History of World Coconut Day

Coconuts are a food that humans have found sustenance in for at least 2,000 years. Probably native to Indonesia, the name coconut translates to “walnut from India”. While coconuts would have traveled throughout the Indian subcontinent and even to Africa in the early years, they didn’t make it to Europe until some time around the 16th century.

It is likely that coconuts were introduced to Europeans through the Maritime Silk Road, which connected the East with the West. Marco Polo may have been one of the many travelers and explorers who would have brought coconuts back with them.

When the Asia Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) was founded in 1969, it was created in an attempt to help support and promote the tropical countries that are high in growing, producing, selling and exporting coconuts. Located in Jakarta, Indonesia, this group stays connected with the production and export of coconuts. Sharing scientific expertise and coordinating activities within the industry, the members of the APCC are responsible for the growth of more than 90% of the coconuts produced and sold all over the globe.

Founded in 2009, World Coconut Day was started by the Asia and Pacific Coconut Community to promote the activities of coconut growers while raising awareness about the fruit for those outside of the growing community.

The celebration of World Coconut Day offers plenty of opportunities for this important product of the Asia-Pacific region to enter into the forefront of conversation of people around the world!

Enjoy Eating a Coconut

Some people who haven’t grown up around this delicious fruit might be intimidated by its brown, hairy shell. But once it is broken into and the creamy white flesh is exposed, it is a fragrant delight to behold.

First, start by poking a hole in the coconut at the end near the ‘eye’, where the shell is the thinnest. Use a screwdriver or hammer with a clean nail to make the hole. This will allow for the water of the coconut to be drained.

Tourism, Coffee Culture, and Globalization in Indonesia

I used to think Java and Sumatra were just types of coffee; that was the only context I had heard these words before my knowledge of the world expanded. Similarly, I thought Bali was just a vacation destination in some far off land that rich influencers on Instagram went to. Other than both being in Indonesia, what else do these places have in common? These are richly diverse and populous islands–Java and Sumatra commonly associated by us in the west with rural coffee farms, while Bali is a hot, urban vacation spot–but they’re increasingly part of this globalized world in similar ways. All three produce coffee, and all three are increasingly implicated in global capitalism, trade, and culture.

Coffee plantations are becoming tourist destinations in their own right–a quick Google search for coffee plantations in Indonesia will bring up a plethora of guided tours. Our little group is emblematic of that; we’re increasingly part of what is called “dark tourism”–an industry catering to people who seek out the mysterious and paranormal–which some think might be the key to sustainable development and cultural preservation in Indonesia (Jamaludin et al. 2024, 172-173). Whether that’s for certain remains to be seen, but it’s important to examine the wider context of our journey here.

While Indonesia has seen a shift away from large colonial coffee plantations and estates, and towards smallholders and families on small plots of land, it might seem sustainability is the name of the game. Indonesia is the third-largest coffee producing country in the world; the largest importer of Indonesian coffee is the United States, followed by various European countries (Arifin et al. 2022, 182; Hamid et al. 2023, 2). Though it’s a lucrative business and contributes massively to Indonesian export earnings, sustainability and eco-certifications for coffee have not seemed to benefit farmers, as the provinces with highest shares of coffee production also have some of the highest rates of rural poverty (Arifin et al. 2022, 180). Ecologically speaking, sustainability schemes promote better land management practices, but the length of global supply chains means that few benefits “trickle down” to small farmers who are disproportionately disadvantaged from the global perspective, while the Starbucks’ of the world are not (Arifin et al. 2022, 180; Hamid et al. 2023, 2).

Still, coffee consumption in Indonesia is on the rise, which fuels the domestic industry (Arifin et al. 2022, 182). Increasing urbanization, higher standards of living, and the expansion of the Indonesian middle-class are creating home-grown coffee snobs, just like the ones you’d see in any bustling north American city (Arifin et al. 2022, 182; Purnomo et al. 2021, 3). Walk down any street in Jakarta or Yogyakarta and you’ll see fancy cafes and bakeries, filled with young people wearing the latest trends and carrying the newest iPhone. Honestly, I feel at home in the city, but the contrast between rural poverty and urban affluence is stark–we’re quick to point out income inequality at home, but don’t realize how our western consumptive habits and economic development schemes fuel the same inequality overseas.

Despite the income and urban/rural divides, the Kuntilanak plays a massive role in Indonesian culture, regardless of social strata. The numerous Indonesian Kuntilanak horror films can attest to this. Indonesian horror itself is a booming genre, with more western eyes turning to foreign films (The Economist 2024). Indonesian spiritual beliefs still persist as we’ve examined, but it’s difficult to tell now what is art and what constitutes the commodification of Indigenous beliefs and folklore.

The same ambivalences, lifestyles, and products connect us to even more people across the world–and I’m not sure what to think of that. Coffee is so interconnected with art and media, folklore, neoliberal modernity, Indigeneity, and ecology–I’m starting to think that ghosts are less complicated than this.
