(Extreme on-brand post incoming) Some translation discourse about Chainsaw Man's latest chapter right now - in English this scene is translated as "slut":
But in the original it is 痴女/Chijo:
Literally "dumb woman" but almost always today used to mean "female molester". So people are complaining that, particularly given that Asa was the initiator of the current sexual encounter in question, that this is an incorrect translation - her anger is more over being a violator than shame over her sex drive or whatever.
I don't think they are right about that - "slut" is the best translation of 痴女. It doesn't not mean 'molester', it is used for someone who actually does that, but that is comparatively rare - its primarily used more metaphorically for a "sexually aggressive woman". Here is a typical dictionary entry for the word, which includes this line:
色情におぼれ迷う女
"to lose oneself in lust". Because the idea of this molester is that it isn't some calculating predator or anything, it is that she is overcome by her emotions, unable to reign herself in, and thus crosses boundaries. Hence the word origin - "dumb woman", right? Sounds like a slut to me, pretty similar to how we use that term - even if it has no connotations of sexual assault in English.
Also this is just the culturally accepted translation of the word, I think that counts for something.
But I want to go deeper - after all, there are other words in Japanese that mean "slut", like パンコ/Panko - yes like-but-not-exactly the breadcrumbs let's not get distracted okay? So why use 痴女? Here, I am going to note that this is a manga, it's part of a specific culture. Maybe you've noticed that in eroge male media - even tame ones like harem shows - compared to western porn the men are pretty passive? They don't make a lot of stories of chads pulling chicks, it is nerds having alien space hotties throw themselves at him.
This definitely comes from wider Japanese culture, don't get me wrong (and I lack expertise there, lets not oversell myself), but it is definitely the case than in animanga a male passivity streak is just sort of embedded as the default. And you can see that in the use of 痴女 in the medium.
So let's run an experiment! Let's go to e-hentai, and find the first relevant result with that word in the title. Here we go:
カースト上位のあの子は実は淫乱ドスケベ痴女
"The girl in the top caste is actually a lewd, perverted chijo"
And yeah, its about a hot, popular teen girl being paid to fuck some guys who propositioned her. The fourth page literally includes a guy saying "I am so excited, this rules". He isn't being consent violated in the slightest, the fantasy that makes her a chijo is how eager and lustful she is.
Audiences read all this stuff and cross reference each other, like language does. Its a pretty common term in the space. None of the cultural focus is on the violation aspect, all of the cultural focus is on the desire, and it has added punch as a sort of shameful secret ("Popular girl is actually..."). It's just slightly confusing because there are undercurrents of default norms in the sexual language that we in English don't have. The default Japanese slut is 20% more aggressive, as it were.
Slut, therefore, is the correct term for a manga translation. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
#chainsaw man#Ash Eroge Studies Adventures#As always when it comes to the japanese I am not an expert so def welcome corrections from the speakers on this one

not to be that guy again, but i really do think it's wild how most foreign english schools seek out native english speakers with passports from english-speaking countries and prioritise them over anyone else. like, sure, i've been learning english since i was three, got a certificate that confirmed i was fluent when i was sixteen, graduated with honours after studying linguistics with a focus on the english language at university for four years, and got a celta certificate afterwards as well, but any motherfucker who happened to be born in fucking london or whatever is more qualified to teach english than me.
#some native english speakers don't even know how many tenses they have in their language like be serious#i understand why an expert who is also a native speaker is a better option than me but most of them aren't experts in the field at all#archer speaks

lore dump
Hel Stóisksdóttir: Daughter of Stóiskr Víðrinn “Stoick the Vast” b. 977 AD on Berk in the Barbaric Archipelago in the Norwegian Sea ♓︎
Languages spoken: Old Norse 🇳🇴 & Latin 🇻🇦 (later on: modern Finnish 🇫🇮 & English 🏴)
Typology: ISFP CS/P(B) FM-FiSeNiTe 4w5-7w6-1w9 sp/so expand↓
“Hel is the daughter of Stoick, chief of the tribe which inhabits the Isle of Berk, canonically known as the Hooligan tribe. She takes after her father with thick, wavy auburn hair and a muscular figure with a height of 6’0”. However, her views differ from his on how humans ought to treat dragons.”
I refuse to directly kill dragons or animals myself, even if it just means others will do it instead, because I don’t like the way it makes me feel. Other tribespeople dislike me because of this, but I do other things with my time to “pitch in” so that I’m not a “freeloader.” I’m quite a loner, foraging and cooking for myself overwhelmingly so that I’m not seen as a burden. In 993 AD at age 16, my life changes when I find a wounded dragon in the forest that one of my people hit. It’s the demonic and infamously elusive “Night Fury.” I intuitively follow a pang in my heart that tells me to be kind to it, bond with it.
Dragon: Night Fury “Ánteðr” (Toothless)

S/O: Ville Valo; b. 1976 AD, Helsinki 6’1” ♏︎
Dragon: Devilish Dervish “Piikkilanka” (Barbed wire)
In 997 AD, my tribe travels by sea to mainland Scandinavia and we explore the lands with no insidious intentions, meeting people along the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas. Around the area of modern-day Helsinki, I find myself separated from the others. Wandering, I find a cave with a portal that I walk through curiously, presently finding myself 1,000 years in the future. I figure as much, and try not to draw too much attention but I stick out in my clothing and inability to understand the language I see & hear around me. Ville is one of the first people I run into and I somehow manage to make him figure out what’s happened to me. He lets me stay with him and teaches me Finnish and English as I acclimate to the present day. I stay in this time period for good, even if we can locate the portal again for me to return home a few times.
haven’t decided whether or not dragons will still be extant in 1997; stay tuned for possible future edit. 🔥↻(𓄼 .̀ ̮.́)Ψ🔥 +read notes in tags

I hate language bc I’m in intermediate Spanish and can parse out some French and Italian on the ikea instruction manual. I can watch a movie in Portuguese for one of my LatAm history classes and get the gist of what’s being said w/o subtitles. European romance language speakers I’m gripping you by the shoulders and shaking.
#from a native English speaker if that wasn’t clear#learning languages is hard#but if I ever want to learn another Romance language it’ll be a walk in the park comparatively#look im no expert on language but this is my experience so far#spanish langblr#that’s a tag#skirm rambles

i find it so interesting to think abt learning a language in a class vs learning a language by hearing native speakers of that language talking in it. i rly feel like there can be a huge difference there
#i was watching a video and changbin was like 'umm... yeah. so....' while he was trying to figure it out what to say and its like#to me that so obviously reads as 'hes heard a lot of english speaking bc he knows how to use english fillers exactly like a native speaker'#i remember i was taught fillers in french but when i was struggling w what to say i would use English fillers instead#it might just be bc hes better at English than i was at French I'm not a linguistics expert but#it really is inch resting to me#meow!!

Just got a message from another organization inviting me to do a lecture about one of the topics I've written an article about, and I think that's the fastest I've gone from flattered to mortified.
#i talk#job talk#Genuinely flattered but I'm probably going to turn them down#I'm a writer not a speaker (usually)#Also – I know enough to give a brief summary of the topic and link to helpful sources where people can learn more#but I feel like this is one of those topis where I'd personally prefer if someone who was an expert on the topic spoke#(or at least someone who had lived experience)#Still very flattered though#I'll have to ask my coworkers if they know someone else they can recommend

I know Barry Goldstein is a bit of a controversial Yiddish translator and I haven't been able to read any of his work yet but I really appreciate his effort because he's one of the few contemporary translators working into Yiddish at all. I'm hoping to get my hands on his Tolkien and Wodehouse translations and see how he handled them.
#Yiddish#Translation#langblr#Yes under normal circumstances literary translators should be expert native/bilingual speakers#But Yiddish doesn't have a lot of those who are also willing to translate classic literature into Yiddish#We don't even have enough translators translating from Yiddish!#I'd prefer an imperfect translation to no translation for now because it might pave the way for better retranslation later

I agree with the majority of your post, and I appreciate that you have an interest in cults but linking it back to one is like. Not accurate at all
look, I don't want to claim that fandoms are Textbook Cults nowadays. I am just pointing out that a lot of the behaviours are very cult-like, to a worrying degree, and the way people, especially young people or people who have not been in fandoms prior to this one, fall right into the deepest depths of the worst that fandom has to offer. I don't know what exactly you meaan by "not accurate at all", so I won't really get into it, but my point from the original post still stands. a lot of the most concerning behaviours is the same as we see in cults, and this is not a wow angry tumblr user mocks the twitter users, I am genuinely concerned.
cults are much more complicated than that. I know that. but a lot of the behaviours Are Still Cultlike.
#asks#discourse#look I am not a cult expert I am just a random internet person who watched far too many documentaries on this stuff#I am worried for the people who are participating in this fandom#I am worried for people who tie their entire identities to this fandom and the cc(s) they watch#there is most likely a better word to use for this that I am not aware of because Im not a native speaker#but there are cases of Actual Cults starting in fandoms so this shit is already toeing the line#and looking back at a lot of my experiences on :)twt is... yeah Ive seen this be done by cults before

My wife and I have a little game we play called "Speaking From Ignorance."
To play Speaking From Ignorance, all you need is a phone with a voice recorder, and another person who knows considerably more or considerably less about a topic than you do. The topic can be anything: from "how to bake a quiche" to "what happens in the Peter Jackson Hobbit movies" to "who is Florence Pugh" to "how does the traveling salesman problem work." All that matters is that one of you has a firm grasp on the material, and one of you absolutely the fuck does not.
Then the person who knows about the topic turns on the recorder, and says to the person who knows barely anything: "Hey - tell me everything you think you know about [X]."
The speaker is then not allowed to ask any questions. Nor is the expert allowed to volunteer any information. The expert is allowed to pipe up with a faintly incredulous "Oh--really? Do you--do you think so?" from time to time, but for the most part, the expert's job is just to sit there and make encouraging sounds while the speaker digs their own grave.
This is never not funny.
The reason you record it is because, very often, the first thing the speaker wants to do after finishing the recording is find out how you actually make a quiche, or whatever. Then you both get to go back and listen to how wrong they were.
We have a small library now of Speaking From Ignorance recordings, and I'm going to be listening to them until I'm eighty.
