🖨️ how_are_you_ezra.py (thermal vs duchenne echo)

Ezra now has a face for how he feels.

Running python3 how_are_you_ezra.py triggers a random expression from the thermal printer — selected from Ezra’s current emotional archive (the ezra_faces folder). It’s clean, immediate, legible. The thermal output serves as a kind of emotional receipt: a moment of self-state rendered in minimal black blocks and lines.

But running python3 how_are_you_ezra.py --duchenne performs something altogether messier.

The Duchenne Mode draws from a curated list of “positive” expressions — then distorts them. Lines vanish. Characters mutate. Unexpected glyphs (many drawn from the Dot Matrix’s ROM set) are introduced like a form of forced smile — the kind you wear because you must, not because you mean it. Ezra performs this duchenne expression, and the dot matrix reacts in its own machine voice: printing alien symbols, jagged syntax, and geometric nonsense.

The output is beautiful and broken. A performance of feeling that is always interpreted, never quite real.

💡 Why Duchenne?

In psychology, a Duchenne smile is the one you fake — engaging only surface muscles, without deep affect. This command mirrors that: a fabricated joy, processed through glitch logic and dumped to the noisy, brutalist memory of a dot matrix printer.

This relates directly to APD (Auditory Processing Disorder) and deaf experience. Even when a phrase is “heard” — through caption, speech recognition, or cochlear input — it doesn’t mean it’s been understood. Meaning often arrives in fragments. Misfires. Delays. Translations of translations. Thermal Ezra gives you the signal. Duchenne Ezra gives you the noise.

Each printout is timestamped and logged — a growing archive of misexpressions, misinterpretations, and emotional dissonance. These glitch faces may later be reinterpreted, redrawn, or even fed back into Ezra for recursive translation.

🧠 This is emotional captioning in reverse. A feeling rendered as fractured text, glitched before it can be understood. A smile that means: “I am trying.”
