Do you know fire cider? 🌿🔥
It's a well-known herbal remedy, perfect for countering colds, winter flus, and maintaining good general health. 🤒💪
Our recipe (adapted from the book "Medicinal Herbs" by Rosemary Gladstar) is super adaptable. You can customize it to your tastes, without too many rules, except one: keep it in the fridge for up to 6 months. You can add lemon 🍋, hot peppers 🌶️, various herbs 🌿, or even turn it into an oxymel by mixing in honey 🍯.
Ingredients:
1 medium-sized onion, diced
4 to 5 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped
45 to 60 ml (3 to 4 tablespoons) horseradish root, grated
45 to 60 ml (3 to 4 tablespoons) fresh organic ginger, grated
45 to 60 ml (3 to 4 tablespoons) fresh organic turmeric, grated
9% organic apple cider vinegar
1 litre Mason jar
Unpasteurized medicinal honey with thyme (optional)

It's Apple Harvest Time
A few weeks ago, I had a call from a friend that I have from the pool who asked me about cover crops and bees. This week he is taking a trip to various places in Ohio. He was getting ready to harvest a variety of apples and offered to give me all I could pick of apples and grapes. I took him up on his offer and I wound up with 2 5-gallon pails of McIntosh apples and 1 5-gallon pail of grapes.…

Fire Cider is an increasingly poplar herbal folk remedy that is a pleasant (if you like particularly hot foods) and easy way to boost natural health processes, stimulate digestion, warmed up on the on cold days. During the cold months, I take some most mornings as a way to steer away colds. I’ve often put some in hot water with lemon and honey, used it in a salad dressings, used in stir fry, etc. Because it is a folk preparation, I find the ingredients shift from year to year, adding and omitting specific herbs and ingredients. However, it always includes apple cider vinegar, garlic, onion, ginger, horseradish, and hot peppers, and honey. It typically is taken by the spoonful but can be adapted for taste and preference. ——————- 2 cups apple cider vinegar 1/2 to 1 cup honey 1/2 cup horseradish 8 cloves of garlic, chopped 1/2 onion 1/2 cup ginger 1/2 cup fresh turmeric OR 1 tbsp dried turmeric 1 sliced jalapeño 1/2 lemon 1/2 orange 1 tsp peppercorns 2 whole cinnamon sticks 2 rosemary sprigs 4 thyme sprigs Prepare ingredients and place them in a sterilized quart-sized glass jar. Pour the apple cider vinegar and honey in the jar until all of the ingredients are covered and the vinegar reaches the jar's top. I put a fermentation weight on mine, but that is just a preference. Use a piece of cheese cloth under the lid to keep the vinegar from touching the metal. Shake well. Store in a dark, cool place for a month, shaking daily. Once down, strain, bottle, and label.

I feel most like myself when I’m making a brew with powerful healing properties. This year I made up big batches of Fire Cider in five different varieties: Simple Cider, Musk Mallow, Nettle, Oregano and Rosehip/Tumeric. There was lots for my family, but also to give as gifts. Our world is sick (in more ways than one), so I thought it the perfect time to spread some healing.

Got to see the Fire Cider people publicly anouncing their victory yesterday. They went through a years-long legal battle to stop a company from stealing the name “fire cider”, which had been used in the herbal community for decades prior to the company trademarking it. Historic and precedent setting; we’re all very grateful for their work. . . . #traditionsnottrademark #herbalists #firecider #freefirecider https://www.instagram.com/p/B3lMqI_l46B/?igshid=12vbu0iqzkdr2

My first ever batch of fire cidre based on a recipe by @learningherbs. And because I am currently in dire need of cough medicine and the cidre will take a while, I also made some onion honey juice. It's better and more effective than any cough medicine I've ever found. Hopefully I can finally sleep tonight. . . . #herbalism #coughmedicine #firecider #witchywisdom #oldknowledge #folkwisdom #witchesofinstagram #witchblr #witcheswhimsy (hier: Berlin, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4FeTHsoMUT/?igshid=1aku7tj8zaf7

Repost @herbalacademy Student #regram by @rowanandsage: "Fire Cider 🔥 For colds, flus, fevers and winter wellness. Below you'll find a recipe for our base blend. We add a variety of other herbs specific to the immune and respiratory systems for our final product but the basics are the same! ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ingredients: ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Half Gallon sized glass jar with BPA-free plastic top (or wax paper square to go in between glass and metal lid) - 1 whole chopped onion - 1 head of chopped garlic - 1 cup fresh sliced horseradish root - 4-6 hot peppers (we used scotch bonnets, jalapenos, and cayenne) - 1/2 cup chopped ginger (we added the greens too because we had them so why not use them?!) - 1/2 cup of chopped turmeric - 1/2 cup of rosehips - 2 tsps black peppercorns - about a quart and a half of raw Apple Cider Vinegar ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Add all ingredients to your jar and shake it up real well. Open the jar and make sure all contents are submerged. Add ACV until everything is covered. Set in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks and shake daily. The contents will sink down within 2 weeks and you will be able to add more ACV as it goes; do so if you wish. This is the point where we typically add additional herbs like hyssop, mullein, rosemary, thyme, sage, or whatever other herbs are calling to us from the garden. After 4-6 weeks, strain and add equal amounts of honey. Take a few droppers or a shot daily to prevent winter illnesses. Fire Cider is a folk remedy that reminds us to use whatever is available and most potent in the season when we are making it. You can keep it real simple or add lots of things for specific ailments. Make it your own! #freefirecider" Have you made Fire Cider before? 💥 . . . . . #firecider #myherbalstudies #herbalremedies #herbalpreparations #studentshares #herbalacademy #applecidervinegar #fireciderforthepeople #firecidertonic #folkherbalism #folkremedies #folkherbalist #immunesystem #immunebooster #immunesupport #herbalist #herbalists #herbalistlife #herballifestyle #backtoourroots #herbalallies #DIYherbs #herblove #plantpeople #makeityourself https://www.instagram.com/p/B3t0Us2FhZ5/?igshid=1nshnhnqzucg6
