Trump’s ‘liberation day’ could mean recession in the US and pain worldwide
The US president’s tariffs are vengeful and impetuous – and will have immense costs with no clear goal
With the huge and painful tariffs that Donald Trump announced on Thursday, “Tariff Man” is acting like a paranoid 12-year-old bully who is convinced that everyone has wronged him, and he wants revenge. But the president’s instrument of revenge – massive tariffs – is going to do serious damage to the US and global economies. Stock market investors are convinced that’s the case, with Wall Street and world stock markets losing trillions of dollars in value in recent days as a result of Trump’s obsession.
The president has escalated his risky, vengeful trade war even though the US economy was in strong shape when he took office – the jobless rate was just 4.1%, inflation was below 3% and US economic growth was the strongest in the industrial world, with its stock market at record levels. So it’s unclear whether the US economy needed the shock treatment that Trump is inflicting. The price increases resulting from his tariffs – which are a tax on imports – will cost the average American family $3,800 a year, according to the Budget Lab at Yale.
Trump is right that the number of manufacturing jobs is down substantially from decades ago, and he is intent on getting that number back up. But he’s taking a very high-stakes bet that he can significantly increase the number of factory jobs, even as many economists say the horses have left that barn, and it is too late or will be too painful to do much about it. In 1979, the US had a record 19.5m factory jobs. That number fell to 17m in 2001 and to 12.7m today (having risen by 600,000 during Joe Biden’s presidency).
Trump’s new tariffs result from a combination of impulsiveness, impetuousness and ignorance, although some economists say that idiocy and economic illiteracy also play a big part. Paul Krugman says that Trump’s tariffs reflect the “whims of a mad king”, adding that the administration’s case for tariffs is “completely incoherent”, as it insists that the tariffs won’t raise prices but will still raise hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue.
The tariffs that Trump announced on Thursday are staggering – 50% on tiny Lesotho, 49% on Cambodia, 46% on Vietnam, 34% on China, 32% on Taiwan, 24% on Japan and 20% on European Union countries. These percentages were arrived at not by careful, probing analysis that took months, but by some slapdash, Keystone Kops math.
It would be generous to say it’s the one-eyed leading the blind. Rather, it’s an economically blind, impetuous president leading a mum, intimidated Republican-controlled Congress. One of the tragedies here is that many congressional Republicans see the grievous damage Trump is doing, but they’re too craven to speak out and risk Trump’s and Elon Musk’s social media wrath.
Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, is predicting disaster. He says that as a result of Trump’s tariffs a recession “will hit imminently and extend until next year”. Zandi says that economic growth could fall by 2 percentage points, while the jobless rate could leap to a very painful 7.5%. On Friday, the Federal Reserve chair, Jerome Powell, also sounded the alarm, saying that Trump’s tariffs could cause even slower economic growth and higher inflation than originally expected.
With Trump’s 50% tariff rate on Lesotho, 46% on Vietnam and 37% on Bangladesh, those countries – with their export-dependent apparel industries – will suffer terribly. There will be huge layoffs and no doubt an increase in hunger and immiseration – just as Trump-Musk’s tremendous foreign aid cuts at USAID have already resulted in increased hunger and deaths. And one has to wonder: by pummeling poor, apparel-producing countries such as Lesotho, Cambodia, Vietnam and Bangladesh, what is Trump trying to achieve? Does he want to bring back to the US low-paying, garment-industry jobs making jeans and sneakers?
Carefully crafted tariffs can be helpful. They can be used to help build important industries or prevent the wholesale destruction of industries due to other countries’ bad behavior, like China’s improperly subsidizing its industries or dumping goods on the world market far below the cost of production. Unfortunately, Trump’s so-called “liberation day” tariffs are not a scalpel designed to help specific industries, but rather a blunderbuss mess, hitting everyone and everything, including US consumers and industries. Let’s not forget that the tariffs will raise costs at many US manufacturers and make them less competitive by, for instance, greatly increasing the price of imported steel and auto parts.
The tariffs that Trump is imposing are even greater than the infamous Smoot-Hawley tariffs, which are widely seen as having worsened the Great Depression. Krugman noted that Trump’s tariffs could also do serious damage because “imports as a share of the [US] economy are three times what they were in the 1920s”.
Even if Trump’s tariffs were to do what he hopes – create another million or two factory jobs – the cost would be immense. A recession. Millions of families hurt by higher prices. Trillions and trillions in lost stock market value. Far worse relations with our close allies and other countries. Opening the door to Trump’s adversary, China, significantly improving its trade and economic relations with other countries. Plus, a severe economic shock to many poorer nations.
And it’s not at all certain that Trump’s tariffs will create a million or more manufacturing jobs: US economic growth and jobs will be hurt by a possible tariff-induced recession, trade retaliation from other countries, a long-term loss of markets as traditional trading partners turn away from the US, and a possible long-term decline in US industrial competitiveness as tariff protections enable inefficient companies to succeed.
Trump’s big hope is that corporations will build new factories and create more factory jobs in the US, but corporate executives won’t do that unless they’re convinced that there’s economic stability and predictability. They’re not blind to how capricious and unpredictable Trump is, and they know that he loves to play master dealmaker and win concessions from other countries and then immediately slash their tariffs. Trump’s team says these tariffs will be here for the long haul, but can corporate CEOs count on those claims when they’re deciding to spend $400m on a new factory?
In announcing his huge new tariffs last Thursday, Trump proclaimed: “April 2, 2025 will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to make America wealthy again.” As usual, Trump failed to note some extremely important things.
Although he won’t admit it, the US is already very wealthy. If he were truly serious about fixing the economy and making it fairer, he wouldn’t be rushing to give massive tax cuts to the ultra-rich and sparking fears of vast cuts Medicaid and food stamps that struggling American families rely on.
What Trump and his team will never admit is that April 2, 2025 may for ever be remembered as the day the US economy took a grievous, Trump-induced tumble toward recession and higher prices. And not that Trump cares, but April 2, 2025 may also be remembered overseas for creating tremendous pain for struggling workers from Bangladesh to Lesotho to Honduras.

HEY! I don't mind AT ALL. The bad news is that I am wildly inconsistent but the good news is that if you are looking for options, I have SEVERAL.
90% of the time I draft in google docs and then move around between different software depending on my needs.
The major exception to this is during November for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). I've alternated between using Scrivner and LivingWriter from year to year.
Scrivner is more robust and integrates with a lot of other planning software. It's a one time payment, but doesn't store anything on the cloud. You'll have to manually export/re-import and keep version files if you use this.
LivingWriter is on the cloud, is a little more clean-looking and user friendly in terms of use, but is a subscription service. I travel a LOT so I wound up switching to this. It also has story beats outlined for you in a template if that's important to you. I still prefer scrivener but switching between mac/pc was killing me.
If I am getting especially distracted, then I turn to Writing Analytics. This is fantastic if you're really into tracking data for how much you write or want to build a habit and see the little boxes get checked off. I wind up exporting all files to either Scrivner or LW after the fact.
After I have something drafted up, I usually will send to Grammarly or ProWritingAid. I am leaning more towards ProWriting Aid these days since it's geared more towards creative writing than Grammarly. I cannot write in either software however, b/c my brain will want to edit at the same time and that slows me down.
If you want other really cool software for writing (specifically for plotting). I think these are a combo of free, paid, limited free etc.
Lynit - Really great for outlining complex stories that you need to untangle in your brain. I don't think it exports right now, but the devs are really responsive and could probably help you figure out an alternative. (Free for 2 weeks)
Obsidian - If you are the type of person who likes to world build and get lost in the details or want a writing editor that's a bit more bare bones, this is great. And it's free!
Plottr - if you want to plot out your story and see how events visually line up with each other this is for you (and exports into Scrivner). It's one time payment and lives on the cloud.
Miro - where I go to plot out my interactive stories! It's totally free and has so much flexibility in how you use it.

They would retain their hard-earned positions in the rebel network and, to all, appear dedicated to the cause. In reality, they would undermine Command’s questionable decisions they didn’t support. Decisions affecting the lives of those in the network and those outside.
“I am not the Empire,” Fehr had emphasized when she first asked to meet privately with Carinthia. “I want to help people. Not hurt those already hurting.”
While Carinthia longed for vengeance against the Empire, she’d seen reason to Fehr’s proposal. Sacrificing innocent people to obtain the greater good was the same moral argument the Empire practiced.
Yes, the network needed people who were willing to damn themselves: people like Carinthia and Bash. But it also needed people who could withstand the thirst for personal retribution: people like Fehr. Someone who was clear-headed and pragmatic. Someone who could oversee justice while maintaining her humanity.
Fehr was the leader Eluca, the galaxy, would need when the Rebellion overthrew the Empire. Fehr was the leader whose compassion and judiciousness would inspire others. So, in the witching hour of Yelona, Carinthia shook hands with her fellow rebel and signed her own death certificate.
“Quin’s mine produces the second-most doonium planetside,” Carinthia said. “And since Quin’s a sympathizer to the cause, Bash decided he was the best positioned to be of use.”
“We don’t even know if the doonium is important to the Empire’s future plans.” Fehr thumbed her temple, as if trying to ward off a headache. “This plan will get Quin and Heracli killed.”
Heracli and Quin Obisany, parents to their adopted daughter Steiner, were old friends of Fehr. Both wife and husband served in the lower echelons of the network, mere informants. As a legal historian, Heracli held coveted connections with low-ranked Elucan politicians. Now, Quin—the owner of his family’s mine—held an even more important position in the network: a possible explanation to the Empire’s secretive doonium mining operations draining Eluca of its natural resources.
“Will we have warning if the Empire moves against them?” Fehr asked with pragmatic focus.
Carinthia shook her head. “A CI informed me that high-profile spies will be executed quietly. They fear the general public will turn them into martyrs.”
“Magistrate Aro has learned a few things,” Fehr said. The shake of her head was rueful. “We’ll need to move them, then.”
“I’ll be discreet,” Carinthia said. “We should send them to—”
“Is it safe?”
“The Empire has abandoned it,” Carinthia advised, “and Command deemed it unhelpful to future plans. Heracli and her family will be protected from the possible vengeance of both.”
Fehr inclined her chin in acceptance and then scanned Carinthia. With a scowl, Carinthia shifted uncomfortably in the cushioned chair, crossing her legs. The other woman’s overbearing concern grated her.
When Carinthia agreed to Fehr’s proposal, she understood the demands expected of her. They needed information—information neither of them had access to. One of them needed to place herself in a position to be extorted, and Carinthia had accepted that role.
Over the months, Carinthia sedulously constructed a cover: a devout infatuation with Bash. He maintained direct relations and held influence within Command, after all. Her known disdain for most of the other rebels combined with her vendetta for the greater good convinced Bash of the sincerity behind her advances.
Bedding him was easier than expected: one dinner invitation and seemingly guarded interest. He took the bait. Years with her husband prepared her for the intense sex and the seductive role she needed to play.
Keeping his attention without being clingy was the difficult part. To cultivate intel about his personal plans as well as Command’s secrets, she needed to earn his trust and confidence. She had to make herself convenient without being too easy. So far, she’d succeeded.

Record-breaking floods in southern Brazil, the result of weather patterns intensified by climate change, have only started to recede after displacing half a million people in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and killing more than 160.
The full extent of the losses is still coming into focus, especially in rural areas where farmers like Almeida and her family produce much of Brazil’s rice, wheat and dairy.
Of her 60 egg-laying hens, just eight survived. Their cows have nowhere to graze in the flooded landscape.
“I’m not mourning. I’m grateful, because there are many who lost far more than us,” Almeida said. “I’m grateful we survived and I mourn for those who lost family.”
Theirs were among the nearly 6,500 family farms flooded by this month’s torrential downpours, according to analysis of satellite data by consultancy Terra Analytics.

If you ask me, they remind me of ragged mutant fur shaped into something decadent, diamond bright condensation dripping down an ice cold glass of vodka, and the iridescent carapace of a beetle pinned to a board. Leizu was born into a family of silk manufacturers, in a settlement quite far from Sol City. She learned to walk among the quiet pupating silk worms, doomed to die before they could ever take wing. A little thing like armageddon wasn't going to stop the Jins, either. Some of their silk worms survived, with fascinating and terrifying mutations. Silk manufacture stopped for nobody.
Her first hobby was lepidoptery, and it is something she does to this day. Her rooms are full of insects pinned to boards, and she has a particular love of mutated insects. Viewing these little life forms through such an analytical lens turned her into a callous little girl, and a callous young woman. Leizu didn't want to inherit an empire, she wanted to build her own.
So she set out, with a gun and a dream! Roamed the wastes shooting and skinning mutated beasts, turning their hides into garments of beauty. What's this, I hear you say? It's too hot in Australia for fur garments? Leizu doesn't care! She'll look fabulous at any cost and thinks you should too. Her cold heart stops her from overheating anyway <3 haha.
When she first came to Sol City with a bundle of furs, she was assigned to work in a textile manufacture factory (insulting). As soon as she could, she made the move to sector 10 where she could pursue her passion for fashion. Fur is her favourite, but she uses other fabrics too because sometimes you have to think a bit practically in order to turn a profit.
One problem was that within the walls of Sol City, it was harder to come by things to shoot. Leizu needed more power to truly build her fur empire, so she set her sights on the council. By that I mean, the previous councillor for sector ten went to a dinner party at hers. Shortly after, he fell mysteriously ill and passed away. Definitely no connection between those two events. With a spot available, Leizu campaigned hard and got voted in. She's continued to get voted in for several decades now : ) if she worries she's not going to get the votes, then the nice thing about being in the luxury business is having enough cash to buy your way.
With her power, she passionately fights for import/export policies. She's not seen her family in decades but she still really wants to crush their textile empire beneath hers. She also tends to convince mutants to go out into the wastes and hunt cool furry beasts for her. She'll do the skinning and stuff! She just needs lackeys to bring back the goods. She's also very bribeable. She's simply a material girl in a (non)material world!

Loves it! Sol City is her playground, she takes everything she wants from it. It also gives her distance from her parents, and they're so old they probably won't be alive much longer anyway. Why does Leizu have such beef with them, despite them spoiling her rotten? She's just like that. They taught her to crush the competition, and she views everyone as competition.

No. She's on the council, but they don't always agree with her and she is in fact often outvoted on vital matters like upping the export of luxury goods, which is terrible.

She did, and she chose it because all she ever wanted was to tear beasts apart and make beautiful clothes. If you crack a Cruella joke, you won't be the first.
what’s one object that they always keep on their person?
The fang of the first beast she killed out on her own. It is larger than her thumb, yellowed and vicious looking. She drilled a hole through it so that she could thread a chain through it, but she doesn't actually wear it because that would be gaudy. But she likes the idea of it, anyway. There is a groove rubbed into its side from years upon years of Leizu running her thumb across its surface in a repetitive motion that she finds grounding.
