Sims In Bloom: Generation 2 Pt. 220 (The Truth About Layne Coffin)

Finished at the tavern - for now - Ash and Conrad met Felix in Crow's Crossing outside Olive Specter's stately old stone home. "Thanks for meeting us here," Conrad said, and Felix smiled easily.

"I can't have you meeting with my client without me, but if you had bad news I'm sure you would've warned me beforehand."

Conrad smiled. "I don't have all the pieces yet," he said. "But I'm hoping she's a bit more talkative this time."

Felix nodded. "I guess there's only one way to find out."

Olive welcomed them inside, with her son, Nyon, watching curiously as they took seats at the dining room table. He perked up when he noticed Ash among them, and he quietly introduced himself.

His mother watched proudly as the boys made small talk about schoolwork and death frogs. "My Nyon's always struggled to make friends, but your stepson doesn't look at him differently like other kids do."

"Ash is a great kid," Conrad said. "Treats his friends well, practically considers the Grim Reaper a part of his extended family."

Olive laughed. "He probably knows Grim better than Nyon."

"You didn't mention your history with Grim the last time we spoke, Ms. Specter."

Olive grinned. "Captain Gordon, you didn't ask."

He frowned. "You also failed to mention how you worked for him for years."

"I answered the questions you asked me. I'm not going to incriminate myself with additional details that probably don't apply. What does my work history have to do with Layne's disappearance."

In truth, it made little difference, especially considering the theory Conrad had begun to believe in. "I'm just hoping you'll be more forthcoming this time. The sooner we learn what happened to Layne Coffin, the sooner you're not a suspect anymore."

"I don't mind being a suspect when I know I'm not guilty," she sighed. "But I don't know what you want me to say. I did some work as an assistant reaper many years ago. Pure curiousity, of course, but I've been working as a mortician at the cemetery since Nyon was born. It's good work. Quiet. Are you looking for a career change, Captain Gordon?"

"The decorating in this place is pretty cool," Ash said to Nyon as Olive overheard. "It reminds me of Felix and Lilith's place, but it's fancier. The fireplace in the living room is so cool!"

Olive grinned. "The house came with a lot of the more intricate woodwork, but I've added my touch through the years."

Nyon laughed. "She added black. That's what she means."

"What's not to like about the colour black?" Olive eyed her only son with playful indignation as Ash heard a familiar banging in the walls. Houses with wandering ghosts often shook like that.

"Did you hear that?" Ash looked around curiously as Conrad's spine straightened.

"This old house settles on its foundations all the time. Every time the memorial canon goes off in Crow's Crossing, the windows rattle."

"No, it wasn't a canon," Ash insisted. "It came from inside."

"What about the half-finished paintings? Or the static on the TV?" Nyon wondered. "Any time we watch a horror movie, the static ruins it. But there's never static if we just watch the news or something."

"This house is not haunted!" Olive protested. "None of my dear, departed exes are haunting these walls. It's just an old home with a few hundred years of wear and tear."

Ash nodded but knew better, and he moved slowly toward the grand staircase to get a better view of the Specters' elegant sitting room.

"Layne Coffin's ghost is at your easel right now, Ms. Specter."

Olive's eyes bulged as the group stood to move quickly to the sitting room, and Layne looked back in his transparent, ghostly form. They could all see him, as though Ash's acknowledgment strengthened his connection to this plane of existence.

"Layne, what are you doing here?! You're dead?! Captain Gordon, I know what this looks like..."

"I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation," said Felix. "As your attorney I'll make sure my friend gets to the bottom of it."

"There's nothing to investigate," Layne said with an elaborate sigh. "Other than why I've been stuck here since I ate that hot pot."

Conrad masked a smile, keeping a straight expression as they moved into the sitting room to talk. "You ate the boiled death frog willingly. Multiple servings?"

Layne nodded. "It's not the first time I've done it. The creative high has helped me write some of my greatest compositions. But this time, I...well, I might've had too much all at once. I don't think it was a bad batch - I wrote the best piece I've written in years on the first helping, and I was chasing another surefire hit when the second helping hit a little differently."

"So you overdid it," Conrad acknowledged. "What took you so long to show yourself as a ghost?"

"I've always been fascinated by the idea of living as a ghost, but I'm still mastering this life state, Captain. I don't know why you could suddenly see me now. I've been here since I...well, I am dead, am I not?"

Nyon, with his mysterious sixth sense, nodded plainly. "Definitely."

"Ghosts have a certain smell," said Ash. "I can't describe it, but...you smell like the dead."

"Dude, I know exactly what you mean." Nyon smiled at his new friend - another kid with mysterious abilities tied to death, who could understand him in ways no other kids ever tried.

Olive, on the other hand, was aghast. "You've been dead this whole time and haunting the walls of this house?"

"For a while, I stayed hoping Ophelia and the baby would come back here, but then I couldn't leave at all. I don't know why."

"Maybe you can't leave because you feel guilty," offered Nyon.

"I'm sure you'd love it if I went just about anywhere else," the ghostly musician sneered.

"Please don't do this now, you two," Olive begged.

"He's never liked me. Ever since that day we met at the cemetery and you invited me to stay, he's looked at me like I'm a monster."

"You started dating my cousin!"

"Years later, I did. You hated me long before then."

Felix cleared his throat. "Alright, I think we can get through this conversation without trying to kill each other." Conrad eyed him sharply. "Sorry. Bad choice of words."

"Who cares what I think of you?" Nyon sneered. "You're dead. Why don't you just cross over?"

"Because Ophelia's out there somewhere with my daughter, and I've written more songs while I've been stuck here than I have for the last six years."

"That's as long as we've been together," Olive noted. Her confident exterior melted slightly, and the hurt in her voice was obvious.

Layne offered a sympathetic frown. "My pimento, I'm sorry," he said, as Nyon rolled his eyes at the cutesy nickname for him mother. "When we met, the connection was immediate, passionate, and everything I thought I was missing. But I was foolish and in lust; finding out Ophelia would have my child changed me. I thought I didn't want to be a father, but since I've been stuck here, I yearn to know my own child."

Olive was quiet, glancing at her hands until she took a deep breath through her nose and stood. "Can I get anybody a drink?"

"Please don't shut down, my pimento seed."

"I'm not shutting down, Layne. You just locked the front door."

"No one needs a drink," Conrad interjected. "Everyone just needs to calm down. Now that we know there was no crime here, what is it you want, Mr. Coffin?"

"I want to know where to find Ophelia and my child and live with them. As a ghost."

Felix, the former apparition who waited over a century for reanimation, guffawed heavily. "You're not serious. What about the smell, the...the goo waste?"

Layne shrugged. "I've been dealing with it. Small price to pay for the explosive creativity. The San Myshuno Symphony may not want me as a ghost, but I know a record producer out there will jump all over the gimmick. Layne Coffin, the spectral bard of Simlandia!"

"Your daughter, Willow, lives with her," Conrad confirmed, careful not to say too much knowing how much Ophelia didn't want to be found by her Aunt Olive. "I can't give out her exact location while the investigation is still open, but if you're able to leave this place I'll send you in the right direction."

Layne smiled. "Once I know Olive can forgive me in time, I can go. Nyon's probably right; I couldn't leave without ending things properly, but it took that ghost whisperer in green for anyone to notice me."

With the mystery solved and Layne Coffin no longer missing, Olive stood at the top step, glancing down at his ghostly form on the edge of the property.

"I'm sorry about all this, Olive. I know you probably doubt that-"

"It's a good thing I don't listen to orchestral music, so I won't have to hear how your life with my niece and great-niece is everything you ever wanted."

Layne nodded. "That's fair. I wish you and your son well, sincerely. I hope you know that."

"I do know that, Layne. One day, I might wish you the same."

Conrad and Ash headed back to Brindleton Bay while Layne made his way to San Myshuno, reunited with the two girls who most inspired his ghostly soul. ->

Credit to @matchalovertrait, who totally knew I made Dylan Richards' boiled death frog hot pot escapade canon for a reason and then somewhere along the way got tricked by my riddlespeak into doubting herself! I'm sorry!!

NOTE: Layne is an odd duck and it's totally valid to feel that way! Some don't believe he truly loves Ophelia and that may we'll be true. He may not know monogamous love or real commitment and maybe Ophelia knows, or maybe Ophelia will soon find out what it's like to be Layne's official partner (you know what they say about men who marry their mistress, and he may we'll be a cliche!) But I've been resurrecting so many ghosts, I thought I should send one back, but keep him around to just play with some of the ghost features here and there, in case I ever want to do more with it!

Later that evening, Eva got a call from Felix, the ghost she met at the festival, who invited her to the Full Moon Revelry. They joined the other revelers at the bonfire, took a dip together in the river, shared their first kiss, and woohoo'd in a nearby crypt. It was oddly romantic, and Eva went home hoping she'd see Felix again.

Captain Sigma V: What happened?

Captain Sigma A: What happened is that you're my evil clone who just emerged from the cloning machine. And you are going 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯.

Felix: Only you left, Janie. Would you like to act together with me or do you want to do it with one of your classmates?

Janie: I can do it with you.

Felix: How about we go with a fantasy theme?

Janie: Can I be a vampire?

Bruce: She's going for the arm? Since when do vampires bite you in the arm?

Venessa: Where else would they bite you?

Bruce: In the neck. Have you never read or watched any fantasy fiction?

Venessa: I mainly watch sci-fi.

Kristy: I'd love to see her bite the professor in the neck.

Bruce: Now you're making it sound weird. I just want it to be true to the source material.

Felix: Okay, wait.

Felix: Bruce is right. Vampires usually bite people in the neck. And they often charm people first.

Vampire: I'm controlling your mind.

Felix: I know that vampires are supposed to be living dead, but your eyes are too vacant and your fingers are too stiff. And don't tell the audience what you're doing, they should be able to tell.

Janie: Sorry…

Felix: It's okay, just try to be the vampire. Maybe you could imagine that you're a specific vampire from a book or movie.

Janie: Okay. I'll try.

Felix: Yes, that's more like it.

Bruce: See? That's how vampires suck blood.

Venessa: You sure that isn't just something people get off on?

Vampire: Scrumptious!

Janie: Was that better?

Felix: Much better!

Janie: Yay!

Felix: But I do realise that, while you're all good at improv, you're more used to comedic improv rather than more serious themes. So everyone's homework will be to practice improv with serious themes.

Alexandrea: Who do you think did best today??

Felix: I'd like you five to discuss that together.

Alexandrea: I'm honestly impressed by Venessa, staying in role when I didn't.

Janie: What about Kristy?

Kristy: I wouldn't have come up with it without Venessa's cues.

Wondering where Antonio has been? Well, he was at a wedding! Antoinette, the beautiful lawyer who helped in Dulce v. Caruso, was also in attendance. Antonio and his stowaway cat, Selene, had a great time.

The Marigold Chateau, Ravenwood

[When Antonio told his grandfather about other commitments, he was being truthful; one of them was

his colleague Felix Psyded, Esquire, and Lilith Pleasant’s wedding.]

[Antonio didn’t attend out of obligation, though. They were friends located in different cities but employed under the same firm. The two met when Antonio paid a visit to the Britechester office one time.]

[They kept in touch and had a mutual respect. Antonio felt comfortable giving advice to Felix when he worked on a plea deal for Rafa Bonilla, a young man with previous ties to another cartel. Now, Rafa was free from incarceration and Los Tigres, and he was a guest at this wedding, too. He also got along with Antonio.]

ANTONIO: Selene, please behave.

[Antonio chased Selene after her collar fell off. According to him, she was good about never straying too far away; however, he didn’t take any chances in this unfamiliar town. He put the collar back on and pet her on the head.]

CONRAD: Antonio, nice running into you again. Why don’t you join me for a drink?

[Earlier in the day, Antonio spoke to Captain Conrad Gordon of Brindleton PD. Initially, he was wary of the observant law enforcer, but Rafa assured him that he was trustworthy.]

[But now it was just the two of them. All the other guests were in different parts of the venue, so Antonio’s guard was back up.]

ANTONIO: Yeah, sure.

[Each of them ordered a drink from the bar once Antonio sat down. Conrad attempted to lighten the mood with a joke.]

CONRAD: Good thing you put Selene’s collar back on. Lilith might be plotting to catnap her.

[Antonio chuckled.]

ANTONIO: She does seem like a fellow black cat fan, given her alternative style.

CONRAD: She has a black cat tattoo. I’m sure she and Felix will adopt one once they have settled into their new home.

ANTONIO: That’s a tattoo I’m surprisingly missing.

[Conrad nodded.]

CONRAD: I noticed your tattoos the other day. Do any of them hold a special meaning?

[Antonio paused, still on edge. Was Conrad checking if he had any cartel-related tattoos?]

ANTONIO: Honestly, most of them lack any meaning.

CONRAD: Ah, you got them because they looked cool? I like that.

[Maybe Conrad was a pretty chill dude, actually?]

ANTONIO: ..Well, I admit I went overboard quickly.. I took advantage of my newfound freedom after I turned eighteen. But I genuinely like them.

CONRAD: That’s normal. I got into some trouble at university because of the freedom I had.. but Rafa needed me.

CONRAD: It makes me happy to see him enjoying his life – dancing carefree at this party, spending time with his girlfriend.

[Antonio recalled Rafa describing Conrad as an older brother to him. It was touching.]

[Okay, this guy was safe! Conrad and Antonio spent the next half hour chatting about geeky topics, their pets, and boxing. Antonio was more of a basketball guy, but he focused on the shared interests. The two men laughed and had a good time.]

[Conrad started talking about his job as a detective, which got Antonio thinking about Dulce...]

ANTONIO: Hey, do you know of any private investigators you could recommend? It’s for a past client of mine... your son is a fan of hers.

CONRAD: Oh, hold on. I know the right person.

[He took out his phone and gave Antonio the contact information of the PI.]

ANTONIO: Thank you.

FELIX: I’m a little jealous; Conrad and I got acquainted at a bar, but we had a rocky start.

[Felix teased his good friend.]

CONRAD: Felix! Congratulations again.

ANTONIO: I can’t believe the night is nearly over. Why don’t we take a small group photo?

FELIX: We must! Life is too short. You can never have enough photographs.

Gulshan and his staff were prepping everything for the restaurant before opening that day, until Gulshan heard someone repeatedly knocking on the front door. He decided to check who so desperately wanted to speak to him before opening hours.

Gulshan: Hello, oh- come in, don't mind the pig- Felix: I do mind the pig Mister Prasad, because that's exactly why I'm here. Felix Psyded is the name- I'm here on behalf of the restaurant inspection. We have gotten a complaint about a free-roaming pig in your restaurant.

Gulshan: You- What? From who? I have never gotten a complaint about Lord Hamlet. Everybody loves him! Felix: Not the person who made the complaint, sir. Gulshan: This is ridiculous! What could a mini pig possibly do for someone to file a complaint?

Felix: We don't allow live animals to be kept, housed, permitted to enter into, or remain in any food service establishments. With a few exceptions for service animals of course- Plus, a pig is not hygienic, especially in a restaurant.

Gulshan: Clearly you know nothing about pigs. Pigs are actually very clean animals- And if that isn't enough, I give him a bath every two weeks!

Felix: You're ordered to get rid of the pig, sir. Otherwise I'll have to call someone to confiscate him. Gulshan: You can't just take him away like that! He is my-

Temperance: MY pig. I heard you want the pig to be removed from the restaurant, is that right? Felix: Yes indeed, Miss...

Temperance: Temperance. Well, Lord Hamlet is my pig because... Gulshan let me adopt him yesterday! I thought Lord Hamlet would like spending the day here after his first night at my home- But don't worry, I won't bring him to work again!

Felix: I see... Is this true, Mister Prasad? Gulshan: Yes... uh- Yes!

Gulshan: And of course you can't just take away this lovely woman's dear pet pig. I don't think you have any right to do that, especially after she said to not bring him to the restaurant again-

-I think there is no reason anymore for you to be here. Now, if you don't mind, we still have a lot of work to do before the the restaurant opens, and currently you're just wasting our time...

Felix: Don't think that you'll get away with it that easily- The pig better be gone the next time I come by. You have a nice day... Mister Prasad.

I didn't know this could happen in rental units but Saranya is not having it. She's got a whole ground floor to decorate tomorrow and a wedding to plan and she NEEDS. HER. SLEEP.

Helene has come so far, it's finally time for her to fulfill her goal, and bring the dead back to life...or something like that. What was her goal, even?

Weren't they trying to counter ambrosia?

Who cares, time to find some ghosts.

Joe comes around with gifts and an offer--he'd like to move in with Helene! Too bad that she's more of a lone wolf type. She rejects his offer.

He didn't like that...

Oh well, time to throw a party and forget about this new, weird tension. Morgyn shows up and has a heart to heart with Joe where Helene can hear.

"I don't know why she wouldn't want to live together--we've been dating so long."

"So long? Hasn't it only been a couple of weeks? Of course she still wants her space." Morgyn is quite the voice of reason.

In fact, it's pretty attractive to hear someone more on her wavelength.

The party is a great success, and Helene is learning many new things about herself. One of which being that she doesn't want to be with Joe anymore.

"We need to talk."

"I just don't think we're right for each other. I know you love me, but I have other(worldly) commitments that come first."

"Helene, I knew you'd gone way too far with this Grim Reaper business. Are you even human anymore?"

"This is what I mean... you just don't get it."

With Joe given the boot, Helene finally has the space to get on with her real goal, making (and using) ambrosia. Now all she needs is a ghost to test it out.

She finds Felix Psyded hanging out at the local Ghost Night. This one will do nicely! She always did get along with academic types.

Finally, the moment of truth.

He takes the ambrosia and--

It's worked!

Helene has defied death itself and brought a ghost back to life. Now all that's left is to figure out how to live a normal life after doing something like this.

Maybe she can find her new normal somewhere else. Ciudad Enamorada has served her well, it's time to move along.

Almost every ghost Alexandra met was gay. Which was fine for making friends, but not so fine for making babies. She remembered a ghost she'd met at the Thinned Festiveil named Felix Psyded. She discovered that he lived in Ciudad Enamorada, so she went for a visit...and he was very happy to see her.

Felix: As soon as I call action, you should be in role. Are you ready?

Kristy: I'm ready.

Bruce: Me too.

Felix: Aaand… Action!

Felix: Oh, for Watcher's sake.

Venessa: This is the worst acting I've seen from those two since we were first years.

Felix: Kristy, Bruce, I said steamy relationship.

Venessa: They look like they're hugging a parent goodbye after Harvestfest.

Janie: Try kissing instead.

Kristy: No, wait, sorry, that was a really awkward kiss.

Bruce: Yeah. Maybe we should just stop here and-

Kristy: Oh, but we're not done yet.

Janie: Now we're talking!

Bruce: What was that?

Kristy: Sorry, but he said improv and steamy. Maybe I should've asked you first.

Bruce: No, you did as you were told. I just didn't expect that at all.

Venessa: Finally we got to see a proper kiss. I hope they'll go for a non parent-child hug next.

Venessa: That's more cute than steamy, but at least it's better than before, but maybe we should stop them, because that can't be good for Kristy's arm and-

Kristy: My Back!

Bruce: You okay?

Kristy: Don't worry, it's oka-

Kristy: Oww...

Alexandrea (whispering to Janie): Wow, she's good.

Bruce: I'm sorry!

Kristy: Hehehehehe…

Bruce: What?

Kristy: Sorry. I couldn't resist.

Bruce: That was a joke?

Kristy: It was acting. I went with improv based on what Venessa said.

Bruce: Don't scare me like that.

Felix: Brilliant! Picking up on cues from the audience can sometimes be crucial for improv. Now, for the next scene, I'd like to see Captain Sigma and Captain Sigma's evil clone, but both of them think they're the original and a hero.

Venessa: Any suggestions on who should do the scene?

Felix: I take it that you want to do it. And I honestly think you and Alexandrea is the best choice, since both of you read the Captain Sigma comics.

NOTE: Okay okay, let's do this again! As some of you know, I have the Japan and Colombia trips in the queue. We will be switching back and forth between them, which will take about a month. This was done on purpose for the ✨ summer vibes ✨ (even though I did get a little carried away). At this point, I'm embracing the slow pace! It is what it is 😅 And since this has been going on for a long time, please don't hesitate to ask questions for clarity.

[Antonio had to buy baby gifts for three different couples: Felix and Lilith Psyded, Lex and Jacqueline Mattingly, and Rafa Bonilla and Melissa Ramsay – so, for his colleague, boss, new friend, and their respective partners!]

FRANKIE: HOW MANY???

ANTONIO: Three registries.

FRANKIE: You’re joking!

ANTONIO: I’m really not.

FRANKIE: Jeez, were they all planned pregnancies?

[One of Frankie’s motives for taking part in the science baby research was to help same-sex couples have biological kids. However, Frankie isn’t a fan of children. Kids are loud, germ-ridden, and expensive.]

[Meanwhile...]

DANI: I still can’t believe that’s how you told Antonio you knew who his dad was.

[Yoltic let out a nervous laugh.]

YOLTIC: My guilt hasn’t gone away yet... I think it got to his head.

DANI: He’s convinced he looks just like his dad, but I don’t see it. Nobody else does either; otherwise wouldn’t someone have spoken up? His face is on a few billboards advertising the law firm, and Del Sol Valley has many Latin American immigrants...

YOLTIC: And you can’t find pictures of Fernando Romero online. He’s only been seen in person.

DANI: AND who else will make the connection by taking a photo of Antonio and DRAWING a mustache on him out of boredom?

YOLTIC: Not very many people, I imagine? I’m his only stylist, after all.

[One evening, Yoltic sought entertainment by thinking of ways to change Antonio’s hairstyle. He sketched a mustache out of sheer curiosity, and then a strange familiarity struck him.]

[The mustache-wearing Antonio reminded him of Fernando, rumored member of Los Venenosos. Years ago, Yoltic saw Fernando on the streets of Mexico. He was stunned, but didn’t act on it. That’s what you do to stay alive: Don’t get involved in the cartel’s affairs.]

[So, Yoltic drew Fernando next to the image of Antonio on a sheet of printing paper. The resemblance was uncanny. He held onto it until he confronted Antonio.]

[Yoltic felt brave enough to do so because Antonio was harmless. Moody, yes; but a good, kind-hearted guy.]

ANTONIO: A baby book about ghosts? It’s not on the registry, but it could be something Felix and Lilith would like.

FRANKIE: I say stick to the registry and only get ONE gift. You see? All kids do is take all your money.

ANTONIO: You’re not exactly scrambling for funds if you have a vacation home in Oasis Springs.

FRANKIE: I still sleep peacefully at night knowing I can’t accidentally knock somebody up.

YOLTIC: Same here!

[Frankie and Yoltic ran to each other and high-fived.]

FRANKIE: People who actually smile! I’ve been saved, thank you!

FRANKIE: You got hit with three registries, too?

DANI: No, just one for Lex and Jackie.

FRANKIE: See, how does Toño do it? He’s the quietest yet most popular one here.

YOLTIC: We need a detective in our group. Maybe they can get to the bottom of this mystery.

ANTONIO: A bigger mystery would be why I happen to be a magnet for the loudest, most talkative people in the universe.

[The four of them laughed. They usually teased each other, with Antonio being the main target. He honestly didn’t mind that.]

DANI: Since we’re all here, should we shop together? It’ll be fun!

ANTONIO: Okay, but I get dibs on the first nice thing we see. I was here first.

YOLTIC: Can’t argue with that.

DANI: It’s only fair after bullying you, too.

[Upstairs...]

YOLTIC: We are definitely NOT buying any of the clothes here. Why is everything literally polyester? Disgusting.

DANI: Oh, isn’t this walker cute?

ANTONIO: The elephants are nice.

FRANKIE: Research has shown that walkers aren’t necessary. Babies can walk on their own.

YOLTIC: Frankie, get up!

[Antonio watched as his loved ones interacted. This was... pleasant. It always was, but this time he truly got to relax and take it in. As much as going against his grandfather stressed him out, it also felt incredibly freeing.]
