Now for Vypra, from GI Joe Classified. The Python Patrol version, specifically. Funny to make that clarification since I doubt we'll ever see a mainline release outside the Python Patrol, but hey. We'll see.

Despite being made up of all reused parts, Vypra proves to be a very fun and unique feeling figure. Maybe that's just my ninja bias speaking, though. I love the skull mask in particular, fun inclusion. My main complaint about this figure is that the butterfly joints are literally useless. There is no movement to be gained there. Ab articulation is also a bit restrained. Still, hip articulation is very functional and those drop downs actually come in handy since they get the legs out of the skirt's way. Ankle articulation is excellent too, great forward range.

I'm quite pleasantly surprised by this figure, I really like it. Vypra is a very minor character in the series, but that just means I'm free to pose her however I please. She's essentially a blank slate to tell fun stories with and isn't one of that the most fun part of action figures?

prince sebastian

he’s me but isn’t also. enthusiastic but borderline incompetent prince who’s the author of the big poem that’s asadon (the characters know they’re made up and mostly don’t mind). spends his days attending brunches and butterfly races and fielding complaints about his ruling / writing

gabapentin alphabet

a yellow pill who grew up to be a clown and is learning to live with that. got to asadon pretty recently after firstchapter life on the ground and is learning to live with that too. rockstar by night, co-head of the sleep department also by night. the main love interest in the story despite being scared of intimacy

seroquel dolor

a ninefoot blue marshmallow man who loves order and control. co-head of the sleep department. in between making dreams and monitoring sleepers, spends their time perpetually organising filecards, sparring with gabapentin, and pining for their ex prince sebastian (and for gabapentin also but don’t tell)

fair isolde and tristram

not those ones. a t4t couple who traded clothes and names and escaped an archetype of medieval times on a really fast horse to live in asadon. tristram makes bad music on a laptop and isolde trains butterflies to race each other. they are also stars in the sky (long story)

angel number

an angel. needs to clean her room. works in the god complex making god for the citizens of asadon. frequently vexed by her coworkers, the infants, who are thousands of pink devil babies. usually just wants a cigarette or her lunch break, but always happy to gossip or help her friends with a problem

helen

chimera. works as an office manager and frequently eats her assistants. but her current one, oedipus, seems to be there to stay, although she won't admit she likes him

isabella and lorenzo

yes those ones. from keats's pot of basil, except lorenzo can talk. isabella is his fiercest defender, lugging him place to place so he doesn't miss out on experiences, and he is just happy to have woken up again after dying, even if it's in a bunch of dirt

bingo

blowup doll who has zero interest in sex. plays keyboards and electric things in a band with gabapentin and works as a bouncer at the local music venue. blunt and no-nonsense, but cares about her friends, even if she hates heart-to-hearts

valerie

a dust bunny who plays drums in a band with bingo and gabapentin. timid, intellectual

kurt cobain

kurt cobain. bartender at the same club bingo works at

letitia

shy. doesn’t want to be on this list thank you

starby and valentine

shapes. imagery technicians who help the prince with metaphors and things. in love with each other. not much else to say about them

the castle kitchens

sort of a character. it talks. it likes visitors

the duvetlump

gabapentin’s exboyfriend from down on the ground. he’s what you get when you have a nightmare and tossturn your blankets into a big pile. sweat and fear and all. would describe himself as nonthreatening and sensitive. gabapentin would disagree

the alphabet family

a mother a father and twentysix pagethin siblings who fit neatly into gender roles and manilla folders. work in the word factory producing words for people to read, mark, and eat

To help relaunch the G.I. Joe toyline, Hasbro decided to commission a comic book series and a cartoon series. The comic series was picked up by Marvel. According to Larry Hama, he was given the book by Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter after everyone else turned it down. He was able to use concepts he had already devolped for a Nick Fury spin-off called Action Force. As he prepared for the series, he created filecards on the various characters. Hasbro loved this and decided to use them as part of the packaging of the toys. Marvel was behind the creation of Cobra, as they reasoned the Joes needed someone to fight. The name Cobra has been credited to Archie Goodwin. G.I. Joe became a major hit for Marvel under Larry Hama and ran for 155 issues (plus Special Missions, Annuals, Order of Battle, and Transformers cross-over series). 16 years after the last issue, IDW picked up the license and published another 145 issues plus spin-offs and limited series. More recently, Image/Skybound had continued the series with Larry Hama at the helm, starting with issue 301. The first issue of the original run had two stories. It was published with a cover date of June 1982. Larry Hama created the Baroness. She was designed by Herb Trimpe in this issue. She was originally designed just for the comic but became so popular in the comic and cartoon she received her own figure. The issue was also the first comic appearance (in Earth 91274/the same designation as the Transformers) of Breaker, Clutch, Flash, Grand Slam, Grunt, Hawk, Rock n Roll, Scarlett, Short-Fuze, Snake-Eyes, Stalker, Steeler, Zap, General Flagg, General Austin, Shooter, Cobra Commander, Gregor, Cobra Officer, Cobra Trooper, Cobra Technician, Dr Burkhart, Col Sharif, HAL, Hydrofoil LCT, JUMP, MOBAT, RAM, VAMP, Fort Wadworth, and the Pit. The issue also included pin-ups. The first issue established that the Joe's cover was as Chaplain's Assistants and their base hidden beneath the motor pool. According to issue one, the Joes formal name was Counter Terrorist Group Delta. In "Operation Lady Doomsday" the Joes were tasked with saving nuclear physicist and anti-military proponent Dr Burkhart from Cobra. Not all the Joes were gung ho about saving her, but Hawk pointed out, "We each took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. That Constitution guarantees the right of every citizen to disagree with the government." Scarlett translated Snake-Eyes sign language saying B-52 bombing would be more practical and less risky as the safty of one person didn't seem to outway the safty of the world. Hawk reminded them that they were the good guys and there were civilians on the island. On the island in question, Doctor Burkhart totally expected the government to bomb the island off the face of the Earth rather than try to rescue her. Once the Joes had infiltrated the island and Scarlett and Snake-Eyes got a visual on Dr Burkhart, Scarlett admitted looking at Snake-Eyes, "You may not do much talking -- but I know what you're thinking. One well placed shot and we could scrub this mission and be home free." Unlike his cartoon counterpart, Cobra Commander in the comic showed cunning and military tactical skill throughout the issue. He also ruthlessly ordered the civilians on the island to be executed so they couldn't assist the Joes. Flash felt reaponsible for their deaths. Breaker felt they should bury them. Anyway, I got some waterproof-when-dried "write & draw" ink, put it in two of my fountain pens (with different nibs), and doodled a bit on 10x15 cm/ 4x6 inch filecards.

the best (and worst) part about writing transformers fanfic is when you're writing something that includes canonically named characters that have no other given information. trying to flesh out the disappeared cybertronians on the necroworld is so strange bc they're all technically their own named characters but for most of them there is like. no information for them.

all of these names and there's NOTHING to base them off of. it's an empty sandbox to do whatever the hell i want with it (aka giving ravage a tiny army that he brings to sanctuary <3)

What I find fun is that the Satellite that the Overkill program is housed on has some subtle visual simularities ot the original Overkill toy, chiefly in terms of color.

I suspect that Overkill is also going to be the solution to Destor's ongoing issue with the BATs and their inability to distinguish friend from foe.

From Overkill's original filecard:

"OVERKILL began as an experimental prototype for the third generation of B.A.T.s, but because of his advanced micro-computers and enhanced tactical logic programs, the cost projections were too high for profitable mass-production. He might have continued to gather dust on a shelf in the Cobra research labs if COBRA COMMANDER hadn't decided to utilize him as a battlefield commander for the android troopers. It was Cobra Commander's idea to add a voice synthesizer program to repeat demoralizing slogans at deafening volumes. Overkill's primary job is to operate the destructive Cobra Earthquake battle vehicle."

Whether this means that Overkill's gettign an android body of its own, or its going to be reprogrammed and then all the BATs are hooked up to it while Overkill itself remains staitonary is TBD.

Okay! Destro #4!!

We start off with the twins continuing to scheme after Destro's apparent death. Of course they are. We surely wouldn't expect anything else.

We get some more of Destro musing about the US government and their violent history and their partnership with people like him.

Also, something curious he found-

The US government got ideas from Duke's report of Starscream and digging around. The possibility we're getting Transformers' Nightbird is increasing!!

I saw concerns from GI Joe fans about how General Flagg might become an antagonist.

For the moment, it's looking like not? Or, at the very least, he may become an antagonist who thinks he must Make The Hard Choices.

Now for Astoria!! She does her usual rich heiress who's never had to worry about anything ever, but Destro shows up to her party!

She is surprisingly distressed, considering that, the last time we saw her, he had just saved her life. 👀

OH! OH! ASTORIA HAS TAKEN HER TECH JINXING FROM G1 UP A NOTCH!!! AND SHE WAS THE ASSASSIN THAT TRIED KILLING HIM!!

The jinx is actually the work of her father.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL THEY DID!!

Bonkers! I think this reveal also recontextualizes this scene from the first issue of this mini series.

She's less marveling about the explosions and all that and more at what she knows to be her and her father's tech.

I think this is a pretty fun take on Astoria! Not that she's gotten much official attention from Hasbro since her one episode with Powerglide. My own interpretation was less on the tech and combat side, but more as a cunning businesswoman. I do think it's funny that, in the letters section, Dan Watters expressed surprise that readers caught onto them using a one shot character from the 80s so quickly. Astoria is one of the most memorable humans in the entirety of G1 Transformers!

The issue ends with the twins, after going through Destro's files, meeting up with Cobra Commander, promising that their goals are more inline with his than Destro's are! It'll be interesting how Destro reacts.

I really enjoyed this issue and reading it turned around a sour mood for me (I had to run around a mall for ~30 minutes looking for a stupid Amazon delivery drop-off).

The Cobra Missile Command Headquarters was released boxed in late 1982 and 1983 as a Sears Exclusive. The box included a filecard holder and three action figures - Cobra, Cobra Commander, and Cobra Officer. The set was discontinued in 1984.
