I personally subscribe to the idea that Adventurer Zenos shows his affection and appreciation for his peers in very odd ways (like yoinking the Students' taxes and dealing with their expenses and maybe also paying for some of their expenses but shhh).

zenos: heat without light

thinking once again about zenos, and doing a close reading of some of his language around fire. most quotes below are his direct dialogue unless otherwise noted (and all in-game text taken, as ever, from the wonderful xiv.quest). spoilers through endwalker follow.

fire imagery (including, at the conclusion of both stormblood and endwalker, candle imagery) is closely associated with zenos for a few straightforward reasons. first, the idea of a roaring and destroying thing which must consume life to burn all the hotter...it ties very directly into his whole deal with violence as a source of existential meaning and site of self-expression. also, stormblood, fires of war, easy line to draw there. plus, y'know, a nice fiery background is iconic franchise imagery for a long-haired prettyboy with a big ol' katana and a complicated relationship with nihilism.

(eagle-eyed viewers will note this is actually technically elidibus-as-zenos in the shadowbringers trailer. to them i say shhhhh)

fire imagery is probably the thing zenos brings up second most often after hunt metaphors. what's interesting, though, is that almost every time he brings it up, he's focused only on fire as a source of heat and as something which consumes. like, a candle is a symbol frequently deployed to evoke the idea of a light in the darkness, but the only thing that interests zenos about candles is that they burn out. fire to him is a funeral pyre, a ravenous inferno.

(incidentally, the pre-endwalker patches provide a textual reason for why zenos might be fixated on fire imagery and specifically fire as an agent of destruction and not a source of light: it's plausibly because of the final days recurring nightmare dear ol' great-grandad gave him, naturally)

zeno's fire is pure heat without light, as his very own boss fight in ala mhigo spells out.

zenos is quite clear in how he deploys his metaphors: if he is heat, the warrior of light is, uh, light.

where zenos is the lightless spark, the warrior of light is, quite famously, a spark that "burned bright as a star." the warrior of light has the heat of flame ("so very hot[, e]nough to set my soul aflame") but, critically, the light that zenos lacks.

at the very end of zenos's arc, the language around fire in the final endwalker solo duty unites the two metaphors, zenos's "burning" fire and the warrior of light's "brilliant" fire. the duty text straight up says your souls are on fire in response to one another.

there is only one place in the game zenos talks about his own fire in terms of light. if you tell him in the final dialogue choice (denoted here with bullets) that you can't deny his assessment of you, or that you deny him entirely and promise to strike him down, either way he seems satisfied with the light the WoL is bringing and promises heat.

but if the warrior of light is non-committal, and refuses to state a reason behind their final fight, then and only then will zenos state what he believes both of you know to be true: that the heat and light of fire are inextricable, and that both serve as proof of life's existence and meaning in the face of death.

to be incandescent is to glow from heat, to be white-hot; in incandescence, fire's apparent duality is revealed for a falsehood. in the end, zenos acknowledges heat and light are one and the same.
