rather than generic ones like roses or pine trees, unless a specific variety is mentioned in the story.

I haven't checked the memoirs yet either, but I'll be adding to this post every time I find some (or I find Traveller Stories to review on youtube), so thank goodness for the ability to edit here!

I'm adding anything I find from the original Octopath Traveler as well, since it's all part of Orsterra.

Anyway, without further ado, the list:

Various: Blue Hydrangea {Master of Fame}, Crimson Devilbloom (M) {Ashlan's Tale} A presently illegal medicinal herb, and no-one knows where it grows, although it's been studied in Atlasdam so it may originate there. Thanks to @hazelgatoya for that one! Also, thanks to @theynanigans again for finding the mention in Isla's letters, too: "Day 361: Crimson Devilbloom - "The sickly secretions of that plant cause thinking to take meow-mentous ef-fur-t."

Theatropolis: Lapisleaf (B) {Eunice’s Tale}. Contains a pigment that creates a vivid blue, used in painting. (Edited to add) According to Isla: “When the nectar of these flowers is mixed with pigment, it changes into a striking blue colour. This was a closely guarded secret among painters of old, but researchers eventually discovered this characteristic fur the whole world to know.”

Theatroshroom (E) {??Can’t remember where this one came from??} Apparently, they're very tasty. Edited to add - they're from Adelle's Tale. Thank you, @theynanigans!

Atlasdam: None mentioned.

Rippletide: None mentioned.

Grandport: Quatrait blooms (NPC Woman from Quaragosa) (E) Apparently this can be stewed with fish to create a tasty dish. THe blooms themselves are apparently sweet-scented.

Emberglow: Embershrooms (E), used in a variety of dishes. Frostfern (M) {Miles’ Tale}, a compound for a remedy used by the Knights Ardante. Snow Crystals (B) {Sofia’s Tale} These rare flowers gave their name to Snowshard Grotto, where they bloomed. As humans and monsters came and went from the cave, the flowers eventually went extinct. Grace Mushrooms (M) {Rodion’s Tale}, the spores of which are used in a remedy. Cave Mint (M) (E) {Shelby’s Tale}. Shelby's favourite herb, and apparently it can be brewed into a tasty tea. More info from Isla's Letters again: "Day 286: Cave Mint - "Do you know which herb can grow in even the darkest caves, and is useful as an ingredient in both food and medicine? Why, it's cave mint, of course! Hmm… I think next time I have afternoon tea with my cait fur-ends, I'll use cave mint to make tea." Thanks to Theynanigans for finding this!

Frostlands: Züsbaum (E), Per one of Isla’s letters, it grows in the Frostlands and its leaves have a sweet flavour. A tea made from them has a taste distinct from sugar. Many monsters love them, so picking the leaves is a monumental challenge, but many say it is worth the risk.

Also from the Frostlands: Snowstalks (B), a plant that grows in the plains near Emberglow. By soaking cloth in their sap, it can be used to make clothes that are warmer and better against cold conditions. Soaking cloth in the sap of Snowstalks makes it very soft, and will keep people dry. It’s also Lulu’s favourite.

Cathedral of Tytos: None mentioned.

Cragspear: Adorablooms (B) {Main Story}, Apple Blossoms (M) (B) {Therion’s Tale} Spoilers for Therion's Tale, but IIRC Apple Blossom was used in a perfume that helped to control/charm people. Might have different properties in Orsterra.

Valore: White Grape Blossoms (B) {Main Story} A flower sold in Valore, and of great significance to Bargello. Has no medicinal properties that we know of. Wyrmwood (M) {Millard's Tale}, a plant that grows around Valore, and is used in medicine.

Also Valore: Vermiliweed Blossom (B) Features in the main story. "A flower that flourishes in the Woodlands. Contrary to its adorable appearance, it is poisonous and used to hunt wild boars."

Sufrataljah: Drizzleshrooms (M) {Soleil’s Tale}, King Cactus Meat (M) {Soleil’s Tale} Both used in remedies. Drizzleshrooms were boiled with something by a Sunshade tribe to create a remedy, and King Cactus meat is bitter but can bring down Desert Fever.

Victors Hollow: None mentioned.

Sunshade: None mentioned.

Shepherds Rock: Nothing in the area is poisonous, according to Merrit's Tale. Antidock grass grows in the Highlands, and is medicinal (used to make antidotes for poisons.) Also known as Noxroot in other areas of Orsterra. Ephemera is a plant with distinct leaf patterns and purple flowers, and the use is medicinal. (powder from the stems can be used in first aid, and it can be dissolved in hot water to make a cold remedy.) Info again from the wonderful @hazelgatoya!

Berecain: None mentioned.

I’cirlo: Panacea Herb (M) (E) {Former Edoras Ambassador}

Clearbrook: Bellflower (M) {Rita’s Tale} Possibly contains different properties in Orsterra, but I need to review Rita's Tale to see if anything different is mentioned. From Isla's Letters: "Day 312: Bellflower - "Have you ever seen an herb with bell-shaped petals blooming by the riverside? Its characteristics change slightly depending where it grows, so only ex-purr-ienced botanists can identify them!" Credit to Theynanigans!

Redleaf Grass (M). {Penny's Tale} Has bright red leaves, and grows along the rivers in Clearbrook. Waterweed (M) {Rita's Tale, but also mentioned in Hayes' Tale}. Grows along the Clearbrook Traverse, and has bright blue petals. Used in medicinal salves. Isla's letter mentions it as well, as something to use if you get hurt. Laurel Seed Oil (M) {Rita's Tale}. Alfyn uses it to take the scent of tallow away from his salve. "Laurel leaves have a pain relieving compound, and the oil made from their seeds can cool down feverish patches," Rita says.

Edit: From Largo's Traveller Story, we have Blue Poppy (B), a flower that is highly attractive to monsters, Slumbersage (M), a plant with a sedative nature, and Sungrass (B), a plant that Shaggy Meeps like to graze on.  From Isla’s letters: Slumbersage is purr-fect for making medicine to help people sleep, but it’s difficult to get the dosage correct, so don’t try without an apothecary present.

Arte Shrooms (M), from Dorothea’s Traveller Story. When processed, they are both the cause and cure of an illness in Shepherds Rock. They are both tasteless and odourless.

From Cornelia’s Traveler Story: Snowrosea (M), found in the depths of the Cave of Laments. Can be used as a remedy for Frostlung when infused into a tea. Stilldrop (M), "a powerful herb that grows near the village of Stillsnow. A small dose has the power to cure all sorts of illnesses, but frequent use can lead to a condition similar to Frostlung." It has a sweet scent.

River Beans (E) Phaseolus Lunatus - Lima beans!

From Lemaire's Traveler Story: Phantom Flowers. (B) They grow on the North Theatropolis Plains, and appear a dull grey colour until it rains, when they gain a sheen similar to that of a rainbow.

From Ogen's Traveler Story: Mugwort. An actual plant with many uses, from culinary to medicinal.

From Emberflame Story pt 4: Lumiflower. One of the rabbits wants nectar from a Lumiflower, which grows in the West Valore Countryside.

They also want a Bestiodor Mushroom, which grows by the Great Tree's Tears. When combined with lumiflower nectar it creates a pungent odour that attracts monsters.

Gaborra Evergreen: From the original OT. "A flowering plant native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the continent of Gaborra known for it's antipyretic properties. A constituent compound has been known to cause inflammation and swelling of the throat, inducing severe coughing. The symptoms resemble those of the whooping cough known to plague the land whence it hails. Due to the risk of severe and adverse reactions, use of Gaborra evergreen in any dosage is strongly discouraged."

Herb-of-grace: From the original OT. A plant that grows deep in the heart of the Whitewood in the Frostlands, and so rare that botanists thought it extinct. It is rumoured to ward off the curse of petrification.

Waterbloom flowers: From the original OT. A flower beloved by Mercedes and Zeph, possibly resembling a type of forget-me-not that grows around lakes and rivers.

Mind-me-always: (From the original OT) The favourite flowers of Ogen's wife. An extremely rare flower that only blooms on high mountains. "In the language of flowers, they represent a reunion. They mean 'I will meet you again.'"

Lion's Ear and Sweet Wormwood: (From the original OT) A dash of each of these makes all salves better, according to Alfyn.
