Yunikina - a SN + Anto mashup

Yunikina's hair was also giving me headache to convert. First that long ass ponytail not only didn't look good in TS3 (imo), but when I tried to resize it, it got worse. Plus, you know, transparency issues, one cannot convert SN hairs without dealing with it at least once. Then I remembered that there was that Anto ponytail that looked like SN one, and then I just sticked Yunikina's bangs onto it ^^

Most of this stuff's pretty clear-cut, but I wanted to just explain a few quick things.

The Alfheim Light Crystals, Bifrost, Idunn Apple, and The Light all have Fullbright, so they always glow, even if you turn the lights off. (The Idunn Apple mesh is a wee too big for my liking, but oh well.)

Elven "Family" Lock as Decor (Animated)

Fully recolorable. This was cloned from a clock, so the pieces turn as the big/little hands turn on EA's clocks. I've never actually caught it at the right time when all the pieces properly align, esp. since I use the Time Mod like crazy and never really know what time it is in-game.

Fully recolorable, found under Plants. These leaves are HUGE, which is why I added a smaller version, cuz jfc. 😅

Jotnar Shrines as Wardrobe (10k Polys) (SN EP REQUIRED)

I apologize in advance for these. I don't really intend for them to be used as EA dressers--I just wanted something with open/closed door animations (so alas, I also had to squeeze the mesh down to fit EA's dimensions). But by god these are dumb AF if your sim actually tries to rifle around inside for clothes (which I ofc removed)--

--or Aesir forbid, they actually enter it to hide/portal travel to Narnia/woohoo. 😬 There is NOTHING on the other side, so your sim WILL be seen floating like a doofus behind the mesh (through the walls).

Anyways, if you pause your game during the .5 seconds that the doors are ever open, you'll be graced with all the effing hard work I went through to add as many Jotnar panel variations as possible:

The juice is regular kid-friendly juice, but the wine is strong alcohol only for adults (*cough* Kratos wtf were you thinking giving your kid 1000yr old alcohol to drink, someone call CPS on this fool! *cough*). So now your Spartan sims of all ages can safely & responsibly enjoy sippin on gin & juice~! 🥂 As always, the mesh clipping into their faces is out of control, but oh well.

Non-canon to the overall Crime Maxim au! As well as all the reblogs on this, if I continue.

I decided to play around with adding MR-SN in to flirt with VR-LA a bit! We get a very jealous Maxim.

CW: Maxim is disposing of a body at the start, so past violence and a dead body.

Maxim watched as the last small bag was tossed over the side of the bridge by one of his underlings, the body so torn apart nobody would recognize it even if it did escape the bags and rocks. The salt water certainly wouldn't help that either. This particular pest's work would likely fire them after a week without filing a report, and living alone, so by the time it was a reported, nobody would know who was in the bag without a lot of luck with all the other reports. "Go on ahead early." Maxim instructed the underling. "It's better to split separately. Go out of your way to go somewhere to get an extra albi."

And, not long after that, Maxim was alone, standing on the biking bath of a bridge over the ocean, the occasional car going past. If he walked across, there was a natural path down a beach. It wouldn't be the most unpleasant night walk, and he could double check to make sure everything was going as planned.

He made his way down, the beach more rocks than sand and making a distinct sound under his boots. It was surprisingly free of litter though, perhaps regularly cleaned up by somebody. At least the part of the bridge they threw the parts off of meant they'd be free from discovery by this person. After a bit more walking, he spotted a lantern and heard a familiar laugh. VR-LA's laugh.

Maxim spotted VR-LA sitting with a man on a somewhat smoother section of rock. The man was rather flamboyantly waving about his hands as he chattered about something, getting occasional laughs and a constant smile out of VR-LA. Maxim ducked slightly to the side to avoid any light, watching for a long moment.

MR-SN's story settled back into silence, the pair just staring at the sky. There weren't any stars due to the brightness of the city, but it was still nice. VR-LA wasn't sure he had ever gotten to relax like this, getting to sit out by the water in the middle of the night. He wouldn't have even during the day in the past. VR-LA looked away from the sky, eyes drawn towards MR-SN who he realized was looking back at him.

"What?" VR-LA asked, smiling a bit, not able to help it.

"You're shivering a bit." MR-SN replied, sitting up and pulling off his jacket. VR-LA hadn't even noticed. It was put over him like a blanket, warm from MR-SN's skin.

"...thank you-" VR-LA began, only to cut himself off as he spotted a figure in the distance.

"Hm..?" MR-SN hummed, following his gaze to the now retreating figure. "Oh, just somebody taking a walk. Looks like they think we're up to something and decided to run off rather than see more."

"Up to something? I don't think we're doing anything illegal."

MR-SN chuckled at that. "Of course, my friend."

the tl;dr

IRON CROWN as a free comic is now off of wordpress and can be viewed by a neat, robust HTML/CSS/JS comic template called rarebit! effectively nothing has changed for the reader, beyond expecting a little more reliability of uptime over the years.

all comic pages and previously paywalled patreon posts can also be downloaded in this art dump for free, as mentioned in the new author's notes.

the long story:

When talking shop about site/platform moves under this handle, I think it's useful to realize that us (taboo) kink artists live in an actively adversarial internet now, compared to five years ago.

meaning that we have to live with an expectation that 99% of platforms (including registrars and hosting, let alone sns sites) will ban/kick us without warning. this might explain the overly cautious/defensive way we discuss technologies - weighing how likely (and easily) the tool can be used against us vs the perks.

for example: has a harassment mob bullied the platform owners into quietly dropping lolisho artists? trans artists? does the platform/technology have a clear, no-bullshit policy on drawn kink art (specifically third rail kinks like noncon)? does the platform have a long history of hosting r18 doujin artists/hentai publishers with no issue? does the company operate in a nation unfriendly to specific kinks (eg fashkink artists fundamentally incompatible with companies based in germany, when other kinks might be OK?). i talk with a few different groups of artists daily about the above.

but that gets tiring after a while! frankly, the only path that's becoming optimal long-term is (a) putting kink art on your personal site, and if possible, (b) self hosting the whole thing entirely, while (c) complementing your site with physical merch since it's much harder to destroy in one go.

with that said - I've been slowly re-designing all of my pages/sub-domains as compact 'bug out bags'. lean, efficiently packed with the essentials, and very easy to save and re-upload to a new host/registrar near instantly (and eventually, be friendly to self-hosting bandwidth costs since that's now a distant goal).

how does this look in theory, you ask?

zero dependencies. the whole IRON CROWN comic subdomain is three JS files, a few HTML files, one CSS file, and images. that's it.

no updates that can be trojan horse'd. I'm not even talking about malware though that's included; I'm talking about wordpress (owned by the same owners as tumblr cough) slipping in AI opt-outs in a plug-in that's turned on by default. I used to think wordpress was safe from these shenanigans because wordpress-as-a-CMS could be separate from wordpress-as-a-domain; I was wrong. they'll get you through updates.

robust reliability through the KISS principle. keep it simple stupid. malware/DDOS'ing has an infinitively harder time affecting something that doesn't have a login page/interactive forms. You can't be affected by an open source platform suddenly folding, because your "starter" template is contained files saved on your desktop (and hopefully multiple backups...). etc.

so how does this look in practice?

To be fair, you're often trading convenient new shiny UI/tools for a clunkier back-end experience. but i think it's a mistake to think your art site has to look like a MIT professor's page from 1999.

with IRON CROWN, I've effectively replicated it from a (quite good) comic template in wordpress to 98% of the same layout in pure HTML/CSS/JS via rarebit. Should rarebit's website go "poof", I've got the initial zip download of the template to re-use for other sites.

I frankly have a hard time recommending rarebit for an actively updating webcomic since you personally might be trading too many advantages like SEO tools, RSS feeds, etc away - but for a finished webcomic that you want to put in "cold storage" - it's amazing. and exactly what I needed here.

Another secretive figure of TFI, Miss Kimiko acts as a middle man for the mysterious Administrator. From writing the contracts for the mercenaries, sorting out Saxon Hale's strange ideas with his assistant Bidwell, teaching Miss Pauling mercenary skills (because the Administrator definitely didn't teach Miss Pauling herself), running the mercenary tutorials, and many other menial tasks, this tired tattooed lady is certainly more storied than she says! Notes: I found Rico at Helen’s damnable side project. After I singlehandedly destroyed Helen’s damnable side project WITH MY BARE FISTS, I asked him for a demonstration of his skills. Boy is a crack shot if I ever saw one! Offered him a job on the spot. He seemed overjoyed, as he should be! But then he seemed sad, which was the damnest thing. He said he wanted the job but could not accept it until something something soul searching something ‘getting his shit together’.

Gave him full base access, leave to fill in on needed mercenary spots, and provisions when requested. Have his word that he will take position. I am not sure how long ‘getting one’s shit together’ takes, but I do hope he won’t dally too long! There are animals that need shot and punched out by the fists of SAXTON HALE! and his trusty side gunman.

Name: Rico Andrew Black

Age: 37

Rico was adopted at a young age from an Australian orphanage, to be used as part of a side project by the Administrator- an elite mercenary team, honed by intense training, genetic alteration, and mental control to eliminate Teams that Helen felt were too 'compromised'. Members of Team BLAK included similarly acquired orphans as well as members of the R&D Team, along with one unaltered 'control group' member with a suitable lack of morals and lust for murder.

Rico grew up about as well adjusted as you can expect someone raised to be an organic weapon to grow up- rebellious and arrogant as anyone who knows he can't be outshot, and in love with the concept and causation of chaos as anyone thrashing against a stifling environment their entire lives. These acts of rebellion were tolerated for a surprisingly long time, until one day. Rico still can't recall what that final straw was- all he remembers is the absolute fury on the face of Dr. Lang- Team Medic, Head of R&D Medical, and, on paper anyway, his adoptive father. As punishment for whatever that forgotten transgression was, Rico was shown his leash and chain- code words implanted in his mind to force him to obey commands given to him. He was also informed he would be kept on a tighter tether from then on.

If that was the only punishment meted out to the Sniper that day it would have been distressing enough. But there was something unintended that occured- Alexandre Coeurnoir, the Team Spy, had overheard everything, and wasn't about to let full control of another human being go to waste. From then on, Rico's life went from stifling to unbearable as he found himself at the mercy of Alexandre's every whim, unable to either tell anyone about what was happening or escape from it. He was helplessly bound in the web of a terrible spider and, as the Spy teased, there was no hope of rescue. No one would come to save him nor care enough to. Any attempts to run away was met with an eventual undeniable pull to return, and he was as blocked from taking a more permanent exit as he was from telling a soul about his torment. His only means of coping came from alcohol, nicotine, disassociation, and his one joy- his beloved motorcycle, Baby. He would ride into the desert for days at a time, denying the call as long as his shackled mind would allow, and pretend he was the apex predator he once fancied himself as.

And then…

With the other members of Team BLAK either dead or scattered to finally live their own lives, Rico has kept himself busy keeping his promise to Saxton Hale. He lives primarily at Sawmill, in a treehouse he found in the forest and has since made his own, only going indoors when winter makes it too cold to be outside at length. While solitude suits him, he has made a handful of friends and is slowly but surely learning the one thing he was never taught- how to be a human being.

“in the past terms, we’ve allowed everyone who has joined legacy agency the option to stay in dorms or find their own place. however, due to the incident that happened a while back and how our bosses have been telling us to be ever so more watchful towards all of you, we’ve changed our rules. similar to last term, every person who joins the subsidiary will stay in the dorms for one term. if you have been under probation before, then that will last two terms — one for the term where you were under probation and another to follow every new person that joins us.” INYOUNG pauses to look at JINHO, who then continues on with the explanation.

“for the ones that have gone through one term in this path without any warnings, punishments, or scandals during that time, they will be given the option to live offsite. those of you confirmed to stay will be able to move into your new dorms starting from today. otherwise, for those of you who have chosen to stay in your own place, you will need to pack up and leave your current dorms starting from today as well. and just like AECHA has said in the past, just because you aren’t under our watch 24/7 anymore does not mean that you can go crazy. if we hear of any inappropriate behavior, you will be immediately brought back to the dorms.” JINHO looks at each one of the models, making sure that they know and are aware of the new dorm changes.

COMMERCIAL TRAINING

“some of the models will be busy with their own individual schedules or having their own vacation, so those people will be focusing on that in the meantime. but for our two new models who have just joined us, you will be participating in CF TRAINING along with the two new actors during that time since there is a contest that i’m about to tell you later that might interest many of you. one may consider it to be boring to be attending the commercial training, but actually this won’t be held in the legacy building. in fact, it’ll be held in DAEJEON and take up three weekends.” INYOUNG explained to them while letting the other two male managers give KIYONG and YUTAI the files regarding the training.

as mentioned, the training will be held for three weekends ( FEBRUARY 8 & 9, MARCH 8 & 9, and MARCH 29 & 30 ). each of the weekends will revolve around these categories; COMMERCIAL MODELING ( eg., posing techniques, facial expressions and emotion control, branding and marketing yourself, runway and movement training ), COMMERCIAL ACTING ( eg., voice projection & articulation, improvisation, on-camera techniques, storytelling in a short timeframe ), and VLOGGING ( eg., technical setup and self-taping basics, brand and relatability, product demonstration and interaction ).

for each weekend, they will be staying in a rented house nearby with one of the lgc agency managers and head back home by sunday night. while they will have some free time to explore DAEJEON on saturdays, they must be accompanied by either the lgc agency manager OR one of the manager’s assistants. the training itself consists of 15 students maximum ( including SEYEON, SANGWON, KIYONG, and YUTAI ) and there will be three coaches ( each one teaching a category mentioned earlier ).

SAMSUNG CONTEST

“now, for the exciting part!” JINHO began revealing what he felt was the most exciting part in their schedules. “samsung is interested in offering a yearlong modeling contract for a few LGC AGENCY artists. however, the company felt that since there are so many artists it would be best to hold a cf vlog contest amongst all of you. you have from MARCH 17-APRIL 1 to send in your submissions via e-mail. for some of our older models, this may be advantageous to them because if they wish to do so, they could do the filming aspect of it during their PARIS trip. as for our newer models, you could do it during the last weekend of your training in DAEJEON. even though we’re allowing you to film content during those places, we would like to remind JISOO and SEUNGHYUN that you cannot film your vlog while preparing for the WARRIOR BAEK DONG SOO production. we’ll send you all of the important rules and restrictions related to this contest. my advice for all of you is to start brainstorming ideas and to make it as creative as possible!”

around the first week of MARCH, each LGC AGENCY artist will be given the choice of promoting only ONE of the GALAXY products ( galaxy s24, galaxy z fold, galaxy watch ultra, galaxy tab s10 ultra, OR galaxy buds ) and incorporating it in a 5 minute vlog ( the chosen product must be shown in at least 80% of that 5 minute vlog ). the product selected will be a prototype and it’s up to the muse how they would like to film the video, since they will be almost everything by themselves ( filming, conceptualizing, etc. ) they will not be doing the major editing ( because a lgc editor will take care of that ) but they can send in notes as to how they would like the edits to look like. during this time, there will be some staffs recording the behind the scenes content of the process.

for SANGHYUN, since he currently has a modeling contract with LG, he will not be eligible to participate in the contest but he can be a part of the behind the scenes content ( eg. giving another lgc agency artist feedback on their footage so far, helping them brainstorm ideas, etc. )

as a reminder, if you have at least ONE modeling contract slot available, you are eligible to participate in the contest.

PARIS TRIP

HYUNHEE, JISOO, SEUNGHYUN, JINSEO, and SANGHYUN will be at PARIS from MARCH 24-APRIL 5. while part of this time will be spent to do whatever they want ( as long as they are accompanied with one of the managers ), there will be some events to attend to.

to help the current MODEL BRAND owners gain some more knowledge for their brands, there will be three classes available ( it is mandatory for the brand owner to attend their assigned course, but for HYUNHEE and SEUNGHYUN they have the option to attend one or multiple classes to get some ideas for their model brand ).

JEWELRY MAKING & TECHNIQUES ( MANDATORY FOR JISOO ): class lasts around 8 hours, including a tour of some of the most iconic jewelry houses in paris.

CANDLE & PERFUME WORKSHOP ( MANDATORY FOR JINSEO ): class lasts around 4 hours, including a tour of a famous family-run perfumery.

WATCHMAKING WORKSHOP: class lasts around 5 hours, including a tour of a luxury watch boutique.

all of the workshops will be hosted on different days.

then on APRIL 3, they will be visiting the VOGUE PARIS headquarters where they will be meeting some of the staffs and have a group interviewer with one of the reporters as the MODELS discuss their thoughts about their paris trip, memorable events and experiences, and what they’ve learned so far. the interview will be released on the MAY 2025 issue of VOGUE PARIS.

HYUNHEE and SEUNGHYUN are now eligible to have their own model brands. for this, they will each be asked to conceptualize new products and a commercial film for those products.

as a new brand owner, HYUNHEE and SEUNGHYUN will be asked to pitch in details regarding the model brand as a whole along with a cf concept. the cf will be quite short, lasting less than 1 minute so the storyline will have to be concise. as for the PRODUCTS, each brand owner is only allowed to create 1-5 ITEMS and all of the items must be shown in the cf.

These last days I've been struggling with some hair conversions, mostly with the damned transparency issues. Initially i thought that a SN hair with fewer groups* = a hair that will have very minimal issues. The previous hairs I converted (nikki's and netga) had less than 5 groups, and therefore almost imperceptible issues. But one of the difficult hairs I tried to convert had like 3 groups and BOY, IT WAS A STRUGGLE and I sort of gave up. I guess that in the end you have to be lucky with the mesh that you pic, or have extra patience/skills to get rid of these damn issues.

*Shining Nikki meshes are separated by groups instead of being everything in one single group like The Sims. If you want to know more about converting thing from SN, check my tutorial!

Chapter 1: Keep It Under Wraps! Chapter 2: Don't Spill The Beans!

"What are you feeding him?" Miglo demanded, glaring. He entered the kitchen nook and started pulling open doors at random.

Theobe ignored him until they'd finished pouring the milk, and then offered Miglo a mug. "Here's your coffee."

Miglo accepted it without acknowledgement, but he did take a sip.

Then he opened the cabinet under the sink, and whirled around. "Why's there ash in your garbage? What have you been burning? Are you making Filbo cook?"

The ash had nothing to do with food, but Miglo sounded so incredulous that Theobe couldn't resist setting him straight. "He cooks twice a week," they said, pointing at the fridge. "It's on the chore wheel."

Actually, it was more that Filbo got cooking lessons from Theobe twice a week, but Filbo had been making definite progress. He'd already figured out how to judge which size of saucepan to use, and it had been almost a week since Theobe had had to remind him about keeping his other paw out of the way when chopping vegetables. He'd been getting better and better at chopping the vegetables evenly, too.

"Um, and that's just paper ash," Theobe continued. "Snorpy always insists we burn his letters." That was a little bit of misdirection that Snorpy would probably appreciate. The ash in the garbage wasn't the original letter, which Snorpy had sent from an undisclosed location at his uncle's farm, but a decoded copy that Theobe and Filbo had made earlier that day. It probably wasn't necessary to burn the copies, but it was what Snorpy wanted, and it made Theobe feel like a real spy.

"Snorpy?" Miglo demanded. "Sn-- That's not even a real name!"

Theobe shrugged. He really was insistent on nitpicking everything. "It's short for Snorpington. Like that show about the fake detective?" It was an uncommon name, but not that uncommon.

Miglo walked off through the door Filbo had left through, still holding his coffee. Theobe followed quickly, to find him staring at one of their bookshelves.

He took the Grumpy Baby in the "Mayo" sash from the top shelf and brandished it. "This is not an officially licensed Grumpy Baby toy!"

Apparently it was easier to memorise them all the Grumpy Babies than Theobe had thought, if Filbo, Gramble, and Miglo had all done it. Maybe Theobe should get in on that. "It's custom. Gramble made it. For Filbo." He'd made Theobe one as well. It had a little press hat, which was cute. They kept it in their office.

"That's not a real--" began Miglo. "W-- No. It is. Very common name." He put the Grumpy Baby back and leaned over to inspect the cassettes on the shelf below. "What is this? G-Files? Grump Peaks… Collector's Edition? My son isn't into this trash!"

Theobe sighed. "Those are mine. You're kind of grasping at straws now." They half hoped Filbo would come back soon, but also it wasn't Filbo's job to try to control his dad's temper.

Miglo turned around suddenly, and Theobe was starting to wonder how he didn't get dizzy from doing that so often. "I'm sick of listening to you mocking me. We both know you were never on that island, and no matter what threats you made, how you got Filbo to play along, I'm not leaving without him!" He poked Theobe in the chest. "You're some kind of monster, you know that? Stop preying on a good-natured kid, and find your own stories! You're gonna be doing a lot of time when I'm through with you."

"I'm a journalist!" said Theobe. What kind of hack did he think they were? "If I say I went somewhere, I went there. I've got pages of notes and interviews to prove it!"

They frowned, remembering what kind of information was in their pages of notes and interviews. It could be a problem if Miglo actually wanted to see them.

Miglo didn't ask. He said "Now where is my son? Is he really in the bathroom?"

"I guess so," said Theobe with a shrug. "That's where I thought he he was going." Filbo did sometimes excuse himself to the bathroom when he got overwhelmed, but if he'd eaten that whole pack of gummy grumps, the bathroom was where he needed to be.

Miglo took a swig of coffee and headed for the hall door, and Theobe followed, hoping he wasn't planning to barge in. He'd clearly made up his own mind about what was going on, and they weren't sure what they could say to convince him otherwise. At least without revealing the whole truth. He didn't even seem inclined to believe what Filbo told him.

Also, what was all that stuff about Theobe preying on a good-natured kid? Filbo was barely a year younger than they were.

In the hall, Miglo hammered on the door with the toilet paper decal. "Filbo! Are you in there?"

"Oh, hey dad!" said Filbo, from the other side. "I'll be out, uh… soon." He laughed slightly.

"Make sure you wash your hands," said Miglo, with a glance at Theobe.

Theobe wondered what Miglo would think about the bathroom arrangements in Snaxburg, and decided not to bring it up.

Miglo was already opening the door opposite the bathroom. "What is this?" he demanded, peering inside.

Theobe peeked in behind him. "That's my room." It looked like Filbo had taken down the certificate of completion he'd made them, though not the alien taxonomy poster next to it. He hadn't touched the books, magazines and newspapers strewn all over the floor either, so Theobe hoped it looked lived-in enough to not seem suspicious.

Not that there was anything to be suspicious about, if you weren't Miglo Fiddlepie.

Miglo pulled open the next door up, and Theobe said "And that's my office."

Filbo had cleaned up in there as well. The desk looked strangely bare with the journal closed and the loose notes cleared away. Even the expedition photo was missing.

Apparently this was another thing that required Miglo to turn around as fast as he could. "You made your second room into an office? I knew you weren't giving him anywhere to sleep!"

"Uh…" said Theobe. At this point, Miglo had progressed past grasping at straws, and was just outright making things up to be upset about. They weren't going to try pointing that out this time, though. "No, Filbo's room is over there." They pointed at the door opposite their office.

Filbo's room, or the spare room. Whichever it was now.

Miglo took a look inside, and didn't seem to find anything to criticise immediately.

"We didn't have time to grab much before the island exploded…" said Theobe, to forestall any complaints about how empty it was.

"The island--?!" Miglo began. "Never mind. Oh, you let him have a record player and a boombox."

"Those are just his," said Theobe, following him in.

There were piles of meticulously labelled party mixtapes on one side of the boombox. Filbo claimed he had one for every occasion, and he'd even managed to make a pretty good mixtape entirely out of all the Do The Wiggle remixes that Wiggle kept gifting them.

On the other side, so Filbo didn't get them mixed up, were a couple of Grumpin Park cassettes in their cases. Miglo picked one of them up, and Theobe held their breath, but he just nodded slightly, put it down, and moved on to Filbo's card shelf.

There were only a few cards on it, and almost half of them were encouraging notes from Chandlo, but Filbo insisted that it was going to grow, and that his card shelf at home was so full he could barely fit anything new on there.

Miglo picked up the glitteriest card, and read the front aloud. "I'm Sorry." He opened it up and kept reading, with increasing incredulity. "Dear Filbo. I'm sorry for… bullying you so hard back on Snaktooth? I was really mad at your whole, like, life philosophy, but that's not an excuse, lol. You're actually pretty cool, like, in a lame way? XOXOX? Beffica?!'" He jabbed at the card with his other hand, almost spilling his coffee. "And she drew some kind of sideways happy face… Is this even a real apology letter?"

"She put a lot of effort into that," said Theobe.

She'd shown them her original attempt, and their first suggestion had been to begin it with something other than "Dear squeeb (j/k lol)". Sincerity did not come easily to her.

"Care to explain why he's still in contact with someone who bullied him?" said Miglo.

Theobe opened their mouth to suggest he ask Filbo, and Filbo rushed in, his paws dripping wet. He was still hiding his left arm out of view, but he'd got rid of Theobe's boots, and both feet were now clearly normal Grumpus paws.

"Dad, it's okay!" he said. "Beffica…" he laughed. "She was going through a lot. Well, we all were."

"Filbo," said Miglo. "Take your arm out from behind your back."

Filbo chuckled, and backed against the wall. "Uh, I'm good."

"Well," Miglo continued, "if you can't do that, at least tell me why you're so set on staying with this stranger! This isn't like you! Remember college?"

Filbo looked at Theobe. "They're not a stranger…"

"Then why didn't you know their last name when you called?" Miglo demanded.

"Oh, uh…" said Filbo. "Well, we didn't really need last names on the island. It wasn't like high school, with… six Befficas." He glanced at the card in Miglo's hand. "Just one… heh."

Miglo sighed. "I don't know what this Theoblab grump told you, but they're using you."

"Hey!" said Theobe, but Miglo was already leaving the room.

"I'm getting you out of here," said Miglo, as he walked, "no matter what."

Theobe and Filbo followed, with Filbo mouthing the word "sorry".

Miglo returned to the living room and grabbed the phone, then turned and leaned towards Theobe, so close that their noses were almost touching. "Listen to me, you… journalist. If you don't let my son go right now, I'm gonna make some calls, and you're gonna go to prison for a long, long time."

"Okay," said Theobe.

"Buddy, he's serious!" Filbo whispered. "H-he's gonna…"

Miglo leaned back, and grinned. "And you can forget about working as a journalist ever again."

That wasn't something he could do.

But Theobe glanced at Filbo's horrified face, and remembered what Miglo had said about Filbo's sister. It had seemed like an empty threat, but… Filbo had agreed. Filbo thought it had happened, and he was close to his dad, and his sister. If Filbo thought that Miglo had those kind of connections, and had seen him use them… maybe he had.

"Uh…" they managed. They were sure there was something sarcastic they could say, but all they could think about was that Miglo might be able to ruin their career whenever he felt like it. The thought was encroaching into the place they kept their words. "Uh, wait…"

"I'll reimburse you for the phone bill," Miglo added, putting his coffee on the table.

Filbo glanced at Theobe, then said "Dad, please don't call Poppy Barolb…"

Miglo balanced the receiver in the crook of his elbow, and held up both paws with all fingers extended. "I'll give you to the count of six."

"Don-- I--" said Theobe. Maybe he was bluffing.

Maybe he wasn't.

"Five…" said Miglo, putting down a finger.

All right, Theobe was too stressed to speak. It had been years since that had happened last, but they were a successful college graduate now, and they'd recently faced down several giant monsters and a whole hoard of smaller ones. They were definitely mature enough to break through this.

Miglo put down another finger. "Four…"

They just had to explain why Filbo was hiding his arm. They had promised Filbo they wouldn't tell Miglo about the Bugsnax, but they were sure he wouldn't mind.

Miglo lowered one arm. "Three."

Given the circumstances.

"Two… one…"

It was hard to see how Miglo could possibly freak out more than he already was, and that was what Filbo had said he was concerned about. So it'd probably be fine.

Miglo hesitated. "Nothing to say? Really?"

"Strawb…" said Theobe. No, that wouldn't have made sense anyway. Filbo hadn't had a strawberry arm for a while now.

Miglo put down his last finger. "Zero." He looked at Theobe for a second, then retreieved the phone and started dialling.

"Stop!" said Filbo.

Theobe hadn't been able to take their eyes off the phone, but now they turned to see that Filbo had pulled the phone cord out of the wall. And he'd done it with his left arm. The one that was still green and lettucey.

Miglo dropped the receiver. "Filbo! Your arm! What happened to your arm?"

"Filbo…" said Theobe.

"Neat, huh?" said Filbo, a little unsteadily. "I… I think it's a lettuce burrito?" He gave a fake-sounding laugh.

"No, it's not neat!" said Miglo, rushing to him and taking his arm. "What did that journalist do to you?!"

"Technically…" began Theobe. If the truth was going to suddenly come out, it might as well be the whole truth, and the whole truth was that Miglo was right. They'd given Filbo that Inchwrap. They had done that to him, and to most of the others as well.

"Dad, I did it to myself," said Filbo. "Bugsnax are real, and they're on Snaktooth Island, and I ate a lot of them, and… and that's why we had to come back."

"What?" said Miglo. He held up Filbo's unresisting arm and squinted at it. "Bugsnax? What are you talking about? You think… Bugsnax did that to you?"

"I know they did!" said Filbo, waving his free arm around. "Lizbert didn't wanna make it public until she was sure, cause, you know, Grumplantis, and then she wrote Buddy when she was sure, but by the time they got here, Liz was missing and everyone left town…" He shook his head. "Uh, the point is, we all thought Bugsnax were going to solve our all problems, but they're parasites, and they make you want them so they can, uh…" he frowned. "Make you… become them? Liz told us all about when we found her again… Buddy, you know more about Bugsnax than me. Can you explain it?" He smiled nervously.

Theobe seemed to be able to form words again, so they said "Sure." They'd done a lot of thinking about how to explain what had happened on the island if the opportunity came up, though they weren't sure if Miglo would listen. "The island has a number of ingenious tricks to keep grumps from leaving," they recited. "The currents, atmospheric anomalies, aggressive wildlife… But its best, and most effective method is the nature of the Bugsnax themselves. When Bugsnax are around, it's hard to even want to leave. Think of it like a pitcher plant. The Bugsnax are the nectar that attracts the prey, but also the prey's downfall."

They were proud of that metaphor, which they'd come up with after a suprisingly in-depth discussion with Wambus about carnivorous plants, but Miglo just snapped "What?"

"Uh," said Theobe, as Miglo took another sip of coffee, "the island produces Bugsnax, and somehow, being around Bugsnax make Grumpuses think the snax can solve their problems." The effects of the Bugsanx seemed to amplify issues that their victims already had, and Theobe was very interested to know how they did that. But not interested enough to go back to find out. They guessed.

"For me, I just wanted everyone to be friends!" said Filbo cheerfully. He frowned. "Wait, why did I think making sure everyone had Bugsnax would… do that?"

Theobe could think of a few reasons, and felt that he'd still been doing better than Floofty and their self-decapitation plot, but they didn't want to set Miglo off again. So they continued. "In truth, the entire island is a living organism, and that organism… is made of Grumpuses."

Another part they were pleased with, but Miglo just said "What's that supposed to mean?"

"The more the victim eats, the more they turn into Bugsnax," said Theobe, indicating Filbo's arm. "If they eat too many, they transform completely, and… lose themselves. They become part of the island." They weren't totally sure how that happened, because Lizbert hadn't been very specific, but they guessed it was a good thing that they weren't sure. If they'd seen it happen while they were on the island, then that would mean… one of the others would be dead. One of their friends would be dead. You couldn't take that back.

"They lose themselves…" said Miglo thoughtfully. He stared at Filbo's arm. "And that's gonna happen to you?! Lizbert dragged you to an island that lures in weak-willed people and eats them?!" He was shouting by now.

"Hey, I didn't say weak-willed!" Theobe protested. They were pretty sure they'd only been protected by their allergy. And they'd still got very into cataloguing the Bugsnax, as well as giving out as many as they could to the others. "Anyone can get caught up in it. That's why nobody should go there ever again."

"Dad, it's almost worn off," said Filbo, pointing at his foot with his untransformed hand. "I'll be fine, as long as I don't eat any more Bugsnax. And I won't! Even if there were any around here."

"You can't be sure of that," said Miglo.

"I can!" said Filbo, more forcefully than he usually spoke. "Because… because I'm not weak-willed, or a screw-up, and I am good at some things, and Dad, you can't protect me forever."

Miglo looked like he wanted to say something, but he just looked from Filbo to Theobe and then back again, and drank his coffee.

"Just trust me, Dad," said Filbo. "I'm twenty-six! You don't have to rescue me every time it looks like something bad might happen. You're mad at Lizbert for tricking me into going to Snaktooth Island, b-b-but I knew the whole time where we were going!" He took a deep breath. "I'm the one who didn't tell you, Dad. I-I was always gonna tell you, but I didn't wanna upset you and I never found the right time, and then Liz mentioned it because she thought you already knew…"

"You didn't want to upset me?" said Miglo softly.

"I wanna make my own decisions about… about making my own decisions," Filbo continued. "I… sometimes I kinda like it when it's up to me." He looked at Theobe. "In fact… I think I wanna stay here a little longer. Even after the Snax wear off. Uh, is that okay, Buddy?"

"You can stay as long as you want," said Theobe. They'd actually been worrying about when Filbo would decide to go home, they realised. They were sure he'd be fine, but… they weren't ready yet.

Filbo said "It's good to see you again, Dad, but I'm not coming home yet."

"You…" began Miglo. "I…" He seemed to rally. "You're being ridiculous. You're my son, and you need to come home right away."

"I don't think that's more important than what Filbo wants," said Theobe, who'd really thought Miglo was going to listen this time.

"He doesn't know what he wants!" snapped Miglo.

Nobody said anything for a second, including Miglo, who was staring at his own paws like he'd never seen them before.

Then he sighed. "Filbo, all I ever wanted was what was best for you." All of a sudden, he sounded exhausted. "If what's best for you is not being in your life anymore… Then that's what I'll do."

Filbo looked aghast. "No, Dad, that's not what I meant! Maybe you could… be a… little less… in my life?" He spoke so tentatively that it ended in a squeak. "Why don't we talk again… tomorrow? Tensions are… a little high. Right now."

"All right," said Miglo. He opened his arms, and he and Filbo hugged, Filbo with both arms this time. Miglo rubbed his arm where Filbo's lettuce hand had touched it, and added "Uh… sorry for trying to destroy your career."

The correct response to that would be that that was okay, but it wasn't okay. Instead, Theobe just said "Uh."

Miglo took one final swig of coffee, put the mug back down, said "And thanks for the coffee," and walked out.

"Heh," said Filbo, after the front door closed. "That went way better than I expected."

Theobe couldn't tell if he meant that or not. They said "Sorry for freezing up back there."

"No, no, I should be sorry!" said Filbo. "I should never had made you promise not to talk about Bugsnax." He laughed. "Your career is really important to you, huh?"

Theobe shrugged. "I guess so." If they couldn't be a journalist, then who were they?

"Well, I think your story is really great so far!" said Filbo. "Your editor's gotta accept it!"

"She has high standards," said Theobe. She'd earned them. "But… maybe she'll like it," She had to.

"And hey," said Filbo. "Even if she doesn't, you're really good at, uh, journalism. You can just get another job, right? At another newspaper…?"

"Uh…" said Theobe. "Right."
