i'm not gonna SAY I think Mikey and Donnie would join the brotherhood because they don't want to wait for a world to feel safe enough to accept their loved ones, but I'm just saying

Mikey has watched his father scrounge and fight and work himself to exhaustion just to help them all survive for YEARS and he watches how despite all that work his father does they still can't have everything that splinter wants them to but he tries so HARD to do it. He sees how Leatherhead can never get the help he needs for his mental help after spending most of his life being tortured by the kraang but just bc of how they all look they're forced to live off of scraps in the shadows in fear for their lives while humans can seemingly do no wrong in their own society. Mikey thinks it's unfair and he's such a deeply caring and loving person and what if that's what pushes him into an extremist POV?

His father should be able to exist as he is now, rat or man. his boyfriend should be allowed to get the mental help he desperately needs for his PTSD. His brothers should be acknowledged for how often they risk their lives saving a world that doesn't want them. he thinks the world is such a wonderful place and so many different things about it make it that way, and it makes him so angry that humans can't seem to accept that because of blind hatred to anyone they see as different as them. It's just not fair to him and he wants things to be fair for his family. why should his family nearly die saving the world for humans who don't consider them worthy of life?

and Donnie? Donnie wants his family to be safe and he doesn't think any humans would ever want the same thing. he's seen the things the EPF does to mutants and it's like they're being treated as the enemy because of what they are perceived as instead of what they are and it infuriates him. He thinks about all the times his brothers almost died, how he almost died, all for a world that doesn't want them to exist. It's an emotionally charged conclusion and maybe too broad of a generalization about humans (Casey and April are right there, after all) but he thinks about every time him or his brothers got sick when they were kids and how he always knew it was worse than their father said because they didn't have medicine or a doctor. it's why he knows so much medical stuff now, because he watched Leo writhing in pain from shell rot when they were children and he couldn't stop thinking about what would happen if he died. he smells the stench of rot when he shuts his eyes and there's still a scar on his plastron.

he doesn't think his family will be safe in a world where humans are in charge, if the EPF exists and if the kraang aren't the sole bad guy in the mutant conversation he thinks that the world will always be the same way. he doesn't think humans are smart enough to make those changes so he figures the only way his family would be safe would be if the humans who didn't want them alive would be out of the way somehow.

so hypothetically if an old ass man with a silly helmet comes along, and the turtles fight him alongside a brand new group of mutant allies they made? they might hear him out while he gives the usual bad guy speech. he's defeated and taken to prison.

Mikey might go into his lab later, and they both sit in silence together. Mikey picks up a couple of little paper clips, and glances at Donnie. They're close, and Donnie doesn't always know how to read people but he can read Mikey. Mikey isn't people, he's Mikey, and Donnie picked up a couple paper clips too.

he shakes his head and takes out a box of staples and starts to break them up into smaller chunks to slide under their knee and elbow pads. he had surgical staples in his leg, they wouldn't be detected because of those.

Mikey smiles at him, because he's glad Donnie is with him. Donnie thinks that's silly, because he'd never not be with Mikey.

they're brothers.

I've been studying character design for a while, and the ones I struggle with the most are the villains.

Because, plain and simple, I don't understand what characteristics create that prejudice in the public, that they see them and instantly say "okay, that's the bad guy".

So I thought: I need less pressure, make drawing fun again!... Let's practice with our favorite franchise! The ninja turtles.

And that's where I found A Mixed Bag and the Swap Turtles

"The Alignment-Swap Universe (or, Swapverse) is an original turtle 'verse in which pretty much all character's alignment is swapped. So the TMNT of this universe are evil, whereas Shredder and Krang are good guys out to stop them from menacing the citizens of New York."

I just LOVE Mikey's characterization in this universe. He is so unintimidating and so dangerous.

Mikey was my first choice because, truth be told, I was intrigued by the kind of villain he is. The kid is an entity of chaos trapped in the body of a turtle, I don't know what the hell he's capable of and that terrifies me to no end but he's so charismatic. I just love every dialogue of him.

And the appearance of someone like that was a challenge…

I took Halloween pumpkins, Harley Quinn's classic look and put them in a blender with a teenage skater whose brain plays music 24/7. AND BAM! Swap Mikey's look.

Some details:

The forked tongue is in honor of the Dark Turtles from 2003, the first evil turtles I met, Mikey's counterpart had this long chameleon tongue and I wanted to give something similar to my boy.

The stop sign and danger tape are to represent hes nature as the team's "wild card" and along with the triangles throughout the design express danger.

The few circles are to give an illusion of tenderness and softness. Yk, because he's the heart

(What else?)

He has a pendant that was going to be two M's but in the end I reduced it to just one

The smile scar was originally going to be one side only

Those colored balls are actually bombs

He has star stickers

Just thinking about your sep au so I hope you don't mind the ramble. Thinking about how Mikey who definetely had gone through a lot already, helping anyone and everyone he could, probably developed a kind of savior complex. I would imagine this was dealt with because Big Mama has money and she would save no expense on therapy for her little turtly boo(s), so of course by the time Mikey meets his brother's, he's probably gotten pass a lot of his old bad habits of needing to be the savior and needing to help and probably learnt to talk to his parents whenever he was feeling down, especially when said parents are overprotective and definetely insisted on it. Now I just imagine, of course, feeling like he needs to care for his brothers takes a toll. Especially during situations like Donnie snapping at him, which Mikey knkows wasn't his fault! Mikey doesn't blame him at all but it still hurt, and Mikey learnt to acknowledge it and so goes to one of his parents to talk about it like he normally would. But Donnie overheard the conversation. Donnie has paranoia and he knows that the three parents are over protective of Michael and I just imagine Donnie freaking out, thinking that he might end up kicked out or something. He was always expecting some sort of betrayal afterall, his mind likes to wander. Of course Mikey finds out, and I just imagine this would be the start of Mikey spiraling down. He would talk less and less about what bothered him, in fear it would end up triggering his brothers. He doesn't want that, he wants his brothrs okay and they need him more than he needs them, Mikey's the okay brother afterall! And quietly, Mikey still hadn't shaken off the feeling that he was less important than those around him. Especially now that he has brothers who are "more traumatized" than he is. Anyways, that's all I have rn. Sorry if I get anything wrong!

Mikey is one of those people that tries to help anyone and everyone around him. And unfortunately, that does lead to some self-sacrificial tendencies.

And Dee reacting like that? Totally. The paranoia that he'll mess up and the repercussions for doing so weighs on him constantly, and snapping at his baby brother? He definitely feels like he's finally accomplished that.

In his mind, the best case scenario is that he'll be kicked to the curb, discarded like junk.

But after everything that happened with Kendra and the Purple Dragons, he's absolutely terrified of what he sees as the much more likely outcome. . .

. . . and this parental trio?

It's not like they don't know how to get rid of a body.
