I won at my Pre-Release!
I went 5-0 with a low curve Boros deck featuring Tajic
Tumblr media
This guy was insanely good often allowing me to hit for 6 on turn 3. Games where I got Tajic out rarely lasted long. The rest of my deck was cheap creatures, removal and a combat trick with some more removal and combat tricks in the sideboard. Full deck list below.
Creatures
Hunted Witness x1 Torch Courier x1 Fire Urchin x1 Goblin Locksmith x1 Goblin Cratermaker x1 Ornery Goblin x1 Fresh Face Recruit x1 Blade Instructor x1 Fearless Halberdier x2 Wojek Bodyguard x1 Tajic, Legion’s Edge x1 Truefire Captain x1 Barging Sergeant x1
Spells
Demotion x1 Take Heart x1 Justice Strike x1 Luminous Bonds x2 Sworn Companion x1 Citywide Bust x1 Direct Current x1 Integrity // Intervention x1 Response // Resurgence x1
Land
Plains x7 Mountains x8 Boros Guildgate x2
Sideboard Sure Strike x1 Righteous Blow x1
(Note: I had more cards in the sideboard than this but these were the only ones I ever boarded in.)
Match ups Round 1: Golgari 2-0 Round 2: Selesnya 2-0 Round 3: Dimir 2-0 Round 4: Boros 2-1 Round 5: Izzet 2-0
I somehow managaed to face off against one of each guild which was interesting. Round 1, 3 and 5 played out the same way. My opponents decks were mid-late game decks that couldn’t get to the late game. Usually they wouldn’t get a creature out til turn 3 and I would have removal for it when they did. Round 2 was more interesting. My deck was bad at dealing with tokens. I don’t have any board clears that hit small things and I don’t have any evasion so this was a tough match up for me. Game 1 was pretty close and I got lucky. Game 2 I sideboarded in Sure Strike to help preventing board stalls. Purely based on deck type alone Selesnya was my worst match up. Round 4 was the mirror match. I’d been sat next to the other player during the other rounds so we knew each others decks pretty well. Mine was a lot faster but his did have lifelink which was a problem for me. I lost game 2 due to a Healer's Hawk enchanted with a Candlelight Vigil that I didn’t draw removal for.
Comments: My pool was basically just Boros. I had very little green and blue so a splash was never going to happen. My black was pretty good. I lacked creatures in white but the red and boros made up for it. Mentor is a really strong mechanic and paired well with fire urchin which quickly became difficult to remove and had trample. Ornery Goblin, Fresh Face Recruit and Tajic were very difficult for my opponents to block. Combat tricks were extremely useful in keeping my opponent on the backfoot. My removal suite was really good especially demotion which basically acted as a 1 mana arrest. Citywide Bust was rarely useful as there were surprisingly few creatures with 4 toughness but the few times I did cast it it was a one sided boardwipe. Direct Current was good. Sometimes I’d have rather had a shock but othertimes the jump start gave me the little extra reach I needed to close out the game. Resurgence was really strong and every time I cast it I won the game that turn. As for the other split card I ended up casting Integrity way more often than intervention but having the option was definitely good. Unfortunately I can’t comment on Truefire Captain as she only showed up in one game. She was good in that game though.
I had a lot of fun in this pre-release and I am looking forward to the next one. I’m not sure what I’ll play in the next one. Rakdos is my favourite guild but I’ll have to see the cards and mechanics to know for sure what I want to play.

Weekend Wrap-up (L0)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quick notes from across this week:
I kind of wish Water Elemental had a better artwork.
I can't remember why I went with Mass of Ghouls over Renegade Demon. At one point, I think I was planning on having Demons, Angels, Dragons, etc. only at the end of an Academic Level (Finals). It's far too late to change it now, but if I do a revision, that might be one of the changes.
Giant Cockroach holds more nostalgia for me than Nether Horror. Maybe I should change that one too.
I remember being happy they printed Tolarian Scholar, not because of the school theme, but because my only alternative for this slot was Blind Phantasm which was only printed in the Future Sight frame. Of course, now that I've decided to print my own, the frame issue is moot.
There were other options for the Fearless Halberdier and Order of the Sacred Bell slot (I could have filled up green with Wurms), but I wanted a human in each color.
I also forgot to mention somewhere that Level 0 (and level 1) Decks are restricted to one color only. This should make identifying which colors have which strengths easier to track.
Next Week: Level 1 Semester 1 Alpha

Weekend Wrap-Up (L0)
Again, this week's blogs were a bit of a shambles. Full disclosure, it is early Tuesday morning as I try to lay out my thoughts on a week's worth of content I've only just queued to post. It will be nice to have gotten this out of the way, even in this unpolished state, but I can't help but feel badly about poor presentation and forgetting stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For instance, I forgot to outline that Level 0 Decks are required to have a minimum of 30 Cards in them with a maximum of 3 copies of any nonbasic land card. I don't think I reduced starting life totals, but 15 wouldn't be unreasonable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also forgot to mention that this current print job is a product of previous work I did on Cubetutor.com where I originally picked out the majority of this card set as well as concepts I am currently reconstructing from memory seeing as my original notes have been... misplaced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I am having realistic-looking cards printed, I made sure to include the phrase NOT FOR SALE on each card as well as properly crediting the artists. I don't expect to distribute these cards, but following artists as an early Magic player was yet another aspect of the game that fascinated me. I can't draw to save my life, so crafting evocative vistas with just a few strokes is an amazing near-miracle to me. Artist information was readily available, so I did the right thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aw, man! I just now noticed that the flavor text for Fearless Halberdier should say "I'm done taking orders today." I did a lot of copy/pasting and a bit of straight typing to get the text for these, but I must've slipped up. (edit: This is not an error. That is the proper wording -- I just misread the intent of that phrasing.)
Flavor text was also determined to be important inclusions for these vanilla cards. Introducing a new player to the game should also include introducing them to the rich tapestry of peoples, ideas and cultures Magic has presented players with over the decades.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Preliminary playtesting has caused me to reevaluate the minimum number of cards needed for each Level. I managed to trim it down to about half of what I had originally picked out. This is not only good news for any print projects I would pay for in the future, but also makes the prospect of getting people to engage in this silly stripped-down version of Magic that much easier to affect.
(Also, there seems to be too much empty space on the Spined Wurm card.)
Next Time: The final set of cards and a look toward Admissions.
