How to install Cave Story on your PocketCHIP
Before we begin
This guide may contain errors, so please tell me if you can't get it to work.
The game is unfortunately a bit unstable on the Pocket CHIP right now, so you might experience some crashes.
We are not deleting anything in this guide, so you might want to clean up in your files afterwards. This also means that I am not responsible if you break your Pocket CHIP in any way.
The files in this guide are downloaded from: - NXEngine by Caitlin Shaw - Port of NxEngine to the libretro API by twinaphex
So let's start!
First open the terminal.
And just to be sure that we are in the home folder write
cd
Install some dependencies that we need to run Cave Story
sudo apt-get install libsdl-ttf2.0-dev build-essential
Download NXEngine
wget http://nxengine.sourceforge.net/dl/nx-src-1006.tar.bz2
Download Cave Story files from GitHub
wget https://github.com/libretro/nxengine-libretro/archive/master.zip
Unpack NXEnginge
tar xf nx-src-1006.tar.bz2
Unpack Cave Story files
unzip master.zip
Move the Cave Story files to the NXEngine folder
mv ./nxengine-libretro-master/datafiles/Doukutsu.exe ./nx/ mv ./nxengine-libretro-master/datafiles/data ./nx/
Now we need to go into the nx folder and do some changes to the code before we make our files
cd ./nx/
Now comes the difficult part so try to stay focused (and remember if you do a mistake just delete the unpacked files, unpack again and try again :) )
We now open the settings.cpp file to edit the screen resolution so it will fit our small cute screens:
nano settings.cpp
Now change the line that says:
setfile->resolution = 2;
to
setfile->resolution = 1;
Now we need to change our input file so the buttons do as we like. The most important buttons to change are the F1-12 buttons as Pocket CHIP’s F1-12 buttons are not recognised properly:
nano input.cpp
Now change the buttons so they suit your preferences. This guide might be of help: SDL_Keycode.
My changes to the input.cpp file looks like this:
mappings[SDLK_LEFT] = LEFTKEY; mappings[SDLK_RIGHT] = RIGHTKEY; mappings[SDLK_UP] = UPKEY; mappings[SDLK_DOWN] = DOWNKEY; mappings[SDLK_KP_MINUS] = JUMPKEY; mappings[SDLK_0] = FIREKEY; mappings[SDLK_9] = PREVWPNKEY; mappings[SDLK_8] = NEXTWPNKEY; mappings[SDLK_BACKSPACE] = INVENTORYKEY; mappings[SDLK_EQUALS] = MAPSYSTEMKEY; mappings[SDLK_ESCAPE] = ESCKEY; mappings[SDLK_q] = F1KEY; mappings[SDLK_w] = F2KEY; mappings[SDLK_e] = F3KEY; mappings[SDLK_r] = F4KEY; mappings[SDLK_t] = F5KEY; mappings[SDLK_y] = F6KEY; mappings[SDLK_u] = F7KEY; mappings[SDLK_i] = F8KEY; mappings[SDLK_o] = F9KEY; mappings[SDLK_p] = F10KEY; mappings[SDLK_a] = F11KEY; mappings[SDLK_s] = F12KEY; mappings[SDLK_SPACE] = FREEZE_FRAME_KEY; mappings[SDLK_c] = FRAME_ADVANCE_KEY; mappings[SDLK_v] = DEBUG_FLY_KEY;
Now that we have changed and saved our files we write this into the terminal:
make
This will take a while, so go and make a good cup of tea, coffee or whatever you want :)
Now comes the fun part :D
Type this into the terminal:
./nx
The first time you run nx/NXEngine it will need to extract some game data from the Cave Story files we put into our nx folder, but when it is finished we can do what we set out to do: Play Cave Story!
Yay!
BONUS!
When you have finished this guide you unfortunately have to go into the folder ( cd ./nx) and then run the file (). For me personally this is to many keystrokes. So lets write a bash script
Open your favourite text editor on the CHIP and write this:
#!/bin/bash #!/bin/bash cd #Going to home folder (not needed if you save it in the home folder) cd ./nx #Opening nx folder ./nx #Starting Cave Story
Then save the file as cavestory.sh (or whatever you want).
Open the terminal, if it is not open and go to the folder where you saved the bash script (cd)
We now have to give all user permissions to execute the bash script:
chmod a+x cavestory.sh
That was it, you can now just type ./cavestory.sh in the terminal when you want to play cavestory. Or use your script to make a home screen icon to launch Cave Story :)

no. 9 - may the best cabin win masterlist
the wind slows in the area, the trees blocking the majority of it. as they sway through the sky, you can spot the archery course up ahead. it's bigger than when you went there as a teenager. a few bullseyes in a row with some old bows that weren't meant for shooting anymore. even the arrows' feathers were slowly loosing its barbs.
now, though, it's a beautiful sight. a few bullseyes hidden within the trees and varying in distance. the bows are crafted in such a way that they may never fray, the arrows all protected in a few sleeves. you take in a deep breath of fresh air and turn around to your group, "so the boys should be joining us again soon.. but maybe we could give it one go before they come."
you give them a playful wink, ready to help any of them out with starting. a few already knew from their previous years at camp, some from personal experiences. however, it gave you a chance to help some of them gain some love for the sport. moving their elbows some, pointing the bow in the right direction. truthfully you feel like you've found your calling.
and you're not the only one who can see it. atsumu and his cabin stands off in the woods, about to join you and your group. he watches from afar, for only a moment. the sun shines through the trees and fall on you, framing you like some sort of angel in front of him. atsumu smiles to himself before walking down towards the archery range, hands resting in his pockets.
"the best cabin is here! ready to defeat you cabin firekey! which by the way, the name sucks," atsumu stands with his posse of children behind him, saying the last sentence a little quieter.
"once again, didn't choose it! and no, my cabin is phenomenal at archery. in fact, i am 100% confident in the abilities of my girls," you rest your hands on your hips, standing up so you can be near his level.
he narrows his eyes, standing close to you, perhaps too close to you. he mirrors you, hands on his hips as well. your eyebrows furrow negatively, ready for the challenge that has presented itself in front of both of you, “alright, outer ring is five points, next is ten, and bullseye is fifteen. if you think you have what it takes.”
“oh i’m positive, may the best cabin win,” you hold out your hand, grasping his in a firm shake.
it doesn’t take long for the cabins to get into it, quickly scoring a wide arrange of scores. some of the less experienced campers miss the targets, still earning hopeful cheers from you. promising them all a treat no matter the outcome. you take glances at atsumu as you watch him counting up his cabin’s scores.
he stands confidently, back straight, hat on his head flicked slightly upwards. you swallow whatever nervousness you had and return to your girls, cheering them on with all the strength you had from the long day. it doesn’t take long for you to get through each camper, all of them getting three tries, their best score counting.
you turn to look at him, holding your small notepad up, ready to read him the defining score, “we had 110 points.”
“we had 110 points…” atsumu narrows his eyes at you, turning back to his team, wondering what you do in a scenario like this, “well that puts us in a predicament.”
“why don’t you two give it a go?” one of his campers suggests, leaning around atsumu so the two of you can see him.
you look back at atsumu, narrowing your eyes. of course part of you wants to try it, to get back at him some, even if it’s all a mystery to him. “sure, when we went camping here, i was fantastic at archery, so let’s give it a go,” you turn towards the bow and arrows, ready to triumph once more.
atsumu nods, agreeing despite remembering you beating him every time. for years he had tried to practice and hopefully surpass your score. and for years, he had fallen short of your standards. especially because every year, he had to look right at you when he shot the arrows. his body facing yours, he can’t help but look over at you occasionally, noting your actions and movements.
he purses his lips, watching your elbow raise and fingers grasp at the string. the way you move is elegant, swift, and smooth, moving like you’re one with the wind. releasing it, atsumu watches as the arrow hits the middle of the bullseye. he lets out a sigh, knowing you’re just as good as you ever were.
atsumu takes in a deep breath and draws back his bow, staring down the arrow and looking straight at the bullseye. he lets out the breath, heart rate rising as his fingers release, watching as the arrow barrels down the line. it hits towards the outside of the bullseye, matching your own score.
he turns around to look at you, finding himself pleased with his score. however, instead of indulging his excitement, he sees you high-fiving your campers, congratulating them on the tie. atsumu didn’t know what to expect, especially if you didn’t remember who he was, how poor he initially was.
a/n: hopefully this is okay!! i felt a little uneasy about it taglist (open): @lemurzsquad, @froyaoya, @localgaytrainwreck, @guitarstringed-scars, @girlkissersco

no. 5 - cabin firekey masterlist
“welcome to cabin firekey.. terrible name, i know! i wasn’t the one to chose it though,” you open the doors to your cabin, turning around to look at all of the kids joining you for the duration of camp.
they all look different from each other, all intrigued by different things. a few of them hold their phones, eyes lit up with the bright blue lights. a couple of them holding their bags while dancing on the balls of their feet. you could picture yourself in them, each of them, even the one who seemingly wants nothing to do with camp.
“as you all know, my name is y/n, and i’m your counselor. we’ll be competing in activities, hosting a talent show, and having some fun in between. i know that this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but i’m hoping we can enjoy ourselves,” you take in a deep breath, clasping your hands together, “so pick your bunk and we’ll get to know each other.”
as they filter into the cabin, you look back into the woods and spot atsumu with his group. he’s already engaging them all in a discussion, expressing himself with his hands and movements. you bite your lip, wondering if this counselor thing was going to be as easy as he’s making it appear from afar.
you turn back to your cabin, looking around to see that most of the kids had already set their things down. the couple of them that seemed excited had quickly laid out their things, styled it some, their attention on their fellow cabin mates.
“so, i’ve already seen the names of everyone joining, but how about you give some names to the faces and a fun fact about yourself?” your heart rate quickens as you see all of them looking over at you.
the looks on their faces practically scream that they’re all socially nervous, hoping for someone else to start the conversation, “uh, we can start with me.. i used to come to this camp when i was your age. i actually met a lot of my good friends here. mmh i also really like to play video games, so if this stuff isn’t your cup of tea, i’m always good to talk about that.”
being welcoming was the only way you could think to get them involved. to bring about a side of them that they wouldn’t normally show to others, which is why you loved this camp. slowly, the girls all started to get out of their shells some. like amaya who joined the camp so her parents would buy her a new computer part. or kaida who wants to work in wilderness conservation, paired with her twin kaori who loves theater.
it slowly brought smiles to most of their faces, a few still stubborn.. and honestly, you couldn’t help but feel overjoyed that even if it’s your first day, it’s a better week than you could imagine. at least, it has been going well, now all you need for the perfect day is a great dinner.
“okay, tonight, the only thing on our agenda is dinner. they’ll have a few options for dietary needs, so please let the servers know if you need anything specifically,” you grab your phone and stuff it into your pocket, standing by the door, “and you can sit wherever. if you know someone from another group, feel free to say hi.”
“could we sit with you?” hanae, one of the shyer girls, raises her hand slightly, pursing her lips.
you nod immediately, “for sure, i’ll probably see some of my friends, but yeah, plus you guys can help think of some filler activities between the main stuff.”
this seemed to make some of the kids a bit more confident, walking down the path together with a pip in their step. you subconsciously look towards where atsumu’s cabin is again, him and his group already gone from their area. almost instantly, you look back forward, scolding yourself for even wondering what he would be up to. you don’t care, you probably shouldn’t care.
especially when he likely doesn’t even take a peek in your direction, unknowingly setting off a chain reaction of emotions within you-
“y/n!” a voice comes from your right, the noise of someone running up to you forcing your head to look at the person.
all you can see is a tuff of blonde hair as someone wraps their arms around you. however, the feeling of the short-stature automatically makes you know that it’s the nishinoya. “noya! i would’ve assumed you would already be at the mess hall.”
“nah the dudes ended up wanting to catch some bugs so we lost track of time- but can you believe atsumu is here? the balls on that dude,” he shakes his head, completely ignoring the many younger kids surrounding the two of you.
you laugh some, shaking your head, “i can’t stop him from being a camp counselor here, and neither can you. besides he doesn’t even remember me! so trust me when i say that it’s not balls.”
nishinoya bumps into you some, his two left feet unable to walk straight on the narrow dirt path. every little thing starts to help you remember things from camp that you never would’ve thought of. the two of you trekking through the trees, him constantly bumping into you cause he leans when he walks. his voice loud and quick, always making the conversation feel shorter than it is.
“okay.. but i could fuck him up if need be!”
“dude don’t you have like ten year olds in your group? and no, don’t even think about it. i will get my revenge when and if the time is right, young noya,” you bow a little, acting as if he’s your padawan.
he shrugs his shoulders, eyes clearly now focused on the mess hall. his mind switching between the conversation at hand and the mouth-watering food that the both of you could remember osamu making. you smile to yourself, trying to listen as he discusses some talent show thing his group wants to do.
taglist (open): @lemurzsquad, @froyaoya, @localgaytrainwreck a/n: noya’s here!! i love writing him and hope you guys like it too
