i finally "beat" the game with all the characters in Exit the Gungeon! (I still have yet to beat the real boss of the game)
Tumblr media
This run was chaotic as hell and I thought it couldn't get any crazier... Then I got the Clone in a chest and it got WILD, the Robot really wanted to get out and caused absolute mayhem doing it

Thanks to recorded footage coming out from House of Gundead, was gathering info that goes with existing entries and some interesting stuff for both the Blobulonian empire and Hegemony of Man came up. More importantly, the gungeon itself. Here's a basic timeline of events.
Wizard sees the rise of firearms and fears they would make magic obsolete, so he starts experimenting with fusing magic with this new technology. He creates a dungeon on the planet Gunymede.
Hires a gunsmith who brings his daughters, one training to become a smith like him, with him to the planet and they both begin working on something beyond a firearm, a gun that could kill the past, giving someone a second chance to correct their greatest regret. When finished, The Great Bullet strikes the dungeon, killing the wizard.
The Great Bullet converts the dungeon into the gungeon and thus the gundead start appearing. Many worship Kaliber, goddess of bullets and guns, and some even receive her blessing. During this time, the Wizard returns as a Lich, trapped in bullet hell but recognized by the gundead as the master of the gungeon.
Word breaks about what happened to the dungeon, but more importantly, word spreads across the universe about the gun that could kill the past and many flock for the opportunity for a second chance. What they don't know is the gungeon is cursed. Once you enter, you cannot leave without killing your past and by extension, your reason for being at the gungeon. Even death is no escape as the time of your journey into the gungeon is killed and you are returned to the start. Only complete loss of hope leads to a true death.
The starting gungeoneers arrive at the gungeon for a variety of reasons and venture down and free plenty of people imprisoned by the gundead and start gathering ingredients to craft the bullet to kill the past. They deliver the parts to the gunsmith's daughter, having become a fully fledged blacksmith.
They kill their pasts but are yet still trapped in the gungeon. A cloud of space and time appears somewhere in the gungeon and one gungeoneer lets it flow into them and they continue onwards. This unlocks the paradox, a living temporal anomaly.
The paradox kills its own past which brings the Wizard forth from the past. He ventures through his own dungeon his future self is the master of. He encounters the blacksmith and receives the Bullet. He tries to kill the past which is his future. He is sent to bullet hell where he is forced to confront his future self alongside a glitched, paradoxical copy due to how he is killing his future.
With the Wizard's future killed, the gun that can kill the past is never made, the great bullet never falls, and the gungeon doesn't exist, and the Wizard casts his gun into the waters before his dungeon.
However the gungeon still exists, damaged from all the previous killed pasts, with its own existence undone being the deathblow. The gungeon begins the crumble and collapse in in itself as everyone tries to escape.
So there's that, but house of the gundead add something a bit extra to the mix.
Detective is sent into the gungeon to rescue a kidnapped political figure with the super space turtle, a companion from both previous games, who is stated to have escaped from the gungeon before. Also said political figure is killed by the Convict in her past.
They venture in and after going through and eventually rescuing said political figure, they escape the once again collapsing dungeon and fly off the planet when Gunymede itself just fucking explodes.
See the issue? This new entry has someone that should be dead being rescued, the gungeon seemingly not collapsed, the turtle having already escaped with that being from Exit the Gungeon, and the planet itself blowing up at the end. A tricky puzzle piece that fits nowhere and might as well be from a different puzzle entirely. Put it before and the planet exploding becomes an issue. Put it after and the gungeon existing becomes an issue. Put it during and super space turtle having escaped and being outside the gungeon becomes an issue. It's fascinating

They should invent a button that lets you swap aspects of things, if only so I can fix mistakes make by the gaming industry.
Swap it around so Borderlands 3 has a story at the level of Borderlands 2 while still having the superior combat. Swap it around so that a VN with a story I adore has the production value of a VN I'm a bit more eh on. Switch it up so that Shadows Over Loathing has an actually good ending more akin to the first game. Change it around so that every time Dave the Diver wanted to make a fat joke, it didn't. Swap out Exit the Gungeon for a game that isn't... fucking terrible, and make an actually good sequel to Enter the Gungeon.
tbh this was just an excuse to get out some niche gaming opinions lol

Enter the Gungeon is dodge rolling onto Android with online co-op
TL;DR Bullet hell titles Enter the Gungeon and Exit the Gungeon are coming to Android. Enter the Gungeon adds online co-op and exclusive new content. Release is expected later in the summer, but you can pre-register now. Fans of ultra-challenging bullet hell games are in for a treat, because Enter the Gungeon and Exit the Gungeon are officially coming to Android and iOS. The gun-tastic ports…

Dungeon Crawler Prototype Reflection
Out of all the genre's I've prototyped I think this dungeon crawler has the most potential for growth and experimentaion with different game mechanics. I also think I could create many different gameplay loops from this formula of going from room to room; basicallly if I took this prototype further I would have a lot of different routes to go down.
For example, I looked at Enter the Gungeon in my earlier research, and I could do something similar to that where every room is filled with unique enemies, collectables, bosses, etc.
But this has been done many times before, and this doesn't really interest me. I think I would rather use the procedural room generation to give a different challenge to the player: what if every room was a puzzle, or an obstacle course to navigate? In the case of the latter, I could even use the code I made in the endless runner to get a constant movement, and maybe let the player control the direction.
If I was to take this further I think a maze style game using these procedural rooms could be really interesting. The movement of the player could be locked to left/right/up/down, and the goal to be to navigate rooms until you find an "exit room" with a level transition in the middle.
This is an interesting concept to me, and I think the biggest challenge here would be to make sure the rooms mesh together well (eg. a room can't be blocked off despite having a doorway). I would also want to create rooms with less than 4 doorways and I may have to change the systems already in place for room generation to achieve this.
This concpet reminds me a of a mobile game, Tomb of The Mask:
youtube
This game has both an endless runner mode and a stage mode (shown in the video), but I'm more focused on individual stages here, because that's more akin to the idea I have. The player would have to navigate levels filled with smaller rooms, each with their own puzzles to solve. The rooms wouldn't exculsive to themelves either, a button pressed in one room could trigger a door in another that allows the player to progress.
Using the procedral room generation, I could see this idea ending up as a rougelike puzzle game which is a really interesting idea to me.
And finally, the last thing that I would consider when taking this game further is the state of the code. At the current point in the prototype there would be a lot of things that I would change/remove to align with my vision. This would take time and must be something I consider when making a plan for it.

Research: Bullet Hell Games
1.Vampire Survivors: This 2D Bullet hell game has the game loop of multiple types of creatures constantly spawning to try and kill you whilst the player has to kill them levelling up as they go. The player can then purchase upgrades once this happens and then the game loop repeats itself. The Unique selling point of this game is that it slowly introduces new enemies separately until it is physically impossible for the player to win.
youtube
2.Just Shapes and Beats: This game loop consists of the player trying to constantly avoid attacks in the form of various pink shapes, such as beams, bouncing waves, pulsating shapes, and bouncing circles. These attacks appear and move in rhythm to the music, with difficulty increasing the further players progress. The Unique selling point of this game is the use of music as a form of attack. This is something that I don't think I have ever seen in this style of game.
youtube
3.Cuphead: This Game loop uses Multiple bosses that the player/players have to make it through in order to keep their score going. This loop will continue until either one of them or both die creating a rather simple game loop. This is probably the unique selling point of the game as well.
youtube
4.Monolith: The game loop for this game has the player progress through a few levels, bouncing off of walls whilst killing enemies, encountering bosses and repeating the process. The unique selling point of this game is the level design and how it is drawn out. I find the 2d design sort or arcade game style and it looks really nostalgic.
youtube
5.Enter the Gungeon: This game loop consists of the player running through levels, gaining weapons and items, killing enemies/bosses and repeating the process like most of these games. It's unique selling point is probably it's use of everchanging weapons. Each hero is armed with an ever-changing weapon, ensuring that no two attempts to exit the Gungeon are the same.
youtube
6.Ikaruga: the game loop of this game uses enemies by bringing them in individually until it is pure chaos, this continues throughout the levels until the player encounters a boss once the boss is defeated the player can recover and go again. The interesting and unique selling point of this game would have to be the enemy bullets. As bullets come towards you, you'll notice that the bullets (and the enemies who shoot them) are either black or white—when bullets of the same polarity hit your ship, you won't receive any damage. With the touch of a button, you can swap polarities to absorb bullets and deal more damage to enemies of the opposite colour. Once you absorb enough energy, you can shoot off epic homing lasers.
youtube
7.Doom (2016): this FPS uses a game loop that allows the player to explore their surroundings, kill enemies, gain upgrades and weapons and move on to the nest section of the world. It's unique selling point would be the player character's main weapons. It's very rare that protagonists use weapons like chainsaws and I find this quite unique.
Tumblr media
8.Undertale: This game loop consists of the player making their way through the game whilst encountering mini games/ bosses where the bullet hell mechanics come into play. This is why this bullet hell is so unique. The use of minigames like protecting a point is so inventive.
Tumblr media
The main similarities about these games are the fact that they all use the same game loop of fighting enemies, gaining new weapons and abilities and repeating the process. They also use the same 2d style designs unlike game like ultra kill. The differences that these games have are that some of them use unique ways of attacking the player such as beats and shapes which uses music like sound waves that the player has to avoid. What makes this style of game successful is it's constant action keeping the player on their toes at all times.

here we are onto another week. I become yet older and those weird internet issues last week should at least be much improved. Shorter schedule though as I am celebrating with Tuba family this week as well. Iceberg is coming along nicely as well as I have expanded the number of entries and included some of exit the gungeon.
